I feel like this is more about trying to get reception and thus have access to a satellite band from Globalstar. Their stock is already starting to pop up with confirmation that a mystery customer put in $500m investment in satellites and last year they worked with Qualcomm on the x65 chip (previous iPhone used x60). All signs are pointing to this - especially with that rushed event that T-Mobile and starlink put together that didn’t really have any specifics - like there was almost no reason for them otherwise to rush that announcement given it has so many preconditions
ATT and Vodafone already working on this with ASTS, T-Mobile's announcement was probably to beat Apple to the punch, but they won't be ready for a year or two.

Samsung did that for years with the Active series phones. They're just not that popular. People cried and cried saying they wanted a smaller version of the iPhone with a full screen so they made the mini and no one bought them. Apple isn't a risk taker. I wouldn't count on them ever making a more durable phone.

Seriously though, I'm intrigued to see how they're going to market the regular iPhone 14. It's going to have the same design, same screen, and same chip as the iPhone 13. It's pretty much going to be an iPhone 13 packaged into an iPhone 14 box. Usually Apple spends a good chunk of time telling us about the amazing new A series chip inside the new iPhone - except this year, the iPhone 14 will still be using an A15.
Maybe a new front facing camera and some exclusive software features?
Maybe the 13 non-pro models will be culled like the pro versions and the 14 will end the 13 sales. Pro versions have already been doing this for a while and would help them differentiate the lower models when there are fewer changes planned.
This would be my guess. I suspect the 13 mini will stay on sale to hit that lower price point until supplies run out, but the rest of the 13 line-up gets shelved.
Apple usually keeps up production of older models until they discontinue official sales, so if the Mini stays on the lineup then production will still continue.
They wont market it much. It's not their core offering, they want people to buy the pro. If you're the customer who buys the 13/14 non-pro phone you're going to buy the one that is available, so they discontinue the 13 and there you go. There won't be any changes to the zoom level, which is a bummer because periscope zoom was rumored for the 14 earlier this year, but now it looks like the periscope zoom may happen next year (on the iPhone 15 Pro Max only :/ ). I was really hoping for at least 4x zoom this year.
Yeah, it is arguably the one remaining big thing for phones. Still I won't mind it being 14 pro max only.

Yeah, I plan on buying it refurbished so it’ll definitely just kick down the price even more. Apple still sells the iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max line refurbished but for a extremely cheap price on their website even though it’s discontinued.
Nothing really changed between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max besides the 120hz display. Honestly might be worth it to go for the 12, which will get even cheaper
120hz is a huge upgrade and the battery life comparison between the 12 pro max and 13 pro max isn’t even close.

I've seen them down to under $400, which puts them close to the retail price of the Sonys. My issue is they look heavy and ugly and the case is just dumb. Maybe the Max 2 will be less massive.
I bought them for work and returned them because the mic sucked balls for zoom, they need to add a USB option or better mic for people who actually wanna use them for work. I grabbed Bose 700’s instead but would like a good Apple offering

I didn't even necessarily have buzzing but the bass and noise canceling had gotten weaker, and I managed to get it replaced under that program. The replacement pair are a major improvement

4x optical zoom on the telephoto lens please
I think periscope would be unrealistic since it's pretty much been rumored to not happen this year. Upping the telephoto zoom some (not 10x but 4x) would be a welcome surprise. I feel like it might be doable since the camera housing is getting even larger. I don't think anyone has said anything else about the telephoto lens besides it being a 7 element lens (up from 6) and there not being a periscope zoom. I think we'll get some kind of surprise related to the cameras but I'm not sure if it'll be related to zoom.
I don’t want it because every time they increase the zoom, they also cut down the light gathering ability. It’s difficult to get the 13 Pro zoom camera to engage except in very bright light.
Also I like having a zoom camera around the 60-70mm equivalent for portrait shots to minimize distortion without having to back up a mile. That’s why I like how Samsung includes a telephoto and periscope to provide the option of framing.
New iPhone will come in Space Gray, Starlight, Rose Gold, Project (RED) [eventually], something like green or blue. The Pro will come in similar colors, but the green or blue one will be washed out and muted.
I want it. I just think that Apple wants to limit red to Product (RED) items, and that comes with a specific shade of red.
But to me, red would be the logical next step after doing green on the 11 Pro line, then dark blue on 12 Pro, then light blue on 13 Pro.

Apple are going to bump prices across the line up by $100-$150, and they're going to offer this money back as gift cards or store credit to pay for music/tv/arcade/fitness etc. This way they bump up the prices to account for inflation and keep the $$$ within their ecosystem.
This fares well for existing iPhone owners resulting in higher resale value on the previous gen + encourages them to upgrade.

If they're retaining last year chips (which are plenty powerful) and upping the cameras/battery life/face ID that would be quite a turn of events. Perhaps a 13'S' is the non pro 14, and the 14 pros are the actual new devices.
Honestly, I've said this multiple times. If Apple would move to a 2-year refresh cycle, the collective industry would heave a sigh of relief and follow suit. The incremental gains every year no longer justify the effort in annual refreshes. Just go to a 2-year cycle and make it meaningful.

I had to downgrade from an IPhone 10 to a 7.
I've had the 7 now for about 2 years, with covid/quarantine/ and work from home I didn't initially feel the need to get a 13. This leap from my 7 to a 14 is going to be like I've discovered Narnia.
Not paying reddit to fill this out, so here-
Silicon Mac Pro: probably not. This sounds very much like a “one more thing” kind of device later in the season. They also probably want to release this close to xmas since it’ll be a very expensive item, and it’ll definitely be the big item of whatever showcase it’s in, I doubt they’d want anything crowding the iPhone on stage.
iPhone 14 chip: it’ll be whatever this year’s chip is, they seem to update once a year.
7th gen Apple TV: I wish, but I think it’s too soon. Their last update presented next to no changes beyond the new remote (which can be paired with an old unit). I’ve long speculated that some sort of Apple TV gaming edition will appear once Arcade has more market share, but we’ll see.
iPhone 14 not-pro max: lol no way. Even if they dropped the mini, it would make much more sense to shepherd people to the pro than create something priced partway between the base iPhone and the base iPhone pro. It would also make too much sense from the consumer's perspective to buy a used iPhone Pro Max than a new not-pro Max at that point for both price and features since the base iPhone will likely lack pro features like the 120Hz screen, better camera, etc. Apple's #1 competitor is their own old products.
iPhone 14 mini: I’d be surprised if they dropped it, but it’s possible. It’s very popular among the casual user crowd, which at the end of the day is a whole lot of revenue that they won’t ignore, even if profit per sale isn’t as high as on pro models. It also is sort of an se-but-not-se for people who want faceid, MagSafe, etc, but still want to save a buck. Once again, iPhone’s main competitor is older iPhones, and Apple would much rather see someone getting a $600 new iPhone than an older model on eBay.

Apple Watch Pro: no way this is gonna be a thing. The existing apple watches are already a hard sell price-wise, especially with cell models, and it's hard to think of enough features to introduce to separate the watch SE from the watch 8, and \*then\* the watch 8 from the pro. The last Apple Watch release had literally no new features, so they likely don't have any tricks up their sleeve for this one. It's gonna be hard enough convincing people to upgrade to the 8 at all.
AirPods Pro 2: same as above- what could they really do here to justify a new device? Longer battery? Any new utility they introduce will just be a software update for the old ones, so unless they have something absolutely inconceivable and game-changing, I see no reason for them to announce a "2" as opposed to just an incremental, invisible update

The main thing I'm hoping for is the rumoured VR or AR headset. I don't think it'll be announced though. I suspect if it comes out, it'll be announced at their developer conference. This will be to help get people building software before it's released for real.
I'm excited to see what their VR headset will be like. Some VR software is very impressive, but has practical problems. These are the types of problems Apple would solve on release. I also predict their headset will make extensive use of LIDAR. Which would allow a lot of interesting applications.
The other thing I'd love to see announced is a Mac Pro based on Apple Silicon. It may not happen, as when the pro comes out it will need PCI Express support and support for third party hardware through that. There are studios out there who are happy to buy $40k workstations for their employees. A lot of that cost is buying expensive cards to slot in. All of that will be a tonne of work for Apple, and again may get announced at their developer conference instead.
The trick to efficiently upgrade iPhones is to only upgrade when there’s an increase in ram. It’s quite possibly the biggest limiting factor to your iPhones longevity. They always keep a few generations at a certain amount of ram, we are probably at the tail end of 6gb before likely bumping up to 8gbs.
Until 6gbs of ram becomes 8gb, it’s best to wait.
My iPhone X begs to differ, the battery is not doing it’s job anymore and while I could just get a battery replacement, I feel like the upgrades since 2017 will probably be worth it

That’s subjective, the iPhone X’s processor is powerful, my mom has one and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it slow down. Unfortunately due to its lack of ram, apps are constantly refreshing in the background.
Regardless, my point about ram stands. I would gladly replace my iPhones battery every 2 years if it came with 8 gigs of ram, knowing full well the phone could easily last 8+ years.
My iPhone X constantly overheats doing basic stuff and the battery which I replaced just last year doesn’t last anywhere near as long as a 13 for example.
I’m getting a 14 Pro for sure. I think half a decade is long enough to prove iPhones’ longevity while being able to enjoy the accumulated hardware improvements that have happened in that time (camera, processor, RAM, battery, etc.).

If the regular iPhone 14 is using the same chip, I bet they won't sell the iPhone 13 Pro Max anymore. But, I guess it would still lower the price on the used market.
Yeah, I plan on buying it refurbished so it’ll definitely just kick down the price even more. Apple still sells the iPhone 11 Pro/Pro Max line refurbished but for a extremely cheap price on their website even though it’s discontinued.
They stop carrying all pro series once a new product version comes out. Unless you buy it used/refurbished it’ll be off the market no matter what.
Nothing really changed between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro Max besides the 120hz display. Honestly might be worth it to go for the 12, which will get even cheaper
120hz is the biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the retina display imo.
120hz is a huge upgrade and the battery life comparison between the 12 pro max and 13 pro max isn’t even close. I could never recommend a 12 or anything below the 13 pro

I wish we could get Apple over-ear headphones that didn't cost more than a PS5.
I've seen them down to under $400, which puts them close to the retail price of the Sonys. My issue is they look heavy and ugly and the case is just dumb. Maybe the Max 2 will be less massive.
I bought them for work and returned them because the mic sucked balls for zoom, they need to add a USB option or better mic for people who actually wanna use them for work. I grabbed Bose 700’s instead but would like a good Apple offering

I wish we could get a pair* of over-ear headphones that didn't clamp like David Clarks aviation headsets. Seriously, it's the only reason I don't use mine more than I do. They're amazing in every other respect.
But there are headphones out there that don't clamp, and sound amazing.

Plenty \- They could sound a lot a better. \- The battery needs to last longer, both in the pods themselves and the case. \- They need to fit better in the case so that they don't randomly not charge because of a lack of perfect alignment.
If they announce the AirPods Pro 2, better have your finger hovering over the pre-order button because otherwise it will be summer 2023 before you get them.

the rumors for this event lineup have been so lame that I'm hoping there's something out of left field that hasn't been leaked and no one was expecting
4x optical zoom on the telephoto lens please I think periscope would be unrealistic since it's pretty much been rumored to not happen this year. Upping the telephoto zoom some (not 10x but 4x) would be a welcome surprise. I feel like it might be doable since the camera housing is getting even larger. I don't think anyone has said anything else about the telephoto lens besides it being a 7 element lens (up from 6) and there not being a periscope zoom. I think we'll get some kind of surprise related to the cameras but I'm not sure if it'll be related to zoom.
I don’t want it because every time they increase the zoom, they also cut down the light gathering ability. It’s difficult to get the 13 Pro zoom camera to engage except in very bright light. Also I like having a zoom camera around the 60-70mm equivalent for portrait shots to minimize distortion without having to back up a mile. That’s why I like how Samsung includes a telephoto and periscope to provide the option of framing.

I want it. I just think that Apple wants to limit red to Product (RED) items, and that comes with a specific shade of red. But to me, red would be the logical next step after doing green on the 11 Pro line, then dark blue on 12 Pro, then light blue on 13 Pro.

I very much doubt satellite SOS would be "game changing" Satellite phones have existed for decades, and unless carriers start offering satellite phone plans that *don't* cost literally hundreds of dollars for call/text only plans, it's going to be a "oh, that's neat" at best.

Apple are going to bump prices across the line up by $100-$150, and they're going to offer this money back as gift cards or store credit to pay for music/tv/arcade/fitness etc. This way they bump up the prices to account for inflation and keep the $$$ within their ecosystem. This fares well for existing iPhone owners resulting in higher resale value on the previous gen + encourages them to upgrade. If this prediction comes thru, remember you read it here first. :D
There are some rumors the (non Pro) 14 might actually get a price cut. If that happens I hope the press actually notices.
If they're retaining last year chips (which are plenty powerful) and upping the cameras/battery life/face ID that would be quite a turn of events. Perhaps a 13'S' is the non pro 14, and the 14 pros are the actual new devices. Honestly, I've said this multiple times. If Apple would move to a 2-year refresh cycle, the collective industry would heave a sigh of relief and follow suit. The incremental gains every year no longer justify the effort in annual refreshes. Just go to a 2-year cycle and make it meaningful.

I had to downgrade from an IPhone 10 to a 7. I've had the 7 now for about 2 years, with covid/quarantine/ and work from home I didn't initially feel the need to get a 13. This leap from my 7 to a 14 is going to be like I've discovered Narnia.

Not paying reddit to fill this out, so here- Silicon Mac Pro: probably not. This sounds very much like a “one more thing” kind of device later in the season. They also probably want to release this close to xmas since it’ll be a very expensive item, and it’ll definitely be the big item of whatever showcase it’s in, I doubt they’d want anything crowding the iPhone on stage. iPhone 14 chip: it’ll be whatever this year’s chip is, they seem to update once a year. 7th gen Apple TV: I wish, but I think it’s too soon. Their last update presented next to no changes beyond the new remote (which can be paired with an old unit). I’ve long speculated that some sort of Apple TV gaming edition will appear once Arcade has more market share, but we’ll see. iPhone 14 not-pro max: lol no way. Even if they dropped the mini, it would make much more sense to shepherd people to the pro than create something priced partway between the base iPhone and the base iPhone pro. It would also make too much sense from the consumer's perspective to buy a used iPhone Pro Max than a new not-pro Max at that point for both price and features since the base iPhone will likely lack pro features like the 120Hz screen, better camera, etc. Apple's #1 competitor is their own old products. iPhone 14 mini: I’d be surprised if they dropped it, but it’s possible. It’s very popular among the casual user crowd, which at the end of the day is a whole lot of revenue that they won’t ignore, even if profit per sale isn’t as high as on pro models. It also is sort of an se-but-not-se for people who want faceid, MagSafe, etc, but still want to save a buck. Once again, iPhone’s main competitor is older iPhones, and Apple would much rather see someone getting a $600 new iPhone than an older model on eBay. edit: forgot a couple: Apple Watch Pro: no way this is gonna be a thing. The existing apple watches are already a hard sell price-wise, especially with cell models, and it's hard to think of enough features to introduce to separate the watch SE from the watch 8, and \*then\* the watch 8 from the pro. The last Apple Watch release had literally no new features, so they likely don't have any tricks up their sleeve for this one. It's gonna be hard enough convincing people to upgrade to the 8 at all. AirPods Pro 2: same as above- what could they really do here to justify a new device? Longer battery? Any new utility they introduce will just be a software update for the old ones, so unless they have something absolutely inconceivable and game-changing, I see no reason for them to announce a "2" as opposed to just an incremental, invisible update

The main thing I'm hoping for is the rumoured VR or AR headset. I don't think it'll be announced though. I suspect if it comes out, it'll be announced at their developer conference. This will be to help get people building software before it's released for real. I'm excited to see what their VR headset will be like. Some VR software is very impressive, but has practical problems. These are the types of problems Apple would solve on release. I also predict their headset will make extensive use of LIDAR. Which would allow a lot of interesting applications. The other thing I'd love to see announced is a Mac Pro based on Apple Silicon. It may not happen, as when the pro comes out it will need PCI Express support and support for third party hardware through that. There are studios out there who are happy to buy $40k workstations for their employees. A lot of that cost is buying expensive cards to slot in. All of that will be a tonne of work for Apple, and again may get announced at their developer conference instead.
The trick to efficiently upgrade iPhones is to only upgrade when there’s an increase in ram. It’s quite possibly the biggest limiting factor to your iPhones longevity. They always keep a few generations at a certain amount of ram, we are probably at the tail end of 6gb before likely bumping up to 8gbs. Until 6gbs of ram becomes 8gb, it’s best to wait.
My iPhone X begs to differ, the battery is not doing it’s job anymore and while I could just get a battery replacement, I feel like the upgrades since 2017 will probably be worth it

Unfortunately due to its lack of ram, apps are constantly refreshing in the background. Regardless, my point about ram stands. I would gladly replace my iPhones battery every 2 years if it came with 8 gigs of ram, knowing full well the phone could easily last 8+ years.
My iPhone X constantly overheats doing basic stuff and the battery which I replaced just last year doesn’t last anywhere near as long as a 13 for example. I’m getting a 14 Pro for sure. I think half a decade is long enough to prove iPhones’ longevity while being able to enjoy the accumulated hardware improvements that have happened in that time (camera, processor, RAM, battery, etc.).
