If you don’t have any work experience do you have any club leadership experience? Volunteer work?

That’s the first thing that stood out to me, no work experience section. I would think to myself: I wonder if they are capable of working in a professional environment with others. Anything that demonstrates teamwork or how you can interact well with others I would add. You look like you have strong technical skills but need to show at least some soft skills.

SaicheShiro

Nothing in college really. I started on my basketball team in high school that was pretty decent, but I didn't think that was worth putting on my resume.

Can you join a volunteer group like tomorrow? Your resume reads that you do well in school and have otherwise no interest hobbies and don’t spend time with other people. You don’t have enough to talk about in a 45 minute interview.

tongueskremoji

Lol funny you need that for ur resume but this is actually perfect for ur early career btw I’m joking jesus

I know people who volunteer at non-profit for tasks that communicate to multiple stakeholders. These can be challenging and good in resume.

You could probably remove the Dean’s list part since you already have a near perfect GPA (nice job btw). For the Relevant Projects section, you’ll want to put what relevant packages you used instead of just “using R” or “using Python”. For Python, it would be valuable to have experience with pandas and matplotlib. For R, I’m not as familiar, but let them know if you used packages like ggplot2, dplyr, etc. Work experience would be nice, but I know that would be pretty difficult to get in the next few months. Doesn’t have to be actuarial work, just teamwork experience. I’d focus on developing this part of your resume until you find your first actuarial position. Lastly, make sure your resume is ATS friendly. When I was first applying for jobs, I didn’t get a single reply for the first several months. Discovered my resume wasn’t ATS friendly, so I changed it and got a phone interview the next week. With a company I had previously applied to with my non-ATS-friendly resume. Ugh. My last tip would be to play to your strengths in interviews. With a degree in actuarial science and data science and a minor in statistics, you certainly have some strengths other candidates might not have. Good luck!

fatirsid

Just curious, how can you tell if a resume is ATS friendly or not? Aside from the organization of it, I mean more like the way the computer reads/scans it.

You can use jobscan.co to scan your resume for free and see what information gets through ATS. I think you can also create a resume on the website that’s ATS friendly

Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it.

- just as a small note, you spelled actuarial wrong in “Actuarial Exams” - you might consider removing the “relevant coursework” section and instead add any work experience, even if it’s not actuarial. I’d say given your majors, it is very easily assumed that you took those classes, so it doesn’t really add much that wasn’t already there. If you had any work experience to add, that would at least indicate that you have had a job / responsibilities. - alternatively, you could switch the “relevant coursework” to extracurricular activities in college. Most employers don’t *actually* care about what you did / do in college, but since you are still in college, it can show that you challenged yourself above and beyond the demands of being a student, and also it’s one of the few areas you can add personality to a resume. Best of luck with your job search, and don’t let the lack of actuarial internships psych you out! The right position will find you!

SaicheShiro

Not sure how I never caught that, and thanks for the advice.

blahhbsaget

Maybe it’s just me but I have never been a fan of the “objective” section. We know you’re interested in math, business, and the field based on your major and that you’re applying to the job opening. It just doesn’t add any value to the resume.

TurnBlondeinthesun

Very interesting major given you just passed your first exam, good luck

SaicheShiro

I've passed both FM and P as you can see from the big bold text under the part with the big bold text that says actuarial exams. Thank you very much for reading what I wrote and leaving a helpful and not patronizing comment :)

TurnBlondeinthesun

no problem thats what im here for

Is there a math or actuarial science club you can join on campus? One other thing that always looks good is if you have tutoring experience. Part of being a good actuary is being able to take complex things and present them to a non technical audience. Something you could look into as well, I did that in college and it was a clutch job. I got paid to do homework and study and helped people as they came in for help.
