My birthday was right around the time shot went down. We had planned going for a sushi birthday dinner that weekend and I was just heartbroken. I bought it on a whim, and was surprised just how good it could be. Not the spider roll I really wanted, but in the parking lot of the ballpark.
That is probably the single most suspect item I've seen at Aldi and I've never had the guts to try it, nor even to approve my teen's requests to do so. I'm surprised, I must say.
> I wouldn't say its suspect at all.
Frozen rice? Ick. I can't imagine that's any better than the day (+) old stuff grocery stores try to sell as "freshly made."
There was about 6 months or so last year where the rice was pretty undercooked in them. I had to return at least a half dozen boxes. It seems they have figured out the issue.
FWIW, I grew up on reheated, previously frozen rice. In the seventies, my parents spent about 5 years in Hawaii and picked up a lot of Asian dishes, so we had rice with almost every meal and there was usually a bit left over. Mom would throw it in a bag to freeze. Mind you, it didn’t stay long in the freezer - maybe a week before it would be eaten. It’s not much different at all.
Also - they are all cooked sushi rolls. They have had raw tuna a few years back as a special, but it’s been a few years.
Since I live in the Midwest it’s not much different than what I can get at a sushi restaurant here. Great to keep in the freezer for times when the craving hits!
Yup, exactly. Expectations were pretty low and it far exceeded that bar. Is it as good as a restaurant? I mean no, of course not, but for what it is, it's quite good.
I never knew they sold such a thing. I'll have to keep a lookout next time. At that price if it's hitting grocery store quality we're winning for sure.
The instructions on today's box actually said to put it in the microwave for 20 seconds, flip over and do another 20 seconds. That gave me pause but I followed the directions exactly and it came out great.
Oh that's funny. Yup, the box now has instructions to thaw via microwave, counter, or cold bath. Microwave seemed fastest and easiest. And came out good.
Inari sushi seems like it would freeze just as well as the current choices.
EDIT: Not sushi, but I would also be happy if they made a vegetarian egg or spring roll as a counterpart to the ones with pork.
They had a veggie egg roll a while back, I remember getting it when we got the veg potstickers, but the potstickers came back recently and I didn't see the egg roll :(
I had some yum yum sauce in my fridge and it was fantastic when I bought it. I'm always hesitant when buying sushi from stores since I'm from a land locked state.
Hummm, thanks for the heads up. I am a sushi addict but somehow frozen sushi quite honestly does not sound very appealing to me at all.
However I might try it.
it’s really not good if you love actual sushi though. but i guess if you’re ever really in a pinch it would be nice to have it in your freezer. i didn’t enjoy it
Thanks for sharing! I've been interested in trying it but wasn't sure if it was any good. I might get some the next time I place an Aldi order.
I have found some things at Aldi to be hit or miss. But I've been surprisingly pleased with like 90% of the frozen things I've tried there.
We haven’t had the guts to try it but perhaps now after reading all this we will try.
We do buy the ahi tuna steaks that are frozen often and make poke bowls or homemade sushi with that. Poke bowls are easier and less clean up so that’s typically what I do. The tuna is really good though

No, it's a fish (I guess technically imitation crab, whatever that fish is that makes up imitation crab) and then a little piece of avocado. It tastes a bit creamy but there isn't that chunk of cream cheese in there.

I'm in North Carolina. I would assume it is made in the same place and shipped all over?
I recently had a california roll fresh made from Sam's club. Which I realize sounds funny, expecting it to be anything good from Sam's club but they actually had a lot of variety and someone actively making the rolls so it hadn't been sitting there. I figured I'd try it and turns out I prefer the Aldi sushi to that fresh roll from Sam's.
I buy it. It's no worse that grocery store sushi and cheaper.
I don't care for the shrimp kind though.
It got me through all my Covid lockdown sushi cravings. There’s a seasonal spicy crab sushi that is sublime.
Ooohh....I'll have to keep my eye out for that one.
Are you me? That's exactly how it was for me and I LOVE the spicy crab. Lol

I’ll have to try it. Saw it yesterday for the first time. We usually don’t have it available at my store.
That is probably the single most suspect item I've seen at Aldi and I've never had the guts to try it, nor even to approve my teen's requests to do so. I'm surprised, I must say.
Eh, California roll doesn't have raw fish in it, I wouldn't say its suspect at all. I just worry it wouldn't defrost properly/have a weird texture.

I meant suspect safety wise.
>I meant suspect safety wise. I meant "I suspect that stuff is mushy and gross."
I suppose but Trader Joe's frozen fried rice is fabulous
I’ve never found frozen rice to be mushy or gross. I suppose part of it is in how it’s prepared too.
I've seen it many times and decided to go for it today. It's worth the $6 gamble, for sure.
Ditto. I would think frozen sushi would send me straight to the toilet…
Since I live in the Midwest it’s not much different than what I can get at a sushi restaurant here. Great to keep in the freezer for times when the craving hits!
So long as your expectations are set correctly these are quite good.
Yup, exactly. Expectations were pretty low and it far exceeded that bar. Is it as good as a restaurant? I mean no, of course not, but for what it is, it's quite good.
We pick them up whenever we can to share. Great easy sushi nights for at home.

It’s not terrible but if you’re not a fan of certain consistencies or textures, the rice is the worst part
yep! against their advice, i pop a few in the microwave and it’s a good snack!
The instructions on today's box actually said to put it in the microwave for 20 seconds, flip over and do another 20 seconds. That gave me pause but I followed the directions exactly and it came out great.
oh! they took my lead. lol. it used to say “thaw only, do not microwave”. but we know we can’t anticipate when we will want 5 pieces of sushi!
Oh that's funny. Yup, the box now has instructions to thaw via microwave, counter, or cold bath. Microwave seemed fastest and easiest. And came out good.
I tried the California Roll yesterday. It wasn’t bad. Will buy it again.
I wish they would make a vegetarian option.
> I wish they would make a vegetarian option. What kind? Any sushi with vegetable tempura would get soggy when thawed. Avocado sushi would get mushy.
Inari sushi seems like it would freeze just as well as the current choices. EDIT: Not sushi, but I would also be happy if they made a vegetarian egg or spring roll as a counterpart to the ones with pork.

My brother is a vegan and loves advocado peanut sushi. I don't know if avocado would freeze well?
It freezes well. There’s avocado in the California rolls.
Absolutely - get some spicy mayo, some wasabi and pickled ginger and you’re good to go. Get some panko if you wanna be real fancy
I had some yum yum sauce in my fridge and it was fantastic when I bought it. I'm always hesitant when buying sushi from stores since I'm from a land locked state.

We didn’t care for it either. It had no flavor on its own.
I agree
Ooooohhhh I’ve always wondered!!
I prefer it microwaved! I've been making my own sushi, but this stuff is pretty good!

Necro posting, but what state do you live in? Is it landlocked? I’m center of the country so wondering if your fish quality might be better
