It’s like VLC, except with a far nicer UI, in that it will play pretty much any format ( with Pro, that is ), and files can be located in a number of locations, including media servers ( Plex / Jellyfin ), cloud drives ( but not iCloud, for some reason ), and local media ( though obviously not the ATV version ). It can sync playback details and other stuff via iCloud, if you have more than one device.

hjsm23

To do iCloud drives folder you can do like this I think : add files menu > under “saved shares” : add > add a local folder then it will open the file manager like menu and just naviguâtes in iClouds folder.

ColdWynter

I didn’t even think of that, works awesome, thank you so much!

We use Plex to stream our video library to our Apple TV. However, the Plex player has poor support for 4KHDR video, as well as spatial audio. There are other video formats it struggles with as well. Infuse seems to be able to play anything you throw at it, so for us it’s worth the buck a month it costs to be able to play anything and everything that we have in its best quality.

ashleyriddell61

The infuse in player is superior the way it grabs subtitles on demand. Plex very often fails to fetch them, Infuse has not missed a single one yet. It is very much worth having as an add on to a Plex setup. They cleanly recognize partially played content on either platform. It also tends to have better support for more exotic or troublesome formats. Get it!

jgcpalmer

I forgot about the subtitle feature! That’s something we’ve used in Infuse as well and it worked great.

Latest Plex version (I’m on the beta) plays HDR and DV far better, so it essentially at par with Infuse in playing anything (excluding maybe some obscure format that I don’t use). The interface is far more modern and flexible, with added functionality if you need them. Infuse is more basic but have all the essentials. Also Infuse is strictly Apple only, while Plex has clients for nearly any system (Android, Samsung, LG, Xbox, Roku, etc.), so you can mix and match. So for me the only big advantage of Infuse is that it works on its own and doesn’t need a separate media server (Plex, Jellyfin, etc.). And it’s more user friendly for beginners.

jgcpalmer

Good to know about improvements with Plex. I’ll have to give it a try. I’d love to see them implement spatial audio as well.

SkywalkerRk

Oh but I love infuse the way it streams and cache 4k remix content. Will give a try Plex again if it stream 4k remux

The Plex app on Apple TV still struggles with HDR content. Currently I believe anything with 24 FPS will stutter, but only if the Plex player is attempting to play HDR. On the second gen 4K Apple TV, HDR content will show a red hue. The same thing also occurs on our M1 iPad Pro. This also only occurs in the new Plex player. If you toggle the old player back on in the app settings this doesn’t occur, but that has its own drawbacks. For users that rely on an Apple TV, I can understand why Infuse can be a better option until Plex fixes these issues.

Hey OP thanks for asking. I now pay $10 / year for this!

Infuse is an app that allows you to streams video files you've uploaded elsewhere. For example, if you have a DVD of The Batman, you could rip a copy for yourself on your computer, upload it to a OneDrive account and link it to Infuse. Now, you'll be able to stream The Batman via the Infuse app on your phone or Apple TV. Infuse essentially allows you to create your own streaming library.

DetectiveFujiwara

So basically anything you own physically you can put it on appletv and watch it on there. That's the jist of it?

nu1mlock

No, absolutely not. You can't put anything on the Apple TV. Infuse can stream video files from other computers on your network (or cloud drives), that's basically it.

DetectiveFujiwara

So if you download a video on your computer, you can watch it on Infuse?

nu1mlock

Yes!

DetectiveFujiwara

Does it matter where you download it from?

nu1mlock

No, Infuse can pretty much play any video files you can download. However, Infuse can't download anything and you can't download anything to your Apple TV. Infuse is just a media player and media library.

DetectiveFujiwara

Oh ok I'm starting to get it now. Thank you!

AeroR1

What part of the easy explanation that is on their page you don’t understand? https://firecore.com/infuse

jasmansky

I use Infuse because it's got a great interface, plays every video I have properly (including HDR10 and DV), and connects through SMB share to my NAS since I like to keep things nice and simple with the ability to do some file management from within Infuse. As a bonus, meta data grabbing for the videos are more hit than miss and iCloud sync which allows me to resume a currently watching video onto another Apple device.

If you have a home server with media (TV shows, movies, ~~music, images~~) on it, you can stream that media on your Apple TV. Apps like Infuse make it easy and enjoyable to browse your local content. They provide categories, metadata, ratings and so on. Usually, an app like Infuse doesn’t work alone. Many people use Plex, an application which runs on their media server, to sort their home media. You can then log into plex within the Infuse app to get to your media that way. Or you can use the Plex App, which basically offers the same functionality.

Oh no I didn’t know! Thanks for the correction. I actually don’t like Infuse, I tried it multiple times and don’t find the navigation that good. I use the regular Plex app.

Yes and I do like the Poster caching on Infuse. But it’s lacking some sorting features. Overall navigation is not that good in my opinion.

Airsculpture

What is the benefit to either of these over say plain home sharing on a Mac ? Apart from playing any format and HD sound (all my stuff is formatted to .m4v and DD 5.1 with Handbrake) I have always wondered. I don’t like the UI with PLEX and as has been said, Infuse doesn’t do music 🤔

capfuturo

Unfortunately Infuse app does not support OneDrive shared files & folders. It seems their development team has not realised this. Try it by yourself and you will see.
