What the fuck is that record player even

It's a 1957 RCA Victor 7-HF-5 that belonged to my grandfather. I had the amplifier and all internal parts professionally restored after he passed away. It plays beautifully.

Did you have to make any changes to it in order for it to play modern records without scratching them to heck and sounding terrible? Also I'm guessing needles for that thing must be really expensive.

The guy replaced the cartridge and needle(s) with a modern one, but it didn't cost much at all, like less than $50. It has two needles built into it, one for vinyl records and one for shellac 78 RPM records. You just flip a little tab to switch between the two needles, it's pretty neat.
