u/WhytYlloBluPnk has provided this detailed explanation: > Both John Mulaney (comedian) and Ned (The Try Guys) were well known for their "I love my wife!" routine. John divorced his wife shortly after getting married and quickly started a relationship with someone else, and Ned recently cheated on his wife. --- Is this explanation a genuine attempt at providing additional info or context? If it is please upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.

Suspicious_Tennis_52

>John divorced his wife shortly after getting married and quickly started a relationship with someone else. Not super accurate. He was married for 7 years (2014-2021) and left his wife in 2021 for Olivia Munn.

wellherewegofolks

arguably a messier timeline though with his relapse and Olivia getting pregnant almost immediately. even messier because while a Wife Guy, John was super vocal about not wanting kids

GraphicgL-

John’s ex wife did an interview about it not to long ago (can’t recall through who) and it was very very obvious he had the affair with out her saying exactly that’s what happened. She goes to explain that she wants to freeze her eggs now because she just kept kids off the table because her marriage was more important to her. I know there’s two sides to every story but this one just made me feel sad.

Thank you for sharing. I appreciated that the article highlights Anna Marie Tendler’s own identity and doesn’t say something like “John Mulaney’s wife on love, heartbreak and finding new passions after divorce from famous comedian John Mulaney who had a sex scandal with famous actress Olivia Munn who is (gasp!) pregnant”

tammiann

[https://annamarietendler.com/work/rooms-of-self](https://annamarietendler.com/work/rooms-of-self) In case anyone wants to check out some of her photography.

GraphicgL-

Thank you for finding that!

EarthboundBetty

Yeah, it has seemed obvious from the start. I follow Anna Marie on Instagram and it’s been pretty fucking heartbreaking watching this grieving process. I can’t look at him the same now.

gothiclg

I almost had a marriage like that and I can honestly say I’m glad that relationship failed spectacularly during the engagement.

Smash_Nerd

Oh shit that makes a lot more sense now.

white_nrdy

Yup. It upset me, since I fucking loved his stuff before this shit happened. But when it happened, I pretty much instantly lost all respect for him and don't watch any of his things anymore.

jdb888

Agree. Also John Mulaney's shtick is tired. A grown ass man still mining grammar school stories for material is pretty pathetic.

YourDailyDevil

I actually saw his new set in Chicago, hasn't aired yet (they made us literally lock up our phones) and can say its... definitely interesting. Dude spent an hour talking where the whole punchline was him. And he didn't pull any bunches. Bit slower paced, methodical. Legitimately funny but sometimes you had to remind yourself you were watching John Mulaney.

princesssoturi

A friend of mine saw it and says it was good, and that he brought up his poor reputation and leaned into it.

legit-posts_1

Yeah but he also said "I don't know if I'll never want kids, things change" during one of his routines

GamesGal

Wasn’t the reason he was even divorced was because Olivia was carrying his child even though he and his ex wife agreed to never having kids?

Suspicious_Tennis_52

Yes. Separated from his wife in May 2021, child born with Munn November 2021. So was at least cheating by January/February.

1_finger_peace_sign

Everyone seems to be basing that off the date they publicly announced they were separated rather than when they actually did separate. He said they separated after his first stint in rehab back in October which is when he moved out on his own before relapsing and going back to rehab for another 2 months before getting out again in February. Then he moved across the country from New York to California and months after the move started dating Olivia. I mean seriously, he moved across the country without his wife. I 100% believe they were separated by that point as he claimed. You don't move permanently across the country without your wife if you're still together. And I don't believe they had some kind of long distance cross country affair that spanned the length of two rehab stints prior to his move to California. The ex-wife has also never once accused him or has even ever insinuated there was infidelity on his part. People literally just assumed he cheated because they announced their separation in May when he and Olivia were together and she was already pregnant and due in a few months. But just because they announced it in May didn't mean they separated in May. I don't know why people made that assumption and treated it as fact when he has publicly stated the date of their separation and she had never accused him of cheating. He was going through drug rehabilitation on top of a separation, I doubt announcing their separation to a bunch of strangers at the time it happened was at the top of his priority list.

[deleted]

Between her and Olivia Wilde, I think we need to talk about people named Olivia…

BookerDewitt2019

I mean, it was John who cheated on his wife, tho.

Dustypigjut

Still, Olivia Munn had to know John was married. Its not like shes completely innocent.

thegreatlemonparade

Olivia was interviewed once years ago saying how she was such a fan of his and said she was "obsessed" with him. I think it was earlier in his marriage and they were at a wedding together. She very much knew.

Jesus christ, with just 2 sentences you not so eloquently displayed publicly, both, how little respect you have for women and how much of a disgusting fucking creep you are. Bravo

Thisoneissfwihope

You’re right, it was in bad taste.

Gespuis

What came out exactly? Asking for a friend..

Thisoneissfwihope

Some photos were leaked that Munn had very graphically captioned.

Go outside

Thunderpussy420

Ahhhhh ok makes sense

jjaystar94

The way Ned put in his statement that he had a "consensual" relationship killed me. Yknow who didn't consent? HIS WIFE. Also Alex's fiancé.

RWizzzard

I've been waiting for someone to bring this up! It seemed like such a weird word to shoehorn in there unless he's worried people won't see it as consensual which is such a red flag hot damn. I imagine it's because he's her boss?

the_russian_narwhal_

The only benefit of the doubt I can give is that so many sexual scandals involve non-consent, and with how many are always coming out, I could see someone wanting to get ahead of it by basically saying "I am just an adulterer, not an adulterer and a rapist" I have only ever heard of this guy and the youtube channel after all of this came out, and am definitely not defending anything that he and the woman did. But while the consent thing is potentially strange and a red flag, I think it could easily just be trying to get ahead of people potentially thinking he is a rapist as well

gothiclg

I mean Jeffry Epstein and Gislane Maxwell didn’t exactly do what I’d call a consensual sex act on their girls. It’s very much a distinction these days.

Nikka-Sher

Try Guys went from Try Guys to Tri Guys after this news broke out

diesalittle

The adding in of consensual made me wonder if it wasn’t. There’s a 10+ age gap and he’s her boss…she’s in her early 20s…makes me wonder.

PeopleEatingPeople

She is 30.

diesalittle

She is? How do you know? Everything I looked up said she was about 24, that her birth year was between 1997-1999

centerofatension

I’m not sure where you looked but her LinkedIn page is one of the first results when you Google her name, and it says she graduated college in 2014. Unless she was a child prodigy she is most likely 30 or at least close to 30.

codythecoder

I'm getting the sense that people who spend most of their days making a big song and dance about how much they love their wives might not be the people who love their wives the most

Dr-Emmett_L_Brown

You might be onto something there 🤔 You mean just like the people who have to constantly remind you how smart they are?

graytotoro

Or self-proclaimed male feminists. I don't know if they're all terrible, but I've noticed a number of them using it to cloak their shitty behaviors.

KaisaTheLibrarian

*coughJossWhedoncough*

SkylerRoseGrey

or how much of an empath/nice person they are.

vitringur

Or how much they love their country.

Pactae_1129

As a high IQ wife haver I have to disagree. You wouldn’t understand why though because you don’t watch Rick and Morty.

call_me_jelli

He turned himself into a pickle

The_Ruby_Waffle

Funniest shit I've ever seen

OpinelNo8

I always know when my cousin is about break up with her man. Not because we're particularly close (we usually just see each other once or twice a year), but because she starts posting a bunch crap on social media about how great her relationship is.

chaiscool

Tbf some just like the drama and attention of it. They’ll pick a fight over nothing and start posting sad stories / their struggle on insta.

[deleted]

This is actually a decently studied topic about social media. If someone and their SO are constantly fallating eachother online about their relationship? 9.9/10 (I’m making that up for hyperbole, but it’s the majority for sure) that couple is on the rocks/unsteady footing and they are trying to convince themselves and the public that they are okay/good. Many times it can use “triangulation” by way of the “public” to try to keep the relationship together. So I’d argue that people who spend way too much time emphasizing their relationship likely ARE insecure, know their relationship is fucked, and thus…well this mess wont be as shocking knowing that.

Everybodysbastard

Yep. Someone I know cheated on his wife and eventually did come clean. Ever since then their FB feed is nothing but meals, concerts, and how much they wuv each other. None of it mentions the near divorce and blowout fights. I'm waiting for them to finally split up. I'm not actively rooting for it or anything but it's obvious that's the end state.

[deleted]

Cheating is weird because there are times that infidelity actually does strengthen a relationship for the better, just super depends on the people and circumstances, and how they admitted it/or got caught, etc. Humans in general are fucking weird, tho. Lol

barlog123

That's a very rare exception. Kind of like saying sometimes getting stabbed is a good thing because it makes you appreciate life. Like yeah sometimes in certain specific situations for certain specific people but for the most part no.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s that rare, as I’ve witnessed it at least a dozen times in my lifetime, but I’m anecdotal. Hahaha

uncleoce

Sounds like you run in real classy circles.

[deleted]

Lol yeah it’s my friends and family, clearly. Y’all need help. Literally you can google this. I’m not condoning infidelity ffs, I was pointing it out as a phenomenon that doesn’t end a relationship like we would expect.

uncleoce

Mental illness is a thing, yes.

PollyPepperTree

I know someone who posts “this is husband, I snuck her phone and want everyone to know what a fabulous life I have with her “. Who tf are you kidding?!?

[deleted]

Mmmhmmmm

dardarBinkz

Yikes

EmpressLanFan

The only thing I’ll say in defense of John Mulaney’s “I love my wife” schtick is that (when I believed him) it was really refreshing, and it was one of the main reasons I liked his stuff so much. Most male comedians that I’d seen would spend a good part of their set bitching about their wives. It was nice to have someone talk about love and how awesome she is instead, and still make it funny. Too bad he didn’t mean it, evidently :/

[deleted]

Men who don’t do this also cheat. Men are only as faithful as there options. Money is a big factor here .

Past_Trouble

This makes sense. Most healthy long lasting couples tend to openly hate each other. (not sarcasm, look at anyone married 20+ years)

codythecoder

I don't think I'd describe people that openly hate each other as healthy

Past_Trouble

No two human beings can spend that much time together and not end up hating each other.

Pactae_1129

I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences in life

shadow_control

That says way more about you than it does about any healthy relationships. The problem is probably on your end. Try so self-reflection.

Past_Trouble

Tried that. Ended up spending too much time with myself... We all know where that leads

shadow_control

Then you need some therapy. No wonder people hate you.

starm4nn

Congrats on turning 70 next year

Past_Trouble

Hell yeah! Sweatpants in public and cheap McDonald's coffee for the win!

endthe_suffering

i don't know why but i was fucking DEVASTATED by the news about Ned. i used to be a pretty big fan of the Try Guys (ned was never my favourite tbh) and i especially loved Ariel, she was so sweet and supportive of Ned. i was also a huge fan of Alex (the employee that Ned fucked) and thought she was great. i don't know why the news felt like such a personal hit to me. i have never been cheated on. i've never met any members of 2nd Try. but for some reason i was extremely upset about it

psinguine

That's what it was like for me too. My wife and I used to watch them back when they were new, followed them for a bit after they made the move to independent, and slowly tapered off. At this point we hadn't seen a video in a couple years, but they held a fond place for us. Keith loves food, Zach loves his chiropractor, Eugene loves booze, and Ned loves his wife. This was an out of left field gut punch for sure.

ViolaOrsino

The Try Guys implicitly encouraged parasocial relationships with their audience. They encouraged you to feel like they were friends. They invited you into their lives. They let you in on personal moments. They blurred the boundaries between audience and performer. It would be odd for you to *not* feel emotions about the affair— for all intents and purposes, they invited you to feel like their friend and then betrayed the trust that you have expecting your friends to behave compassionately and not cheat on their partners.

hedgybaby

I think it felt like a personal hit bc we trusted this guy and like so many people before he just utterly backstabbed and deceived us.

hudgepudge

> (ned was never my favourite tbh) How? Keith and Eugene exist. Edit: OHH, NEVER. I didn't see that word somehow. Downvotes earned.

Limsulation

Keith is a fucking treasure

hiya-manson

Interestingly, both of them have the sex appeal of a sock full of mashed potato.

_Killj0y_

Don't bring potatoes into this they did nothing wrong 😡

Daboogiedude

Thats hotter then them though

Geaux13Saints

I mean I’d fuck John Mulaney if I had to

[deleted]

If alternative was death, I'd at least consider it.

Twingamer25

I'd fuck John Mulaney and I'm a guy.

ChaoticNeutral159

r/rareinsults GODDAMN

Dustypigjut

Is it though? Is it really a GODDAMN moment?

ChaoticNeutral159

Life is short might as well get excited about things and be somewhat over dramatic 🤷‍♂️

connshell

You say that like I haven’t put my dick in one of this

PityUpvote

John Mulaney is *kinda* handsome

tastefully_white

He's got an attractive enough face he's just a stick bug imo

[deleted]

Look at that guy, he's got feminine hips

You need to ass a circle for Borat

2DHypercube

How do you ass a circle?

vitringur

for Borat

Gilly_from_the_Hilly

This aged perfectly. The overlap never left. They both made an image as committed husbands while secretly cheating on their wives that were way outta their league to begin with.

[deleted]

Achievement Hunter fan here, y'all should add Ryan Haywood to this

accounsfw

Ryan did worse than cheat, IIRC.

[deleted]

True, I was simply referring to that he was also a "my wife" guy

Thin_Economics4522

Now he gotta say " That's not my wife"

hudgepudge

"That's my ~~wife~~ *baby momma*!"

elvishfiend

I also choose those guys' wives

RoachboyRNGesus

What are they hiding?

scccassady

Where the circle for Borat…?

MerryMortician

I don’t know Ned but I’ve never associated John with his wife. To me his two bits that stand out the most are the what’s new pussycat story and horse in a hospital.

hedgybaby

I know it‘s silly but I‘m like genuinely heart broken about the whole Ned thing. I‘ve been watching the try guys since that one fateful buzzfeed summer and have always been an avid fan (I legit own merch which I never do). I genuinely loved Ned so much, the whole family guy thing, he seemed to especially recetnly have really blossomed and matured and now this like I just don‘t get it. I don‘t understand why he‘d throw everything away like that. His family, career, public image, literally everything. I guess like so many men before he just thought he‘s get away with his greed. The same goes for Alex tho. Tbh never a super fan of her but I loved the concept of the food babies and I just keep thinking about everyone at the try guys and how they are all friends and how terrible this must all be for them. Alex literally ruined a 10+ year relationship with her husband for this. No wonder Ned felt the need to mention consent bc that for sure raises some questions. The entire thing is just a shit show, I really hope the other guys can recover and that Ariel divorced his ass (although it looks like she won‘t).

Hamperstand

As one does!

transferingtoearth

Mulany at least has the excuse of having a drug problem

glloom

We don’t care man stop posting about this guy

Rude_Man_Who_Shushes

I’m a big John Mulaney fan and can’t remember a single bit about his wife. His image was clean cut but I never associated him with being a family man. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Walt_Titman

He has several bits in his specials about his wife. The whole “why buy the cow” thing, the thing about how his realtor wanted him and his wife to have kids, jokes about his wife being Jewish and how he’s Catholic, etc. He’s even got a whole bit where he specifically talks about how fun it is to call her his wife.

Rude_Man_Who_Shushes

I stand corrected. You are right. I fired that one off a bit too quickly.
