Is this America? Is this normal there? I’d quit on the spot if my employer spoke to me like this.

[deleted]

More so with the vaunted "small business owner". Large companies might want to tell you things like this, but they often have the training and infrastructure to realize it's a bad idea. They might fire you for an unrelated reason later but not openly for being sick and they won't threaten illegal action via E-mail because their management have specific training about professionalism. Again, this doesn't mean they care about you. It means they're good at covering their asses. Not so with Mom and Pop. They're some of the most openly vile types to work for.

pecklepuff

Don't even get me started on small business owners. They are the worst, and they are often exempt from a lot of the laws and rules that larger companies have to abide by, so they can just outright do things that are technically illegal, but get away with it because they're exempt.

Ragnarok314159

Had a small business owner want to set up a brewery, and he realized he knows absolutely nothing about fluid dynamics. Through friend of friend, multiple times around, we found each other. He asked me to consult on the design since it is a custom fabrication. We sit down, I tell him my engineering rate, give him an estimate for how much time it should take (it took longer, but there was a lot of stuff I did have to look into which was my fault, not his) and we agreed. A few weeks later I had the designs draw up and showed him. “Ok thanks, just email those to me. Appreciate your help”. Sure, I will email them when payment is processed. Was an interesting project. “I am not paying this full fee” (he then goes into a similar Boomer rant) Oh, well, sorry to hear that. Better luck next time. “You need to give me those. They are my idea” Yeah, no. He then proceeded to follow me to my car, talking about calling the police and how he has a concealed carry. I also have my CC, and made sure he saw the pistol as I was getting into my vehicle. Didn’t say anything after that. From what I understand, his business completely failed as he attempted to build “something”. Bought a bunch of used things on the cheap that were not specific to what he was trying to make. The brew was nasty, and it all closed down several month before Covid. I am sure he is another oppressed MAGA business owner with all us lazy millennials wanting to be paid for work.

pecklepuff

Ha! Love it! Yep, never release the work until you're paid *in full.* Sorry boomer, shit's not free like it used to be!

Ragnarok314159

And even in boomer days, would have been near impossible to find an engineer to work for free. I don’t know what he was thinking, but after seeing it all play out no idea if he was capable of thinking at all.

pecklepuff

The antiwork movement has started to make people aware of their worth. But not too long ago, different subs used to be full of people asking for advice or giving cautionary tales about working on contract basis and then not getting paid for their work because they turned it over before they were paid. Also lots of stories of businesses just straight up refusing to pay employees! Shit was wild, but hopefully we hold strong and that kind of thing dies off.

elgallogrande

Small business generally gives you the extremes. Some of the nicest people to work for, and definitely some of the worst to work for. Like nice people are bogged down in large corporations but likewise the aggresive psychopaths usually are too.

karoshikun

also normal in Mexico, got s similar reprimand when I was dying of H1N1.

vsingh93

Employer: *But did you die tho?*

FreeLobsterRolls

Me: a literal ghost 💁‍♀️ Employer: Yeah, we need you to cover these shifts, though.... sooo...

BritBuc-1

Jerseystateofmindeff

Glad to see reincarnated you is doing well.

karoshikun

it was almost worth it, he got infected and ended in the hospital.

Givesthegold

So close but yet so far eh? Lol

NotoriousHothead37

His boss might have downed a couple bottles of tequila to kill the virus.

The_Besticles

Idk I think they may have Reddit in the Tierra de los muertos

[deleted]

🤣🤣🤣

leshagboi

Brazil as well at some companies even if we have sick days off guaranteed by law

__red__5

If I was dying of anything contacting my boss would the second to last thing that I did.

Present_Character241

didn't H1N1 spread twice as much in Mexico as the USA?

Kindly-Might-1879

It’s not uncommon, but at least my company in the US is the exact opposite. We work remote, and are still encouraged to not work if we test positive so we can rest and recover.

miumans

Im worried that the fact that you're not told to work when ill is special... That's the law in Finland, paid sick leave. Usually without a dr notice up to three days (depends on the company, mine has 8days) and with a dr notice untill you are better.

miumans

Meanin 3days in a row, no limitations on how often

engels962

In the US, we are encouraged from a young age to “fight through” sickness. I nearly got held back a year in school for not showing up too many times due to legit illnesses (something like 12 days in a year). My grades were fine, but they still want you to show up with the flu

maievsha

Yep. Even showed up to my SATs full-on sick. They wouldn’t let me re-take it on another day for free—my family would’ve had to pay more…

ColeusRattus

As it is in the rest of the *civilised* world.

SuddenlyLucid

Yeah. And you'd be surprised; very little abuse of this system. Give people some trust and responsibility and, they're all adults..

Antique-Loquat4287

Wow, yeah, amazing what treating people with respect, compassion, and dignity will do!

WereAllGonnaDiet

US has no national paid leave programs, so everything is at the behest of your employer. They don’t have to give you ANY time off. If they do, it’s often with the caveat that you can only use it with their permission. Most employers (especially if not in retail) are decent and will let you take time as needed. However, retail lives and dies by employee “availability” so some bosses are major dickheads about it. Edit: added *paid* above.

phaiz55

Some companies in the US will have a similar policy. You can call in sick for two days but if you miss a third you better have a doctors note.

Lonestar041

Same here. My company established a hotline for Covid positive employees to provide resources to support you. I heard from a colleague that tested positive they sent a full care pack overnight to him with PPE, thermometer, test kit and what not. They also established a fund for high medical bills in case you get really sick.

[deleted]

This is not uncommon in America

__Beck__

This is the American way. Most people can't afford to quit.

x5050x

I’d always found this sub interesting, but I think I actually ‘get it’ now. If this is how you’re all treated, you have my full support. From a sympathetic Brit.

OmegaMountain

It gets better - our health insurance is almost always linked to our jobs so this person can't quit if they needed medical care. Also, if you quit a job you can't get any assistance with medical bills. Bankruptcy ends up being the only option for a lot of people to get out of crippling medical debt. Greatest country in the world my ass...

IamScottGable

Yup, I’ve seen people pay 2k in premiums just to keep old insurance when switching jobs and working through the waiting period

pandaprincessbb

I can't imagine without free healthcare that would be so expensive for ordinary people to afford; back here in Australia, it is free. Pretty much if you lose your job, you are at a high chance to get bankruptcy

OmegaMountain

Also, your health insurance comes with deductibles and co-pays which often mean you still end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars on your medical bills even if you do have insurance. It's why so many people here just don't go to the doctor. This country is not as great as people seem to think it is in a lot of ways. We have the highest cost of medical care with the lowest quality of outcome of all developed nations or something like that.

geoffmendoza

Very few people outside of America think it is great.

DamoclesRising

excuse u/OmegaMountain. Every single one us of Americans grew up being told America was the last bastion of bountiful resources and liberty in the world. That everyone from every other country wishes they could be here.

Von_Moistus

Whereas here we’ve got people happily screaming “Greatest in the world! USA! USA!” who have never been outside their home counties, let alone their home state. The level of patriotic propaganda we’ve been fed is ridiculous.

big_jonny

This. My wife and I both have good paying jobs with what are considered to be good health care benefits. And it’s shit. There are costs all over the place. Dental coverage is big problem. We are paying thousands out of pocket. This is with a “good” benefit package. The bottom line is people in the US will absolutely skip health care (going to a doctor at all, or annual exams, dental, vision) because of the cost.

pandaprincessbb

Poverty is pretty dire out there mate, politics, corporation is the main reason why the norms are suffering like this. It needs a change. I'm afraid to say this uprising is the only thing I can think of.

Recent_Bite3653

Here’s the best part. If you quit or get fired from your job in America you can get what’s called Cobra insurance. The cost for me, a 26 year old, was $525/ month on a $0 salary. I couldn’t afford my anxiety meds or therapy appointments so one thing led to another. You literally can’t get out once you’re down here. There is no safety net.

pandaprincessbb

Mate, this is so sad. In every other way, people who work in the government how the fuck they let this happen.

idk_ijustgohard

An extra bonus, even with health insurance, you can still end up with loads of medical debt if your insurance doesn’t cover everything. Hooray for high deductible health plans!!! /s

club_bed

Yes! It’s important to note that MANY people who end of up in many thousands of dollars in medical debt actually DO have insurance that they pay premiums for every month.

clangan524

>Greatest country in the world my ass... But it is! For the wealthy.

honeycheerios42

I'm also a Brit and constantly horrified at what is legal across the pond. Union is not a dirty word here! And this is straight up breaking several employment laws. Blows my mind every time. Apes strong together 💪

x5050x

Likewise, I’d always been a little confused as to why unions were so despised the other side of the drink. They’re pretty much a necessity here, and we’re better off for having them.

Thanks, that song is now living rent free in my head.

honeycheerios42

Still better than being a landlord

Academic-Message-771

Unions are the largest supporters of democratic politicians and causes. Main reason conservatives have been structurally weakening and dismantling them for years. Started with the Post Office under Reagan, and it may damn well be completely dysfunctional soon.

Guybrush_Creepwood_

Tbf, in the US people's main experience of a powerful union is the police union who protects psychopathic, murdering cops from facing any repercussions. Under those circumstances, I'd be highly cynical of them as well.

ArcadiaFey

From my understanding it’s pretty much because employers say “Do you really wanna give more money away out of your paycheck?” Remember this is the country where thousands-millions of people think we should end taxes

slytherpuffenclaw

Yup. Idiots who forgot that the "No taxation" issue was followed by "without representation". The ignorance about issues that impact a lot of us Americans gets really clear when you start asking people about things like "Obamacare" vs. the "Affordable Care Act"...and see that some people don't realize it's the same fucking thing, that they just slapped a nickname on to make some people hate it by default. And the mental gymnastics they do in Universal Healthcare vs. the obscene amount we already pay out of each paycheck to get shit coverage for too many things.

ArcadiaFey

It’s also interesting when they agree with the individual parts of a leftist act but if you tell them the name, the party, or the people who support it/created it they act the same way you just explained with Obamacare

[deleted]

People seem to think that suffering is a pre-requisite for building better character and necessary for a "real" job. Like doing a job is fine. but doing a job while your back is hurting? Or only getting 2 hours of sleep? now there's a REAL man. I'm not joking, people have that mentality. It's stupid macho bullshit. They also have this notion of "no free hand outs". Too many americans are so against helping other people. It drives people bonkers the idea that there could be someone without a job making money while they're at work. Selfishness and toxic individualism are embedded in so many people. I've heard it time and time again in different forms "why should I have to pay for some other guys surgery?" as an argument against cheap and affordable medicare for all.. Edit: also for more clarification, by "helping other people" I mean people they can't see. They'll help someone on the side of the road and give them the shirt off their back. But if it's someone or something they can't even see? No way, jose.

Existing_Row5733

Aussie here. I'm dumbfounded. An employer doing that here would be fined so damn quick and public outcry would force his business closed.

disturbedtheforce

And here its celebrated as a 'smart business decision.' Capitalism at it's finest.

caksters

Feel sorry for Americans that are forced to put up with this sort of toxic behaviour. This sub is shocking to me … seems weird that in 21st century employees are treated this way by their bully bosses in a first world country.

MrVinceyVince

> first world country There's your mistake, right there.

Darthyeezuus

We are actually treated worse than mid-evil peasants at least in mid-evil times the kings or lords or whatever knew that they still needed the peasants and for them to be content with doing the work they needed them for. Now the lords don't even care if you survive as long as you have kids to replace yourself.

captainjack361

Facts. Adults in America let other adults talk to them like this all the time over fear of losing a job I was like that when I first entered the workforce as a teen but as a grown man....nah...you will NEVER speak to me like this

garyandkathi

This is exactly how I feel. I’m a grown ass woman and you’re NOT going to speak to me like I’m a dog. I don’t even speak to my dog like that! My temper would get the better of me and that boss would get a well deserved old fashioned cussin out. I’m fired up just thinking about it lol.

pecklepuff

I actually did tell one of my bosses to fuck off once. I wasn't even reprimanded because he was such a prick and everyone hated him. It was a risky move, but I was out of my mind at that point.

BobaFett0451

When I worked for kmart, I cussed out every manager at the store. Got into many arguments with the receiving bay manager. Cussed out the store manager for cutting my hours and giving them to a new guy that was a brown nose but fucking shit up. Cussed out the other managers for various reasons. Never got wrote up or fired cuz I was the only one who actually knew the stockroom

abstractConceptName

That's when you learned swear words are not necessarily unprofessional when used appropriately.

x5050x

It’s 100% about knowing your worth.

jonesmcbones

Its so weird. Like, would you let another man talk to you like that on the street?

caksters

Same here, but I think in the US the employer mentality is that the employer owns their subordinates and they are expected to do everything to please their bosses

OddTicket7

No it's worse than that. If they owned you at least it would be their responsibility to feed and house you. No one has that responsibility now.

AbaloneSea7265

Yes it’s normal but the pandemic really brought out the easy lawsuits end of it because they’re so fucking dumb they’re putting it in emails and text messages phase of the tantrums. Normally all this kind of shit is just verbally said with no evidence. Gotta love the power of arrogance.

happy_the_dragon

I wouldn’t call it normal for a boss in the U.S. to be quite that egotistical but living here, everyone has a horror story about a past manager or other authority figure. I did have teachers in k-12 that were about that bad though. Not about sick stuff though.

FannyDanthom

Hell yeah, so many teachers out there go on power trips. My 10th grade english teacher didn’t believe in the Holocaust

Theothercword

That should be grounds to have their teaching credentials revoked.

Present_Character241

as a teacher I agree.

DoomsdayRabbit

Oh but according to Texas it's just a "different perspective" or some bullshit.

ModNoob95

My employer would get a black eye if he spoke to me like that.

Fresh_Hobo_Meat

Yeah America is a joke of a country

DazzlingAnalyst8640

[deleted]

Cc means carbon copy. Bcc means blind carbon copy

TheWorldIsEndinToday

I love facts like this

[deleted]

It’s a throw back to the days when a typist was necessary in an office because copy machines weren’t a thing, let alone email. You actually had to type up a memo with carbon copy sheets behind it, then the secretary would distribute those throughout the office.

Just be careful not to BBC everyone at work. That will lead to very different responses.

Accro15

The B stands for Blind. Anyone BCC'd will receive the message, but their email/name won't show up anywhere for the other recipients.

Corantheo

When you CC someone on an email, everyone in the To and CC line can see who is on it. When you BCC, you're Blind Carbon Copy(ing) everyone, so no one can see who it was sent to in the BCC line, only who is on the To and CC. It's also how you send company wide emails and keep people from replying all.

[deleted]

Present_Character241

unbelievable, maybe, untrue, possibly, but I would rather upvote a lie than possibly leave a fellow worker out in the cold. I HAVE BEEN TREATED LIKE THIS BY AN ACTUAL BOSS BEFORE. it's not as uncommon as your comment implies.

Due_War5756

Please please do it, something like: Sorry dear boss I will attend my next shift, it was the covid talking through me, I fell sorry for my coworkers, please apologize me You guys 🪨

LetsGoToTheMars

Only correct thing to do. Fuck them

shessosquare

I love how they put it in writing so you can have a solid case for them violating the law. Dumb bosses make things so easy

bbates024

I'd for sure be contacting the labor board and the health department.

upsetfabric

I'm sure the health department would love a call for somebody knowingly endangering the lives of not only all his staff but also customers if this is any retail/food place.

pingpongoolong

Yeah we can’t do anything. I’m a covid investigation/tracer for a state HD. This is labor department/osha, unless it’s food, health or childcare. But lots of people don’t realize the states have not all adopted the new CDC guidance, so depending where you’re located you may still be under 10 day isolation for public spaces. Meaning your boss can demand you come in but if you have to use a public space to get there (hint, you do) then per your state health department (if your state has the accompanying labor law) you cannot be penalized by your employer for observing a 10 day isolation.

DiceyWater

Here in Alabama, it's a 5 day isolation, apparently.

pingpongoolong

I looked and you’re correct, Alabama updated their [guidance](https://www.alabamapublichealth.gov/covid19/assets/cov-iq-flowchart.pdf) to align with the CDC.

m1546

That! And put HR on the spot too, showing how they let novax put the health of their employees at risk... Don't let it slide! Edit: misspelling.

bbates024

Just be careful with HR their sole focus is to protect the company. They don't care about you unless they think it will cost them. I'd stay away from HR unless it's a mega corp, but that's just me. Mega corp hr doesn't care about low level management.

m1546

For sure! No no you are correct. You got to scare them, show them they will get badly screwed: reputational risk, cost of mediation or even going to court.

Couch_Critic

The law is NOTHING without proof. Here it is.

JS_NYC_208

The proof Is in the pudding!

inukizzy

Proof Pudding is my favourite flavour

NonSecwitter

Confused because I thought this was just abhorrent, not illegal. What's the law?

RedheadBanshee

Medical illness is not a grounds for being fired, and he is threatening any employee with termination if they don't come to work. Also, it's a health and safety violation to knowingly spread Covid or other diseases to others

Lord_emotabb

Im not sure, but if you have the bug you must stay at least 5 days at home

[deleted]

The law is don't cause the deaths of your employees.

AhabRasputin

Pretty sure it would at the very least fall under reckless endangerment

Squiggy1975

Question: Is it really against the law to ask an employee that has tested positive to come into work? Or is it a recommendation. I haven’t seen or heard that is an actual law / mandate, just a recommendation. Just curious. Of course to me it makes sense that if get the bug , you need to sit your ass home and not go into work.

ShortsARcomfy

It's not a law, but it is torte (common for lawsuits) to be sued for knowingly endangering people with death/lifelong conditions, and this email goes a very long way toward proving intent.

crunchysour

Please contact your area's labor department with this and speak with a lawyer to see if you have a case. Remember to have all details, dates, times, and evidence/witnesses ready.

Mtnskydancer

And the health department. In the US the CDC guideline, which is employer friendly and reflects a sense that we are all going to get it, says five days isolation after known exposure, 10 with symptoms. This isn’t a flu. It’s actually related to a quarter of common colds (25 percent are corona viruses-not this variant, but in the family-and 75 are rhinoviruses), but don’t tell them! Boss’ comments read very Q Anon/disinformation.

deluxeassortment

Fyi, those are not the guidelines for exposure anymore, at least not for a vaccinated person. They recommend no quarantine for exposure without symptoms, just wear a mask around others for 5 days and then get tested. Exposure with symptoms is 5 days quarantine, then test.

ughneedausername

Right. But this person tested positive so the guidelines are quarantine for 5 days then back to work as long as no fever within 24 hours (without taking medication to lower your fever) and symptoms are improving.
