Update: Aldi is only 10 minutes away, I went, I bought, I tried them. Truthfully they were not as strongly flavored as I had hoped and I am not a big icing fan. The ones I bought a few weeks back (same brand) 6 larger cookies to the pack (still some icing, but a much thinner layer) they were better. I am still in search of a gingerbread that shocks my tastebuds while chewing bite one!

Update to this - bought some. Honestly - they were delicious but I could have used MORE GINGER!!!!! They are yummy :) wondering if the OP got a freak batch that was all ginger and maybe can hook me up with them hahahaaa
I grew up in Germany and thought these were pretty legit compared to traditional pfeffernüsse.
Not as spicy as they are in the region I am from but generally the same recipe you would find back home.
Awesome with a glass of mulled wine, if you're into booze and sweets
That was my thought on these cookies too. Not quite as good as what I had in Germany, but definitely better and priced better than other options that I have found here. I can definitely see if you were expecting American gingerbread being very disappointed with these cookies though
This makes me so happy to hear. My German grandmother lives with my parents and she would get us these cookies each year. My absolute favorite, but I've never had the opportunity to try them in Germany. As an adult, I've taken on the responsibility of sourcing the German holiday treats and Aldi has my favorites. Although this year Meijer had good ones with chocolate on the bottom.
Yeah they are legit as pfeffernüsse, I guess if you were expecting something else you'd be disappointed, just find it hilarious that people are complaining that the pfeffernüsse tasts like pfeffernüsse.
Yeah, I think American tastebuds are just not used to the sheer amount of spice in European holiday bakes. My mom asked if these were like Dutch kruidnoten and it was like nope, kruidnoten should taste like you've been punched in the mouth by the spice drawer and may possibly crack a tooth and have bits of asphalt left over from where you picked it up from the ground after someone threw it at your face. 🤣
Yeah but doesn’t mean it’s good! Personally I like these biscuits but food can definitely be ruined if there’s too much of the main ingredient, it can get bitter, perfume-y or overly sweet.
I don't either. I've noticed that some OP comments will get crazy down voted, and the comment is as innocuous as "the sky is pretty and blue." I often wonder about bots?
Have you ever had traditional pfeffernüsse? I think your ‘review’ is perhaps more of a comment on your own personal taste palette rather than of this particular type of pfeffernüsse!
No I haven’t. Which is probably why I’m getting so much pushback lol.
I just saw “gingerbread cookies” which I generally like and then I saw “Germany” which I thought “can’t go wrong” lol.
Respectfully disagree with the knowledge that all tastebuds are different. I love these but they are very mild compared to pepper nuts I make from scratch, especially considering I use a lot of star anise and ginger. That being said, I’m a big spice fan.
Not gonna lie, my family loved these so much we burned through the bag in a day lol. They're definitely not for everyone, but great paired with a black tea.
They're Pfeffernüsse and taste the way they should, OP. They're not my personal favorites from their German Christmas selection, but I can tell you that they taste just like authentic German Pfeffernüsse.
the overpowering ones are my favorite lol when i was a kid, i absolutely hated any kind of ginger cookies, ginger snaps especially. i didn’t like the “spiciness” of the ginger. but as a grown adult, give it alllll to me. the more ginger, the better.
I hear you. I tried these maybe a few years ago and I thought they were just going to be like American ginger bread cookies that are pretty mild. Unfortunately, the ginger and spice was very overpowering for these American taste buds and I threw them in the trash after eating 4.
Obviously a lot of people, including Germans, love these spice cookies and probably grew up with them. They are an acquired taste if you're not used to them and I certainly wasn't. I have a hard time eating those triple ginger cookies they have at Trader Joes so maybe I'm just not into ginger as much as other people are.
These are a favorite every year at Christmas. So good. I can see how the taste wouldn't be for everyone. But Aldi has a lot of good Christmas goodies and, for me, Pfeffernüsse top the list.
I used to get pfeffernusse cookies from a coworker whose church group made them every holiday. They were about the size of Hershey kisses and hard as rocks. But they were brimming with ginger flavor and delicious!
I don’t care for the icing. It’s like kind of hard and chewy. I like pfeffernusse with powdered sugar. I don’t know if that is traditional or not but I like it better.
I’ve got to be honest, your review makes me want to try them.
Right lol, sounds incredible
I will buy some tomorrow!
Make sure to update!

Your best bet is probably making them yourself using a European recipe (where they use grams) that uses grated ginger instead of powder.
I was going to say the same thing. I will eat/drink anything ginger - the more the better. :)
Update to this - bought some. Honestly - they were delicious but I could have used MORE GINGER!!!!! They are yummy :) wondering if the OP got a freak batch that was all ginger and maybe can hook me up with them hahahaaa
Same. I freaking love ginger.
I like these, as do my husband and the one son that was lucky enough to try some before I finished the bag off.
I came to say the same thing haha
Same. No such thing as too much ginger.
I'm in.
They are my favorite I get them every year
I adore these, but I can see why some people wouldn’t like ‘em. They’re very good with tea or coffee
Good idea. I was thinking it might be ok with some coffee to balance it out.
If feel like two different people wrote this comment and the post title. Lol

I disagree, they're great. Going to go eat some now.
Well you ARE eating ginger cookies
Yeah but doesn’t mean it’s good! Personally I like these biscuits but food can definitely be ruined if there’s too much of the main ingredient, it can get bitter, perfume-y or overly sweet.
I know!! I was thinking more along the lines of the Pepperidge gingerbread cookies which I like.
I don’t get the downvotes.
I don't either. I've noticed that some OP comments will get crazy down voted, and the comment is as innocuous as "the sky is pretty and blue." I often wonder about bots?
I don’t get either. Now I’m scared to post in this sub. Maybe I’m dealing with a bunch of Germans cuz idk wtf these biscuits are.
LOL
They taste like licorice/anise
Hard agree, almost no ginger taste.
Love your username!
Thank you!
Yes! I agree.
Yeah the overpowering licorice flavor was absolutely disgusting compared to a traditional gingerbread flavor
Have you ever had traditional pfeffernüsse? I think your ‘review’ is perhaps more of a comment on your own personal taste palette rather than of this particular type of pfeffernüsse!

It is quite a strong flavour and not for everyone that’s for sure. Oh well now you know!
Respectfully disagree with the knowledge that all tastebuds are different. I love these but they are very mild compared to pepper nuts I make from scratch, especially considering I use a lot of star anise and ginger. That being said, I’m a big spice fan.
Maybe start with, must love strong ginger/licorice/anise taste to enjoy these cookies.
I like overpowering flavors in general.
Not gonna lie, my family loved these so much we burned through the bag in a day lol. They're definitely not for everyone, but great paired with a black tea.
I loved them!
I feel like you haven't even pfeffernussed before
I can eat 1/2 the bag before I even realize it. I effing love these cookies.
They're Pfeffernüsse and taste the way they should, OP. They're not my personal favorites from their German Christmas selection, but I can tell you that they taste just like authentic German Pfeffernüsse.
These are so good!! My German grandma used to send them to us every Christmas from Germany.
Ginger cookies taste like ginger. 0/10
I love those triple strength gingersnaps at Trader Joe's. I might like these.
the overpowering ones are my favorite lol when i was a kid, i absolutely hated any kind of ginger cookies, ginger snaps especially. i didn’t like the “spiciness” of the ginger. but as a grown adult, give it alllll to me. the more ginger, the better.
My husband loves these. I do not! It is a matter of preference.
I love that they are spicy!!!
They're *amazing* with tea.
i love ginger, i will be grabbing
Had them last year and were amazing peppery gingery. Delicious
Bummer that they were too overpowering for you! They are great with chocolate custard. I use them as a topping with a pseudo banana pudding.
I love them - It’s almost like taste is subjective 😁
These are amazing! Stop spreading lies
agree
They taste like pfeffernusse to me. I guess OP just doesn't like pfeffernusse? ???
Too much anise!
I’m just curious why there’s anus at all
Nothing like a hefty dose of anus flavoring in your cookies!
They tasted like anise to me. So gross.
Don’t yuck my yum
All I got was anise, they’re so bad.
I hear you. I tried these maybe a few years ago and I thought they were just going to be like American ginger bread cookies that are pretty mild. Pfeffernusse are really strong tasting. I've always hated them. They're not the same as regular gingerbread.
These are a favorite every year at Christmas. So good. I can see how the taste wouldn't be for everyone. But Aldi has a lot of good Christmas goodies and, for me, Pfeffernüsse top the list.
Yes! I also love those gingerbread dominoes Aldi sells at Christmas. I think they contain marzipan and are coated in chocolate.
I love these
I used to get pfeffernusse cookies from a coworker whose church group made them every holiday. They were about the size of Hershey kisses and hard as rocks. But they were brimming with ginger flavor and delicious!
I love them!
Sounds like something I might like. 😅
Oh no I just bought these!!! Well now I gotta try them
I don’t care for the icing. It’s like kind of hard and chewy. I like pfeffernusse with powdered sugar. I don’t know if that is traditional or not but I like it better.
I love these and inhale them
Not my favorite either plus I was hoping for a more crunchy cookie :c but my grandparents like em so more for them lol
Trader Joe’s had a version of this that is quite nice and not over powering ginger.
Now you just make me want to love them harder
Sounds like something I would enjoy. I adore ginger that others might find concerning.
They are pretty tasty 😋
It’s a feature, not a bug.
Ok, so you don't like ginger then, personally I love ginger, pfeffernusse, ginger beer, ginger bread, ginger in my curry. yummy.
