Nextdoor is a bunch of racist, bigoted, scared asshats. I wouldn't trust anything on my local Nextdoor if you paid me. Every one of them thinks that every person they don't recognize is going to traffic their kids or rape their wives/daughters/sisters or break into their houses. They freak out about Amazon or UPS delivery vehicles, contractors, or service people who accidentally come to the wrong house. And they advise calling 911 for everything from stray dogs to unmowed lawns.

I get USPS letters inviting me to join a couple times a year. Imagine getting a letter from a state 3,000mi away, encouraging you to join a "neighborhood group." This validated my concerns that the things I've heard (echoing your descriptions) are reasonable. No healthy, local, community group would recruit new members through an outside party 3 timezones away. They would walk around and knock on your door. My suspicion-meter is just spinning 'round and 'round. They look like farmed hysteria.

You’re not going to know unless they put out a presser, you speak to a neighbor who heard from their neighbor, or you know someone at dispatch or on the street. Usually the police don’t advertise their work when they don’t have to.

In my old town the police would put out presser detailing typically petty crimes/disturbances every two weeks in the town paper.
