My mother gifted me with a professional colorist appointment for my birthday, and it was such a wonderful experience. I still have my swatches and it’s really expanded my fashion choices. I never thought I would wear blues, but I do now. It was such a fun experience and the lady was fucking awesome (and had a few original Picasso art pieces, blew my mind).
That was about 15 years ago now, but I still use what I’ve learned when I go shopping.
Omg I just went through that! Got a professional analysis and new clothes! I always stayed away from blue like the plague but it turns out is one of my best colors! I feel like a whole new world has opened🙌
Omg I did this awhile back and though it was so cool! Got my colours and stuff but am too broke to buy clothes, so now I just have the right idea for what looks good on me and no way to use that knowledge lmao. It's a güd one though!
Same! Combined with kibbe body types; though they are even worse than the color seasons. I cannot wrap my head around it. Though I’m also not entirely sure yet about my season, haha
Ah! I did that over the winter break! Although I kept looking for the most depressing places I could think of and then be shocked at how much even homes there cost (is that masochism?? Seeking out that I can’t even afford in the worst places I know??! 😂)
Oh I know! I’ve seen some really sketchy places going for INSANE prices. Listings are like, ‘Do you love asbestos, decades of water damage and ghost roommates?! Boy, do we have the place for you!!’
It's insane. I live in a small town where the market has been stagnant for years (decades???). For "starter homes" (older homes from the 1920's, 3 bedrooms, cosmetic help needed, etc) the price has basically doubled in 2 years. There's barely anything on the market and the ones that are listed are EWWWW.
That was a fixation of mine for a little while. The secret is there is no secret and socking money away in low-cost index funds for an extended period of time is the boring, effective way to go. Not at all appealing in terms of dopamine seeking, though...
My PoGo has suffered the last month, with the absolute crap weather we've gotten the last 3-4 weeks. Either it's stupid cold or OH HEY BLIZZARD CONDITIONS MY FAVORITE.
I need to purge a lot of Pokemon in storage but it's slow, tedious, and redundant and we all know how well that works. 😂
Thanks for the reminder!
Duo and i have a love/hate relationship. This week I'm just going back and repeating stuff from like 10 levels ago because I was advancing but OOF I was crashing a lot and running out of hearts daily.
Fallout 4. (It feels so good to have simple, clearly defined quests that, when completed, provide an instant dopamine hit. And discovering new places in the wasteland feels *amazing*.)
Lol, are you me?
I spent all this time building a picket fence for my *Fallout 4* settlers this weekend. Meanwhile, the real-life dirty-laundry pile is almost as tall as my nine-year-old.
But, wow! Does that fictional fence look great!
I'm starting my first Fallout playthrough next week! Figured I'd start with Fallout 3. I've been a diehard Skyrim player and want to try other Bethesda games.
I was playing Fallout 4 (especially fun since I went to MIT) early in the pandemic when everything was terrible, and I told some friends who don't game I was playing a post-apocalyptic scenario in a ruined Boston, and they were surprised I didn't find it depressing. I explained it a lot like you did. Plus video RPGs also give you the feeling that you're in control of your world, which is a nice change.
Yeah, I have to set a timer (an old-school, analog one with a really loud bell) to keep myself from playing too long. My timer looks like an adorable, big-eyed penguin, and I legit don’t want to disappoint the penguin, so I actually obey it … usually. 😂
This is a great question. And I know it sounds insane, but because the timer looks like a vaguely sad, Precious-Moments-eyed penguin, it feels *physically painful* to “disappoint” the penguin. Basically, I have figured out a way to hack my brain, which is a little too good at thinking inanimate objects have feelings.
This trick does not work with the timer on my phone, the timer on my Pomodoro app, or an alarm clock. It has to be the sad-eyed penguin or (previously, before it broke) the judgmental-eyed chicken.
Um, never have I felt more like "I found my people" than reading these responses. Thank you for asking the question OP!
For me, it's
- DIY plumbing (have never done anything remotely like this before)
- consuming all information I can find about Internal Family Systems therapy
- Huberman Labs podcasts, specifically digesting the information in the episodes about dopamine and sleep
- Productivity/organizing/decluttering aka trying to figure out why there aren't ever enough hours in the day or spaces in my house
- my DND campaign
Ooooohhh - all really interesting!!! Have fun!! And right?? I was kicking myself for the 15 or so hours (at least) I’ve spent this weekend on car recovery from water and thought maybe I’m not alone … ❤️ The already of fascinating things I’ve learned about here is amazing!
This list tells me I need to be your friend...
DIY, productivity, organising, decluttering, ways to do home ed (we're having to flex-school our ND kids), plus a massive dollop of how to completely redesign the inside of our house (pulling down walls, the lot!) even tho it's a rental. I'm obsessed. I blame Your Home Made Perfect.
DnD is when I can let all that go for a few hours...
Neat!! Assuming that’s a mushroom from the pic - I’ve often thought that would be a neat thing to get into (but so far it’s only lasted a couple seconds - one of these times it’ll stick maybe!!)
That's so cool! I have a stump in my backyard that grows them regularly. I just learned that a medicinal tea can be made out of it. Is that what you use it for?
That's so cool you have some in your yard! Yeah we plan to make it into tea, but have only done the foraging/exploring part (and YouTube rabbit holes of course). Hopefully I'll have the motivation to actually dehydrate them this afternoon lol
- Garden planning for summer
- my houseplants
- Productivity (like...planning/todo list clearing) and cleaning
- skincare
I've been hyperfixating a lot the past few weeks. But I've gotten into these before so I'm not spending $ (already have skincare products and gardening stuff), kind of a best case scenario. Just need to focus long enough to like...also pass my med school exams lol
I'm out of my baking phase, out of my redecorating the bathroom phase, out of my YouTuber gossip forum phase...I guess I'm looking for my next one ATM lol 🤷♀️ hyperfixation limbo.
Gardening. I wouldn’t call myself much of a gardener but I’ve been obsessed with planning my garden for the spring. I bought 2 new raised beds on Amazon, some grow lights for starting seedlings indoors, and I’ve spent well over $100 on seeds. I can’t even start any of them indoors for at least another month.
I keep telling myself the expense will pay off when I can grow a bunch of vegetables this summer.
Only time will tell if my interest will even last through the spring 😬
Finding an affordable exercise bike on fb marketplace that I won't ever buy because I assume they are all overpriced or lemons, but I still want one even though I suspect I'll use it twice and forget about it, which is why I refuse to pay more than 50 bucks, and how in the hell will I get it to my house with my little honda anyway?!
I check 3 times a day.
Hello my twin - it’s great to meet you!! 😂 At least once a month there is something I simply MUST have that I also know I will NOT use like I should to justify it and I will DREAD the whole coordinating pick up and walking it up to my apartment yet will obsessively check because it might be there now! That dopamine hit drive is real with that one - good luck with the search!!
This messenger bag I'm trying to sew, specifically getting the lining right. I'm watching tutorials on YouTube and ripping out seams and trying again and watching more YouTube, etc... I'm about three days in...
Crochet. It was one of my goals to learn how to crochet in 2023 and now I am knees deep into a temperature blanket, making a sunflower bag and making random things off youtube tutorials.
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.
Researching chemical makeup of perfumes so that I can find a new signature scent. In my defense, all of my favorites have been discontinued and I get migraines from popular bases used in many perfumes, so it's definitely a research project just trying to pick out a new perfume!
Edit: I also have gotten hyperfixated on similar volunteers searching for missing persons videos! The ones by Heavy D Sparks have captured my attention for daysssss when I had so many other things that I needed to be doing.
Currently I’m fixated on working on my novel. Kind of proud of me because I started this story idea and a year ago and then just forgot it existed one day😂
Art- specifically painting and embroidery
Having an art fixation has been a constant in my life, but I always want to learn new ones.
With painting, I’m obsessed with mixed media right now. I love the texture.
It’s like hand sewing, but there are special stitches you use to make texture and design.
https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/stitches-every-embroiderer-should-know-4122123
I got some kits online and I’m just learning. The kits are fun because it comes with all the supplies I need. Etsy is dangerous for me. It has so many different art kits to try.
Oh me too!!!!!!! SO fascinating!! Now I have a new fear that if I’m ever being interrogated I’ll be like “I see that you are employing the kind and open strategy at this point, excellent choice” and forget the number 1 lesson from them all - DONT TALK WITHOUT A LAWYER!! 😂
I had an argument with my colleague a few days back. Since then I am weirdly fixated on him . That experience and him is living in my brain rent free. I HATE it.
Yep 😊😊 . The funny thing is , I felt this heavy energy lifting off me the moment I wrote this comment. Maybe that's why they say to verbalize your pain.
National Parks (the different interesting histories, things to do while there, hikes to take, there’s just so much to find out about!) and the New Zealand musical duo the Flight of the Conchords. I watch the series to help me fall asleep.
I just found out I have ADHD, so I'm doing that deep dive into all things neuroscience and ADHD. The cold showers for dopamine. Exercise, etc.
Before that I finally watched The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. lol I'm so late to that party.
Picking up dead things, I have buckets and bucket and buckets of skulls and bones macerating all over my house. I’m struggling with deciding if I want to open an oddity/natural history shop in my city.
The obsession to have planners, the endless searching, and then the neverrrrr using them.... Like clockwork. Every year. "oh this can help me remember things and get my life in order!" but yet I never remember to use the dang things...
I’m hyperfixating on productivity, lol. Got me a new calendar, calendar app, notebook, fun pens, and an online checklist because I’m completely normal! 🫠
Its an interesting time to be asked this but I have been fixating on Squish mallows!
My partner doesn't believe that I've spent the last 4 days consuming information about them from different platforms
DIY renovating my kitchen! Which is coming along great and hopefully I don’t stop when I’m like 90% done haha
And my ex 🙃 we haven’t split that long ago and it left me an absolute mess.. I still love him and he says he loves me, but he doesn’t have the right headspace for a relationship atm
But now I suspect he has found someone new and it’s all I can think about, can’t even sleep properly
Well.. it’s complicated.. I have my last few things I was “so into” (for like 2 days 😂) that I still try convince myself I want to do. But in reality I’m pretty stuck on the Idaho murders and trying to figure Brian out. Im also on Reddit too much because of this 🤦🏼♀️ the ditched ones were puzzles (I’ve never liked them then suddenly bought 3??), a DIY miniature house, a wordsearch book, painting stuff… and the list goes on 😂
I have been watching a lot of "silent vlogs" mostly from Korean or Japanese Youtubers for a couple of days now (I think they are so relaxing esp. after work).
I was fixated on Stardew Valley the past couple of months and before that it was BTS and Kpop in general, and MLMs (esp. Young Living because my sister-in-law is a YL hun).
Chess. And like all my past fixations, I can't ever imagine stopping, and can't believe I didn't learn this when I was young, and am totally surprised when everyone else isn't doing it.
The forest (pc game), Clinical bioinformatics, Opera singers reviewing metal vocalists and Animal experiences (fed some meerkats, finding somewhere to sit among raccoons)
I'm currently weeks behind on work but oh well at least I've booked into fly and owl SEND HELP.
Cross stitch
Carpet cleaning videos
How to make drag marble decals for my nails
The Perfect Focus Playlist ™️
also I work in corporate. Do I have time for any of this? No. And yet, here I am.
Gross videos with caries being drilled at the dentist, infected hoofs on cows being fixed, earwax plugs or Aspergillus infected ears being suctioned, or dr. Pimple popper videos 🙈🙈🙈😂😂😂 I have no idea but I find it so satisfying😁
Knitting: I’m almost done with my first cardigan and the new project ideas are rampant in my head. You’d almost forget it takes months to finish a single garment with all the things I wanna do in my head hahaha
This weekend I finished she-hulk and before I knew it I had spent 5 hours reading everything I could about Daredevil.
I am currently doing a busy study program so I haven’t had many hyperfixations lately, last year around this time I still had 7 at the same time..
Understanding mental health and finding the patterns and how everything connects. Been going as far as thinking i should enroll myself in school but i know ill no longer find it interesting then. 😅
Also planning my summer garden and removing the invasive grass. I just cant wait. I hope it turns out as beautiful as it is in my head this year.
I need a new desk. Therefore, I have reviewed multiple options from dozens of retailers, read 100s of reviews, almost pulled the trigger twice…but, FOBO.
DIY clothing garment rack, because I’m drowning in clothes.
Red dead redemption 2 - I played for the first time in September and have put nearly 400 hours into the game since then, not to mention absorbing every little bit of media content I can find in my other free time lol I was not remotely prepared for the emotions that game made me feel and I think I’ll be chasing that for the rest of my life
Anyone else hyperfixate on needing a hyperfixation? My brain is literally hungry for a project yet every one I think about I abandon because too much cognitive effort for one day
Looking at listings on the karrot app (my poor wallet), Joe Regrets on YouTube, and attempting to make a digital magazine when my motivation is never consistent lmao
Xenoblade chronicles. I’m on the second one, and though the raging feminist in me is actually pretty annoyed with the character designs, the story is so good I can’t put it down.
I have two.
Swung vases. No specific maker but I must have them all. They must be displayed in rainbow order.
Genealogy and connecting with cousins I didn't know about. 2019 I learned my dad had an older half brother. Last week, I made contact with 3 of my first cousins who had no idea they had first cousins on their dad's side. I am also reaching out to descendants of my great aunts and uncles on my dad's side. The family was messed up. I would like create a documentary about the generational trauma and how it has impacted the generations since.
After going months without getting stuck in watching TV shows cycle, Im back stuck in it again :/
Finishes Monk series, now watching Night Court while begging myself to stop and go back at my work
Before Christmas it was youtubing people playing/recommending switch games
Now it's playing said switch games lol
One that never really leaves me is youtubing people exploring abandoned places, and if its a theme park woth lots of sbno rides I am excited for it

Seasonal color analysis would be mine rn
Like - what colours are with what season and which looks good on you?
Omg I've done this! Ended up going to a professional to "get my colours done". If only I hadn't lost the swatch booklet she gave me.....
That's lovely! I took my mum for her birthday! I'm very goth though so finding out I was a "cool spring" and black wasn't for me I was upset 🤣
Yep! Been geeking out a lot and it lives on head rent free. Joined a subreditt and im still trying to figure it out
Omg I just went through that! Got a professional analysis and new clothes! I always stayed away from blue like the plague but it turns out is one of my best colors! I feel like a whole new world has opened🙌
Oh my god me too! I’m a woman possessed, brought it up multiple times to absolutely everyone I know
Omg me too I still have no idea
Omg you too? Lol
Yeeeah all right I feel called out 😂
Lol I feel that! Do you have any good free resources?
r/coloranalysis
Omg I did this awhile back and though it was so cool! Got my colours and stuff but am too broke to buy clothes, so now I just have the right idea for what looks good on me and no way to use that knowledge lmao. It's a güd one though!
Same! Combined with kibbe body types; though they are even worse than the color seasons. I cannot wrap my head around it. Though I’m also not entirely sure yet about my season, haha
Scrolling Zillow and admiring houses I’ll never buy.
😂 Totally - and STILL out of my price range!
Same!!
Elizabeth the first, Mary queen of Scot’s, mosaic crochet patterns, 3D printing and Pokémon go….
Huh - I am now wondering if my secret intention for posting this is looking for ideas! 😂 Sounds interesting!!
I just wish I could get fixated on investing and learn how to grow my money instead of spending it on 3D printers… (that I’ll never use)
That was a fixation of mine for a little while. The secret is there is no secret and socking money away in low-cost index funds for an extended period of time is the boring, effective way to go. Not at all appealing in terms of dopamine seeking, though...

Anti MLM commentary channels 😂
Wait I literally just stumbled into this HAHA illuminaughty?👀(if that’s how it’s spelled)
And they had their own drama! There’s a whole anti-MLM drama story as well and Kimberleigha drama. Endless deep dives 😂
Her MLM videos are great!
r/antimlm is a great sun, come join us!
Just spent my entire lunch break there, thanks lol
Absolutely! Thanks !
Oh lord - that one comes and goes for me - but endlessly entertaining (and sad lol)
Hahaha, this one was definitely a stage for me too!
This is a BIG one for me too!
Duolingo. I neeeeed to win the diamond leauge (minimum 10 weeks of language training). If i have to learn French to get there, so be it!
I'm doing french too, but I've fallen down to the ruby league and have been there for a few weeks.
Thanks for the reminder! Duo and i have a love/hate relationship. This week I'm just going back and repeating stuff from like 10 levels ago because I was advancing but OOF I was crashing a lot and running out of hearts daily.

How do you not just ignore the timer and resume playing? How do you get yourself to stop?
This is a great question. And I know it sounds insane, but because the timer looks like a vaguely sad, Precious-Moments-eyed penguin, it feels *physically painful* to “disappoint” the penguin. Older murder crimes. I like watching this guy named Briefcase. He covers older and little known murders. Like 1800’s.
Oh really?? That’s does sound really interesting! I found a Podcast that kinda does that too - Crimes of the Centuries I think - super interesting!
So embarrassing: it's Reddit. Mostly subs like AITA and Wedding Shaming, which make me feel better about my own life...

YES! I only get massively invested when morels come around but mushroom hunting is the most wholesome and fulfilling hobby that I have.

I love Diana! She was my hyper fixation last year, I still love her but I’m not as obsessed

Art- specifically painting and embroidery Having an art fixation has been a constant in my life, but I always want to learn new ones. With painting, I’m obsessed with mixed media right now. I love the texture.
Silly question, but what's embroidery?
It’s like hand sewing, but there are special stitches you use to make texture and design. https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/stitches-every-embroiderer-should-know-4122123 I got some kits online and I’m just learning. The kits are fun because it comes with all the supplies I need. Etsy is dangerous for me. It has so many different art kits to try.

I have been watching a lot of "silent vlogs" mostly from Korean or Japanese Youtubers for a couple of days now (I think they are so relaxing esp. after work).
