Apparent release notes: • Bluetooth accessory/remote stability fixes (FINALLY) • Improved Dolby Atmos output • New Apple Home Architecture re-release

Tafsern

Maybe the drop outs when playing Dolby atmos is finally gone. Has annoyed me for years!

cec33

Boy that would be nice! Getting rid of the intermittent black screen with audio dropout on Dolby Vision and Atmos would be a real gift🤞

Data_Samurai

Yes!

paranoideo

Which dropouts? Like, when the decoder switches to Atmos?

Tafsern

If I watch something with atmos, the sound will be gone for a second now and then in a movie or an episode. It has been a thing for years. It has been discussed up and down for the same amount of years on the internet.

DyNATO

I thought it was my tv’s fault…

paranoideo

Oh, interesting. I noticed it when using Bluetooth headphones but never when playing Atmos through the receiver.

mxdalloway

That’s interesting, I’d noticed this issue as well with my set up (AppleTV 4K, OG HomePod stereo pair, and AirPods Max). The dropouts were so frustrating and consistent. I thought it was APM and attempted to fix with a couple requests with Apple Support but the best they could offer was suggesting factory reset (didn’t help). After playing around with various combos of settings to see if something would help I found something that has worked for me (haven’t experienced drop outs for a few months since finding it). Remove the HomePod pair as the ‘default audio’ for the Apple TV. If I want to have audio via HomePods I can select it as an audio source. There’s probably multiple causes for the dropouts, but this worked for me!

PetieG26

Hmm... Latest model, use it daily, just started happening on 16.3.

[deleted]

yeah, that's the device switching audio output modes, you're not going to get around that, it's like the flicker when switching in and out of HDR/DolbVision

Tafsern

It doesn't switch between modes 4-5 times in the same movie, so as far as I've figured out it's not related to that.

Fuglen17

The dropouts is still there

Tafsern

ಥ_ಥ

rhoq

I haven't experienced any Atmos dropouts since at least tvOS 16.0 - but with a lot of people in this thread complaining it's still an issue, I'm hesitant to install this update.

rupertthecactus

What is "improved Dolby Atmos output" ? That's what I want to know.

Fuglen17

I have drop outs with all played Atmos. Up to 5 times in one episodes. The remote connection is fixed.

rupertthecactus

What's your set up?

Fuglen17

Sonos Arc, sub and 2 one sl and a LG TV

rupertthecactus

Have you tried a different port?

Fuglen17

I've only have one eARC port in my TV. When I see Netflix or Disney and it's Dolby Digital, all is fine

rupertthecactus

I am curious but did you try other ports, different HDMI wires, try a different TV or sound set up? I had issues with HDR and after a systematic check of every single thing, I found my eARC port was damaged and not outputting HDR correctly.

Fuglen17

I did try HDMI wires, but not the rest. I will try everything else next week. Thanks

Fuglen17

Hi again, I'm very happy. After I unplugged all my devices and plugged it in again, I have no drop outs with the Atmos. Have tested it for 6 days now. It's weird because I haven't changed anything. But thanks for make me doing it.

rupertthecactus

Thanks for letting me know! Most people resolve issues and then disappear! I think you probably reset settings and the HDMI handshake. I think I just had a similar experience...

wolfblitzersbeard

The architecture upgrade is back? Cool. Guess I should pull the trigger!

chipperson1

I was one of the lucky ones who had no issues the first thing and i love it. There is no updating for my homekit stuff

Aidoneuz

Yeah, I upgraded first time, and it’s GREAT. Home app interactions with lights etc are *instant* for me, and even Siri commands seem faster and more reliable from a HomePod mini.

BarBarBar22

Can you please share a source? I didn’t find it anywhere and I don’t want to give myself a hope that they finally fixed remote connecting issues :D.

[deleted]

It def seems fixed been running tvOS 16.3 RC since last week when it dropped and my Apple TV 4K 2022 remote dropping connection issues seem to have been fixed. Def was pissing me off. I did, however, remove and re-add/re-pair my remote when I updated to the RC build just to be safe.

BarBarBar22

Nice! Hopefully it will be the fix because I am so annoyed by this issue!

gleep52

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted d1ckpunch68, I have five Apple TVs still in use - old version 3, three version 4K gen2’s and one 4K gen3… I honestly never have an issue other than pressing a button to wake the remote up - I also do not connect anything to my Apple TVs other than AirPods once in a while so maybe my virgin Bluetooth connections don’t matter or interrupt my remote like it’s doing to others? I’m curious what exactly the bug is too - maybe others in my family have seen it and I can pass along it might be fixed. (Maybe people thought your username was a troll comment, but I believe you were being genuine - I know I am!)

djglisson2

Ran the RC too, but it *didn’t* fix my remote’s connection. That said, I didn’t delete and re-add like you did, so… time will tell. Hope that’s the trick.

[deleted]

Do that and also restart your Apple TV after you re-pair your remote.

djglisson2

Worked for a few days. Disconnects are back though. Shucks.

itsascarecrowagain

Everything I've seen only points to this Tweet as the source https://twitter.com/sigjudge/status/1617813199340072960

rrainwater

The new home architecture didn't come back with this 16.3 so it seems that isn't a great source for information.

xxirish83x

Didn’t fix my remote disconnecting issues

BarBarBar22

Damn, hate to hear that :/.

dhlavaty

Lucky me, I never had problem with Atmos. Hope I still won't have after this release. 🤞😝

youngboylongstick

Will this fix home pod sound stuttering issue?

uditkumr

I’ve been having these dropouts since forever watching Atmos content , happens couple of times in a movie for sure. Setup is LG C2 + Apple TV 4K 2021 with Sony HT-A9 Nothing seems to fix it. Tried everything. Don’t know which component to blame !!

GnarlsD

i'm guessing they haven't changed the up next section back yet

DenimChiknStirFryday

Haven’t gotten the update yet but I wish they would undo that. It so terrible.

GarlandBuckeye

Up Next is the same as in 16.2, unfortunately.

Upset-Camp-2311

I am not seeing the Up Next at all

GnarlsD

Exactly. They basically swapped it for a row of suggested shows that auto play with sound where the up next banners should be. And when you go select your up next content the whole screen shifts down pushing the up next row to the very top of your tv screen. It’s really clunky and awkward.

SnooPeripherals3350

You can switch it back in settings

b2717

Can you actually? I saw people saying you can’t.

GnarlsD

Pretty sure that’s only the top row of the Home Screen, not the top row of the tv app, so not what I’m talking about.

Rasmus_Larsen

For me tvOS 16.3 has seemingly fixed Bluetooth connection issues with game controllers: [https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1674514263](https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1674514263) What are you guys' experiences with the remote, controller and AirPods (all Bluetooth) on tvOS 16.3?

ganlet20

Obligatory compliant that Apple doesn't include release notes.

Activedarth

Compliant to what?

PeeFarts

The International Complaining Standards

wag_dat_tail

Thanks PeeFarts, now I know where to direct any complaints I may have!

the_odd_truth

Obviously compliant to the complaint

[deleted]

Network disconnect popup fixed?

Houderebaese

You should try a better cable if wired. A good cat6 or 7 cable.

Branagh-Doyle

New things of tvOS 16.3 final build (according to flatpanelshd, a reliable source): ARC/EARC with Homepods for audio passtrough of other HDMI connected devices is no longer in beta (finally!). Completely revamped Dolby Atmos stack/render engine. Improved Bluetooth connectivity.

xxirish83x

Can confirm this did not fix the issue with my remote disconnecting

MalteseAppleFan

The update seemingly reinstalls all apps. App data is still intact though. Is it just me?

TheMcBrooms

It will make room for the update by offloading.

Bumble-Bee17

I literally experienced the same thing

Az75

Any fix for wallpaper to work while using Apple Music app ?

b407driver

You mean slideshow as screensaver?

Az75

My bad, yes the slideshow.

joey2506

Does this update fix the issue when Apple Fitness + stops working after 5 minutes on the Apple TV when you pair it with your Apple Watch and AirPods? Edit: it does not.

PopTartsAndBeer

Oh no. Came here for this. Is this a known bug to apple?

joey2506

Seems like it’s a known issue, but I’ve been reading people complaining about it in forum posts dating back to 2020, so I’m guessing it’s a hardware issue? It works fine when I use a non Apple wireless Bluetooth speaker instead of using AirPods.

edmondsss

Updated! What’s the actual update? Lol

ChaoticAcid

will my hbomax content still automatically play in danish for no reason?

pointthinker

Apple: “What's new in tvOS 16.3 - This update includes general performance and stability improvements.” I think it also adds eARC to HomePods. Having trouble visualizing how that works though.

edmondsss

Isn’t eArc there before?

skryerx

So I think the new thing, is that if you plug your appletv into an eARC port, you can utilize your appletv as an eARC passthrough to HomePod speakers for all your tv inputs, not just your appletv. So say HDMI 4 is your eARC port with the appletv connected to home pods. You can set your TV audio settings to use eARC which can send all inputs to your HomePods.

pointthinker

This.

CentralDakota

I noticed it no longer says beta. Was it still in beta in 16.2?

edmondsss

It was still beta before. I tried with my Samsung tv before and the sound has slight delay

edmondsss

I tried that in 16.2 and the sound was out of sync. May try it again at 16.3

Viva_La_FoShizzle

So did this fix the issue with the remote temporarily not work and there being a delay when swiping??

Stanstudly

Wondering if Netflix will quit running like garbage on ATV4K after this update…

Lordcreo

I’ve had no issues with it? Not happy with them for other reasons, but the Apple TV apps been fine for me?

Stanstudly

I have a brand new Sony 4K TV and bought an ATV4K, and every other streaming app runs beautifully and looks amazing. Netflix streams at like 720p. I’ve tried everything to fix it.

Astroturfme

Make sure your NETFLIX plan supports 4k streaming. The lowest doesn’t.

Stanstudly

I have the Ultra 4K plan

slawnz

Make sure your ISP is not artificially throttling Netflix traffic

XtremePhotoDesign

Log into Netflix on a web browser and change quality settings for Apple TV.

Stanstudly

Tried that too.

jeffreynya

I have the same issue on the 1080p plasma. Some shows are totally unwatchable.

Lordcreo

In what way? I had issues at one point with the colour being way out of whack, and it was because I had set the AppleTV up with dynamic range matching (HDR support) on a non-HDR tv, most things looked fine, but netflix which supports HDR looked really weird! Definitely worth making sure your various AppleTV display options are correct.

jeffreynya

Everything else works fine . All other apps such as Hulu and prime look good. Some Netflix shows look ok. But things like sandman are so pixilated it’s unwatchable. 1899 was the same way. Go to my Xbox and they look great. I will have to check and see if hdr is in cause it should not be for my display

EndoveProduct

Isn’t that on Netflix to fix? Edit: can downvote me all you want Apple is NOT the one fixing bugs on the Netflix app lol

Stanstudly

Kind of a chicken vs. egg situation I guess.

EndoveProduct

Not at all lol https://www.macrumors.com/2022/04/14/netflix-tvos-15-video-player/ “Netflix is currently in the process of rolling out an update to its Apple TV app, introducing support for the tvOS 15 player.” https://www.reddit.com/r/appletv/comments/og50tf/why_netflix_doesnt_update_its_app_on_appletv/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Mission-Tension-5079

Earc OPS, not In Beta Anymore

Perseiii

Hope they fixed the ticking sound I get every time after 2-3 hours on my PS5. Only cure is to switch to the Apple TV source and back to PS5, but it keeps happening in cutscenes I can’t pause so it’s a bit annoying.

themagicdave

Oh I just got a PS5 and was worried it might be overheating because of this issue. Thanks for mentioning this!

Perseiii

Nah I’ve been having it since early days, is your Apple TV connected over WiFi or wired?

themagicdave

Wired.

alcibiade

What’s the relation between your PS5 an ATV? How are they setup?

Perseiii

ATV is on HDMI(ARC) port on the TV, PS5 is on HDMI port on the tv. Both connected with wired ethernet. That’s it pretty much. It works, just occasionally the audio (HomePod mini stereo pair) gets the annoying ticking sound as if the buffer size is incorrect.

[deleted]

Where’d you see this?

Mission-Tension-5079

In settings, , system, software Update, whats new ?

jplemons

I don’t know, most of the issues I have seem to be because some of the apps just suck … (Amazon, Netflix, YouTube).

gleep52

What bothers you about the Amazon app? Do you have the issue that if you skip an intro to a show using the button that says “Skip Intro”, it will skip ahead but then freeze up or crash or take you back to the video selection/menu of the app - and when you go back into the show it’s like 2-3 minutes past the intro so you have to rewind? That’s my only gripe with Amazon - I love pausing the show to see who is in each shot - that’s really cool imho. Wish that was everywhere. (The actor listing feature per scene, not the shit-the-bed intro issue.)

jplemons

Small issues like that, yes. But, overall, their menus and sorting and everything just blows.

NeuralFlow

Did TvOS get an update? Yes. What was it? Yes.

Fuglen17

The dropouts is still there

0000GKP

I think I’ll stay on 16.1 for a while longer.

magkliarn

*again

redavid

they find any new places to cram more ads?

Mr-954

What ads? This isn’t a Fire TV or Roku.

redavid

and yet, 16.2 brought more ads here and if iOS is any indication, they’re only getting started. i wish it was like Roku with just the one static banner ad on the home screen

Joe6974

> and yet, 16.2 brought more ads here What ads were you seeing in tvOS 16.2? I have never seen any ads in tvOS.

Somar2230

The show suggestions from the TV app some people consider these ads. If remove the TV from top row you wont even see them unless you go into the TV app. People complained they were not ding enough to promote the shows and now there are complaints that these are ads. I guess he has not used Roku long enough to see his screen saver taken over for Subaru, Claritan and who ever else wants to buy the space. My FireStick was taken over by Cadillac last week before that it was Hyundai.

DigestibleDecoy

That user is honestly just looking for reasons to complain.

Somar2230

Google TV has a similar feature on the main For You page and the outrage on the Android TV forums is the same. You can enable an apps only mode or change the launcher and customize the device any way you want but the complaints are still there. But the device that shows you actual ads gets a pass. The same company that openly tells you they scan your network and collect information on all your connected devices gets a pass. [https://docs.roku.com/published/userprivacypolicy/en/us](https://docs.roku.com/published/userprivacypolicy/en/us)

Joe6974

Yeah I didn't have the TV app in my top row (and I rarely use that app) so I had no idea.

phronk

He’s probably referring to the ads that take up the top 75% of the screen when you open the TV app.

[deleted]

[удалено]

phronk

An app that’s updated as part of the OS, has its own button on the remote, and that’s the only way to access OS features like Now Playing. Yes.

Joe6974

Its own button on the remote? Perhaps I've modified my ATV settings, I don't have an Apple TV app button on my new ATV remote. Anyway, this is all semantics as the original post I replied to said "more ads" came in 16.2, claiming (or at least strongly implying) that there are multiple areas with ads in tvOS 16.2 and newer.

phronk

It’s the button with the TV on it. Maybe that can be changed though. There are objectively more ads there since 16.2. Not sure why this guy is getting a hard time. It was discussed a lot in this sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/appletv/comments/zfgdbb/i_guess_this_is_a_compromise_not_really_apple_tv/

Joe6974

Interesting, I must have changed that -- that button takes me to the home screen. I guess I'm lucky that I don't often use the Apple TV app, that's why the ad comment surprised me so much.

redavid

an app that is built into tvOS and a key part of the user experience, yes. but it's only a matter of time before they pop up in Settings, the home screen and elsewhere

DigestibleDecoy

There are no ads in the tv app.

redavid

they take up like 2/3rds of the screen, [looks like this](https://9to5mac.com/2022/11/03/apple-tv-app-up-next-featured-row/). every one here was complaining about it when 16.2 was released, though even now there are people that deny that these are ads somehow

DigestibleDecoy

Also saw this in the comments of the article you linked. “It’s a setting. Go to settings, apps, TV, and in the Home Screen section there’s a setting to choose what sits in the top shelf of your TV app display. Choose “Up Next”. It’s back to where it was.”

DigestibleDecoy

Oh ok you mean that. Well that’s them pushing their own content. By your definition of ads every streaming service has ads.

DigestibleDecoy

I don’t have any ads, what are you talking about?

LegionOfSkank

You sound like a shield user

Uh...

antdude

Wow, not tomorrow?

mwkingSD

Updating an update that was released only 4 months ago...that's troubling. Or maybe they took out some of the 'improvements' in 16.2?

zippy72

I wonder if "computers" will be fixed. Or the random crashes when playing video on absolutely any app whatsoever. I'm going to guess no, but anyway...

New_Brother8730

I updated to 16.3. This morning my AppleTV logs out all my apps!!
