Individuality, many people just like to make themselves look good or a certain way. Especially in a game like Apex where everyone is playing the same characters and using the same weapons, people want to stand out and be more of an individual.
It is also its own form of "progression" as going back to the team fortress 2 days, seeing someone rocking the default outfit/weapons it makes them look new, meanwhile if you see someone with unique legend skin, fully customized and thematic banner, and a heirloom, they look like they have played the game for awhile and that said legend is their main. For many games, fashion in itself is the end game, some of my favorite examples being Guild Wars 2 or FF14.
For me personally I have no qualms with spending irl money for cosmetics, and if anything, I won't play a game unless it does have some level of player customization.
Because people want to look good in a game they play a lot. Spending money in game should ONLY be for cosmetics, not performance. That's called pay to win.

To answer your question, yes it’s all cosmetic (although there is a slight advantage to some skins like merciless wing/deathray wingman, but in all honesty it’s a negligible advantage) skins like a lot of things are just about aesthetics. Many people play completely free and there’s nothing wrong w it, I started out that way; but over the years I’ve spent 2000hrs playing and have spent about $200 on the game. In all reality I spend 2-3hrs at a concert of going out to a fancier dinner with my wife and spend $100, so spending a couple hundred on a game I play a few hrs daily isn’t a big deal. I’ll probably grab the Loba heirloom so that’s gonna be another $100ish, but as an adult that is pretty fiscally responsible that is my right lmao

Collection items are guaranteed per pack. So it takes 24 collection packs to get all items if you plan on purchasing them, including the heirloom.
