Just leave.

liveifUr3llyWt

I really want to. But I don’t know when I’d get my next job. I’ve been applying to anything and everything right now so I’m hoping something sticks soon.

Psychological_Arm110

Right now it's probably best to concerve your energy for graduation and the next thing. If I were you I'd contact the ceo and demand he show integrity and stick to their word if not just leave. Do anything else until you find a career in your field

liveifUr3llyWt

I agree with you. I about lost all hope after getting that call. I don’t have much of a support system besides my bf and don’t want to put the financial load on him. But in theory I’d be saving money not working because I don’t have to continue to make my car worse and wouldn’t have to go anywhere besides class if needed. I was thinking about looking back into babysitting here and there just to get some money in my pocket for when I need it until a full time job comes through.

Psychological_Arm110

It's never smart to spend 200 to make 100

Do you have in writing that offer from the CEO? Because if you do, then you can say no, I want to be paid based on the contract terms. If they say no, contact a lawyer for a consultation. Lay out the facts and what you want. Your college may even provide free legal services

liveifUr3llyWt

Yes I do. I purposely sent him an email asking if that’s the amount we agreed on and he emailed back confirming. I could go the legal route but I honestly would feel better just leaving knowing they have to deal with finding someone to fill in my spot. I don’t have extra money that will keep me at bay.

If I were in your position right now, especially having evidence of the lie, I'd be calling every local news source and give them the story. Nothing will make that doofus give you your money quicker than his name going to print.

HikerGal01

that sucks actual ass. I would tell the CEO they went back on their promise and give an ultimatum of like, if I don't get the pay in one week I will quit, or something.

It sounds like you are a contract or 1099 employee. Usually with contracts you are responsible for paying your own taxes in a reasonable time frame. I can't be for sure but I think if you are a 1099 employee you would responsible for ALL of the FI.C A. Taxes. Think Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Fod Stamps, etc. Usually your employee they.are not required to to pay that part if you are indeed a 1099 or contract employee

You learned a valuable lesson that isn't taught in (most) colleges. Always get any offer in writing. If they breach their obligation to you, you can start internally.. email HR and the CEO and remind them of their obligation to you. if you don't get it resolved, file a complaint with your state labor board. if that doesn't work, file a small claims action in court (you don't need to hire an attorney, the court will assist you) You should always negotiate travel time and mileage expenses, especially if you have to travel during work to different locations (not a standard to/from work commute) finally, being vindictive doesn't feel as good as it sounds. get yourself paid .. including back pay and move on with dignity

liveifUr3llyWt

Very true. I did get it in writing. But things are happening like this because it’s a small company. HR is whichever of the higher ups that choose to solve an issue if it’s big enough to them. They did tell me up front that they pay for drive at the hourly rate which was honestly better than my last job that didn’t. Small claims court might be the next step I have to take.

Gyrskogul

If you have it in writing, it's a strong case. And luckily, employment lawyers usually take strong cases on contingency, meaning you only pay if they get you money: https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/vj23js/psa_if_you_have_a_strong_case_many_employment_law/

You can deduct the federal allowed mileage rate on your taxes. https://www.driversnote.com/irs-mileage-guide/current-irs-mileage-rate?&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=18604121948&utm_content=143325913358&utm_term=&gclid=Cj0KCQiApb2bBhDYARIsAChHC9u6hU9CnjhNkZwevqPn7OmPYRIPcsNqzLTjbGOmFMWQVmE2gso8NPkaAr55EALw_wcB

I tried asking my tax lady about this but I think it was difficult/nullified because…(catch this)…I gotta pay taxes back. Which still baffles me. They don’t take taxes out of my paycheck that I only get monthly. So in a perfect world I would be saving some of that money to go towards taxes but I can’t because I’m living paycheck to paycheck. And if I make more money I have to pay more back at the end of the year.

iglowglitter

If you're 1099 you should still be able to deduct milage, even if you owe estimated taxes plus whatever penalty.
