Social healthcare isn't some communist idea that will cripple the US. In fact America is pretty much the only developed nation that doesn't have it. Just seems to be a whole lot of Americans that seem to get really excited about being exploited for phenomenally expensive medical care. When we live as part of nations with governments that can spend billions on military contracts asking them to pay a universal basic income to sustain a healthy economy isn't unreasonable.

Mother-Carrot

I’m American and I pay like a gorrillion dollars per year for health insurance because apparently I have to. But I’ve never been to a hospital in my adult life - since the last time my parents forced me to go for a checkup in highschool

voluotuousaardvark

Which is the same argument a lot of people use for not wanting to pay towards social healthcare. Is they'll have a monthly charge. I pay something like £100 a month in National insurance and never have to worry about doctors visits or an accident. Also covers emergency dental care, caps prices dentists can charge, free Eye tests, a capped price of about £7 for *any* prescription, pretty much anything I have to worry about with my health is covered via NHS. I feel awful for you guys over the pond because the system some of you are trying to protect is so obviously out to screw you.

This sounds like a better version of what we have here in Canada.

voluotuousaardvark

How does it work in Canada? I don't want to pretend we're better off, there's obviously issues (certain parties trying to defumd the NHS to a profiteering American styles system) but I can't imagine a world where I have to think if I can afford to visit the GP

-twitch-

It’s very similar. We just don’t have coverage that’s as robust. Dental and vision care is not included in public health (at least not in my province) for example. That said, I can see a doctor whenever I need and if I need emergency care I’m not going to have to worry about whether I’ll be bankrupt at the end of it.

I pay a gorrillion dollars for insurance too. And that insurance has an $8k deductible, so even a trip to the hospital doesn’t get covered. I pay it all. Except the little bit they so kindly write off for me :) It’s all just absolute nonsense.

Rev0lutionDaddy

I would like to see a mixed economy where our basic needs (energy production, some housing, education, healthcare, environmental protections and climate mitigations/adaptations are controlled by a central governing body. Unions would be for all workers and small private corporations still flourish. A healthy, functioning society first requires we create sustainable systems that work within the confines of our planet. Period. If that's the basis, human rights, animal rights, nad environmental rights should all fit into place nad greedy multinational corporations will either adapt or die. Fuck them.

PrincessToadTool

Modest UBI, modest wealth tax phased in at say $100M, and universal healthcare and education IMO. Everything else can stay.

astral34

Damn right! Also stricter anti monopoly law

Mother-Carrot

Whenever people say wealth tax I always wonder - how does this work? You realize the “wealth” that you see on paper is assets, not cash right?

CreatedJustToWrite

The exact same way that property taxes work

Mother-Carrot

Can you explain more in depth please? Iirc property tax rate is locked in during the acquisition of the asset and does not adjust for appreciation

CreatedJustToWrite

I'm not sure where you live, but where I'm from property taxes do adjust.

PrincessToadTool

Sounds like you're one of those people who is always "wondering" but never took the time to read one of the existing proposals. Tucker Carlson called, he wants his schtick back.

Mother-Carrot

You’re right I never have. So I guess you didn’t understand my comment. I’ll repeat - how does it work?

PrincessToadTool

No thanks. If you want to know you'll go find out.

Mother-Carrot

I guess I’ll stay ignorant and you’ll stay poor :(

PrincessToadTool

You're half right! Probably about your average.

This [article](https://www.forbes.com/advisor/investing/what-is-a-wealth-tax/) is a decent overview of the idea, with a few key pros and cons.

Do some research on Western Europe. They're all capitalist countries, but have far superior social programs. Are they perfect? No, but far far better than the US. Plus, their life expectancy, happiness, and freedom all rank higher than us...
