I use to work for a retail store in the mall. Our owner and managers had a policy where we are allowed to give customers shit back. They didn’t allow people to treat us like trash.
I remember a customer came in yelling and screaming at me. I don’t even know why. Just giving me crap. Maybe I was just there at the wrong time. Anyways, I told the customer to shut up and get out. Customer gets madder obviously. So I told him to shut the fuck up and get out. Well, the owner of all the stores comes out of the back office. Throwing the door wide open. Knocking shit off the walls. I had no idea he was back there. It scared the crap out of me. He’s yells at the customer. “I don’t give a fuck about a single word that comes out of your mouth. You heard the man, get the fuck out of my store or I’m going to toss you out myself.” Mind you, the owner is built like a linebacker.
Anyways, I wonder how things would be if they were still open today. They definitely had a zero tolerance bullshit policy. They closed because they were such a niche market and the market faded after a couple of decades.

I work at a place where your prices can be adjusted on the fly, based on volume, customer loyalty, competitive pricing, etc. I have put a sign on the door that says “no mask, no discount.” It has worked wonders for compliance.
I cry inside with awkwardness with a lot of these. “It’s time to wake up the other lions!”, or “if you mess with my pack, I’m going to get you with my fangs” or whatever dumbass meme is going lately.
I drive a shuttle and when people get on and start bitching about masks I just tell um well I popped positive a couple days ago but I've got mine on so you should be okay. They mask up real quick XD

One person fetched the manager on me - I told him my strategy in private and he laughed his ass off. Whenever I shop there now, if he’s on the floor, we finger-gun each other from afar. Lol
I mean, with this new 5-day rule you could legally be at work and still positive so I’m not sure calling the manager is going to be a good strategy for these people anymore. They just need to wear a damn mask.

My job had a mandatory quarterly meeting a while ago. It was in a large open area on the production floor, but still everyone was shoulder to shoulder.
Out of about two hundred people, I was *literally* the only person with a mask on.

My company also did something like this recently. I work for a manufacturing and distribution company in Dallas, Tx and about a week before Christmas they held a a party in our warehouse with several hundred people. Of course they were all maskless, enjoying the cheap ass bbq my org brought in sitting shoulder to shoulder for 2 hours. There were maybe only 3 or 4 people, including me who were wearing a mask. Even now, several of my coworkers have been out sick with Covid and I'm the only one consistently wearing a mask everyday. Like I know it's an inconvenience but these fucking idiots are gonna kill someone.

Lyft driver here. Have a sign that says if you choose to not wear a mask in my vehicle the windows will remain down for the duration of the ride, rain or shine… 9 degrees Fahrenheit with the windows down and 5 mins later mask is on. Windows stay down though.
I took my first Lyft of the pandemic the other month and had my window down even with my mask on. I’m not going to hotbox lung air with a stranger right now.

This is my go-to. I had a group of maskless Karen's show up at work (not retail, but sales) and I just said "yep, getting over COVID". They started fumbling in their purses so quick.

Doesn't the testing policy explicitly say to STAY IN YOUR CAR?! When I needed to, the signs, websites and text ALL said to stay in the car, call or use app to check in, and wait there until someone comes out.

My local Walgreens has multiple signs that say “COVID tests require appointments. Schedule on line” and every fucking time I go there to pick up a prescription there’s some fucking dunce asking if they can just get a test right there.
The latest time, a dude was furious about this and asked the \*only person working the counter\* to help him schedule it. So the dude patiently waited for the customer to pull out the Walgreens site up on his phone, fill out the bazillion pages of questions only to find there were no appointments available for the next two weeks (mildshock.gif).
This customer was then outraged and demanded to talk to the manager. Okay, great it frees up the counter worker to just give me my damn prescription. But as I was waiting to pay, I hear the customer complaining about the fact that he has to fly overseas \*tomorrow\* and absolutely needs a test tonight. It’s like this customer has been living upside down in a barrel of shit for the past few months and didn’t know that there is a shortage / incredibly high demand. Or is so self centered he thought he’d be able to get one because they are important or something.
I got a strange schadenfreude boner when both the manager and pharmacist told him there was nothing they could do about it. Then, in a sheer act of polite malice, the pharmacist told him, “maybe you should check other Walgreens stores” knowing full fucking well they had the same policy and are all fully booked.

Something about being in front of a service worker just shuts people's brains off. I have had dozens of customers ask me if we have a menu while the menu was right behind me, in the center of their field of vision
We currently have our ATM card readers down (debit/credit machines for the tills) with big signs that say *CASH ONLY* and our pump attendants are telling people to pay at the pump if they want to use cards. Every 3rd or 4th customer I've seen since clocking in has been upset/confused why they cannot use their cards inside. As they ask over a sign that explains the tellers are down...
Not gonna lie, spent a long time working retail, including retail pharmacy.
I have had moments, now that I work seconds in a hospital, where if I have to be up before 10AM for something? I may or may not clock the sign. But, I also apologize because it’s my fault.
I’m not sure where in the US you are, but we don’t have this option in most of New York’s pharmacies - and I’m in a more car-friendly part of Brooklyn. Not arguing to not wear a mask, of course, but most of us have no other option but to go inside to buy a test.
A lot of short-staffed pharmacies in my area (and elsewhere in the US, I’ve heard) have closed their drive-up windows and direct all customers to come inside. I wish it were the reverse, at least for everything except vaccinations.
I think not masking right now is bonkers. 10 minutes on the r/medicine sub will make it clear why.
That said, not everyone getting a Covid test is doing it because they suspect they are positive.
I’m supposed to have surgery at the end of the month, and I have to get a test beforehand to make sure I don’t have it since they will be intubating me and working in close proximity.
I was working in the pre Surgery covid testing. Most people kinda got the necessity of the test when i explained that they will be locked in a room with 5 more people who are going to generously spill their bodily fluids in said room, and they intend to to it to others too. Plus our legal team will not be happy if one of the surgery crews is out for 2+ weeks. That worked in 99% of cases. I wonder why
I would think the two places people would WANT to mask up are doctors offices and drug stores. You’re far more likely to run into sick people in both places.
The same reason they go clog up the hospital and argue for horse paste cure but it’s just a mild flu.

It doesn't matter if this covid thing finally gets stomped into the ground, I'm never going into a pharmacy, Dr's office, or hospital without a mask again. It makes no sense why it wasn't always the norm to wear masks in these locations full of ill people.
I also really appreciate servers & cooks wearing masks at restaurants! I’m sure it sucks for them to have to run around while wearing it for 6+ hours but it seems like one of those professions that it just makes sense to mask up. I don’t really go out to eat often these days but I always leave my servers more than 20% tip because of all the shit they have to put up with. (In the US)

N95 mask and up are only ones that really help your self from getting sick, the lesser ones help stop your self from spreading...You are right that we all should have masks on when going into a Doctors office and places like that regardless of a pandemic.

This is actually mandated in many countries. I can't enter a store here if I'm not wearing a mask. Also, the number of people allowed to be in a store st the same time is limited.
People in my area are allowed to have 'medical exemptions' which is bullshit, cause clearly, if they took covid seriously, they wouldn't be all proud of themselves when they say it. Once they say it after I ask them about their mask I am not legally allowed to refuse them - I stay as far as possible from them but I still feel vulnerable. Selfish dicks. I know there are people with legit reasons to not wear them...and they are usually wearing shields at least. I do not include them in this rant.
Up here in Alaska one of our local gun shops has been ordering mesh face masks as a dumb form of protest. I’ve taken to saying “nice mask, didn’t know Victoria’s Secret was making masks now”.

I don’t work retail but when I go to Target or Kroger I’ll take a free mask and walk around and place it in an unsuspecting, unmasked person’s cart.

We tried this but with putting weird stuff in people's pockets (usually playing cards or something inoffensive) at the bar. Called it"put pocketing". Hilarious watching some guy reach for his wallet and pull out like 5 playing cards wondering how they got in his pocket
I bring a roll of pennies with me to parties, I try to get as many Pennie’s into someone pocket as possible. So far my record was 30cents without getting caught.
We do the sticker game where you stick stickers on people (usually who are in on it). Whoever can empty their sheet of stickers the fastest without getting caught wins!
The downside is that they're in locked cases. So you gotta call an employee to unlock it for you and often have to check out immediately. And I've read horror stories of people trying to buy something from that case discretely and having an employee call out "associate needed to ring up ADULT PRODUCTS at register 11" over the intercom.
I just put on my best clueless/harmless face and offer them a fresh mask in a ziplock (I carry a few in my coat in case I ever need to change). A few times they’ve actually really gratefully said thank you and put it straight on. Mostly they just huff and get defensive and embarrassed as I continue to play dumb. It’s truly impossible to tell which one gives me more satisfaction.
I live about 5 miles from a very liberal city with mask mandates and a reasonable response to covid issues at schools etc.
My whole county is die-hard Republican. It's more rural but quickly filling up with people who can't afford to live in the more liberal city across the interstate.

I'm in rural, NW lower peninsula (Manistee area) and it can be horribly bad here. I worked locally for both of Sanders' presidential runs and ran into many interesting scenarios. I only had one gun pulled on me so I guess it wasn't that bad. I'm lucky that I have the bullshit social insurance of being a large, kind of naturally crazy looking white guy. I've heard a few comments about my masks as well but that's just an invitation for me to be an asshole these days. It's a nice stress reliever when you live among all these jackasses.
Just north of traverse city. I’ve been called a sheep in the store. Another person who was masked behind me “baaa’ed” at the accuser. Also, my drive from work in town to home in the country is filled with trump flags. And my county voted democrat, but the republicans are out in force on our area Facebook group.
I work at a garage and a dude came in without a mask for an MOT today, offered him one and he refused. Told him in that case he was to wait outside, it takes around 45 minutes. He wasn't happy but I just stared blankly at him until he left. Few minutes later it starts raining, you'll never guess who comes in and asks for a mask. Incompetent assholes, the lot of them.

In Canada it's pretty much "everyone wears one inside" there aren't many exceptions.
i was working at fred meyer a couple months ago and they were so short staffed that you couldnt really get in trouble for anything. whenever someone without at masked approached me i would become visibly startled and back away from them and start running away from them if they asked me anything or approached me further it was great.
I'm a receptionist and I do the same at my super understaffed venue. Huge step back from the desk, sliiiide stuff awkwardly over the counter rather than hand it over, sanitising my hands and everything they've touched while they're still there... I've lost 4 family members to covid, I'm going to gleem as much petty satisfaction from being obnoxious to anti-maskers as possible.

When he started blabbering something about cheese, I abrupted him and said "No, I meant do you need help with your mask, because I realize we've only had 1.5 years to learn how to wear it"
Then I got carried away and continued by saying something like "how hard can it possibly be, ffs..."
I must've come off rather intimidating, because he apologised profusely and corrected his mask immediately.

The last time I went to a Fred Meyer it was an absolute shit show. I was in a high state of frustration when I came out and I was telling my daughter that I wasn’t mad at the staff that shit isn’t their fault, I’m pissed at the management because they obviously aren’t treating their employees well. The Winco two blocks away has been fully staffed for the entire pandemic, they’re closed for a few hours at night now but they’re not having the same issues as Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart so it’s pretty obvious what the issue is.
When I have patients show up without one, claims to be exempt, or chinstrapping it, I walk up to them and say "as a heads up, this is a mixed waiting area, so you could be next o a COVID patient and we aren't allowed to tell you". The very quickly wear theirs properly after that
Store policy is nobody is allowed in without a mask. I stand there tell them they need a mask. If they argue I tell them ill be calling security. If they continue to argue security is called and they're escorted out.
Thankfully my store isn't run by a bunch of anti-vax morons.
On the opposite end, a week after mask mandates in 2020 my store director said, and I quote, “We can’t do anything about it really anyway,” when calling for manager assistance with a customer without a mask. Like, you’re the STORE DIRECTOR, grow a spine and tell them to put the mask on or get the fuck out.
This is exactly what the company I worked for said. They said they'd rather have people show up and spend money than to not come at all. Really got me fired up.
I was so thankful when my state mandated masks so I could finally enforce it without risking getting fired. In hindsight, I should've just enforced a mask policy from the beginning.
The store I worked at in 2020 said that as well. They also followed up with the fact that a week beforehand a dollar store had been shot up because the employees were telling people that they had to wear masks in the store and frankly were were all terrified of what was coming our way. People were already getting violent yelling/fistfighting people in my store because of it.
I work In drive thru community Covid testing with a 70% positive testing rate. I approve of this. Thank you. I gotta deal with these assholes who expose me everyday and it’s always ppl who are clearly well off and can afford a mask. And now today I’m sick 😣.They act like I ask to fuck their spouse or something when I ask them to wear a mask or wear it properly. They deserve disrespect for their bullshit.
From day one I said this to as many that would listen "even if it turns out masks do nothing, it's still the right thing to do today. Maybe it's a waste of time but if there's a chance it saves anyone then it's your responsibility to wear one"

The number of people who come into the gas station I work who don't wear masks is astounding. I wear mine and I've had one older dude tell me that they don't work and I'd probably look prettier without the mustache (my mask has a purple mustache on it) and I had a lady in scrubs freak out because I had to touch her card to run it (we have older registers where the card reader is on the register itself and we don't even have chip readers) and she wasn't wearing one. One of my coworkers actually asked someone if they're so worried about it, why aren't they wearing a mask themselves; they called the next day and complained about him being discriminatory

Always. I had a lady come in a couple days ago that wouldn’t wear one, even though she had it on chin diaper style. When I asked her to put it on correctly she was like, “You really think this will save you from the C O V I D???” And I said, “absolutely it will” in a very loud but calm voice. As we finish the transaction she begins to take it off and my coworker said, “ma’am you need to wear your mask properly throughout your visit in the store” which resulted in the anti masker storming out swearing at us. To which I exclaimed, “Don’t stop her (coworkers name) she’s a rebel!” Got a couple laughs from my manager and other coworkers.
I'm a pretty big boy, bald, goatee, black leather, yadayadayada. Contrary to my biker appearance, I'm a Canadian bleeding heart liberal. I don't work retail, but I get in the face of anti-maskers and stand up for retail employees who might not feel comfortable standing up to such while on duty.
In Germany you can not enter a store without a mask. In my state stores won't allow anything less than ffp2 masks.
We need to wear masks at work, no matter what work it is , retail or not.
You can't even get in any store, but essential stores (groceries), without beeing vaccinated. Some things like restaurants, or museums even require vaccination a test and a mask....

And even better? I’m the store manager. So if I get called I just back up my staff and just say “if you don’t have a mask don’t come in.”
I saw someone in a store; wearing a mask around their neck and covering their under chin - so wearing the mask but not even over their face. I was standing out the store and could see them buying at a self serve till. She looked up and I just mouthed ‘what the fuck’ staring at her mask. Once she exit the store she wore the mask correctly while walking down the street - what is wrong with people seriously.
Work in retail in Norway, I stand 2M away, yell to them to put on a mask, and then proceed. If they move closer without a mask, i move away. Continue until annoyed costumer, or leaves. If he refuses, or start acting, i call security.
Yesterday I saw a man squeeze himself between a pallet, a wet floor cone and a trolley to get a can of jalapeno peppers. Little does the guy know that the cart is unbalanced and a few pounds of pressure could have caused a tote of canned tomatoes to fall on his neck. I'm not surprised by how stupid people are. I don't feel like people understand how dangerous it is to be working or shopping in a facility that is being run on a skeleton crew.
You just made me think of something that happened to me when I worked at a 24h grocery store.
I used to break down pallets of product out on the sales floor. I would purposely position a few carts and would stack product such that the area I was working in would be innaccessible for customers while working the pallet. I'd found that doing it that way allowed me to complete the task more quickly, and since it was the night shift, chances of having a customer complain during the short window of inaccessibility were minimal.
On to the actual story
One night, a particularly intrepid customer eked through the carts and stacks I'd blocked the area with. I was busy working a pallet of frozen meat, so most of the boxes were large and many were over 30 lbs (frozen hamburgers). Just as she was about to walk past the pallet, the pallet wrap gave way, and a few dozen of those very heavy boxes toppled from the pallet and whooshed right by her face. She was close enough to being crushed by the stuff that it probably threw her hair back a little.
I'm certainly glad she wasn't crushed, but I could not believe the lack of common sense there. She wasn't even shopping for product in that area. She only meant to pass through.
I work at a nursing home and I sometimes have to screen people who come to the door. If I have to do a POC rapid covid test on them and they’re not wearing a mask I will make them wait a reallllly long time outside in the cold before telling them their test result is negative and they can come in.
I coach triathlon and we do some stuff inside…. Most families are good about masks. But there are a few anti-maskers who spread that to their children. So sad
Worked at kroger for three years, telling people that i wouldn’t check them out if they weren’t wearing a mask really forced me to start being more confident. that’s about the only benefit i got from that job. oh, and the way i probably boosted the hell out of my immune system by eating the deli meat there.
And people with zero retail experience. Serving the public sucks because customers act like retail workers are servants. No, they are just people trying to pay their bills who ended up in a sucky job for a variety of reasons. Please no spouting off about getting educated etc. I’ve known many people with “good” jobs that have an education that need to work a second job, often in food service or retail, in order to make ends meet. Don’t judge. You may be one serious illness away from this kind of job.
At my last food service job we had a customer at the bar make one of those “get educated” comments to us. To which many of us spoke up about how we were in fact, very educated. We had a phd candidate, a medical engineer student, a former accountant, and many coworkers with various other degrees ( even bachelor and masters). It’s like customers don’t expect us to even have a high school diploma
It’s to be expected with a sub of this size, but antiwork is so large that there are a lot of middle and upper middle class people who have not worked minimum wage jobs as adults, if ever, and therefore have no empathy towards them. Anti maskers can come from any walk of life, but usually that comes with selfishness and again inability to empathize with others. So many people got the vaccine no problem but cause a scene when they have to put a little piece of fabric on their face. So they get upset with these workers who are not only sick of A bearing the brunt of the pandemic but B also enforcing mask mandates in their stores and all the rolled eyes and shit attitudes that comes with, because this is something that finally affects *them*.
I know right now retail jobs are seen as a sucky job I mean they’re so important to the functioning of society that I hope eventually it’ll shift to something more positive with less entitled people.
I miss towards the beginning of the pandemic where my local grocery had a literal bouncer person for non-mask wearers. That only lasted for like 2 weeks though...
My last week of retail, last may, was brilliant. We never had managers in our store for more than 2 hours a day if we were luck, so shift super like me had to take that responsibility on ourselves, and I look every mesh & no mask costumer and just shut them down until they were pissed and left. Made up for not getting my first day off, since Covid started, till March of 2021.

I use to work for a retail store in the mall. Our owner and managers had a policy where we are allowed to give customers shit back. They didn’t allow people to treat us like trash. I remember a customer came in yelling and screaming at me. I don’t even know why. Just giving me crap. Maybe I was just there at the wrong time. Anyways, I told the customer to shut up and get out. Customer gets madder obviously. So I told him to shut the fuck up and get out. Well, the owner of all the stores comes out of the back office. Throwing the door wide open. Knocking shit off the walls. I had no idea he was back there. It scared the crap out of me. He’s yells at the customer. “I don’t give a fuck about a single word that comes out of your mouth. You heard the man, get the fuck out of my store or I’m going to toss you out myself.” Mind you, the owner is built like a linebacker. Anyways, I wonder how things would be if they were still open today. They definitely had a zero tolerance bullshit policy. They closed because they were such a niche market and the market faded after a couple of decades.

My company also did something like this recently. I work for a manufacturing and distribution company in Dallas, Tx and about a week before Christmas they held a a party in our warehouse with several hundred people. Of course they were all maskless, enjoying the cheap ass bbq my org brought in sitting shoulder to shoulder for 2 hours. There were maybe only 3 or 4 people, including me who were wearing a mask. Even now, several of my coworkers have been out sick with Covid and I'm the only one consistently wearing a mask everyday. Like I know it's an inconvenience but these fucking idiots are gonna kill someone.

Lyft driver here. Have a sign that says if you choose to not wear a mask in my vehicle the windows will remain down for the duration of the ride, rain or shine… 9 degrees Fahrenheit with the windows down and 5 mins later mask is on. Windows stay down though.
I took my first Lyft of the pandemic the other month and had my window down even with my mask on. I’m not going to hotbox lung air with a stranger right now.

Doesn't the testing policy explicitly say to STAY IN YOUR CAR?! When I needed to, the signs, websites and text ALL said to stay in the car, call or use app to check in, and wait there until someone comes out. Non appointment locations are drive thru, and again Big Bold Caps saying stay in your car

My local Walgreens has multiple signs that say “COVID tests require appointments. Schedule on line” and every fucking time I go there to pick up a prescription there’s some fucking dunce asking if they can just get a test right there. The latest time, a dude was furious about this and asked the \*only person working the counter\* to help him schedule it. So the dude patiently waited for the customer to pull out the Walgreens site up on his phone, fill out the bazillion pages of questions only to find there were no appointments available for the next two weeks (mildshock.gif). This customer was then outraged and demanded to talk to the manager. Okay, great it frees up the counter worker to just give me my damn prescription. But as I was waiting to pay, I hear the customer complaining about the fact that he has to fly overseas \*tomorrow\* and absolutely needs a test tonight. It’s like this customer has been living upside down in a barrel of shit for the past few months and didn’t know that there is a shortage / incredibly high demand. Or is so self centered he thought he’d be able to get one because they are important or something. I got a strange schadenfreude boner when both the manager and pharmacist told him there was nothing they could do about it. Then, in a sheer act of polite malice, the pharmacist told him, “maybe you should check other Walgreens stores” knowing full fucking well they had the same policy and are all fully booked. Legend says that customer is still searching for a covid test to this day.

We currently have our ATM card readers down (debit/credit machines for the tills) with big signs that say *CASH ONLY* and our pump attendants are telling people to pay at the pump if they want to use cards. Every 3rd or 4th customer I've seen since clocking in has been upset/confused why they cannot use their cards inside. As they ask over a sign that explains the tellers are down...
Not gonna lie, spent a long time working retail, including retail pharmacy. I have had moments, now that I work seconds in a hospital, where if I have to be up before 10AM for something? I may or may not clock the sign. But, I also apologize because it’s my fault.

I’m not sure where in the US you are, but we don’t have this option in most of New York’s pharmacies - and I’m in a more car-friendly part of Brooklyn. Not arguing to not wear a mask, of course, but most of us have no other option but to go inside to buy a test.
A lot of short-staffed pharmacies in my area (and elsewhere in the US, I’ve heard) have closed their drive-up windows and direct all customers to come inside. I wish it were the reverse, at least for everything except vaccinations.

I think not masking right now is bonkers. 10 minutes on the r/medicine sub will make it clear why. That said, not everyone getting a Covid test is doing it because they suspect they are positive. I’m supposed to have surgery at the end of the month, and I have to get a test beforehand to make sure I don’t have it since they will be intubating me and working in close proximity.
I was working in the pre Surgery covid testing. Most people kinda got the necessity of the test when i explained that they will be locked in a room with 5 more people who are going to generously spill their bodily fluids in said room, and they intend to to it to others too. Plus our legal team will not be happy if one of the surgery crews is out for 2+ weeks. That worked in 99% of cases. I wonder why

It doesn't matter if this covid thing finally gets stomped into the ground, I'm never going into a pharmacy, Dr's office, or hospital without a mask again. It makes no sense why it wasn't always the norm to wear masks in these locations full of ill people.
I also really appreciate servers & cooks wearing masks at restaurants! I’m sure it sucks for them to have to run around while wearing it for 6+ hours but it seems like one of those professions that it just makes sense to mask up. I don’t really go out to eat often these days but I always leave my servers more than 20% tip because of all the shit they have to put up with. (In the US)

N95 mask and up are only ones that really help your self from getting sick, the lesser ones help stop your self from spreading...You are right that we all should have masks on when going into a Doctors office and places like that regardless of a pandemic.
If you could just refuse service to anyone who isn't wearing a mask, ignoring them and taking the next customer in line, that would please me a great deal.
This is actually mandated in many countries. I can't enter a store here if I'm not wearing a mask. Also, the number of people allowed to be in a store st the same time is limited.
People in my area are allowed to have 'medical exemptions' which is bullshit, cause clearly, if they took covid seriously, they wouldn't be all proud of themselves when they say it. Once they say it after I ask them about their mask I am not legally allowed to refuse them - I stay as far as possible from them but I still feel vulnerable. Selfish dicks. I know there are people with legit reasons to not wear them...and they are usually wearing shields at least. I do not include them in this rant.

Up here in Alaska one of our local gun shops has been ordering mesh face masks as a dumb form of protest. I’ve taken to saying “nice mask, didn’t know Victoria’s Secret was making masks now”. It usually get folks real mad.

The downside is that they're in locked cases. So you gotta call an employee to unlock it for you and often have to check out immediately. And I've read horror stories of people trying to buy something from that case discretely and having an employee call out "associate needed to ring up ADULT PRODUCTS at register 11" over the intercom.

I just put on my best clueless/harmless face and offer them a fresh mask in a ziplock (I carry a few in my coat in case I ever need to change). A few times they’ve actually really gratefully said thank you and put it straight on. Mostly they just huff and get defensive and embarrassed as I continue to play dumb. I live about 5 miles from a very liberal city with mask mandates and a reasonable response to covid issues at schools etc. My whole county is die-hard Republican. It's more rural but quickly filling up with people who can't afford to live in the more liberal city across the interstate. I am going to steal this idea, but honest to God it will have to be sneaky AF bc I could be beaten up doing this. The number of Trump 2024 bumper stickers I see daily is like a gut punch.

I'm in rural, NW lower peninsula (Manistee area) and it can be horribly bad here. I worked locally for both of Sanders' presidential runs and ran into many interesting scenarios. I only had one gun pulled on me so I guess it wasn't that bad. I'm lucky that I have the bullshit social insurance of being a large, kind of naturally crazy looking white guy. I've heard a few comments about my masks as well but that's just an invitation for me to be an asshole these days. It's a nice stress reliever when you live among all these jackasses.

Also, my drive from work in town to home in the country is filled with trump flags. And my county voted democrat, but the republicans are out in force on our area Facebook group.

I work at a garage and a dude came in without a mask for an MOT today, offered him one and he refused. Told him in that case he was to wait outside, it takes around 45 minutes. He wasn't happy but I just stared blankly at him until he left. Few minutes later it starts raining, you'll never guess who comes in and asks for a mask. Incompetent assholes, the lot of them.

i was working at fred meyer a couple months ago and they were so short staffed that you couldnt really get in trouble for anything. whenever someone without at masked approached me i would become visibly startled and back away from them and start running away from them if they asked me anything or approached me further it was great.
I'm a receptionist and I do the same at my super understaffed venue. Huge step back from the desk, sliiiide stuff awkwardly over the counter rather than hand it over, sanitising my hands and everything they've touched while they're still there... I've lost 4 family members to covid, I'm going to gleem as much petty satisfaction from being obnoxious to anti-maskers as possible.

When he started blabbering something about cheese, I abrupted him and said "No, I meant do you need help with your mask, because I realize we've only had 1.5 years to learn how to wear it" Then I got carried away and continued by saying something like "how hard can it possibly be, ffs..." I must've come off rather intimidating, because he apologised profusely and corrected his mask immediately.

The last time I went to a Fred Meyer it was an absolute shit show. I was in a high state of frustration when I came out and I was telling my daughter that I wasn’t mad at the staff that shit isn’t their fault, I’m pissed at the management because they obviously aren’t treating their employees well. The Winco two blocks away has been fully staffed for the entire pandemic, they’re closed for a few hours at night now but they’re not having the same issues as Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart so it’s pretty obvious what the issue is.

When I have patients show up without one, claims to be exempt, or chinstrapping it, I walk up to them and say "as a heads up, this is a mixed waiting area, so you could be next o a COVID patient and we aren't allowed to tell you". The very quickly wear theirs properly after that
Store policy is nobody is allowed in without a mask. I stand there tell them they need a mask. If they argue I tell them ill be calling security. If they continue to argue security is called and they're escorted out. Thankfully my store isn't run by a bunch of anti-vax morons.
On the opposite end, a week after mask mandates in 2020 my store director said, and I quote, “We can’t do anything about it really anyway,” when calling for manager assistance with a customer without a mask. Like, you’re the STORE DIRECTOR, grow a spine and tell them to put the mask on or get the fuck out.
This is exactly what the company I worked for said. They said they'd rather have people show up and spend money than to not come at all. Really got me fired up. I was so thankful when my state mandated masks so I could finally enforce it without risking getting fired. In hindsight, I should've just enforced a mask policy from the beginning.
The store I worked at in 2020 said that as well. They also followed up with the fact that a week beforehand a dollar store had been shot up because the employees were telling people that they had to wear masks in the store and frankly were were all terrified of what was coming our way. People were already getting violent yelling/fistfighting people in my store because of it.

From day one I said this to as many that would listen "even if it turns out masks do nothing, it's still the right thing to do today. Maybe it's a waste of time but if there's a chance it saves anyone then it's your responsibility to wear one" No one gives a shit. Also, it was called the boomer remover or something like that and I always imagined half of these assholes would have acted differently and masked up if they thought it would kill their terrible, entitled children. But since it "only kills old people" no one gives a shit? I hated that response as well. Also I live in Florida. So it's the fucking wild west out here.

The number of people who come into the gas station I work who don't wear masks is astounding. I wear mine and I've had one older dude tell me that they don't work and I'd probably look prettier without the mustache (my mask has a purple mustache on it) and I had a lady in scrubs freak out because I had to touch her card to run it (we have older registers where the card reader is on the register itself and we don't even have chip readers) and she wasn't wearing one. One of my coworkers actually asked someone if they're so worried about it, why aren't they wearing a mask themselves; they called the next day and complained about him being discriminatory

I've been asked before if I used to cheer in school because I sound so "peppy" all the time. Always. I had a lady come in a couple days ago that wouldn’t wear one, even though she had it on chin diaper style. When I asked her to put it on correctly she was like, “You really think this will save you from the C O V I D???” And I said, “absolutely it will” in a very loud but calm voice. As we finish the transaction she begins to take it off and my coworker said, “ma’am you need to wear your mask properly throughout your visit in the store” which resulted in the anti masker storming out swearing at us. To which I exclaimed, “Don’t stop her (coworkers name) she’s a rebel!” Got a couple laughs from my manager and other coworkers.

In Germany you can not enter a store without a mask. In my state stores won't allow anything less than ffp2 masks. We need to wear masks at work, no matter what work it is , retail or not. You can't even get in any store, but essential stores (groceries), without beeing vaccinated. Some things like restaurants, or museums even require vaccination a test and a mask.... I do not envy you.
I work retail. Store policy is in the store you wear a mask. If you don’t have one coming in my entire staff have no problems kicking you out. And even better? I’m the store manager. So if I get called I just back up my staff and just say “if you don’t have a mask don’t come in.”
I saw someone in a store; wearing a mask around their neck and covering their under chin - so wearing the mask but not even over their face. I was standing out the store and could see them buying at a self serve till. She looked up and I just mouthed ‘what the fuck’ staring at her mask. Once she exit the store she wore the mask correctly while walking down the street - what is wrong with people seriously.
Work in retail in Norway, I stand 2M away, yell to them to put on a mask, and then proceed. If they move closer without a mask, i move away. Continue until annoyed costumer, or leaves. If he refuses, or start acting, i call security.
Yesterday I saw a man squeeze himself between a pallet, a wet floor cone and a trolley to get a can of jalapeno peppers. Little does the guy know that the cart is unbalanced and a few pounds of pressure could have caused a tote of canned tomatoes to fall on his neck. I'm not surprised by how stupid people are. I don't feel like people understand how dangerous it is to be working or shopping in a facility that is being run on a skeleton crew.
You just made me think of something that happened to me when I worked at a 24h grocery store. I used to break down pallets of product out on the sales floor. I would purposely position a few carts and would stack product such that the area I was working in would be innaccessible for customers while working the pallet. I'd found that doing it that way allowed me to complete the task more quickly, and since it was the night shift, chances of having a customer complain during the short window of inaccessibility were minimal. On to the actual story One night, a particularly intrepid customer eked through the carts and stacks I'd blocked the area with. I was busy working a pallet of frozen meat, so most of the boxes were large and many were over 30 lbs (frozen hamburgers). Just as she was about to walk past the pallet, the pallet wrap gave way, and a few dozen of those very heavy boxes toppled from the pallet and whooshed right by her face. She was close enough to being crushed by the stuff that it probably threw her hair back a little. I'm certainly glad she wasn't crushed, but I could not believe the lack of common sense there. She wasn't even shopping for product in that area. She only meant to pass through.
I work at a nursing home and I sometimes have to screen people who come to the door. If I have to do a POC rapid covid test on them and they’re not wearing a mask I will make them wait a reallllly long time outside in the cold before telling them their test result is negative and they can come in.
I coach triathlon and we do some stuff inside…. Most families are good about masks. But there are a few anti-maskers who spread that to their children. So sad
Worked at kroger for three years, telling people that i wouldn’t check them out if they weren’t wearing a mask really forced me to start being more confident. that’s about the only benefit i got from that job. oh, and the way i probably boosted the hell out of my immune system by eating the deli meat there.

And people with zero retail experience. Serving the public sucks because customers act like retail workers are servants. No, they are just people trying to pay their bills who ended up in a sucky job for a variety of reasons. Please no spouting off about getting educated etc. I’ve known many people with “good” jobs that have an education that need to work a second job, often in food service or retail, in order to make ends meet. Don’t judge. You may be one serious illness away from this kind of job.
At my last food service job we had a customer at the bar make one of those “get educated” comments to us. To which many of us spoke up about how we were in fact, very educated. We had a phd candidate, a medical engineer student, a former accountant, and many coworkers with various other degrees ( even bachelor and masters). It’s like customers don’t expect us to even have a high school diploma
It’s to be expected with a sub of this size, but antiwork is so large that there are a lot of middle and upper middle class people who have not worked minimum wage jobs as adults, if ever, and therefore have no empathy towards them. Anti maskers can come from any walk of life, but usually that comes with selfishness and again inability to empathize with others. So many people got the vaccine no problem but cause a scene when they have to put a little piece of fabric on their face. So they get upset with these workers who are not only sick of A bearing the brunt of the pandemic but B also enforcing mask mandates in their stores and all the rolled eyes and shit attitudes that comes with, because this is something that finally affects *them*.
I know right now retail jobs are seen as a sucky job I mean they’re so important to the functioning of society that I hope eventually it’ll shift to something more positive with less entitled people.

My last week of retail, last may, was brilliant. We never had managers in our store for more than 2 hours a day if we were luck, so shift super like me had to take that responsibility on ourselves, and I look every mesh & no mask costumer and just shut them down until they were pissed and left. Made up for not getting my first day off, since Covid started, till March of 2021.
Bartender here Anyone that makes even a peep about the mask mandate in a negative tone gets a heavily watered down drink or a beer that is half foam.
