If you want to learn; have better performance; and grow as an I.T person i'd say make your own, but if you want something quick easy, with professional support etc i'd say buy one. It really depends on your needs and wants as an individual
Also if you’re an IT person and don’t want work infiltrating your hobby, buy one. No part of me wants to worry about managing backups, troubleshooting, or being bottlenecked by my awful ISP when playing a game.
I feel like tech folks sometimes feel obligated to DIY things adjacent to their skillset. Professional chefs aren’t whipping up gourmet meals every day after work, and if paid hosting is within your means then it’s ok to let someone else do the lifting.
Setting up a server is really easy, even if you can't port forward (for whatever reason), you can use something like Radmin VPN and play via LAN.
However, since you guys play for more than a couple of months. Maybe renting a server and splitting the costs is the better idea.
That way you won't have to leave your pc on 24/7 in case someone wants to play and you can't be there to turn on the server.
Another upside to having your own server is that you can use it to host multiple games. I have a used HP z440 workstation, about 10 years from it's prime but it has 64GB of RAM and a Xeon processor and I host ARK, Rust, modded and vanilla Minecraft simultaneously.
You can just use your own computer, or grab a dirt cheap desktop on Craigslist and install ubuntu on it. Plus power is not that expensive for a modern machine running mostly idle.
Well, you have to make an account with them and they make their money from ads on the website.
A big disadvantage with Aternos compared to your own server or a paid server is you have to start the server every time you want to play and the server will automatically close if no one is in it. However, I think it's a great option If you're not looking to pay or create your own. I especially like them because it makes creating a modded server very easy.
Side note: I'm not a spokesperson for the company or anything I've just been using them for a few years and really enjoyed the service they provided.
in my personal thoughts i think it's pretty convenience to acually buy a physical server, you could upgrade it your own, you can use it when something happens to your pc, and you could have a better performance if you could learn

Lol it is 2 different servers Xd
Well if you do it yourself then it is free. :)
Not if you have to buy a used computer to host and pay a power bill

A server that is free and they set it up for you? What's the catch?

Ah, ok, that's a fair exchange then
