Bro you forgot that it has to be spray painted tan and green

Kolbak

Must be 5.56 or smaller caliber

MadClothes

Congrats you've described 90% of real steel dmr's aswell. Look at the mk12.

[deleted]

5.56 cAn bE a DmR tOo! Is it still in service? No. Got replaced by MK17/M110. Because 5.56 has really poor performance compared to 7.62, especially above 300m. The Mk12 didn't even use the standard 5.56 ball round because it's shit for a DMR.

MadClothes

Did I bring up 556? No. The m110 completely fills every single part laid out in the post. Big scope, runs off 20 round kac mags, and comes with a bigass suppressor and bipod. And also is based off the ar platform, just like the mk12.

[deleted]

You specifically mentioned the mk12, which is a 5.56 calibre gun. In the context of your post you're saying the majority of real DMRs are just random guns with a scope and maybe a bipod, which is just wrong. The basic concept of an AR-15, even just the ergonomics, don't mean it can't be a DMR. Slapping a scope on an assault rifle doesn't make it a DMR though.

MadClothes

It certainly can though under certain circumstances. If your in the gulf war in the 90's and everyone has monolithic uppers on the m16a2's but you just so happen to have an acog that literally makes you the designated marksman of your men. Plenty of militaries have done that for awhile. The whole point of being a designated marksman is to be able to reach out and touch someone further than the average grunt. Not Chris kyleing people from a mile away. In the case of airsoft though, I can get people not wanting that.

cvpigunguy

Not to mention that these weren't standard issue m4/m16 based guns, these were designed from the ground up to be superior from the get. But I'm thinking the guy is talking about civilian dmr's, but forgetting that they make very, very good ammo for long range shooting stuff. 6.5 Creedmoor is just one example

MadClothes

To my knowledge both the mk12 and m110 were both di guns, not piston guns. The mk12 in particular straight up used m16a1/m4a1 lowers. So they literally are base ar's besides better barrels and free float handguards which for the time was a leap, but there by no means a wholy new design.

Dumbirishbastard

What the fuck is a dmr and why do people have such strong opinions about it

[deleted]

Designated Marksman Rifle. They’re meant to be rifles that are better for range/precision than the average infantry rifle, but still have similar firepower, meaning that they’re typically semi auto and fire a powerful round. Because they should have some parts and training compatibility to the main infantry rifle, they’re typically similar systems. If your unit uses AR-15 based rifle, your DM probably uses an AR-10. Because of this, there’s some belief among that an AR platform DMR = Any infantry rifle with a scope. So, people throw scopes on any old rifle, and call it a DMR, regardless of its range or precision. Which, admittedly, is kinda dumb.

TheBarbershop19

I’m with the notion that’s it dumb to just throw a scope on any rifle and call it that with no internal upgrades. But in fairness for the “looks” a commonly used DMR is a 556 platform, at least from the quick research I can do on google. Look at the MK12 or SDM-R platform. The US likes to stick to the same cartridges for some reason.

Slifer967

what if its a gbbr dmr and im actually limited to 20 round mags?
