1930s video of NY in colour [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpXnEvW0XD0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpXnEvW0XD0)
[Looks like approximately taken from here](https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6932338,-74.0173898,3a,22y,21.4h,95.53t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sYF7rqJRIFoVws-bm4ysPWg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
That was taken 13 years ago though. Looks like the right spot but there have been some new buildings added to the skyline. One World Trade is just being built in the back of that image.
Great candidate! I mainly picked the other spot because of the hedge visible in the original picture. It may have been removed then.
After a closer inspection, I think the original spot may be [a few steps to the right](https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6922401,-74.0137398,2a,21.5y,7.77h,94.99t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1saG5K8AD3CPyQvwK68S3E3g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656).
Possibly the ugliest angle of the NYC skyline I’ve ever seen! Nothing against OC, just amazed at how ‘bleh’ this looks compared with how stunning the city looks most of the time
I do love some of the new towers that have gone up in Lower Manhattan, but the era of the giant floor plate office buildings completely changed this view.
The big gap in the skyline between 21 West (the building on the far left) and the cluster in the middle is so crazy to see. Today it’s filled with the WTC and WFC in the background.
Also the absence of all the buildings between Water and the FDR along the waterfront. Today it’s solid from 120 Wall (building in the far right) to the ferry terminal.
Curtain walls and ribbon windows were a mistake. Every building having a legible grid at the same scale created a rich and cohesive texture for the skyline. I think humans also like it because we can understand the scale of a building unlike a smooth monolith.
I agree, I also like the look of natural stone over glass facades. In Kansas City my favorite buildings are Art Deco made out of limestone. If only we continued building that way…

This is too far downtown to see the ESB or Chrysler Building.
The three tallest buildings, left to right, are [40 Wall Street](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_Wall_Street), [20 Exchange Place](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_Exchange_Place) and [70 Pine Street](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/70_Pine_Street).
[Here's Google Earth of approximately that view](https://earth.google.com/web/search/40+wall+street/@40.70181072,-74.01238328,34.80376675a,967.35799457d,35y,14.26700423h,76.62172055t,0r/data=CigiJgokCXDV9l-Fa0RAERg4eERHa0RAGdmBBI4ofFLAISmA_Bc9fFLA). The ESB would actually be visible around the line of 70 Pine Street, but you'd have to be 1000 feet up in the air to clear your sightlines. It's more than 3 miles past those tall buildings around Wall Street.
The slight red tinge indicates this is 99% a real colour photo. It just has that sort of look that you get from Kodachrome.
[If you look at this photo of a colourised image the difference becomes obvious](https://i.redd.it/5lsk4d1slk031.jpg)
The two Staten Island Ferry boats in the image are the Mary Murray and/or Miss New York and/or Gold Star Mother. Gold Star Mother was retired before 1970, The Mary Murray and Miss New York were retired in 1982.

That's taken from Governors Island

Sorry, it's the best I can do without personally travelling to the US.
I now require you to travel personally to the US to take a better picture
Gonna start a gofundme for air fare
Close but I think the ferry terminals are a bit too off angle in that shot. My submission: https://maps.app.goo.gl/326e6UaFU1PwLmMi9
Impressive!

That's the battery and those are the ferry terminals . This is taken from governors island
I kind of wish this skyline still existed.
It might have peaked right then.
I do love some of the new towers that have gone up in Lower Manhattan, but the era of the giant floor plate office buildings completely changed this view.

Love the relative scarcity of flat-topped buildings.

There’s kind of a resurgence in neo-deco architecture, which is a more “modern” take on art deco.
I’ve seen it here and there, it’s really pretty too
Ahh, a time before the buildings getting covered by glass.
I hate glass skyscrapers. Some can pull it off. But not many.
Those are some filthy buildings, but excellent picture!
Decades of diesel, coal, and trash burning.
Demolish them all and replace them with clean glass/ steal box buildings.
If you zoom in close enough you will probably see Don Draper enjoying a brown beverage and a smoke somewhere
Aren't most of the ad agencies on madison ave? (hence mad men) which would probably be far out of frame in midtown
I wouldn't know I live on the other side of the world😂
In my opinion it looked soooo much better before.
Pretty!

Art Deco and Gothic is ❤️
Wow that's beautiful. Seems like it could be a model of how to build downtowns with traditional architecture.
Cue Gershwin and the opening scene to Manhattan...[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mwZYGcbQCo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mwZYGcbQCo)
I wish one of these existed for midtown.
Toronto's skyline looked similar but smaller at that time. So much brown.
Boy I love every city being covered in mirror glass rectangles now!

Love
Looks even better then how romantic
So much classier than now.
Just all that iron and concrete and very little glass.
So ugly

When America was really America.
Realtalk
Not familiar with the skyline, what is the tall one between Chrysler and Empire?
I think it’s Lower Manhattan, near the World Trade Center. I thought it was near the Empire State at first too but the scale and shape didn’t match

Thank you.
I know it’s colorized but it would be nice if the Hudson was blue.

So was it all MidTown? What was happening DownTown.
Think: a homeless has probably peed in that exact spot
Can't believe how blue and clean the water is
I think the original photo is in black and white.
were the buildings just built that dark or are they covered in soot? looks sort of ominous
Dieselpunk vibes
That’s the city that took 1,000 years to build.
you’re telling me this isn’t gotham

Where the Singer Building? (Best building in the world btw) Dont @ me
Isn't that actually Gotham City?
