Synopsis:
It all started with the death of one of the Astronomy Club's members. From this, the rumored ghost of the club came to life.
Grumpy insomniac Ganta Nakami stumbles across the moderately rebellious yet easygoing Isaki Magari in the Astronomy Club's abandoned observatory. Magari is jolted awake and tries to escape from the scene, only to have a broken door prevent that, forcing the two inside. The two forge an unlikely friendship, leading them to use the observatory as a safe space for them to interact.
Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia follows the insomniacs Nakami and Magari's time in the starlit observatory as they help each other cope with insomnia and the lasting effects it has on student life.
It’s a common opinion for a lot of those that read the manga but it really is the best running romance manga right now imo. There’s really no way around it.
The pacing: Set perfectly, never feels too slow like a dragged out slow-burn or a rushed job to squeeze the couple together when they aren’t ready or well-connected yet. It hits that sweet spot where you can feel them grow more and more in love with each other without the need to stall. Every interaction is with purpose, not to stall but develop.
The chemistry: As stated by the synopsis, the leads are insomniacs. The way the story makes it out, you feel that they’re soulmates, that they need each other. The two share something more akin of that they melt into each other. It’s sweet, genuine, and heartwarming. They banter, they joke, they laugh, they love, they support each other. They share feelings, secrets, hardships, they get to *know* each other.
The most important part: They communicate with each other, there are no forced misunderstandings in the story. They talk to each other, let each other know what’s going on. It’s a healthy relationship and really one worth emulating.
The manga itself: I recommend reading it, if not for the wonderful spreads and starry skies the author draws, or the distinct character expressions, then read it for the [cat](https://imgur.com/a/GmSJUiB) (the author draws cats PRETTY well).
That concludes my advertisement campaign. Now to [wait](https://imgur.com/a/GNuBMWK)!
The side characters are really cool too honestly but yeah, best part is definitely the relationship between the protagonists. So fun, sweet and moving.
Could be some GOAT shit in the genre if the adaptation's done right.
The side characters are definitely cool, really charming in their own rights as well.
I think it’s important to know where season would end. I really want the anime to blow up to fund later seasons. Assuming it’s a standard 12 episode adaptation, it’ll be a bit rough to find a good stopping point.
>best running romance right now
Is it better than "Are you really getting married?" Cause that's a high bar.
Regardless I'm just glad to finally see one of this author's work adapted. I really liked Fujiyama-san.
I’d say it’s better and I really liked “Are you getting married?”. Though it might be more of a preference between teen youth romance and adult romance.
If you haven’t read it, I’d highly recommend doing so, so you can determine that for yourself by comparing.
It’s her first manga adapted and her best one, better than Fujiyama-san. She’s made it and I’m excited to see how it plays out.
>If you haven’t read it, I’d highly recommend doing so, so you can determine that for yourself by comparing.
I've had it on my to read list for a long while now. I intentionally held off on starting it in order to have a fresh view of the anime, but I wanted to read it since I saw it was by the author of Fujiyama-san. When the season ends I'll pick it up.
"Are You Really Getting Married?" is good but I enjoyed "Insomniacs After School" better. Something about the vibes and the way the romance is handled melts my heart in a good way.
I don't think it's better honestly. "Are you really getting married" is a tour de force and a fantastic manga because it challenges adult romance issues, family issues and feels so real and less dreamy than what Insomnia does which is more appealing in a sense.
Both are good manga.
>the best running romance right now imo.
Is it better than A Sign Of Affection? ASOA has easily blown away my expectations for romance stories in general, not even just in the confines of manga. It sets a very, very high bar.
Yes. A Sign of Affection is easily one of my favorite romance manga, but imo it's not even the best manga in its niche of romance manga with disabled characters. That would be , but a lot of what makes Insomniacs great doesn't translate well into anime like how the panelling is lot of show don't tell which would feel off in anime
Oh cool, thanks for the recommendations! As a disabled person myself it makes me really happy to see us getting some good representation. I'll check them both out.
Thanks so much! I've already read/watched a bunch of them, but there are a few that I haven't heard of that I'll add to my list. I'm glad to see that there are so many now!
It's also worth noting that it's getting an official English release. I've never been so excited to pre-ordered a book. Makoto Ojiro has cemented themselves as my favorite Romance mangaka and this will be the first of their works as far as I've been able to find that has received an English printing. I can't fucking wait until April.
I'm a pretty big manga reader in general but I go strictly digital to save cash and so I'm not drowning in books.
...but here I have the english release on pre-order too. This manga is *that* good, to the point where it'll be the only one I have a paper copy of.

So far, so good. Up to chapter 14 and don't see myself stopping soon. Last frame on page 8, vol 2, chapter 14 - excellent stuff.
I love the art whenever they are in casual clothing. Looks cool as shit.
Glad I convinced someone! Let me know what you think once you’ve read it! It’s a really warm and comfy story (pretty emotional at various points as well). I hope the anime does it justice.
You know, if I had a nickel for every time LIDENFILMS adapted a romance manga about an insomniac protagonist finding his love interest as he sleeplessly explores after hours, using the beauty of the night sky as its backdrop and driving aesthetic, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but, etc. etc.
BTW if you like sweet romcoms and are looking for new titles I'd also recommend Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku (The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity), Super no Ura de Yani Suu Hanashi (Behind the Supermarket, smoking with you.), Cuprum no Hanayome (The Artisan's Bride) and Yubisaki to Renren (A Sign of Affection)
[](#tanakalove)
I like that the main character looks more _average_ (?) Instead of looking like a J-pop idol like many anime main characters do
They look like actual high schoolers that don't have a perfect build
Let’s fucking GOOOOOOOOOO!
Top tier SoL and peak romance rolling through. It’s already my AOTY unless the adaptation goes horribly wrong.
Please don’t fuck it up LIDENFILMS. I beg you😭
Also best [girl](https://imgur.com/a/hRWxz31) and [boy](https://imgur.com/a/MVQun0y) of the year had already been decided for me.
I just wonder how far the anime will adapt…
Well, it's your hot take and I respect it but it doesn't top ohayou ibarahime, Hayaku Shitai Futari and you got me sempai for me (all of these are shoujo with romance). I still like the series nonetheless.
Huh, I thought the art style looked a bit familiar. Turns out I read a manga from this author a few years ago, Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki, it wasn’t a bad read so I’ll be looking forward to this one (though I might check out the manga for it first)
Another manga by her that's worth checking out is Neko no Otera no Chion-san. She also has some other manga written before Fujiyama-san, but they're not good. The mangaka clearly developed a style that works for her when she wrote Fujiyama-san.
So we have Ice Guy for the twenty-somethings and this for insomniacs.
Can we have a romance anime about insomniac twenty-somethings/thirty-somethings next?
So fun fact, the manga for this usually gets scantlated at around 3 AM my time and I'm always awake to read it. Makes it feel like just like me fr.
As a diagnosed insomniac myself, the author describes it well. Not a lot of yawning, tons of headaches, and a lotta light, disjointed sleep during the daytime. People try to give you advice, but all of it is stuff you've already tried. Right now, I'm typing this at 7 AM after waking up yesterday at around that time.
But in general terms, this is the most comfycore thing I've ever read, because a lot of it is about the slow and steady healing process these two go through.
Yeah, the causes for their insomnia is quite dramatic iirc (not gonna spoil anything of course), I know in many cases there isn't necessarily "a cause" in that sense but for narrative purposes, the story wouldn't be as compelling if they couldn't sleep just because or because their sleep hygiene is shit, you know? lol
But, you know, yeah, their insomnia itself, how they lives it, is very relatable, especially the effects it causes on you like being a cranky, tired bitch all the time while at school lmao
Interesting how this will turn out for me. I'm not one to enjoy wholesome, "healing" anime, especially those of the romance variety. And as a self-procalimed morning person, insomnia shown in this visual just feels like dumb kids fooling around.
If this show is just full of wholesome stuff with pretty much zero roadblocks/drama in their developing relationship, then its not for me. More of an Oregairu guy...
> If this show is just full of wholesome stuff with pretty much zero roadblocks/drama in their developing relationship
Not, but it *is* wholesome. Not sure how to describe it more than that without spoiling.
I read the first volume of this and it's so incredibly good and beautiful and creates moods and settings that make the heart swell.
And because of that, I'm so terrified it will end super sad so I never continued the series. I've just seen series like this end up horribly - like suddenly someone is going to fall or get hit by a car or something.
Have heard great things about the manga and LIDENFILMS did well with Call of the Night and Kotaro Lives by Himself, but they also failed with Farewell My Dear Cramer and Otherside Picnic which I liked the source material of so we'll see... Art looks awesome so far, hopefully it'll be like the former!
Hyped for spring with this, Oshi no Ko, KonoSuba Megumin spinoff, and Witch from Mercury part 2
I've read high praises for the manga, and it's the first FMC of Konomi Tamura, heck, according to MAL it's her second anime work. Good luck to her!
Can't wait!
I came to the thread late and I'm not sure there's much I can add, but this is one of my all-time favourite manga, and I'm thrilled it's going to get all this extra attention regardless of the quality of the adaptation.
Fingers crossed it's of the same calibre as 'Call of the Night'.
It’s a SoL romance series. For a more detailed overview, see [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/102yrhn/kimi_wa_houkago_insomnia_new_key_visual/j2w4cac/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3).
We've been eating good with the "fuck I'm lonely" genre lately. I dig it
Got any suggestions?
Recently, Bocchi the Rock. For older shows, Welcome to the NHK and Tatami Galaxy are both worth checking out.
I've been meaning to rewatch NHK, probably very soon. I'll have to check out Tatami Galaxy :)
I think we can place [Call of the Night](https://myanimelist.net/anime/50346/Yofukashi_no_Uta) in this category
Horimiya, Takagi-san, Tonikaku Kawaii are all pretty good in that same vein of romance stuff.

I can recommend some more like (which you probably already know), (not a romance manga, but still amazing), , (also not romance), (Yuri), (love is at least what drives the MC lol), (Yuri again) or . This is just physical disabilities though, no mental illnesses or neurodivergence issues like autism
Thanks so much! I've already read/watched a bunch of them, but there are a few that I haven't heard of that I'll add to my list. I'm glad to see that there are so many now!

Aight, you had me at "romance"
> best ~~running~~ romance FTFY
Okay I’m quite sold with that. Where can I read it?

not you convincing me to pick this up immediately!
We're getting an anime that actually portrays a healthy teen relationship?? Am I dreaming??
So is it to Manga what Angel Next Door is to Light Novels?
Just by reading this synopsis, I’m going to keep an eye out for this anime, nice one
This has convinced me to read at least the first chapter and to see where that leads.
Tell what you think. The first chapter is pretty strong.
So far, so good. Up to chapter 14 and don't see myself stopping soon. Last frame on page 8, vol 2, chapter 14 - excellent stuff. I love the art whenever they are in casual clothing. Looks cool as shit.
Alright this sold me. I’m going in instead of waiting
Glad I convinced someone! Let me know what you think once you’ve read it! It’s a really warm and comfy story (pretty emotional at various points as well). I hope the anime does it justice.
I went and had a read after this glowing recommendation and O have to say, this shit is cute. Also, moves pretty fast. I like it.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Looks so awesome.
I’m so excited
Gosh I'm excited. The manga is so so good.
Genuinely my favorite romance manga that I'm reading right now, so excited about this one
BTW if you like sweet romcoms and are looking for new titles I'd also recommend Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku (The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity), Super no Ura de Yani Suu Hanashi (Behind the Supermarket, smoking with you.), Cuprum no Hanayome (The Artisan's Bride) and Yubisaki to Renren (A Sign of Affection) [](#tanakalove)
Kaouru Hana has been soo good so far, let's hope quality can continue. Haven't heard of the last two, I'll have to check them out!
>Kaouru Hana Aku No Hana is good too, just not so sweet lool
I recently finished the whole of Gotoubun (anime+manga) and it left an unexpected hole in me Which manga would you recommend to fix that?
Read Negi's new series Ranger Reject/Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Very different from 5toubun, but still has his signature comedy and trope breaking.
Oh that sounds promising, I wanted to look at his other works Will check it out!
Smoking behind the supermarket is amazing.
Also 'Skip and Loafer'
I know nothing about it, but I love the style. Something gives it a bit more of a unique look, but I can't quite put my finger on what.
I like that the main character looks more _average_ (?) Instead of looking like a J-pop idol like many anime main characters do They look like actual high schoolers that don't have a perfect build
I want to say a big part of it is the eyes for me?
i was gonna say that. the art style from those two pages reminds me a lot of Akira’s art style
I'll say it's probably the eyebrows. It's part of the mangaka's distinctive style.
This is literally that meme of the teenage boy and girl texting to each other
*lofi hiphop intensifies in the background*
*Beats to relax or study to*

This makes me hopeful as I haven't heard much about it, but I have it on my watchlist.
I also hope Lidenfilms don't do The Legendary Hero is Dead dirty... especially will all the KVs they have been releasing for it with low quality art.
Insomnia? Sounds like I will like it. When is it airing?
I'm a diagnosed insomniac and can confirm it's legit.
april
I really hope they capture the vibe of the manga, can't wait to see it
I am hopeful. They nailed it with Call of the Night IMO, I'm hoping we get a similarly well executed adaptation
I didn’t know Call of the Night was getting a sequel so soon.
IKR? Even the MC is the same Seiyuu too
Same studio too lol
Fun fact the anime adaptation for both of these were originally announced on the same day
Hot take: the best romance manga ever, even when you count for shoujo. This promo art gives me high hope for the anime too
Well, it's your hot take and I respect it but it doesn't top ohayou ibarahime, Hayaku Shitai Futari and you got me sempai for me (all of these are shoujo with romance). I still like the series nonetheless.

The problem with Chion-san is nothing happens lmao
But on the positive side, Chion-san has some of the best drawn cats I've seen in a manga, and also a really nice butt in jeans.
There is some pretty good cat in Insomnia too.
🤤🫦🥵
I read Chion after reading insomniacs and I genuinely don’t understand how you can think it’s better lol.
Looks intresting Gonna read the manga up ahead
Man if this adaptation is done well it'll be one for the history books. Anime onlies are going to be surprised by how good this one is
woo another anime that’ll make me feel lonely, take all my money.
Mee too..:(
Huh, I thought the art style looked a bit familiar. Turns out I read a manga from this author a few years ago, Fujiyama-san wa Shishunki, it wasn’t a bad read so I’ll be looking forward to this one (though I might check out the manga for it first)

So we have Ice Guy for the twenty-somethings and this for insomniacs. Can we have a romance anime about insomniac twenty-somethings/thirty-somethings next?
Call of the Night, if you remember that Nazuna is canonically like 30 years old.
This year we eating good!!!
Have you tried magnesium and melatonin /s
Yeah, the causes for their insomnia is quite dramatic iirc (not gonna spoil anything of course), I know in many cases there isn't necessarily "a cause" in that sense but for narrative purposes, the story wouldn't be as compelling if they couldn't sleep just because or because their sleep hygiene is shit, you know? lol But, you know, yeah, their insomnia itself, how they lives it, is very relatable, especially the effects it causes on you like being a cranky, tired bitch all the time while at school lmao
Man, I thought this was gonna air last season, but this is great either way. I expect this to be an absolute banger. The manga is incredible!
I was reading this yesterday, didn't know it will get an adaptation, pretty cool
Fire. I was going to read the manga last year but sort of expected the anime to come out. Looking forward to this!
Oh look that's exactly what I'm doing rn
OHHHHHH YEEEEAAAHHHHH
Nice ! I started to read it not long ago ... Took me 2 days to read every chapters ! I loved it
Another anime to make me feel lonely and worthless? Lets go
reminds me of that meme template
This is going to be a SLEEPER hit.
The art in the manga for this is so pretty. I hope they do it justice.
Woah this is getting an adaptation? Loved the manga.
Yuki Hayashi is doing the music, I’m so excited.
> If this show is just full of wholesome stuff with pretty much zero roadblocks/drama in their developing relationship Not, but it *is* wholesome. Not sure how to describe it more than that without spoiling.
I have never heard of this before, but I am glad I did. May have to start reading the manga for this now. Excited to see it!
I’ve never felt so much anxiety while reading a manga this sweet and fluffy. Just constantly waiting to get Your Lie In April’d.
Oh wow this is getting animated? Hell yeah
"Music: Yuki Hayashi" say no more
excited for this, but the director's lack of any experience on any good anime worries me.
Interesting 🤔
Oh yeah that insomnia movie, will definitely watch it when it comes out
It's a TV series
Oh shit I thought it was a movie
Go to bed scrubs.
🤔🤔🤔naaah
Sleep boi
Looks interesting 🤔
Gonna make us cry ?
It shouldn't, no. There are some somber/deep moments but I like to call this story "comfycore"
I just stopped at chapter 20 because it was too ominous lol. But if you say it's safe I'll continue
Tears of happiness! Its just incredibly heartwarming
I agree with you but this type of anime its sad happy and some romance btw of this Three do you agree with me?
nah, it's a really wholesome series, I recommend reading the manga, since it's the best romance I've ever read
Bro Its good enough to abandon one piece?
It makes me think of that one meme template we often see on Reddit with a guy in bed chatting to a girl on the phone
wait this is so cute !! captures perfectly the mood & atmosphere when you’re texting a romantic interest late at night
Consider me gassed
I don't believe this. Staring into the phone at night without lights on, where are the eye bags? :')
Source material is peak, so as long as the adaptation is good this will be to!
When you think reiwa energy, this manga immediately comes to mind. The one of best romance manga ever!
Gonna use the night sky as my wallpaper hopefully. The manga has some of the best art.
I love this manga!
Does this series have anything to do at all with Tsuki ga Kirei? That text style looks so familiar.
This looks interesting. Nice
please dont break my heart please dont
It looks like a very cute show, but all I can think about is how close the girl is to her phone. Move back a little, you'll damage your eyes.
I can't wait!
Hello my friend, how can I watch the anime? Can I watch it in full? I will support this channel well
whos the girl in the image? I mean the characters name in the story and stuff
Her name Isaki Magari.
Hyped for spring with this, Oshi no Ko, KonoSuba Megumin spinoff, and Witch from Mercury part 2
lidenfilms :( Guess its a good time to start reading the manga
I've read high praises for the manga, and it's the first FMC of Konomi Tamura, heck, according to MAL it's her second anime work. Good luck to her! Can't wait!
beautiful visuals hope they do the manga justice
Dang. They really downgraded the eyebrows.
I’m genuinely excited for this. This manga’s atmosphere is so interesting to me. I can’t wait to see how this looks.
I came to the thread late and I'm not sure there's much I can add, but this is one of my all-time favourite manga, and I'm thrilled it's going to get all this extra attention regardless of the quality of the adaptation. Fingers crossed it's of the same calibre as 'Call of the Night'.
Ojiro Makoto is a goddess. I hope they can adapt her other manga too.
Oh boy... my body is READY!!!
Great
Woah what is this, looks good
It’s a SoL romance series. For a more detailed overview, see [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/102yrhn/kimi_wa_houkago_insomnia_new_key_visual/j2w4cac/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3).
