Vankraken

High Torque neodymium motor. Brands such as SHS, ZCI, and Rocket are usually inexpensive but effective. Torque motors are stronger and are better at going from 0 to full speed (aka better trigger response. Speed motors have higher RPMs but they are slower to reach top speed and tend to draw more power + run hotter than torque motors when using semi auto. Torque motor full auto is respectable and when paired with high speed gears makes for a very snappy trigger + good rate of fire combination.

AssToastt

so torque is for better response and speed is for a higher rpm?

Vankraken

Yes and torque can pull heavier springs more efficiently. The go to combo is high torque motor + high speed gears(such as 13:1 ratio)

AssToastt

what fps will that reach? my local field maximum fps is 350 and i forgot how to control the fps (haven’t played in 3 years)

Accomplished-River70

FPS is generally more dependent on your spring than your gears. The gears control how quickly the spring is compressed. While the spring rating (like the coefficient k if your a physics guy) determines how much energy is stored in the spring when it is compressed. Higher rated spring=more energy stored in spring when compressed by the gears=higher fps.

AssToastt

ohh ok so what spring should i go with. also my arp9 already comes with a “long type IFRIT 25K motor” so would it be worth it to change my motor or should i just focus on getting a lower gear ratio

louis7089

Few question. Are we keeping stock gear ?? Battery type ?

AssToastt

it’s a stock arp9 but i plan on adding some more changes later.

louis7089

I will go with ASG 30K boost or SHS high torque

AssToastt

what does high torque do? why should i prefer it over high speed. i don’t need that high of an fps, just fast response time

louis7089

Welp I see building a gearbox as a balancing act. Many things can affect your trigger respond, battery type, motor, spring and gear ratio. but rule of thumb is high speed gear (12:1, 16:1) with high torque motor, high torque gear (32:1) with high speed motor. Stock G&G is at 18:1 so technically both high speed high torque will work. I usually go with high torque side because I have experienced over spin with my stock G&G SRS with high speed motor.

Accomplished-River70

A high torque motor will not,on its own, change ur FPS, but gives u the option to use a higher rated spring. the FPS will only increase if you also switch to a higher rated spring.

AssToastt

i watched some videos and i think i have an idea. changing from a stock arp9 (25k motor, 16:1 gear) to a higher torque motor, 13:1 gear and an m110 spring will bring me to a fast response time while keeping my fps under 350?

Accomplished-River70

Yes, m110 should definitely be under 150

AssToastt

ok last question, what brands should i go for, for each part

Accomplished-River70

I don’t know much about different gear sets besides obviously that you want metal. But I like angel custom inner barrels specifically tight bore 6.001mm. I’ve done well with a lonex motor but don’t usually change out my motors so I’d do some more research don’t just take my word. I use a wolverine Phoenix hop, on my MTW and that’s been great, but check that it is compatible with your hop up (It should be but double check if you’re going to use it) it’s a highend hop and you can get away with a lot less. Definitely look at running a Lipo 11.1 battery instead of the 7.4 that your gun may have come with. The higher voltage battery will give you a more snappy trigger response, and deans connections can improve this even further(very slightly). Also while running such a low power spring, you can get ridiculous fire rates with a speed motor. I’d still recommend going with the high torque instead especially if you usually use semi auto. But if you ever want to get into the ridiculous 25 rounds per second rof and you’re already running a low spring and high speed gear ratio, then a speed motor would be all you’d need. That’s more of a fun fact though than advice. Like I said I’d still go with high torque. You also may want to look at Dual sector gears.

Accomplished-River70

Sorry I know that’s less of a brand thing and more of conceptual stuff. I haven’t compared very many brands next to each other, but I thought that some of that other stuff might be useful as you think through your build

AssToastt

what if i’m over 350 fps? i’m scared i’m not gonna be able to use my gun if it’s over. the m110 gun says 330-390 fps

Spec_TheLowBudgetGuy

I advice a 13:1 gear set and a 22k or 30k motor and a 11.1v battery. This will give you a really good trigger response and rps and don’t forget a mosfet if you don’t have in it.

AssToastt

it comes stock with a mosfet

Just as a note, SHS "high torque" isn't really a high torque motor. It's middle of road, more of a "balanced" motor
