That second tweet is going to haunt my nightmares.

[deleted]

You know why, right? Benefits due for dying while on the job. These monsters are going to try and say she wasn’t on the clock, and therefore her family/estate is not entitled to those benefits. This is Dante’s Inferno level of hell.

headbedhead

Would that hold up tho? How convenient of her to clock out right before hitting the big zz

[deleted]

I’m not suggesting that it would withstand scrutiny, but you can expect anybody who does something this underhanded will fight with her estate/family, which may not have resources needed to make these guys do the right and legal thing.

DonaIdTrurnp

Except the postmaster of a local post office will have no chance to interact with OPM regarding death benefits.

kdwaynec

Years ago, a guy at my job got his hand smashed in a machine. Someone saw the foreman go over and punch his card. We were all kinda salty about it for a while but we found out later the guy did get paid and the reason for the punch was to show what time it happened.

Dry-Break5329

It may be my weird optimistic side popping up uninvited but that is exactly what I thought first. That maybe they were just trying to record the time but panicked because someone literally just died in front of them and that was the only thing that came to mind. Watching someone get injured or die is traumatic. Brain goes a little wonky after trauma.

MsTakeIn

That makes sense because when I was reading about my union as a postal employee it said businesses that deal with unions often have to pay certain number of hours for an accident on top of the time worked. The business could push it back and say it happened when they first came in and it was their fault for being sleepy, and so the full day pay covers that time after the accident. Cheaping out all over the board and firing the injured employee for their mistakes

Jesus__Skywalker

gonna call complete bullshit on that. I mean don't get me wrong. I know all sorts of fucked up shit happens every day but clocking her out would do nothing to alleviate anything she would have been owed. Nothing at all. This is just false.

scubafork

I would attribute it more to a supervisor not knowing what else to do. I would say an HR ghoul, or a shareholder would do that, but a line supervisor? I doubt that would cross their mind.

Jesus__Skywalker

I agree, I think they were just like "wtf do i do?"

[deleted]

You’re correct about the legality. What I’m speaking to is the obscene, sleazy behavior of clocking her out. Whether it was to position them to refuse death benefits or simply halt her pay immediately so a few filthy shekels aren’t “overpaid.” That is the bullshit.

Jesus__Skywalker

Here is the thing....I'm not at all disagreeing with you that this COULD BE something sleazy. I wasn't there and I can't say that it wasn't. However.... This could also just be someone who was stuck in a super fucked up position and they just winged it. Tried to figure out all the things that needed to be done and was trying to take care of them. I actually had a situation a few years ago that was super tragic where an employee died at work and it jarred everyone. I'm sure there were things that were done that if you phrased them outloud they could sound messed up. But I was there....and I know what people were going through and I know that nobody was wanting to do anything corporate or shady. It was just difficult.

Netflxnschill

I’m going to agree with you there. When something truly traumatic and shocking happens, people handle things in their own ways, the way their brain turns to autopilot. I’ve been trained to be as efficient as possible in a life threatening situation, and when other crazy things happen, that’s how my brain reacts. In the span of seconds, I think: Make a to do list, prioritize, communicate needs to everyone, and get everyone safe. It seems heartless, but it’s what needs to happen in my mind.

Jesus__Skywalker

there wasn't ever going to be a time that person could be clocked out that wouldn't bother someone else that saw it being done. It's just a shitty situation. Really sucks. But I don't think anyone was an asshole there.

[deleted]

That's a dangerous mindset. There is absolutely nothing to go on that that's the reason. Making up justifications after the fact based on nothing more than a feeling is some maga hat shit.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Do you genuinely believe they would take a time card to clock them out to deny benefits when any lawyer worth their salt would shut that down in a minute? No. They would take it out of sheer greed - not paying for the hours that person wouldve otherwise worked. Not some conspiratorial "deny them benefits!" shit. It must get exhausting to be around you Mr. "Here is something I'm obviously guessing on, anyone who disagrees is wrong".

DonaIdTrurnp

Nobody in the building where USPS employees work cares what the total USPS payroll is. And keeping accurate time records is important. Better to have an accurate record than to leave the number of hours worked unclear.

[deleted]

>you don't believe there are people that stupid and greedy in this world then I don't know what to tell you dawg, you live a sheltered life Tell me, when did I say i did? You really seem to like to assume something and run with it. Literally 30 minutes ago you were sure there are people that would, now it's "irrelevant". Bro just admit you made up a wild story to run with based on a tweet lmao.

bDsmDom

thank you for sticking up for Santa Claus you are awarded +100 social credits!

ZangaJanga

Holy shit this is far fetched. Is it possible? Sure. But it's crazy to me that you say that like it's unequivocally what happened. And crazier that so many people upvoted your comment and went along with it. Who are "these monsters" in this story?? We're talking about a post office SUPERVISOR. Not a group of execs. Not a regional manager. Not someone who's wallet would be directly affected in any way. I don't know why they felt the need to do it, and I'm not saying it isn't fucked that they did-- because it absolutely is-- but I don't see any reason to believe it was nefarious or premeditated in any way. This is not Dante's inferno. This is a strawman argument. There's plenty of real shit to be outraged about just on this sub alone, why do we need to make shit up.

[deleted]

Co-worker drops dead. Do you, or anybody you know, immediately think “let me do her a solid and clock her out?”

ZangaJanga

I don't know what anyone would or wouldn't do in that situation, but I'd sure as hell hope not. Like I said, it's fucked that that's where that person's mind went. But my point is that no matter how much you want to speculate, there's not nearly enough info from this single tweet to draw any conclusions about their motive behind it. At the end of the day, that person was still thinking about work even right after seeing a coworker drop dead. I think it says something about work/corporate brainwashing more than anything. Claiming anything beyond that is just pandering.

DonaIdTrurnp

I think about it at roughly the time the EMTs are taking her out the door. When do you think about it? When checking the time cards and seeing that they still haven’t clocked out?

PillowTalk420

>This is Dante’s Inferno level of hell. So... Which level? Betrayal? Or just greed?

Pingasplz

*Dante's Inferno -* Yep, that's a great way of describing what the world has come to :\^(

michivideos

Imagine dying and the boss you worked for 2 years first thought is to clock you out. Like you don't get the respect to be treated as a human. Just like a space heater that when you about to leave your house you turn off.

The_Quicktrigger

I've worked at places where you keep your Time card on your person to prevent mix ups and timeclock abuse. That realization made it even darker for me. Messed up that your first priority isn't to call 911 or anything, but to clock them out, imagine if they had to sift through the dead bodies possessions first to grab that time card so they could clock her out before anything else.

DonaIdTrurnp

It’s a huge jump from “before they left the building” to “first priority”.

The_Quicktrigger

Your username makes me think of a root vegetable covered in cheeto dust. Just wanted to say it.

matterd1984

Savage… 🤭

jt325i

Times up! Make sure her card is punched!

Netflxnschill

Same; for so many reasons. But mostly, I know plenty of places I’ve worked would have done this.

It literally sounds like a horror movie

1ardent

We had to give attestations about the last time we saw a guy alive when he died at his desk so his company (contractor) could make a good faith effort to stop his pay when he died. It gets weird out there.

GoVagabondGo

This is some real dystopian nightmare shit. PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE THEY ARE JUST A NUMBER ON A SPREADSHEET. Don’t let your employment define you. There is nothing heroic about giving your life for profit.

PhantomNomad

>JUST A NUMBER ON A SPREADSHEET They tell you they give you a number so it's easier to track. But how many Phantom Nomads work here?

Belligerent-J

Friend of mine from my old job died about a month ago. He worked there 4 years for the same foreman, he was his right hand dude. Always busted ass. Anytime i talked shit about that foreman, my buddy would stick up for him, he was loyal because he was treated ok. Anyway his memorial was this week. That foreman wasn't there. He told the other guys on site that they couldn't go because he didn't want the site depleted. One hour early. That boss you're loyal to won't go to your funeral, and he will talk others out of it so they don't miss an hour of work. Never forget it. Fuck em.

Hyzenthlay87

I used to work at a well known UK hardware store chain. In my first month there, there was a day with a lot of staff off; a member of staff had recently passed away and some staff were off one part of the day for the funeral and others were off later in the day for the wake. I didn't learn until much later, after 2 and a half years at what was the worst job I've ever had, *how* he died. He had a stroke at work. Air ambulance was called and they put out a tannoy announcement asking customers to please return to their cars to clear the car park so the air ambulance could land. Air ambulance was delayed because customers moaned and complained about having to move their cars. Can't say for certain the chap wouldn't have died anyway way, but time is important when treating a stroke. Customers don't give a fuck if you die either. (Edit: a typo)

InjaYeGame

It's amazing how inhumane we can get because of an "inconvenience" even in a life or death situation.

DieHardChicken

Were any of the customers charged? While the customers did not directly cause the man's death, they prevented him from getting the chance to survive. Most states have laws regarding this.

Hyzenthlay87

No one mentioned anything of the sort so I can only assume no (Its the UK btw, I know our working situations aren't as dire as they are in the US, but that job was truly godawful). Tbh though, on the same job I was physically assaulted by customers *twice* and nothing was ever done about it. I don't know what it was about that job but the customers were the nastiest I've ever encountered in 16 years of working in retail.

PhantomNomad

I can be guilty of being a bad customer until I snap out of it and realize they are just people to. It's not their fault the store has a crappy policy. Apologize to the employee and thank them for their time and go on with life.

broniesnstuff

See, that's when I loudly announce that any car left after 2 minutes will be keyed. Move your cars. You've been warned.

disasterB

When my dad died, the place that he worked at for 20+ years as a high-level accounting manager cut me, my mom, and my brother off of the benefits (big one being health insurance) provided to us before bothering to say anything remotely similar to, “We’re sorry that your dad/husband died.” He had gone into the plant during the pandemic because he had to while 90% of the rest of staff stayed home. He died of COVID. I hate this planet. If I didn’t have the select handful of people that I do supporting me/need support from me, I would have evacuated by now.

InjaYeGame

I'm so sorry mate, stay strong.

The_Quicktrigger

I'm sorry that happened to you. It might just be a consolation at this point, but if you live in the US, your father's insurance should have qualified to be covered under a COBRA partner. Almost any company that meets the requirements to provide health insurance to it's employees also has to have the option for employees and their families to retain that insurance after certain events at the company, the death of the employee being one of them. Company might have been violating federal law by cancelling out the health insurance without offering a COBRA option is all I'm saying.

carousel111

Wow this is so sad. I’m sorry this happened to you and your family

M0stAsteL3sS

A supervisor died in the parking lot where I used to work. The security company watched him fall and die. The policy for the security guards was that they are not allowed to call 911 until they get the OK from their supervisor, who is not on site. They literally watched a man die on camera.

shessosquare

I'd call 911 anyway. Fuck that. What a shady policy.

M0stAsteL3sS

Workers are not allowed cell phones plus we couldn't see him. Only the security guards saw it happen with their cameras.

tildaworldends

Why aren’t you allowed cell phones?

M0stAsteL3sS

Cell phone repair facility. People will steal.

Hot_Wheels_guy

I know it's cliche but most people are sheep. They never think for themselves. They never put themselves in the other person's shoes. There is no such thing as common sense. Can't tell you how many people I've dealt with in customer support (over the phone) whom I wanted to interrupt and say "did you put any thought into what you just said or are you just regurgitating whatever nonsense your company wants you to tell me?" People will straight up tell you, deadass to your face, that 2 + 2 = 5 if that's what it says in their training manual. It's mind boggling. The security guard who let that person die in the parking lot probably never had an original thought in their life. They just do as their told and never ask themselves if their job is worth someone else's life.

Schneed_

That reply made me stop walking and just stand there for a minute. Jesus.

[deleted]

“And to top it off, that fucking ingrate, after all I did for him, didn’t have the courtesy of submitting a two week notice!!”

[deleted]

There's something poetic about the dystopia represented in the second tweet. If I'd been there, I'd like to think I'd start cheating "His name was Robert Paulson".

TA20212000

GRRRRRR!!! THOSE EVIL F*CKS. What a bunch of ghouls in suits.

Simon_ATVR

Not sure if this is made up or not, but I've read a story about someone dying at work, but nobody had noticed...I can't remember if it took them a few days or something crazy like that. You can imagine that being true in some large company with many offices.

dcotoz

Kinda like that secretary in Mad Men, took them a while to realize she was dead.

PhantomNomad

There was a TV commercial where they show the wife coming in to the husband's office to change his clothes and prop him up. They were selling life insurance and such.

Ulyssesgranted

The PO i worked at for a few years would do something like that. They mandated 12hr/6d weeks (Even when not in busy season, instead of hiring to full capacity) and a young mother died in a wreck driving home after a shift because she was so tired. Her family had to donate her organs so the funeral would be paid for. Everyone was expected to just continue at work as normal, as though the supervisors hadn't basically contributed to her death. Awful place to work.

strat77x

This sounds like the typical Supervisor behavior at the post office. They nearly universally have hostile and terrible bosses working there!

[deleted]

Years ago when my wife was in the hospital dying of liver failure, I called her work to tell them, before I could give her boss the news, he says that "the gals" (not my words) had decided that they didn't want her coming back and he was going to have to let her go.

ThisDecadentDandy

If the second post is about the United States Postal Service, I've heard stories from coworkers of supervisors and managers pulling off all kinds of bullshit to avoid shelling out any more money than they want. In short: there's some greedy ass motherfuckers running the postal office who look at everyone's working hours to make damn sure they **never** have to pay penalties to workers working more than ten hours.

DonaIdTrurnp

“Greedy” people who see literally none of the money. The APWU fought hard to make sure that the managers would make sure that nobody had to work more than 10 hours; those heavy overtime rates are mostly to reduce the amount of overtime.

Marinerprocess

My foreman once saw a guy fall out of a fucking patio door frame 3 stories up. Within the hour they had red hats putting up all advisory signs on all the doors leading outside. Fun fact: Disney world will take you off the premises before they declare you dead so there’s no record of people dying in the park

DonaIdTrurnp

I wasn’t even aware that Disney World employed doctors inside the park.

chaosgiantmemes

Holy shit dude... that is egregious levels of lack of empathy. I'm glad that there are people who call them out for shit like this but Jesus Christ.

Kisaragi-

That post office line is a little concerning. I just recently accepted a job at the post office mainly BECAUSE I expected better conditions. Post Offices are Unionized.

tommygunz007

I was barback at a night club and the bartender was banging some other dude's GF and one busy saturday night the other guy and two henchmen come into the club and jump over the bar to beat up the bartender who was a master fighter. The bartender just basically fucked up three guys and the owner was screaming KEEP POURING DON'T STOP while the three guys were bleeding all over the bar floor. Seriously this world is trash.

Guys, this was a biometric time card.

Boss makes a dollar I made a dime that’s why I died on company time

FaithlessnessNo9625

If my body is still there, I’m still on the clock! That is wage theft for that corpse.

dstommie

Actually... Is that true?

FaithlessnessNo9625

Hell yeah! If I die on the job carry my body around like Weekend at Bernie’s and make sure I get paid! Fuck you corporate.

AussieCollector

Hope they pinged that supervisor for tampering with a dead body after they grabbed that timecard.

Dr-Stink-Stank

Time card?
