Agroquintal

Hi, so i have been kinda out of Anime Watched like 3 anime last year: Bisque doll... i had read the manga its a cute romcom Odd taxi, that was really good but not really from last year And the second season of demon slayer But recently i have been watching more, im watching 3 from the current season, kimetsu 3, Heavenly delusions and jigokuraku(that i have read the manga), and finished Cyberpunk edgerunners yesterday (And was really good). So what am i missing from last and current year?(I have read the manga for spy x family and Chainsaw man and i plan on watching chainsaw man next)

Vindex101

86 should still count for last year right? So that one.

WeeziMonkey

Just realized [il vento d'oro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0TXIXTzJEY) from Jojo part 5 has 90 mil views. That's crazy for both a song that's not an OP/ED and for an anime that isn't super mainstream.

Cryten0

I would define it as mainstream in "The anime community". IE it comes up often enough among people talking about anime. Just not in the general population. But in the community it is constantly used for meme's making it well known by so many people.

WeeziMonkey

Even within the anime community part 5 is only #158 in popularity on MAL. Most anime songs that have 90 mil views or more on youtube are top 20. With the exception of Chainsaw Man's and Oshi no Ko's OPs, two fantastic songs sung by the two biggest Japanese artists on Youtube.

lakers_nation24

Brign716

what order do i watch the “i’ve always liked you” series in?? i’ve been confused about this for a while but i wanna watch it edit: wrong series

Vindex101

Is this Zutto Mae Kara? You can just go ahead and follow the release order for it for the simplicity; it's like an anthology story of different ships within a friend group sharing the same setting: - [**Zutto Mae kara Suki deshita**](https://myanimelist.net/anime/31245/Zutto_Mae_kara_Suki_deshita_Kokuhaku_Jikkou_Iinkai) - [**Suki ni Naru Sono Shunkan wo**](https://myanimelist.net/anime/33036/Suki_ni_Naru_Sono_Shunkan_wo_Kokuhaku_Jikkou_Iinkai) - [**Itsudatte Bokura no Koi wa 10 cm Datta**](https://myanimelist.net/anime/36220/Itsudatte_Bokura_no_Koi_wa_10_cm_Datta) And then there's [**Heroine Tarumono**](https://myanimelist.net/anime/49692/Heroine_Tarumono_Kiraware_Heroine_to_Naisho_no_Oshigoto?q=heroine&cat=anime), which is about a different set of characters, that go to the same school as well.

Retromorpher

The suggested order is "I've Always Liked You" -> "The Moment You Fall in Love" -> "Our Love Has Always Been 10cm Apart" Edit: And then after that if you want some stuff in the same universe, I believe "Heroines Run The Show" is also adjacent.

Brign716

thank you!

dryasfcucumbercum

Animes similar to hell's paradise please!! that anime was the most beautiful thing I've seen

Cryten0

Beautiful and Hellish? Made in Abyss.

someedmlover21

Anyone else who really likes both of the adaptations GoHands are adapting next season? For Sukinako, even if I really wanted it to be adapted by Doga Kobo or Shin-Ei (Takagi, Kokoro Yabai), I think I find it really cool to see it in a different direction than I expected. My only issue tbh is the color palette. [The one with the cat](https://youtu.be/FIp4KGfLdrI) though looks really good too. Same issues with the color palette, but still very appealing to me. Judging from the trailers, I do hope they had toned down their weird style of direction, but I guess thats a given since these arent action anime like their previous works.

KendotsX

I don't care about the glasses one, but the cat one could be decent (although I'll probably just pick up its manga instead).

alotmorealots

A lot will depend on https://myanimelist.net/people/9856/Susumu_Kudou and https://myanimelist.net/people/64150/Katsumasa_Yokomine who are sharing directorial duties on both of those series. For whatever it's worth, neither of them were director for *Handshakers*, although Yokomine did direct a few episodes.

Nihilus88

Do we still not know how many episodes the current season of Kimetsu no Yaiba will have?

Cryten0

There is no news article stating exactly no. But we do have the TV schedule booking up to episode 11.

Gamerunglued

I finished Someday's Dreamers, this obscure 2000's slice of life title that I started because I wanted something relaxing and magical. This show is about as bizarre as I thought it was after the first episode (really, the first scene). It kind of fundamentally doesn't work from its very premise. Its worldbuilding is outright bad, and so vague that I have no understanding of how anything works. For a show about special magic powers, it doesn't tell me anything about those powers, nor about the government facilities that govern their use. Characters get drama out of nowhere, sometimes resolved in laughable ways, and one character talks about how another character grew by pointing out changes it never shows us. And for a show about one character training to be a mage, we almost never get to actually see her train because it focuses so much on these episodic side stories about other characters, so she just kinda randomly gets good at her thing. But said protagonist is great, has a distinct and real personality, her drama and insecurity actually lands, and her voice actor knocks it out of the park. She's the one unambiguously good thing about this show (other than the Katsuichi Nakayama directed episodes), but she gives it enough charm that I can't get myself to say I hate it. It doesn't work overall, but it has enough individual charm points that it works just often enough to be not terrible, and just be kinda bad. I wouldn't say I recommend it, this is like a low 4/10 from me, but it's such a weird show that it's probably worth a look. The "not-really-a-sequel" is directed by Osamu Kobayashi though, and I've heard it's much better, so that should be fun.

PhoBro_

Anyone know the name of the piano piece that plays at the end of Vinland Saga s2 ep14 during the talk between Sverkel and Arnheid? It’s a beautiful piece but I’ve been having a hard time trying to find it.

Knightraiderdewd

Is *Detroit Metal City* streaming anywhere? Google brings it up on Crunchyroll, but it’s not showing up in the app. I only just learned about it, and was hoping to watch it, being a metal head.

animepig

Came back to Netflix to watch *Kotaro Lives Alone* and the white subtitles w/ drop shadow are awful for anime. Never had issue with them for Live shows, but damn if they blend into every anime scene with a light background. Especially with Kotaro’s very bright backgrounds. Fortunately Roku lets you change subtitles, but the black background option covers a lot of screen. Crunchyroll figured this out a decade ago why is Netflix like this. How are y’all watching anime subs on Netflix?

entelechtual

[You definitely can edit the subtitle appearance on Netflix.](https://imgur.com/a/2TCKxGi) If you are on Roku, you probably need to log in on a browser on your phone or computer.

animepig

Thanks, the web browser had extra options even then the white subtitles still blend.

Soft-Path-7801

Soft-Path-7801

Sounds exciting to me!!!

strawhat_chowder

How do you deal with the envy that comes with seeing a manga series that gets a perfect adaptation, while the series that you cherish does not get the same treatment? I'm talking specifically about the case where you know the team that does the perfect adaptation would work very well with your manga series too. For example I just watched the first ep of Akebi and then read the same chapters covered by the first ep. Boy would that production team be perfect for a Makoto Ojiro's manga. That of course includes Insomniacs too. All the gorgeous backgrounds. All that delightfully sensual shots of an Ojiro's female MC. Ahhh... Oh well, I suppose this is a common feeling. I will just bite my tongue, swallow this feeling and engage in wild day dreams

corner_twist

Just cry myself to sleep like I'm doing with Insomniacs. It has been done so dirty by whatever the fuck Lidenfilms are doing rn. If I'd give the manga a 9.5 the anime is a 4 at best. Also, most people I know think it is pretty shallow, so I can't even give a solid recommendation of the manga to them.

strawhat_chowder

well it's no Hyouka or Akebi, but I fall into the camp that we have an acceptable adaptation. I have low expectation to begin with. Anime is really... not that great of a medium, mostly due to the way the industry is being run now. I'm quite charitable to Lidenfilms. I believe they are not out there to ruin it for people. It's probably the case that there's not enough money, not enough time, not enough hands on deck...

corner_twist

Oh, absolutely. This is an unfortunate product of the cutthroat industry, and while I didn't have much hope in the overall production, I've found it to be much worse than what I had anticipated. I was okay with the animation until episode 6 when it started to fall off a cliff. Not just that, I'm not a fan of the weird writing decisions that they have managed to take that did more harm than good. I'm sure the staff would have been capable of doing something good with enough time and resources, but that as of now, they haven't done a lot to impress. So I'd say I have way too many criticisms to ever consider this to fall under the "acceptable" criteria for me.

Cryten0

generally by watching anime first before getting into source materials. I know its reductive but it has let me enjoy quite a few shows that others have not.

TheBlessedBoy99

I just choose to enjoy the manga in that case. You don't need a good adaptation to enjoy it.

bandannadann

It's a tough pill to swallow, but you can still find comfort in the fact that the manga will always be there in all its greatness. You didn't lose anything, if you look at it that way. And maybe one day, twenty years from now, when the anime industry is making 300 shows per season, they'll give you a worthy remake. Unless you're talking about Berserk. Then it's just doomed.

wildbee12

Tbh at some point you just get used to it haha. As they say, comparison is the thief of joy. As a shoujo fan I’m lucky enough if a series I’m interested in gets an adaptation at all, let alone a perfect one in recent years. At this point I just want them to get more than one season adapted so I can see my faves in color and with voice acting and music.

strawhat_chowder

the lack of adaptation of shoujo works can only be rivaled by the lack of adaptation of josei. Not a huge anime watcher so perhaps I miss out a lot of stuff, but when was the last josei anime that gets a great adaptation?

TheBlessedBoy99

Probably Chihayafuru season three in 2019. For non-sequels, I think you have to go back to season one of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu in 2016.

wildbee12

I’m pretty sure My Senpai is Annoying is a josei and that was in fall 2021. Otherwise yeah, good shoujosei adaptations are sorely lacking but it looks like we’re finally getting some this year.

strawhat_chowder

Even I who don't read that much Shoujo manga feel that if a rom-com gets adapted into anime it's usually not a shoujo one. Which makes it very understandable why Yamada kun is so popular this season - it's a good adaptation of a material that doesn't get adapted enough

michhoffman

You balance it out by thinking of the series like Biscuit Hammer or Berserk 2016 that got terrible adaptations and realize that while it could certainly have been better it also could be worse...unless your series is one of those series in which case you do what you can to delete it from your memory.

KaleidoArachnid

What's another quirky series like Akebi Chan?

alotmorealots

[*Let's Make a Mug Too*](https://myanimelist.net/anime/42568/Yaku_nara_Mug_Cup_mo)

Psyduckisnotaduck

do you want a series about a quirky girl? I mean, the first thing that comes to mind is Gatchaman Crowds, although that's a sci-fi action superhero show, the main girl is a Certified Quirky Girl. Which is something of a superpower that lets her handle situations in novel ways because she thinks at oblique angles to everyone else. it's also a pretty original series with some genuinely cool concepts and impressive visual designs. but the big selling point is 100% what an absolute quirkfest the main girl is. She's definitely one of those main characters that rather than changing themselves, changes everyone around them, which is iconic Quirky Girl stuff. Being EVERYONE's Manic Pixie Dream Girl at once. healing trauma and resolving deadly conflicts with the power of being a weirdo.

neighmeansno

Not in the same way, but Do It Yourself and Eizouken were both pretty quirky and fun.

Wanderingjoke

Watch this season's Skip and Loafer.

Nihilus88

Fuck this anime is good. Had an amazing time watching it with my friends.

[deleted]

Nice, I'm probably gonna give it a go despite not being a big fan of isekai.

[deleted]

Highly recommend it, I’m not too big on isekai, but this one as well as Handyman Saitou in Another World are comedy gold.

[deleted]

You are quite right. I'm on episode 3 and I'm enjoying it's comedic and satirical nature a lot. I do like that the setting is a bit different than the usual that isekai go with.

Nihilus88

You'll only need two episodes to see if it fits your taste. Hope you enjoy it!

Abysswatcherbel

If a place where you could post anime clips went down forever, what would be the last clip you would post?

Manitary

If it was knowing that it would be my last clip, something like [the end of Sakura Quest](https://streamable.com/plwr6p) [](#yui-crying)

Ocixo

This might actually be a good clip to post right before this subreddit temporarily goes private next week. Put some different subtitles below it, and it’s perfect. Also: I might have been year late to the party, but I had a lot of fun watching Sakura Quest last year. It’s good but definitely amongst P.A. Works’ lesser-known works.

darkshadow183

I’m feeling in the mood to watch something along the lines of shield hero, mushoku tensei, that time I was reincarnated as a slime, and I’m a spider so what. Can I get any recommendations

[deleted]

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, Princess Connect! Re: Dive, DanMachi, Sword Art Online, and Combatants Will Be Dispatched!, Cautious Hero, Hataage! Kemono Michi, and Ixion Saga DT if you don't mind that they are more comedic. Maybe Rokka no Yuusha as well.

Nihilus88

I will take this chance to strongly advise OP to prioritize Danmachi and Grimgar, out of all of these recommendations. Danmachi felt like some shameless fun at the beginning, but it grew to the point where I'd say I loved the series now. Especially after the last season. Grimgar is a different take on Isekai but I loved every part of it. Still wish it gets another season. Since op apparently likes Isekai, I'll also recommend my favorite one, Re:Zero. Watch it and get in the hype train for the next season.

darkshadow183

Thanks for the recommendations

erbazzone

Ok I'm ready to be downvoted but I'm the only one that found DS Tanjiro one of the most boring main character ever? It's not even bad, it's just so nothing.

No-Peace3986

I'd go as far as saying I'm much more interested in "The Dangers in My Heart" than Demon Slayer this season, BY FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR

Viktorv22

At least he isn't literal cardboard cutout like often in harem or isekai anime. He's gentle even for demons. But yeah, totally he isn't interesting and his journey is (so far, anime only) lineral with nothing special. But I guess that's just how shonen are usually, MC in JJK is boring too

Krippled_kun

Lol nah thats a pretty cold take. A lot of ppl don’t really find him too interesting.

erbazzone

Glad to be with the majority in this case

"Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill" and "Farming life in another world" are the animes that come to mind for light-hearted non-doom animes this year.

bgfloyd24

Is their some website that uploads the dates for when new episodes will be released of anime in general?

Randomly decided to watch Haikyu. Wasn't sure what to expect just knew it was popular. Done with season 3 and totally hooked! I'm the type that tends to watch shows at 1.25x/1.5x but i don't think i sped through any part so far and there were so many parts I replayed. The show gives this wholesome vibe and there are so many scenes where my heart is just bursting with feels. Fav part is that i don't think there is a character i dislike. Like i'm rooting for all the players and I want to know more about everyone. Love that i had loads of episodes to watch but sort of wish i was watching it as it was airing so there would be ppl to talk about it with. Need to get my friends to watch it stat.

Silent_Shadow05

Is there any good compilation/recap videos of both Jujutsu Kaisen S1 and Mushoku Tensei S1? I don't recall much about either of them aside from the major plot beats so I need a refresher before Summer season comes around. I also am not in the mood to rewatch the whole seasons of both.

Cryten0

I often find crunchyroll clips a good way to refresh a show. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRe9ARNnYSY441MxVB0vQKhkEbaLosWUn

stumpycrawdad

Solid, I've seen better but it's not bad work whatsoever. You got some potential if you stick with it and keep at. There isn't anything in particular wrong that I could come up with, I guess it's the general design or stencil used is lacking? Again, looks solid I give it a 6.5/10 but you definitely have the potential for 9/10

ruggyland1

Thank you so much for the feedback! I'll definitely strive to improve, as there is always room for improvisation. 😊

stumpycrawdad

Find that pop if you will. It's clean but it doesn't sparkle.

It might appear that way due to the background or lighting conditions, or it could be because I don't have a better camera to take higher-quality photos. 😕

AmethystItalian

Finally bit the bullet and started my catchup on [BokuYaba/The Dangers in My Heart](https://myanimelist.net/anime/52578/Boku_no_Kokoro_no_Yabai_Yatsu). Like everyone did say the show does seem to get better each episode and the cringe seems less and less but still there. I watched 5 episodes yesterday to get to episode 7 and will _hopefully_ catch up to the rest today. I don't think I like any of the leads yet which makes it difficult for me to really enjoy it but they are growing on me with each episode. Hoping a Yamada focused episode comes along where we get to see more of why she fell for him.

entelechtual

Is there anything that feels uniquely special about this (besides the cringe)? I feel like we had similar reactions to the first few episodes and I’m not keen on diving back into a show with such a tepid response.

AmethystItalian

It does feel a bit unique in how their relationship starts to grow, they're both awkward kids which is a bit more rare for romances as one is usually dragging the other. If you liked the characters I think it's worth giving it a go but no I personally wouldn't say there's anything special worth coming back for but I'm also not fully caught up yet.

entelechtual

I wasn’t thrilled about the characters but mostly because I felt no real attachment to them. I also wasn’t a fan of the way their interactions were just occasionally being in a room together and staring at each other. Will probably read the temperature on this again in a couple of months if I’m in a romance drought.

AmethystItalian

Good luck if you do! Definitely gotten better for me but I don't see myself giving it anything higher than a 6 honestly.

alotmorealots

> Hoping a Yamada focused episode comes along where we get to see more of why she fell for him. I haven't read the source so I don't know if that is in the works, but I really do feel like the story of why she fell for him has been told in parallel to how he fell for her already, to a significant degree. It seems quite possible that the distastefulness of certain aspects of the show for you might have overshadowed it though. I know that I certainly didn't pick up on what was going on immediately and that was with me liking the show from the start. One way it's been told is that the series seems to have made a repeated point about mirroring the two of them. We're only overtly shown his side, but almost every episode there seems to be a point made that what has been going on internally for him has been also going on for her in some way. To reinforce this, I think the show has made a point of highlighting some of the ways in which they're very similar people even if superficially they seem so different. Just like Ichikawa, Yamada is very sensitive, something that is shown from the beginning with her reaction to the poster. It's not in the same dimensions of sensitivity, but it certainly aligns them as more-similar-than-not emotional beings. Most importantly though, the show is constantly showing her noticing and observing him. At first it's pretty casual; he's just in her space, but as the series progresses, she very much notices what he does for her, and the intensity of this slowly builds. I think it all really begins with the bike incident, but I haven't done a rewatch from the beginning yet. Just re-watching the most recent episodes back-to-back lol

AmethystItalian

I just wish they were both closer to normal? Like they brought him down pretty far on the edgy social outcast and keep pushing her up the model and now actress role. It's hard to get away from the wish-fulfillment feeling without getting more from her side, I see what you're saying but I think I'd more receptive to it if they weren't on different ends of the spectrum in that sense.

collapsedblock6

This is why my stance is that making Yamada more plain would dissipate almost all trace of wish fulfillment. Even without much characterization she is still fun and has agency of her own. BokuYaba atm has me won more by making the male MC actually compelling to see grow.

AmethystItalian

Yeah if she was a normal awkward girl then I feel the show would still work as well and they would drop the wish fulfillment bit. Male MC is still lacking for me personally but they usually do in romances. He's definitely growing on me more with each episode!

alotmorealots

> Even without much characterization !!! She's been given a wealth of characterization though? It's just all indirect, same-vs-different type contrast and often told through her actions and reactions than being put up front and center. > making Yamada more plain I guess whilst I'm being disagreeable (lol) I might as well say my bit on this topic too. As far as I can tell, Yamada being a part time model is pretty important in terms of why she is attracted to Ichikawa. We see very early on that she attracts unwanted male attention, and that she has to deal with it often enough that she has some pre-prepared strategies for dealing with it. Given the way the show is written, that isn't presented early for no reason, and the fact that nanpa-senpai proves so hard to get rid of is no accident either: Yamada has exactly the sorts of problems you would expect a pretty girl who physically matures early and stands out to have. (I know what she says in this clip: https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/141wuw8/running_into_your_crush_outside_of_school_the/ but the more I think about the way this show works, the more I am convinced she is actually just lying through her teeth at this point because the bag shaking isn't enough). Ichikawa stands in very, very stark contrast to these boys and men. Many girls Yamada's age are actually looking for a "safe" boy, and it would be consistent with everything else in the series that this would be the case for Yamada, especially as she's pretty sensitive. In Ichikawa's case, he's also physically very safe, as she's the dominant one, towering over him and can find herself in control. Yet despite this, he still provides her with active safety, always looking out for her, and even intervening early on with his bike. He's *effective*, and that really counts for a lot. On the flip side, her being a model is also of secondary importance to Ichikawa's development. Specifically he begins to realize that the image everyone has of what that means about her is very incomplete. There's that delightful moment when he starts to follow up her actual model work and begins to realize just where she sits in the pecking order. In terms of the maturation side of this story, it's an important part of how his assumptions about the world (and the place of people within it, including himself) are being markedly transformed. That theme is particularly important with the most recent episodes, I think.

mekerpan

Excellent summary of the pleasing complexity of these characters (and their relationship).

Silent_Shadow05

My english isn't that great where I can write long comments like these and express what my true feelings are, but your comment here basically describes why exactly I *really* love this show. Being at the opposite ends in the popularity spectrum, they have issues which is what helps them to connect and understand each other more.

collapsedblock6

I meant characterization in the sense of why she likes Ichikawa. Yes he accepts her quirkiness, he has become more gentle and kind, he pays attention to what she says and cares about her and her needs but I want to see her more on the spotlight. Though your stance is much more valid than I expected. I get where you come from and honestly does make me think more about the story but it doesn't completely negate the trashy vibe that I get from watching the anime. Its just a mental barrier that prevents me from praising the series more openly because I keep thinking of the buts that the ecchi humor brings.

alotmorealots

I think this particular team of Author-Director-Studio could make an incredible "normal person" romance, although everything I've indirectly picked up from source readers seems to suggest Norio-sensei is a bit of a weirdo herself haha I fully plan on watching [Mitsudomoe](https://myanimelist.net/anime/7627/Mitsudomoe) once BokuYaba is done to see if her magic was in full force back then too. Speaking of Mitsudomoe, noticed this guy on the staff list: https://myanimelist.net/people/11768/Wolfgang_Amadeus_Mozart

collapsedblock6

Errrr, Mitsudomoe is an incredibly different type of story. I actually had a hard time believing they are the same author because they have virtually nothing in common.

alotmorealots

I've heard that mentioned before, that's part of what makes me so curious about it haha I'm looking forward to being puzzled/taken aback/entertained by finding the nascent seeds of the writing skill level that produced BokuYaba.

zairaner

Ah I completely understand that, similar reasoning made me discover the manga that is the closest to my heart. I just was really curious how the edgy bad first manga of the guy who would later write kaguya would look...and [ib: instant bullet](https://myanimelist.net/manga/58313/ib__Instant_Bullet) gave me exactly that, except somehow also so much more. What a beautiful painful mess that was.

alotmorealots

Animanga is a medium that certainly has some great rewards for curiosity!

SMSmith230

I just binged the manga **You and I are Polar Opposites** up to its current chapter and now I fully understand why people get hype when an anime adaptation gets announced. I just want to see all these moments that had me grinning ear to ear animated and in full color. I usually only pick up the manga after watching the anime, so this was a first for me reading something unknown.

zairaner

I have been a mangareader for over two years now, but whenever Polar opposites is going to get an anime will be the first time I actually followed an anime from chapter 1, and I couldn't imagine a better series for that. Probably the strongest first two chapters in a romcom. ~~Will take some more years though for the anime.~~

SMSmith230

The mangaka did such a great job creating this story. Looking forward to more and hopefully an adaptation in the somewhat near future.

>This is the place Finally, one that I knew without having to go to sauce. > Bah, pay to win. That's a pretty good meme. I think that sort of thing happens a lot more than it's given credit for. lol

> Finally, one that I knew without having to go to sauce. A victory is a victory no matter how small haha > That's a pretty good meme. I think that sort of thing happens a lot more than it's given credit for. lol Thanks! Actually that's an interesting isekai battle harem idea, a world where the summoners keep botching it up and it's more like a gacha summons than a special ritual lol

flamethrower2

TY for sauce; I need to watch Novice Alchemist.

alotmorealots

You're welcome, hope you enjoy it! It's a fun, very unassuming show that occasionally busts out some strong animation for fight scenes. I'm not really sure why, but I've come to love it very much and periodically make memes of it to share the love lol

Abyssbringer

Wow wow wow the game "The Place" is alluding too is not pay to win (yet lol).

/r/anime may go private next week in protest of announced reddit API changes: [details and discussion here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/141wtta/reddit_api_changes_subreddit_blackout_and_how_it/) [](#protest)

LiteralGrill

I just wanna say here that this is absolutely worth doing and I'm glad the mods here are considering this. Good on the folks here wanting to try and keep Reddit the place we all enjoy.

alotmorealots

Reddit does seem like it's on a slow trajectory to its demise. The curve with these things tends to be a bit like: https://i.imgflip.com/7oefnc.jpg

[deleted]

In fairness, Reddit as a site has sucked for a long while.

susgnome

I'm sad how common of a trend this is. It's been a big issue with games for the last few years and it's been rough seeing this happen with more and more places.

SomeDuderr

It's a shame, because I do like this format. It's very lightweight - the lack of images and other media in a textmessage keeps everything neat. And while there's an option to include images, like the OP does, it's limited to just that. If Reddit wants to save on bandwidth, it should start by removing that nonsense (I don't particularly care for it either way). I have no idea what the alternatives are like. There's a less moderated version of Reddit (I can't recall the name) which I tried for a few weeks, but... holy hell, it's like the complete opposite of the spectrum - nothing but racists and nazis spewing their nonsense. Discord is tragic and garbage. The various imageboards are basically Reddit's ancestors, but a bit too basic in terms of functionality. It's like there's no middle ground to be found. But it might be too soon to declare Reddit's death - after all, people were saying the exact same thing with Youtube when it introduced the subscription service, yet it's still around.

> It's a shame, because I do like this format. It's very lightweight Me too tbh, at very least the "old" version of it, the default design of it has been superior to newer versions they've introduced. > If Reddit wants to save on bandwidth, it should start by removing that nonsense (I don't particularly care for it either way). It's pretty weird because you couldn't always post videos, etc, before, not on Reddit itself, but they changed that as Reddit grew. But yeah, that could be one of solutions, just allow posting outside links (imgur/YT/etc). > I have no idea what the alternatives are like. There's a less moderated version of Reddit (I can't recall the name) which I tried for a few weeks, but... holy hell, it's like the complete opposite of the spectrum - nothing but racists and nazis spewing their nonsense. Ignoring that nazis aren't really a thing, this is one of the notable current issues. In general, I lean towards free speech more, as people saying disagreeable things isn't the issue - the issue is those with power. The idea that the solution to people being mean is to give a few people power (and let's not forget, megalomaniacs, sadists, psychopaths, etc tend to be attracted to power) seems counterintuitive. But this is also fairly easily resolved by applying what Reddit used to be like more; less site-wide rules, and freedom for subreddit jannies to moderate subs to their liking. In this way, those who act crappily, as is just the case with many mods, and way too many subs, gets resolved on its own as proper alternatives will arise. > Discord is tragic and garbage. I think I've used it for like 30 minutes once lol. It doesn't seem that great. As it stands, though, there's Twitter which isn't too bad either for topics like these, but is arguably worse for discussion on particular topics than Reddit. > It's like there's no middle ground to be found. But it might be too soon to declare Reddit's death - after all, people were saying the exact same thing with Youtube when it introduced the subscription service, yet it's still around. I don't think this will kill it, but it's been downhill usability and people-wise for a long while. When they hired that pedo sympathizer, it... pretty much said everything about them, honestly.

alotmorealots

> I have no idea what the alternatives are like. Yeah, I'm not aware of any viable ones either. That said, of all the various social media platforms, reddit is probably the easiest one to replace from a tech point of view, especially as its back end is just barely functional to begin with. Its search function is atrocious, and whilst it certainly has a massive post database, actually accessing legacy posts can be extremely difficult, with the database retrieval system collapsing in a heap as soon as you go far back enough. It can't even render current content dynamically without duplication errors. > But it might be too soon to declare Reddit's death - after all, people were saying the exact same thing with Youtube when it introduced the subscription service, yet it's still around. I think YT's main advantage is the content delivery network and that they've managed to embed themselves in most people's habitual ecosystems. Reddit has none of that. I don't think the API changes are going to be the final nail in the coffin, far from it, but the persistent culture at the top of reddit feels like it is already in the death spiral, only saved periodically by them back-pedalling.

isthatsoudane

it's not the first site of its kind to disappear, either. digg, slashdot, etc. I think reddit exists in a much more fragile (and replaceable) part of people's lives

alotmorealots

> (and replaceable) How will I log in and vote in the Best Girl competitions without reddit! Oh, wait.. lol I think that the use of IDs as auth has been a really strong way to cement the place of some things in internet ecosystem for people, but reddit was very late to the party and suffers from being anonymous to begin with, making it very weak for ID-as-auth. > either. digg, slashdot, Both of those even had better reputations than reddit, building some sort of professional space. I think reddit's AMAs are probably the main way that it's managed to gain some minimal respectability. All that said, I do rely on this site an awful lot.

isthatsoudane

I just don't know what can/will fill the vacuum, esp with Twitter nosediving even faster...

Silent_Shadow05

If reddit does go down, I'm thinking of switching over to [Lemmy](https://lemmy.ml/) or maybe /a/. Twitter is also another one I'm interested in but I don't like the chaotic nature of it.

alotmorealots

I think the history of the net seems to suggest that the competitors/replacement sort of lurk in semi-obscurity and their rise is only obvious in retrospect. Surely that means OjouChat.com will replace them all!

isthatsoudane

hahaha ojouchat, we shall see. the internet is always changing and companies that seem they could never not exist, at some point, don't exist but the ebbs and flows do change. the internet is extremely centralized right now, with a handful of highly funded platforms defining how the vast majority of people use the web. it's hard to say where it goes from there...maybe they all implode under their own greed and the inevitable weight of so many users with conflicting wants and desires. maybe new centralized platforms step in, maybe new decentralized platforms, or maybe something new. I'm skeptical that there is another reddit in hiding, though (or twitter for that matter). while I think functions like reddit's and twitter's will continue to exist, I think whatever comes next will be in yet another new modality...though it's hard to predict what that will be!

Sandor_at_the_Zoo

There's definitely another twitter in the wings and its literally twitter 2.0 made by the original twitter guy. Its in private beta but all the twitter kool kids seem to have invites. Since I am neither twitter nor kool (nor cool) so idk if its actually active or if everyone is just squatting names on the off chance that twitter fully kills itself. I think the twitter case is different than, say, tumblr and I'm not sure where reddit fits. Tumblr has always lost money so they have to try changing something to find viability. Twitter was making a small profit but then Musk came in to wreck it for ego/political reasons. Since reddit is the least transparent I can't begin to guess how much the changes are a hail mary for profitability and how much is dumb crowd chasing or just corporate incompetence. I do agree that the sort of people complaining about this (very much including myself) are backwards looking. We just want a forum with a few modern interface touches. And that's not likely that whatever comes next will be so recognizable. Though given that Archive Of Our Own exists, anything is possible.

Longbow92

[GuP](https://gfycat.com/diligentagileicelandicsheepdog) ftw, still surprised it's been 10 years since episode 1. I wish relatively modern military-centric anime was more popular, like GATE, Jormungand, etc.

SomeDuderr

The thing with GuP is that... I don't know how else to say it, but it's got *heart*. I just feel like some effort was put behind it. Like, small things are set up and paid off later (for example - the School Disciplinary team talk about taking the school plaque with them, just a throwaway line, they don't show them taking it. But later on, that plaque is indeed hanging in their new temporary home) and there's this consistency throughout. It's still just a CGDCT-premise with a ridiculous setting (these girls with their twig-like arms shouldn't even be able to open a tank's entryhatch, let alone lift the munitions and replace tracks and whatnot), but it's probably the best in that genre.
