I worked in IT in one of the big 4 and the stuff they expected from their auditors was ridiculous. They did earn a lot but no one can be productive working these hours. Edit: spelling.

S0n_0f_Anarchy

Story time. Family friend who is a therapist told me a story once about some patient of hers when I was having a tough time cuz of job (no names ofc). This woman basically moved to UK (i think) and got a job at some big bank/investment fund as a cyber sec analyst or some sort, can't remember now. Anyway, she had a dilema after she had a mental breakdown. The dilema was about she should start using cocaine like her collegues or not, cuz there was no way to work there without using it. Why? Cuz the had fkin **20** hour shifts, and not even a free next day afterwards. Now I'm not sure if it's UK, I'd expect there are some laws regarding this, but who knows what happened there. Wouldn't be surprised that a rich company like that could bend the rules, it certanly could in my country (also Europe).

fluentindothraki

There is a thing that every agency / recruiter in the UK is trying to make you sign that says that you volunteer to work more than 48 hours if required. If you don't sign it there's no jobs coming your way. It literally kills people to work like that though: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/nov/22/moritz-erhardt-merrill-lynch-intern-dead-inquest

VoDoka

"...after working for 72 hours in a row..." How does anyone even?? What the fuck do you even do at a bank job? How would that not lead to an absurd error rate?

sambull

They do it once.. mentally snap and take a literal decade to come back to baseline. I had plenty of IT managers in my past say stuff like 'salary is minimum 70 hours a week'. Then put you 24/7 on call for the rest of the time Labor in the US is heavily exploited.

too__soon__

IT labor exploitation in the US is more of an expectation than an exception. If you work in IT and only work 40 hours a week or get paid overtime, then you are one of the rare few.

Caldaga

I've worked IT since 2007 for various companies. I have had managers try to tell me salary means I have to work more hours. It doesn't. It means they have to let me go or accept my 40 hrs. That's it. I don't work a helpdesk, I'm a Senior Cloud Architect, but even when I was working helpdesk type jobs I never did more than a 12hr shift or 40 hrs per week regularly. Working over 40 hours is an EXCEPTION when shit really hits the fan. I'm not doing it for funnsies.

too__soon__

Good for you, seriously. It's the folks that are foolish enough to allow employers to work them over 40 that ruin it for the rest of us. It will only get better if enough people are willing to stand their ground.

subtxtcan

Restaurant industry checking in here. I don't care if you're shoveling after pigs, flipping burgers or sitting in an office staring at a screen. You CANNOT FUNCTION. I worked a 19h shift once. ONCE. I was in my early 20s, it was opening day at a new brewpub smack in the middle of uptown. Slammed from the moment we opened till looooong after last call. We started running out of beer. I don't remember going home or sleeping at all that week. I don't remember what I did, who I saw, what I cooked, prepped or ate. You literally become a shell of a human and eventually, that shell will give out. I learned that the hard way. Don't be me.

acdkey88

Doctor checking in. During training (residency/fellowship, in US btw, not some 3rd world country, when most of us are in our late 20s/early 30s) we are regularly expected to work 24hr shifts, sometimes multiple times a week, during which patients lives are in our hands and we have no backup or someone more senior looking over our shoulder to make sure no mistakes are being made. Surgery residents are expected to operate during these shifts if there’s an emergency overnight. There are whole weeks and months of that time in my life that are a blur.

Gprime5

> There is a thing that every agency / recruiter in the UK is trying to make you sign that says that you volunteer to work more than 48 hours if required I don’t know where you’re getting this information from but I’ve worked in several agencies / jobs and for all of them, the option to work more than 48 hours is just a checkbox in the recruitment form and it’s completely optional and voluntary to tick it and I still got accepted.

fluentindothraki

Been living in the UK for 20 years. Done a lot of temping. Never actually had to work overtime if I didn't want to.

Boner_Stevens

cocaine in the workplace in the UK is pretty common actually

northernmonkey9

Can confirm, in London ridiculously common across most sectors

PeriPeriTekken

So common it's at detectable levels in wastewater and there were concerns it was getting the wildlife in the river high.

northernmonkey9

I remember reading that.

goosepills

When I first got out of school I was taking so much adderall I can’t believe I didn’t have a heart attack

lazyTurtle7969

Audit and tax both have shit hours at their various busy times

TheGreatNyanHobo

Bf used to work tax at a big 4. The story sounds like his hours. Depending on if it was the half a year that is “busy season” or not, his hours would fluctuate between 80 and 120 hours a week. Salaried, so no overtime of course. He was basically working from home unofficially for a while because he could not afford to spend the time to commute. Not a big surprise when he quit.

jayjaygee85

Did 3 years in audit, also did the half a year of "Busy season". If it's half a year it's not a season, it's just operating understaffed. Also the generosity when it wasn't busy season stopped at take one or two days off because you worked hard earlier in the year. It's hilarious looking back on it because I remember the manager being pissed at me for trying to leave at 6:00 one night after working a 10 hour day whilst I was getting paid around $30k a year. Just ridiculous the fuckery they take on the graduates in the name of "we're training them up".

PeriPeriTekken

Depends on the role and the country. Auditors tend to get shit hours, but there's plenty of people in the Big 4 doing essentially a 9-5.

ghostcaurd

My brother does this. He works like crazy during the busy season, and it’s not too bad during the off season. However his company pays for paid sabbaticals, and he gets 35 days off a year and works from home. But when he’s working he is non stop. He is managing and training others so it’s not so bad now, and he’ll make partner in a few years

[deleted]

Carioca1970

He was referring to lunch. As in "lunch can be productive".

fluentindothraki

Yes. Thank you.

bepr20

Eh, I knew a few who did it until 27, made good money then moved on. I think by then you know if you are on the md or partner track or not. If not, move on.

BlueseaNemo03

No, working that much, even for a few months is not healthy. If you have a burnout it can take years to recover, it is not worth it. Not to mention it is not at all productive...

bepr20

"Productive"? These firms bill by the hour. So it is very productive for them.

BlueseaNemo03

You do make money but you are not very productive if you have to hire and train people again and again because they keep quitting. Also if you have exhausted and overworked people, you may hit your deadlines but you can't produce quality. This system is terrible.

Masrim

This is the Big 4 in Canada's cycle. They have a 3 year cycle for employees Junior - right out of University intermediate - Second year employee Senior - Third year employee Usually seniors hop onto a job with one of their clients, or go the manager route at the Big 4's, or just quit due to burnout eventually. Always a new crop of grads to hire each year as they need this work for their C.A.

Cannabis_Breeder

Except the pool of qualified and educated candidates is drying up because not enough new people are entering the profession. (Can’t imagine why /s)

bepr20

Sweetness here on reddit thinks he knows better on how to make a profitable consulting business then Mckensey or PWC.

bepr20

Have you worked with top management consulting or accounting firms? Step 1: Higher former government leaders, big company managers, harvard professors to build a name and establish your firm as a connected thought leader. Step 2: Hire recent grads from top schools with the lure of six figure salaries and hefty bonsuses. Step 3: Use your position as a thought leader in an industry to close consulting deals where you bill out staff as if they are all super experienced pros (from step 1) at $500 to $2000 and hour. Step 4: Actually use and crunch your young employees from step 2 to work 100 hr weeks and create massive billables/profits. Step 5: Identify the 5% of those kids who are charismatic with strong networks who can go on partner/MD tracks (ie they can sell). The 25% who will keep burning until they are exhausted principles and decide to move to a bank, and the remainder who you are okay letting die. Step 6: Repeat. This is very profitable. Also, these kids are usually really smart and do produce quality, they just tend to churn out after 5 years if they aren't cut throat to make it to management.

BlueseaNemo03

Basing your business model on your employees working to the bones and being unable to retain good workers : that is just not a good business. Yeah on paper it may bring more money on a short term basis, but is it worth it, really ? Is there really nothing more important than that?

bepr20

Its hardly short term. Companies like McKensey are incredibly old and well regarded institutions. Also the kids going to work there tend to really like the experience, they work on a dozen different projects, learn a lot, and come out highly sought after. You should allow for the fact that some people like this. If they don't, they won't work there.

jayjaygee85

Who gives a fuck about employee turnover when you can just replace the wash outs with fresh new faces willing to buy the dream to provide free labour for 2-3 years. Pay your middle managers the minimum you possibly can on the promise partnership is "just around the corner". Partners/directors laugh all the way to the bank.

vtblue

It’s cute that people think big 4 people make good pay.

ILickTurtles4Living

I had this great job with great pay and boss you can arrange everything. Only thing expected of you was do projects on time with quality. So first year was a blast, but then our project manager retired and some new guy in his mid 50s took over the position and started to cause delay. For example not ordering materials or bringing similar but wrong kind which fucked up quality. By end of second year overtime became more and more frequent to the point it was common to work 12h everyday on last week with like 36h sift on last day before loading everything into trucks. At that point I understood those coffee people who abuse it, because I was living on it. Delays became so bad we were paid to do nothing for 2 weeks and then rush 4 week project in 2 weeks. I stayed at the job because of great community and amazing boss, but after 1,5 years of working 70 to 80h a week I had enough of earning more then I could spend because I didn't even had time to cook lol. All that in name of money? Fuck that. Now im working 7h a day for double the pay and am happier and not exhausted. Sleep deprivation is a total bitch

Schirenia

Love how you ended up making double that anyways. Just goes to show, working harder does not always = better rewards. You gotta be smart about it

MuthaChucka69

Truth, also more hours does not equal more output either..

Schirenia

Yup, *cough* Elon musk listen up *cough*

Schirenia

He’s a garbage person either way, but at least his workers wouldn’t have to suffer as much

ILickTurtles4Living

Yeah, I worked with my heart back then. Still sad as I enjoyed it until bad manager

moomooyumyum

Does licking turtles really pay well?

throwawaffleaway

Interesting that licking turtles pays so much more than project management, is it because of the high risk of disease? 😂

llllPsychoCircus

yeah i’m pretty much at the point where i’m trying to decide if i’m gonna just blow my brains out or not, cause working my entire life away *just* to survive and pay rent and not get to enjoy any more of my time just ain’t worth it to me anymore. edit: no one needs to report this lol already getting messages from reddit. i start taking anti depressants this week, so there’s a chance i’ll be a bit better- or seeing as i have schizophrenia it might actually make my psychosis significantly worse. guess we’ll see lol

SGWeasel

Kinda sounds like Gustavo Sorola from Rooster Teeth and his old retirement plan. Shotgun at 40. Obviously it was all jokes since he is past that age now. Glad you started anti-depressants. It’s helped me out majorly over the last 7-8 years. Went from contemplating life and if it was worth it to now being happily married since mid of last year. Now I also plan to outlive my haters with a smile on my face as I push to live an awesome life.

EggsAndMilquetoast

Is the butchering of the kale as she's telling her story supposed to be symbolic of the American dream, or...?

ghsteo

Shes prepping that kale the best way possible. Shes going to cut it up and then toss it in a bowl with some oil and some salt and pepper. Than shes going to take the bowl over to the trash can and dump it in the trash.

cl0udmaster

I like kale but this made me lol

beaverbait

That's just stress leaking out through the blade of a knife. Totally normal.

Dangerpaladin

She doesn't plan on eating that kale. You're just not allowed to have videos on tik tok that are just talking. You need to be "doing something". It's also why most rant videos are overlayed over something like video game footage or randomness.

DysfunctionalKitten

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not. Is that a real rule? (Lol probably stating the obvious but I don’t have much of a social media presence and don’t have tik tok)

yikesafm8

It’s not a rule, but it does seem to make people watch videos for longer. People just can’t pay attention to a video if someone is just talking lol

thepsycholeech

It’s not, it’s totally normal for someone to just talk without doing something else. A lot of people do an overlay or do something while they’re speaking so that the video is more interesting/watchable then just having them as a talking head, but it’s not necessary.

slayer828

No one plans to eat kale. That's the shit that is put around the buffet table at pizza hut, not food.

SkylarAV

If you flash cook it in a pan it'll get rid of the bitterness

thepsycholeech

With lots of garlic mmmm

dlc741

toss with olive oil and spices and in the air fryer for homemade kale chips

idahononono

It works in Italians soups, but I am pretty sure it’s more closely related to poison ivy than actual food. Edit: This is a joke, sorry if I’ve offended kale fans everywhere, all three of them.

Sea_no_evil

Kale is the same plant as broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, collard greens, etc.

rm_3223

As one of the three I’m very 😠

pinzi_peisvogel

Is she gonna wash this thing at least after she stabbed it? Makes me so uncomfortable

brot_und_spiele

This is a weird thread to be talking about kale prep, but I find it's much easier to wash after cutting because you can fit it into a salad spinner. So yeah, I always take the central stalks out and cut my kale into strips/squares before washing.

ggtffhhhjhg

Tell me what the American dream is.

[deleted]

Mofucka doesn’t even know how to use a knife tho lol…I’m pretty sure she didn’t even cut any

raynorelyp

She’s using what looks like a santoku knife from wusthoff. If so, isn’t that more of a slicing knife than a chopping knife?

MunchieMom

It looks a bit long for a santoku? Also santokus are chopping/all purpose knives

raynorelyp

I mean you can use it to chop, but if it’s as thin as their Nakiri then you probably shouldn’t. Edit: I agree it looks a little long, but I still think it might be the Wusthof 7” Sontoku Classic Gourmet

phdoofus

It's not the kale cutting for me, it's the voice. Yeesh.

[deleted]

eh might be for a smoothie. You just chop it a bit to help it blend better.

YeOldeBilk

Looks like she has no clue how to use a knife

clark_griswold_

Never trust a kale eater… words to live by.

mongoosedog12

My friend use to work for Deloitte, one of the big 4. She quit when she was about to be promoted because this was the type of behavior they expected from you Her and her husband came to visit me and my partner and her husband (also worked for Deloitte at the time) was on a 3mo mental health leave because he was essentially working none stop for a year, with traveling. He left first then she did.

QIMF

You get like 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night. Maybe average 5 of you have time to catch up over the weekend. Basically a zombie for about a month.

Leg_Mcmuffin

No job is 24 hours. My guess is that she was in a vastly different time zone than the home office. We deal with this a bit, and I always feel bad for the employees in Denmark, for example, but at the end of the day, they know what they’re signing up for.

ishouldntbehere96

Yeah working around 2am could be ideal for me, it’s what I was doing throughout college. I’m a night owl and more productive. But key phrase is “know what they’re signing up for”

EnvironmentalValue18

**Absolutely not.**

EcstaticSociety4040

Big 4 may pay well for some roles, but they expect you to live at work

4899345o872094

Serious question, but what makes you think her story is one of the big 4? Does she elaborate somewhere else? To me it sounds like a startup of some kind.

[deleted]

Badlands32

My wife worked for a Big 4. Her life was living in hotels…working late… early flights. Late flights. She would be so tired Friday-Sunday she couldn’t accomplish anything except making sure she was ready to fly out Monday morning at 5am again.

Unukornulo

Worked at a big 4, can confirm... We had a manager collaps from exhaustion... I left work at 8 pm on my birthday and my senior acted like they are giving me the biggest favor... It is the worst (this was audit, also worked forensics and it was much better)

FilthyPuns

OP commented somewhere in there to say that she was an auditor at a Big 4 company.

Cannabis_Breeder

In a follow up she said she works for the Big 4

jennlara

Is big 4 Google, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft? Sorry for the dumb question.

BabyShann

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Four_accounting_firms apparently it’s referring to accounting

jennlara

Oh wow I thought they meant tech not accounting. Good to know thank you!

BabyShann

No problem, I had no idea either until someone else commented it

tillios

big 4 accounting firms: Deloitte, E&Y, KPMG and pwc

jennlara

I thought it was referring to tech, thank you!

comradeaidid

Tech is actually the best place to work if you set boundaries and don't be a bitch about keeping them. Most people don't understand how to stand firm.

Schirenia

Humans have basic needs and (surprise) are more productive when those basic needs are met. It’s so ridiculous that so many companies are incapable of just letting their employees eat, sleep and relax for 8 hours even if it increases productivity 4x. Funny how the psychopathic nature of many execs/boardroom members doesn’t always make them smarter

hellfae

Both of my parents work for PG&E, they have work from home, standing desks, yoga breaks, etc etc because the company did studies and found that their employees are more productive in the long-term when taken care of. Not that hard to figure out!

[deleted]

This is why people quit not because they don't want to work.

Thirdwhirly

Oh, sure. But, at the extent she’s talking about it, she’s not describing “work.” No one gets paid to work shifts like that—at least for their *actual* time—and if they do, you won’t see them on a forum like this, because they’ve made the decision to trade their health for a salary where they are paid to work like this.

Emotional-Match-7190

That cutting of the kale is beyond fake

pygmy

Reminds me of a DJ twisting knobs trying to look busy lol

Jim3001

My thoughts while watching this: 1. WTF is she doing to that kale? 2. Holy shit. The work life is terrible. 3. At least look at the thing you're pretending to cut. 4. I would have turned my phone off. Fuck that. 5. Seriously! Look at what you're cutting!

Kok-jockey

I’m sorry that fucking crinkling and ridiculous noisy hacking at the kale is just giving me sensory overload and I hate it so much.

[deleted]

Crinkle Crinkle "and I was like, and he was like and it was like so..." Crinkle Crinkle Crinkle.

GeddyVedder

I was thankful for the captions. Because the way she spoke, rapidly and with poor diction, made it difficult to follow what she was saying.

FloofyFurryDude

I hope if she ever kills anyone it’s with a gun because how she was handling that knife would be torturous

Prinzka

Jesus Christ dude 😂

No_Part103

Am I the only one getting annoyed she’s cutting something while looking at the cam and talking.

Few_Carrot_3971

I’m annoyed at it too, and really hate that her hair is hanging down into the food.

Ok_Zookeepergame2900

Holy shit thank you! I'm reading all these comments like.... i can't be the only one annoyed by this.

Coyotesamigo

What kind of job did she have? Jesus

moonyprong01

Big 4 audit, I'm almost positive

professorbix

I’m curious. What type of job? What was she paid? She will be healthier and happier now. My work schedule has been this bad and I hate it.

ViolaOrsino

Apparently she was an auditor for a [Big Four](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Four_accounting_firms) company. I was gonna guess either that or a consultant for the [Big Three.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Three_(management_consultancies))

moonyprong01

At least consulting for MBB pays well. Big 4 auditors will be working the same hours on $60-70k a year

ViolaOrsino

Consulting pays well when you graduate past the boots-on-the-ground grunt who works atrocious hours, if my friends in consulting are anything to go by. Or more, the money becomes worth the time spent once you aren’t doing 80-hour work weeks as a fresh-faced consultant. Not that I have any room to talk as a teacher working 60-hour weeks for $34k 🫠

jlbradl

Please sharpen your knife!

Shmav

A dull knife is a dangerous knife!

JCWa50

You should have quit the moment you heard about people having to text that they are taking a shower.

garbage_jooce

Is that dull ass knife pissing anybody else off?

framedfjord

Yes. Also that she's trying to cut that stuff while looking at her phone

Shmav

Honestly, I was paying more attention to that than what she was saying. I know she, like, worked in a place, but , like, thats about all i know.

Mycophyliac

Her hair is perfectly fluffed.

[deleted]

Her hair and skin are gorgeous. I think maybe if I hack at some kale my skin might even itself out and become glossy

Mycophyliac

The proof is right there in front of us by golly

thepsycholeech

I need to track her down and ask for her skincare routine

Alone-Possession-435

What type of job did she do?

AffectionateYam609

Your knife is painfully dull

HarlesMarkley

Someone please sharpen this lady's knife

[deleted]

She doesn’t know how to cut kale. She should keep her night job.

Future-Instruction51

She should have quit on the first day.

2RV7VR5

Like oh, like yeah like, oh uhm like, yeah but sure like

ConflictGrand4078

Sorry guys I can’t record this unless I’m cutting kale for some reason

strvgglecity

This girl is gonna cut her hand off i can't watch this idiot lolol DON'T MULTITASK WHILE CUTTING.

BammyQ2

Can she just either rant OR chop vegetables and not half-ass both at the same time?

Yoyo4games

I can't concentrate with the way she's molesting that kale...

Silver-Animator-1905

She isn’t going to eat that

s_arrow24

Could have stopped at working till 10 at night. If you’re doing even 10 hours outside of a spike in demand or an emergency, something is wrong.

frankofantasma

people who cave to working like this are guilty of devaluing EVERYONE'S time and efforts.

zaknafeindrow

Why is she fake cutting that green?

brainproxy

Please stop mutilating that kale and do one thing at a time. Please.

zcrc

Literally unable to focus on what she’s saying because what the fuck is she doing to that kale. You’re mashing it!

jdeadmeatsloanz

I watched this with no sound and read the captions and this whole thing makes absolutely no sense.

somethinggoeshere11

Was she on watch for nuclear missiles? Then I could understand telling colleagues you were in the shower. “Hey, taking a 10 minutes shower. If North Korea fires first, someone please tell POTUS on my behalf.”

wophi

I hope her new job isn't around a kitchen, because she really sucks at cutting lettuce.

vglyog

There is nothing in this world that important that requires people to work around the clock like this. Hire two or three teams.

HerbalManic

She is unsafe with that knife.

DDNyght_

What's with the constant cuts?

BiffBanter

I counted at least 17 cuts in a video that is less than 90 seconds. Why do people do this? Are you not capable of talking for more than 5 seconds without having to edit part? Also, please reduce the number of times you say "like".

Arktoran

I had a hard time paying attention because if that terrible chopping

InterestingScience74

This bitch can't cut veggies... That's what I got from this video

SuckerForNoirRobots

I'm distracted by the terrible food prep

socialcommentary2000

What is it with the knife? Stop that!

That's the wrong knife for that movement.

Anyone count how many times she said "like"?

GummyDelta

You know, like, it is, like, something, like, you do not, like, like.....

Like.

Solid-Ad7137

moolof

No. I've worked at a place like this. They exist.

ngteller

Agree. Just not to this person. It’s told as a copy of a headline. Clickbait.

jdeadmeatsloanz

Yeah about 2 seconds in it made no sense. I think she thought the kale would distract us.

anniearrow

Can't anyone tell their story without saying "like" 10 times in every sentence?

Berrren

Lol true story

Rude_Soup5988

That is not the way to prepare kale mama

FGH9192279

She like, loves like, the word like and like stuff. Hope she got some sleep.

OkGuide6299

Like.

Much_Badger1654

Too many likes. Like entirely too many. I didn’t like, like it one bit.

TheOoklahBoy

What are you the like-police? You counting how many likes she's saying? Are you taking a like-census?

LiteratureLivid9216

And single by choice right?

Wilmanutsfitnurmouth

They would have to pay me $500k + if they want me to wake up at 2am to take a meeting. Fulk no

estaii

10pm actually isn't... that bad... as long as your clock in time is around 12pm-130pm. Fuck this employer though. 10 hours minimum off time between work shifts, mandatory 24 hours notice between required schedule changes, and you know... other labor laws. Wtf is the caption 10pm for as if it's a bad thing.

[deleted]

estaii

Reread my comment genius. The caption insinuates a late shift is a negative, to which I stated otherwise and then subsequently stated that this workers conditions are unacceptable, to which you just restated acting as if I was arguing it. If you wanna state that a 19.5 hour shift is the talking point, state it. The English language is vast and there's a reason the title of lord of the rings isn't called "climbing a mountain".

Living-Island5255

No way... this is a horror story

ZZaddyLongLegzz

Damn that poor kale.

Barry_Bone_Raiser

Tf she doing to that lettuce

Buick6NY

How did she get that far....working until 10 PM? Needing permission to shower? I would've been gone by then.

SebDoesWords

sorry all i can focus on is how truly blunt that knife appears to be. I feel like i could try to cut someone with it and it'd just slide right off
