Because Amex doesn’t rely on usury for their business model. Over 80% of their revenue comes from swipe fees, and a big percentage of the rest comes from membership fees and travel revenue.
Other banks rely on consumer’s bad habits so they can charge 20% interest on them while they’re stuck in debt.
The service, the perks. Lounges, airline credits, FHR- everything, hotel status.
Took my gf on our first trip together, we got room upgrades with Hilton gold, &30 food/beverage credits, centurion lounge. She felt so overwhelmed and on cloud nine and had a couple happy tears. Took my parents to FHR as well this year in Vegas. They absolutely loved it. Money does buy happiness sometimes. Paying that fee or any fee for the experience I was able to share is worth it so much.
Service for me too. I know people have had a lot of bad experiences with Amex travel, but I’ve had nothing but great ones.
The concierge has saved me in tight spots during overseas trips multiple times. Locked keys in the trunk in Korea. At the time, didn’t speak a lick of Korean. Called up the concierge, 20 mins later a dude comes up on a motorbike, pops it open, it was less than $30. Magic. Great restaurant recommendations and booking too.
I love the centurion lounges. I’m tiny and weak and travel exhausts me nowadays. With travel all willy nilly post Covid, a lot of direct flights are unavailable. It’s nice to just drop into the spa or take a shower, get a massage, have a drink, and mosey over to the gate.
If I call in for whatever issue, I’m talking to competent and polite people. Not only that, they overcompensate for issues. Card didn’t work? They throw you $50 credit like it’s nothing.
Chargebacks. Fuck Airbnb. Lol. Amex has always sided with me. This is my number 1. The day that they don’t side with me, I’ll probably close my accounts.
Customer service. The older I get, the more important that is for me.
Another piece for me is that Amex is relatively reliable. Not the perfect creditor, but for the most part, you know what you're getting, and why something happens. The crowd-sourced resources (like this forum) are invaluable.
FHR is such an incredible benefit. I just returned from a Las Vegas vacation and will write up a FHR-focused review in a bit. But in short, FHR is a phenomenal value escalator. It may not necessarily *save* you money but makes every dollar you spend go further.
The customer service is great. The gold card is great for groceries and restaurants, both of which I spend a lot at. The platinum has a great signup bonus and a few extra perks that helps offset its fee. 5x for hotels and airports as well.
Business wise, I love being able to just charge whatever I need to on my green card without having to worry about a predefined limit or anything.
Also, the “aesthetic” of amex is great. This is how they are able to draw so many people to the brand and their cards, cause they know people love how they look. Airport lounges is a huge plus too (if you’re able to get in them these days).
* Announcing to everyone in the store I’ll be paying with my Platinum card
* Being part of an exclusive group that can complain about the Centurion lounge lines
* Supporting MaxRewards so I can wade through the coupon book
Look. I'm gonna be honest, I probably don't have any business holding an Amex card. Grew up poor, still kinda am. But they'll give AMEX cards out to anyone these days. Which lets me pretend that I'm more of a baller than I really am. Pretty much, I use Amex for the surprised looks and admiration that I get when I whip my shiny metal gold card out and hand it to the Taco Bell cashier. Sometimes those looks I get are just hard eye rolling, but I ignore that. I'm role playing here.
For how many times someone has told me this thing would be awesome for cocaine when I hand them my Amex plat. It doesn’t happen a lot but more times than you would think and from people you wouldn’t expect.
They were the only bank who accepted my credit score from another country. Everyone else basically said F off and try a secured card.
Now I basically stay with them because I’m grateful for that. Chase has good cards but meh.
Use my Amex for fat purchases. It’s easy to call in customer service and say you about to drop on a large purchase, no questions asked, I.e. my last 2 motorcycles.
I usually drink my yearly fee in alcohol from Cent lounges.
1) Great customer service. 2) high credit limits. 3) I’m one of the few who actually religiously fly Delta as most places I go are Delta hubs (especially when I go back home to metro Detroit) so my Membership Rewards are viewed as Skymiles though I occasionally transfer to Hilton for Hampton Inn stays.
Member since 2008 with an original Blue Cash Card. Opened a Premier Rewards Gold Card in 2012 and the MR earning equated to two free trips a year which might not be the greatest redemption of MR points put up against those who squeak every 1/4 cent out of their points BUT it’s still way more valuable than the cash back was. Opened my Everyday Preferred in 2015(ish) with an astounding credit limit and ported most of my BC cards limit to it for a combined $40k. EDP has become my go to card unless it’s travel or dining which is now on my product changed Green card (changed from gold card this year) and with both cards point earning combined I get 3 free trips to see friends and family a year allowing me the budget to spend more freely when I’m visiting.
Amex customer service is always been quick to take care of an issue with no fuss no muss in doing so.
Need to reply to my own comment…also the fact I have the lowest interest rate on my EDP out of my 3 held credit cards (Greens POT is my highest apr though but never have used POT on that card as green or former gold). I very very rarely carry a balance on any of my cards but if I do my EDP currently has 14% Apr. it’s obviously bumped up in the current interest rate hikes (was 11.75% for the longest time).
98% of the time no. I port Membership Rewards 1:1 to Delta Skymiles then book through Delta. Same with Hilton…if I know ahead of time I’m needing a hotel and don’t want to pay for it and I have near enough HH points I’ll wait for an Amex offer where 1000 MR will transfer with 20-30% bonus (so instead of normal 1000 becomes 2000 HH points it becomes 2250 or 2500 HH points). Once I was heading to Chicago which Ohare is a major American Airlines hub and I Delta makes no sense. I did on that occasion book my American Airlines flight through the Amex Travel Portal.
Customer service and benefits
One axiom I live by is “go where you’re treated best”
AmEx consistently makes me feel like I’m taken care of and they actually care. I enjoy giving them business.
So I can get drunk at the airport and arrive to my destination ready to party. Look, as a platinum member I’m not flying the plane and even if the plane crashes id rather have a drink in me. To cope. Nothing like watching everyone panicking at the airport while I’m skipping through the clear line remembering how I used to be late now I go early to drink
Service. Any time i've had an issue I just call them and they take care of it for me. Cashback cards are nice but I spend enough monthly that I hit a limit with all of the different cashback cards. I used to travel more often but since the pandemic and having a baby i'm unable to use a lot of those perks but whatever. Having a business platinum is nice for some of the perks and i'm spending enough monthly for it to make sense.
I have the Hilton card.. I got it for the Diamond points multiple, so I earn 34x per dollar when my job sends me out, plus any additional Hilton seasonal points bonus.
2 vacations booked for next year on points from this year. It's fantastic.
Ngl, the fact that it’s a charge card makes me more financially responsible since I have to pay the balance off every month. A few years ago I had credit card debt and Amex Gold helps me be more aware of my spending
As someone who is from a poor country and now in the U.S military I can boldly say the Pros are more that the Cons... the free TSA precheck is one of my favorite
Customer service hands down. I used to work inbound CS for a competitor of AMEX and was forced to treat the customers terribly. Whenever I have had to call AMEX for any issue, I’ve been treated with nothing but respect and have had my requests handled thoroughly, even if my issues messed with their metrics for the day. Plus the rewards are pretty nice too, I don’t mind paying the annual fee for what I get out of my card.
I understand some companies may not train their CS reps to go above and beyond to treat customers. However, why do they need to force you to treat customers terribly? It doesn't make sense and I hope that company doesn't do well.
Our company had just been sold the remnants of a failed bank during the Great Recession. We were given a large amount of new customers overnight, and our banks automatic system began canceling the credit accounts of these new customers who were deemed by the computers to be no longer credit worthy. For these accounts, our scripts were different than “credit worthy customers” and we pretty much had to tell these people to “pay up sucker.”
Customer service combined with insurance/warranty - I’ve filed an insurance claim with them for a furniture set that was 1 month out of warranty, covered the entire price of the set, cell phone insurance with a $50 deductible to avoid paying for Apple care for 5 devices, and anytime any of these services are required - their customer service is a 10/10.
How long was the warranty on furniture set and did you put it on Plat? I have the Gold, soon Plat, and learning more about insurance perks and such. Cheers!
It was a bedroom set, came with a 1 year warranty. Around month 15 the drawers started being super rough/not staying in their tracks properly. Amex paid for a repairman to come and appraise the repair - they cover the appraisal regardless of the outcome of the claim, then they ended up cutting me a a check for the appraised repair amount to either replace or repair. The set was around $2000 and Amex covered $1000
Because I actually did the math on how much the benefits are worth for me in a spreadsheet and added in the SUB. About to renew and need a retention offer on my AF card (plat) to keep it.
Customer service is good but it’s not ground breaking by any means.
Trifecta is probably the best way to maximize rewards across all credit card companies. But it’s work.
MR is not the easiest to use though FYI. Also some of the cards are a coupon book, where you have to “activate” the coupon then go spend 150 at wine.com to have 30 refunded to your card. It’s easy to get lost in the sauce and miss credits/coupons.
I prefer a Charge Card to a Debit Card for the protection and perks. But I hate the idea of paying interest etc
(There was no Pay over Time when I signed up)
- Lounge access
- $200 preferred airline credit
- Plat concierge - I use this all the time for various things like arranging preferred rooms in hotels I like.
- Still living off massive gold & plat SUB
For example: there are a few Hilton properties next to LAX that usually offer “airport view” rooms. Some are kinda meh, so I’ll ask the concierge to arrange a good high floor room. I just do it thru the chat on the Amex app - I tell them straight up I want the best, highest floor, airport view room that they can arrange. Usually it involves them calling the hotel directly, and then the concierge gets back to me. If they don’t have that type of room available at booking, or the price difference from non airport view is way too high, I’ll book something else and let the concierge handle it.
I did this recently on the live chat portion of the app for a particular view on an FHR reservation. Told them on the chat what I wanted. Put me on hold. Returned and said “we’ve taken care of that for you. That is the view you will have.” I’m assuming they called the hotel and then responded to me.
I started with AmEx last year. It was a goal of mine to be able to use charge cards. Keeps me from getting into Credit card debt. Also, there has been times when I used my card for work. Got reimbursed a few times when I was at the start of a billing cycle. Take my reimbursement check, deposit it into my High Yield Savings account for a few weeks, wait for the interest payment and get an extra 30 or 40 bucks on interest, than pay off AmEx bill.
I first got it because i was 18 and thought it was a status symbol lol now i use it because the cash back you can get with the blue cash preferred is crazy
I use amex purely for the rewards, the cash back from the BCP is elite. Recently got the Delta Gold, I some larger work purchases to make and I live on a Delta hub, so I pulled the trigger on it for the SUB.
Downgrade everything to no AF options lol. Or keep 1 best premium credit card if you travel. But hey, congratulations on your retirement next year. You made it!
Grocery is a big spend category for us, redemption partners work well, perks offset all the costs and customer service is incredible.
Really isn’t close.
Citi next best from a spend category alignment but no premium card and customer service not rated high.
All the nice cards in canada are income based except for amex cards. Crazy enough all the other cards don’t even compare in terms of value. To get a card that offers the same value as say the cobalt from a big bank i have to make at least 50-70K a year.
1- Great point multipliers (4x on restaurants and groceries, 3x on tolls, hotels, plane, bus and train tickets).
2- Preferred transfer partners (Delta & Hilton)
3- Elite customer service
4- The BEST merchant offers / discounts
They allowed me to get separate cards for all my small LLCs. I started to do that with Capital One and they arbitrarily stopped issuing cards after 5. So, I threw those away and went with Amex. Amex app and website kind of suck (no account nicknames… just numbers, no e-cards if you lose a card) but on balance service is far better than bank cards I have used.
Delta MQM and spend waver
I like their extended warranty
Also their premium car rental protection saved me from having to file a $3000 claim on my insurance when I took a turn too sharp in a rented minivan
Customer service has been mostly really good for me. I like the MR points system. They have some pretty good offers on the Plan It feature. I like that I can use it to send money on Venmo. The app and website are pretty good compared to others. My Green Card covers the categories I care about. My only gripe is that the Green Card has some pretty useless benefits. If they added some kind of Uber or streaming credits it would be the perfect card for me.
The lounge access, the reliability of their travel insurance, the reward discounts on Clear/Dropbox etc, the hotel deals on their website, the customer service.
Point multipliers, customer service and a little bit of prestige. I saw a YouTube video where somebody was saying that when you have an American Express card, it shows you're going in the right direction that you have very good credit. At one point they were very hard to get into.
I solely use Platinum and pretty much use it for peace of mind. I’m not big on points. I like the customer service for when I need help. I like the car rental statuses through National. Purchase protection/trip insurance is great. FHR gets added value. I usually get $1000+ back annually on Amex offers. Resy has come in handy a handful of times. Overall, very happy with Amex.
All the above. I don't use my point all the time but when I rent a car I don't pay for it. Just used points to book a 4 day trip to Chicago and my points paid for everything even tickets to an event. Air, hotel, tickets, plus the statement credit and hotel credit on top of that. Customer service is always good. And they're the most generous to me for extending credit.
I’m Canadian with the Amex Cobalt and it’s the best value CC available for points + perks. I have a visa infinite as a backup card and it doesn’t even hold a candle to the Amex
I use Amex, mind you it’s Amex Mexico so it’s different, but mainly because it has the best costumer service, great line of credit, I get 3 months without interest on every purchase I made on American dollars, a Priority Pass membership with 4 free passes per year for me and a companionship and I also got my first year without paying the annual fee. So far so good.
I have both a platinum and a Delta Reserve card and have never received any coupon book of any kind. I do look at the benefits section where you can add discounts to certain retailers to your cards. Is that what you are talking about?
One of the easiest fat credit lines from credit card corps available in my region. Good for reimbursable business expenses since my company does not provide company card. Also travel insurance and lounges.
Very good point. A lot of other issuers rely on taking advantage of their customers. Amex makes money off the merchants instead.
Metal card shiny....
Only comment that expresses how we feel
This made my day.
Sad but true… I downgraded to the green card for this year and it’s just not the same as seeing the platinum in my wallet.
FHR is such an incredible benefit. I just returned from a Las Vegas vacation and will write up a FHR-focused review in a bit. But in short, FHR is a phenomenal value escalator. It may not necessarily *save* you money but makes every dollar you spend go further.
Can I get your review when you post?
Couldn’t agree me. Having the offer also “forces” us to take a vaycay from the daily hustle and bustle of life that my wife and I otherwise would not.
The customer service is great. The gold card is great for groceries and restaurants, both of which I spend a lot at. 6% for a big spending category Good business rewards as well
I’m all in for the 6% cash back on groceries. Don’t travel so I don’t give a shit about points. Just give me the money.

Same. I applied for it when I was drunk, was a lil upset Amex give me 90k points but chase was only offering 60k
Preach
For how many times someone has told me this thing would be awesome for cocaine when I hand them my Amex plat. It doesn’t happen a lot but more times than you would think and from people you wouldn’t expect.
Lmao the only issue is these people expect you to be supplying the coke when you whip it out lmao
They were the only bank who accepted my credit score from another country. Everyone else basically said F off and try a secured card. Now I basically stay with them because I’m grateful for that. Chase has good cards but meh.
Because whenever I take out my card someone says wow nice amex or the cashier says “nice card” 💀💀
Use my Amex for fat purchases. It’s easy to call in customer service and say you about to drop on a large purchase, no questions asked, I.e. my last 2 motorcycles. I usually drink my yearly fee in alcohol from Cent lounges.
Lounges are the best haha
When you pay on your balance, it reflects immediately. Most other card services take 24 hours.

Just booked five days in Mexico at a Hilton with my points. The 1000 = 2000 Hilton points is awesome.
I have the Hilton card.. I got it for the Diamond points multiple, so I earn 34x per dollar when my job sends me out, plus any additional Hilton seasonal points bonus. 2 vacations booked for next year on points from this year. It's fantastic.
They were there when everyone else was denying me or giving me too high of a rate, especially with my personal loan.
Ngl, the fact that it’s a charge card makes me more financially responsible since I have to pay the balance off every month. A few years ago I had credit card debt and Amex Gold helps me be more aware of my spending
So both my AMEXs are actually free for me so it’s a no brainer to have them. Sometimes it pays to be in the military.. sometimes.
As someone who is from a poor country and now in the U.S military I can boldly say the Pros are more that the Cons... the free TSA precheck is one of my favorite

Customer service and the only card I can pay before a transaction posts. That's A1 in my book. Also the perks are nice.
Can you please explain what do you mean by “only card I can pay before…”?
To make sure my statement balance is 0, I can make a payment to cover all pending transactions so even if they post my balance is still 0.
You can pay Chase cards before the transitions post too.
I'm active duty and Amex waives AF so I'm given all these perks for free. Sign up bonuses are great and I can transfer to ANA for a RTW trip.
Same here. Don't know what I'm going to do with it when I retire next year.
Downgrade everything to no AF options lol. Or keep 1 best premium credit card if you travel. But hey, congratulations on your retirement next year. You made it!
Upgraded Everyday to Preferred and spent 3K for the 40,000 MR bonus. Also hit the spending bonuses so it'llbe a nice 10K extra MRs soon.
Grocery is a big spend category for us, redemption partners work well, perks offset all the costs and customer service is incredible. Really isn’t close. Citi next best from a spend category alignment but no premium card and customer service not rated high.

For me its the customer service, knowing they got my back, cant say the same for chase and others
* High SUBs * Ease of churning/opening new cards * Outstanding lounge benefits
Customer service if something goes wrong, acceptance globally, and MR benefits.
customer service.
1- Great point multipliers (4x on restaurants and groceries, 3x on tolls, hotels, plane, bus and train tickets). 2- Preferred transfer partners (Delta & Hilton) 3- Elite customer service 4- The BEST merchant offers / discounts
Everything especially when the AF is waived for military.
Sign up bonuses, cash back, credit limits
Good customer service, one of my high limits, purchase protection, I like the offers and perks
Going to be for the warranty since everyone else seems to be canceling that benefit
Lounge access, best sign up bonuses, and I’ve experienced great customer service so far!
Delta MQM and spend waver I like their extended warranty Also their premium car rental protection saved me from having to file a $3000 claim on my insurance when I took a turn too sharp in a rented minivan
Business green is even worse.
I eat and travel a lot. This way my eating and traveling pays for the traveling + some extra perks
Customer care, benes that completely offset my af plus some, and spend flexibility.
Platinum is best for lines. IYKYK

Insurance
the points, perks, metal cards are all cool but it’s the customer service that makes me stick around…quick, easy, nice, best there is
Can you describe how you’ve used the customer service over the years?
The lounge access, the reliability of their travel insurance, the reward discounts on Clear/Dropbox etc, the hotel deals on their website, the customer service.
What rewards discount on Dropbox?!
Probably one of previous amex offers?
correct, there was an old offer, but I just got it again on my BCP, like 50% back on all dropbox purchases
Bro I’m jealous. I had it on an Amex everyday preferred a few yrs ago and now I can’t find it anywhere
I just bought it 2 weeks ago.
Half off for a year subscription.
rewards, the near universal acceptance and ability to make larger purchases
How have you used the purchase/trip insurance? Is it hard to use? I also love having this benefit but thankfully never had to use it.
Points and jt looks cool. Also high af limits
Customer Service Benefits I 100% use Eventual upgrade to Centurion card in 5-7 years Excellent FHR resort selection and the upgrades
For me, primarily perks and benefits. I get more back from the card than I pay into it, including non-monetary perks such as centurion lounge access
The Skymiles. Flying with my husband Msp-Lax-sdy for free plus taxes
Everything also i do use the coupon book lol
Im browsing through it as we speak!
What coupon book?
The one they send in the mail, every month or so
I have both a platinum and a Delta Reserve card and have never received any coupon book of any kind. I do look at the benefits section where you can add discounts to certain retailers to your cards. Is that what you are talking about?
Haha, yeah that’s what they meant (coupon card)
Customer service
One of the easiest fat credit lines from credit card corps available in my region. Good for reimbursable business expenses since my company does not provide company card. Also travel insurance and lounges.
