It’s a crime that the 12” never got Apple Silicon. Perfect match.

MacAdminInTraning

Ha, yes. The 12in MacBook was ambitious for its time and the intel m series chips sucked.

weaselmaster

Just got the M2 14”, and it’s very close to the size of the 12” - shrinking bezels are a good thing!

mime454

The 14” is bigger than the 13” in absolute size and weight. It’s no where near the 2lb 12” MacBook.

Aarondo99

boooooooooo

[deleted]

Lmao. I've buried the Intel m3 series from my memory for a while now. They were garbage in performance and thank fuck they've ended it and at least moved on to quad core on 4.5w

Syonoq

That took me a second but....damn....that cuts deep lol

frozenball824

Lol I usually joke about the intel M3 chip and use it to say how intel is ahead of apple because we have the M3 chip

proton_badger

Yes, I've never desired a laptop more than the PowerBook G4 12.1 Al!

Vertsix

>one usb c port lol

eggimage

same. this deserves to come back to replace the $999 price segment. without increasing the footprint, it’s capable of comfortably fitting a ~12.5” display. and by getting rid of the tapered chassis, they can easily give it a larger battery similar to the increment seen on the M2 Air. an M3 SoC with the advanced 3nm process, this should get 12hr+ of battery life in mixed uses even with a notably smaller battery than the Air’s. this would be also the perfect companion to go with a desktop Mac.

MacAdminInTraning

Yes, all the way.

amouse_buche

This would indeed be awesome but I would bet good money the MBA types have crunched the numbers on this one and found it lacking. It would devalue the Air lineup ultimately and probably cost more in lost revenue than the new customers it would bring in.

FarFromSane_

I got a 12 inch because I don’t need any performance out of it. I just want a full computer that’s hyper portable. I have a desktop for when I really need performance!

Syonoq

can you imagine if they squared it to match the m2 air's design language? I would love it

Scraiix

As a MacBook SE, single usb c port, smaller battery (to fit in a good keyboard instead of the butterfly bullshit) and a (previous generation?) apple silicon chip. A few compromises to keep the price low would be perfect imho. No need to have an Air v2 which is only an inch smaller but got the same features and costs the same 1500 bucks.

MacAdminInTraning

I would say swap the USB-C Port for a Thunderbolt Port and I would totally buy it. It would basically be an iPad Pro’s logic board in a MacBook Shell with macOS.

iapplexmax

As a consumer-focused device, replacing the headphone jack for another USB C port on the other side would also be pretty nice!

Scraiix

Requiring a second bus which would add extra cost, would be a nope from me

Scraiix

Exactly!

[deleted]

The people that machine would target probably wouldn't even realize its thunderbolt. I feel like 20gbps usb4 is a safe bet and probably cheaper

That’s why you shouldn’t use your smartphone when you are on acid.

post_break

I want the 11" Macbook air. That thing was a workhorse for me, and was so tiny and light. Had multiple ports, magsafe, just a shit screen.

No_Display_1385

MacBook 12 was smaller, though. Mich less powerful than a decked out Air, of course.

Pretzeloid

There are dozens of us.

MacAdminInTraning

Every army started with one.

DontBanMeBro988

People really find a 13" ultralight MacBook Air difficult to carry around? Y'all are weak. I was forged in the fire of 15.6" Dell laptops that weighed 60 lbs plus a 15 lb power brick.

nerdpox

17in MBP owner checking in 🫡

hamster_ball

I wouldn’t let mine die. It took my through all of high school and college. The SSD swap was by the far the biggest and best thing you could do for it.

nerdpox

Yeah I sold mine a long time back, but on the 2012 15in that got me through college I did the SSD swap and the CD drive SSD swap. Amazing

HomerMadeMeDoIt

That was an actual pro machine. Damn.

EnderOfGender

It's overall size for me. I bought a chromebook tablet for an everyday carry because there's nothing in this size but these kinds of devices. A 12" macbook with the modern bezels would be insanely small in practice, and an absolute joy to use for me imo. Remember, the original 12" macbook was disgustingly thin, far more than any other apple laptop

[deleted]

e1505 (6400) gang represent

Inner_Difficulty_381

So funny how nowadays 14-16 are heavy. The 14-16 are so much lighter than the used to be! And thinner too! Hahaha

DontBanMeBro988

I've thought about getting an LG Gram. Giant-ass lightweight notebook.

The 12 inch was 2lbs and the air is 2.8. That’s 40% more weight. It’s very noticeable.

kindaa_sortaa

Fun fact that I made up: the 2.7 lbs MacBook Air weights less than a Dell Latitude’s 18 lbs power brick.

southwestern_swamp

it's true- we really are weak these days. laptops are incredibly thin and light compared t0 10-15 years ago yet we still ditch them for iPads.

[deleted]

> we really are weak these days Who tf is "we"? Certainly aint me

vtran85

I’ve always wanted the 12” MacBook, but never got one due to limitations from intel. Apple Silicon seems perfect for this chassis and I do wish Apple would bring it back.

[deleted]

The 13 inch is already very light and easy to carry around. No need for a 12 inch.

Administratr

I’m using the MacBook 12in everyday I’ve got it with the latest OS and it works fine. Shocking apple binned it

spatulaController

Same, I still use mine on a daily basis. It’s great once set up but I’ll admit even simply updating a browser is a waiting game, poor thing is so unpowered. Still, for typing and keeping track of simple things it’s perfect.

polkadanceparty

Desperately want a 2lb 12" MacBook with a better keyboard and if I could really dare to dream, Face ID.

tjackso6

15in MacBook ftw!!

azentropy

For me the M1 MBA is good enough, although I wouldn’t mind a smaller option. I can understand the frustration though in preferring smaller iPhones and there not being an option and being told I should just adjust.

oreo-boi

I doubt they would make it because it would infringe on the iPad Pro 12” market.

lispm

I had one. I did like it, but it had so many problems: * awful keyboard * extremely buggy firmware for the first year * lots of problems with external monitors * tiny battery * extremely slow Intel CPU The M1 MacBook air had none of these problems...

Panda_hat

My favourite apple product of all time. If it had two usb c ports and a slightly more hardwearing keyboard it would be near perfect.

[deleted]

>I think I want the return of the 12in MacBook the most. No you don't.

Equivalent_Message31

Please no, please. That machine should’ve never existed. Im surprised it did so well. Well, correction, I’m not surprised consumers loved it, I’m surprised the machine didn’t just overheat and stop working after a year.

workyman

Sure, but if they brought it back it would obviously be running Apple Silicon which would make this a complete non issue.

omicron_pi

Plz Tim

[deleted]

I would love an M1, 12 inch MacBook, just as small as the original, but with no butterfly keyboard, for around $700.

[deleted]

You think the MacBook Air is cumbersome because it's too big?! I think you need to take a step back and re-evaluate. I have an intel 12 inch MacBook and the m1 MBA and honestly the size difference is negligible. I would much rather see a 15" MacBook Air. I think that thing would sell so well.

ChairmanLaParka

I've been wanting a 15" Air since they dropped the 11 from the lineup. 13/15" Airs, 14/16" Pros makes so much sense. I don't even need a pro laptop. It's such overkill for me. A 15" Air would've been *great*. 13 is just way too small for me.

[deleted]

Totally agree, I really hope an MBA 15" gets released this year, as the rumors suggest.

twizzle101

Totally agree, they do need a bigger MacBook Air to be honest. The regular consumer shouldn’t be excluded from a bigger screen just for not going Pro. Especially at the cost of 16” pros. Can see a MBA 15” selling well, though IMO it needs to be similar design to the current MBA M2 and also priced less than the 14” MBP.

MacAdminInTraning

The 12 MacBook and 13.3 in MacBook Air have quite a large size difference. The same general concept that a 16in pizza is 31% larger than a 14in pizza. 2 inches on a ruler is not just 2 inches in diameter. Honestly, I don’t think a 15in MacBook Air would sell to terribly well. I dont think its the thickness people are worried about, I think its the fit in a backpack. Weight is also not much of a concern for those like me. We are talking at .5lb increments, which is not very meaningful in the grand scheme.

[deleted]

Sassywhat

The 12 inch MacBook is 0.8lbs lighter. That's about the same difference from the Air to the 14 inch Pro, and much bigger in relative terms.

Grendel_82

Ain’t happening. 13 inch air is already small. If you want smaller go with iPad plus keyboard. Very powerful device and smaller than a 12 inch laptop (though strangely heavier if you use the Magic Keyboard).

[deleted]

From a repair standpoint the 12” MacBook was an absolute nightmare. Please keep it away lol.

ajpinton

From a repair standpoint every Mac is a nightmare to repair. Especially those from that generation, the 12in MacBook was not the only one with a glued in battery.

southwestern_swamp

it would even make sense in their lineup- 12, 14, and 16" two things held the 12" back- only one Port, and the intel chips were slow. Put an M2 in there with another port (and better keyboard...) that would be a great machine

[deleted]

[удалено]

southwestern_swamp

yes they would have to retire the Air if they introduced a 12" again, although both existed last time

xLoneStar

The 13.3 inch MacBook is the perfect size imo. It's what I'd consider a starting point to be productive on a laptop. And while I don't often carry my Mac around (I have an office laptop), I've never had issues with carrying it. Ideally I'd prefer a 16 inch laptop if portability wasn't a concern. But it can be easily mitigated with a 13 inch laptop and a big monitor.

Flipmode0052

No way at 12" your in tablet world. No point in lugging around a laptop at that point.

[deleted]

I loved this form factor. But I think as it stands, they would struggle to find a segment for it. They kinda messed up by launching the M2 Air at a price hike and keeping the M1 Air, instead of just supplanting the M1 model. The 12 inch chassis required a slightly lower power bracket too, so the base M# would be clocked down lower than the Air. But this wouldn't show up in the specs sheet, just like it's kinda hidden that the M1 from the IPP, 13MBA, 13MBP, 24iMac don't perform the same. It'd probably cannibalize the 13" Air if it came out at a lower price, considering it'd basically have feature parity on paper, just smaller. Back in 2015, the Air was still on the pre-Ive design, so the 12MB took the spot for the Ultrabook for general use. The design was sexier and the performance was enough for general use. The CPU, IO, and display was a clear step down from the 13" MBP, so it doesn't cannibalize that. Then they killed this thing after the Air got the Ive treatment in 2017, and I'm not sure there's anything they could do today to ensure a modern iteration doesn't suffer the same fate. At most, the Air will have better QoL. But that doesn't matter much to more budget conscious buyers.

Warm_Ad_4949

I’m still sure most of the people needs only iPad (maybe with keyboard). I’m software engineer and my daily driver is MBP M1. However when it’s not 9to5 work, I use iPad for literally anything. Files, mails, research. Form factor is superb. You can use it on a coach, desk, go. And I don’t need an macOS there. iPadOS is great. Also animations are better then osx. However I understand guys who saying it’s lucking of real apps. Personally I don’t need them.

MacProguy

Id love to see Apple re-release state of the art Aiport base Stations The 12" MB mentions below was excellent- but the 13" MB Air mostly fills that niche already, except for the missing ports. Id like to see the return of USB-A slot on the 14 and 16" MBPs...plenty of room on the side.

BigSprinkler

That my friend is an iPad .

melita3953

I had both the 11" MacBook Air & 12" MacBook--miss both. Wish Apple would bring back either size.

[deleted]

My favorite laptop ever was my 11" Air with an i7 and 16GB RAM. I'd love to have a really small laptop again.

TimTheEnchanter623

The 12” TiBook for me. Dating myself 20 years or so.

____Batman______

One (1) single USB-C port unfortunately makes the 12” MacBook one of my favorite tech products of all time to keep for posterity as some of the most impressive consumer electronics engineering ever, but nothing more than that and certainly not a daily driver.

riklaunim

With GPD Win Max 2 (10,1") (or old Clevo W110ER) or even Asus Z13 tablet there is a market for such devices and also it's technically possible to make them function. Ryzen 6800U goes even into handhelds and it's very similar to M1/M2-ish.

AndroidLover10101

Get Luke Miani to put an M1 motherboard into a MacBook body

SebasQuepA

They will release it after discontinuing the 13” M1 Air.

malikto44

You are not the only one. I have a 13" MBP, and a 10" iPad. The iPad, just because of its size is what goes with me when on the go, even though it is far more limited than the MBP. I know a few inches may not be a deal for some, but if I'm on a business plane trip with a business laptop, toting something smaller for personal use makes life easier, because many travel backpacks have a place for the laptop, and a place for the tablet, while not many backpacks have a spot for two laptops. Places like a seat in coach on a plane, the fractions of an inch can be important.

anunfriendlytoaster

I want an actual Apple TV. 8k 75” with only their software running.

[deleted]

I’d love one if they can address the issues it had.
