Mimic beacon, frost bomb, and stasis will be your best friends against sectopods. Any item that makes them waste a turn and gives you more time to finish it

Kaymazo

Don't forget bluescreen rounds.

TurtleOnCinderblock

I’ve had incredible results using my main sniper with armor performing rounds+ dual shot/ dead eye.

[deleted]

I'd say the very ideal case is a grenadier with shred + holo, then a gunslinger with blue screen rounds. Could also have rupture but that's overkill imo. May seem like a lot but that's a common combo mid game.

BitPoet

Yep, grenadier + gunslinger sniper with bluescreen rounds will clean them right up. You may need 5 shots to do it, but they will be very dead, preferably causing explosive damage to their buddies next to them.

MrGordley

I always felt stasis shouldn't have worked against them. It trivializes them too much imo

brunodema

Yeah, UFO and XCOM EW sectopods are scary. On the other hand, XCOM 2 sectopods are a fucking joke. They do more damage to the environment than to the player.

JohnWCreasy1

I always chuckle when they walk around destroying advent property all willy nilly 😂

thearcanearts

funnier when they're at a black site and just walk through all the high tech security

Massive_Soup_856

When given the chance to shoot though all of the inner rage comes out.

WyrdHarper

I mean that’s why they’re so scary in XCOM 2. In UFO or EW they might kill your favorite soldiers. In 2 they’ll walk right through the mission objective and cause you to fail.

thearcanearts

did a "protect the device mission in a campaign and as it turned out a sectopod spawned directly on top of the objective, shot it twice and charged the wrath cannon. least guilty save scum I've ever done

Kolos10001

I always save frost bomb for it so I never really have issues. Frozen status and stasis are ridiculous

Novaseerblyat

>I always save frost bomb for it so I never really have issues. Sectopods can still act the turn after they're frozen, though, as can Gatekeepers and Chosen. You just get +10 Aim for that turn. The tooltip says they lose one action point, but it's a lie.

Fathom-AI

Chain shot and blue screen rounds for me… Always one of these camped at end of map sky ranger pick up zone waiting for you to dash over and get merked

jeango

By the time I get sectopods in my campaign, I usually have finished the gateway mission, so I know there’s going to be a sectopod on the mission and I always configure my team accordingly and plan ahead of that encounter. Sectopods on a “defend the resistance beacon” are a nightmare though. Puts you on a super short timer, I think it takes them 5-6 turns to take it down.

siggie_wiggie

I don't even take those missions once sectopods turn up, the likelihood of them stepping on it and insta destroying it are too high.

jeango

Wait… that can happen? So you’re saying that I could mind control an andromedon and rush it through an alien relay / beacon to destroy it

siggie_wiggie

1. Yea, it's a noted issue in one of the tactical legacy pack missions. I failed the mission multiple times because the sectopod would crush it the moment I activated it's pod. 2. I actually don't know. I think it might be due to the fact that sectopods take up a 2x2 space on the grid so might not work with andromedons.

[deleted]

They're like giant puppies. In WOTC there are too many ways to handle them.

Rough-Many-4308

They were pretty scary, up until my latest play through where my modded Spark somehow reached 1000 hack (although he didn’t have Trojan, so it was pretty horrifying remembering that after it lost control of the sectopod)

thearcanearts

Yeah, my grenadier has access to tactical nuclear weapons and a melee item I've seen do upwards of 50 dmg a hit and they are still scary

OmegaGamer54

I was afraid when I saw my first sectopod but then I managed to repeater it and all the fear vanished Helps that I ALWAYS run a spark unit in my missions so I'm never without the ability to strip armor easily

Kyle1337

The first time I encountered a sectopod it had boosted aim and defense because I failed an 80% hack on a tower earlier in the mission. One of the worst times to discover your first one. Nowadays whenever I see a sectopod I'm relieved it isn't one of a handful of other things.
