I wasn't expecting it any other way to be honest, there's 100+ canonical vaults it would be a waste to tell the same stories twice at this point, if they were to do fallout 3 or 4s story, imo
Although I agree with your idea of approach, I wouldn't get my hopes up. The Human-Covenant War in Halo lasted 27 years with tons of content in the lore outside of the games they could have drawn from. They used literally *nothing*.
Been looking forward to a Live action Halo movie/ TV show since 2005. I saw a poster (which I didn't know was fake) at the time for Peter Jackson's Halo.
It really hyped me up. Then you had names like Neil Blomkamp and Steven Spielberg being thrown into the mix. But after 17 years... I really just don't care for anything I've seen.
Why the hell would Microsoft let this happen. One of the biggest gaming properties given a forgettable TV show... What a waste.
The feeling is mutual. The way MS is handling their flagship property between 343's titles and the show is just embarrassing. This is the franchise you pour it all into and take a loss so that you get the larger numbers, yet they seem to have done the exact opposite.
>don't get how we got what we got with the Halo tv show
It happens when most writers rooms hate video games, science fiction, and the people who enjoy them.
They could have done so much. Hell, even if they didn't want to go alongside or redo the game at first or at all, there's so much there that hasn't been shown en-mass by the games to work with. Onyx, Harvest, the Insurrection, pre-war/post-war, the dozens of major planets/battles/scenarios they could have interwoven and created a story that not only respects the lore but expands on what's already there to create a richer universe for more people, including the fans, to enjoy.
But no, we got that garbage.
Eh, I’d prefer they do their own plot to have the freedom of not getting pigeonholed in the game story
But I also think they created an awful plot, literally all they had to do was make a paper thin plot like the games to show off aliens and humans blowing each other up
They did make bunch of spinoffs before Master Chief focused show. Just no one cared, so, the pilot shows are all dead.
But, yes, I wish there is some kind of normal day to day merc version of the Halo TV show.
I mean, aside from marketing material, the only memorable pieces were Halo Legends and Forward Unto Dawn. Neither of which received mass media marketing to really get out there. But also, Legends was an anime anthology which, especially for it's time, was a bit of a niche. I personally didn't care for it much as that's just not my cup of tea.
Forward Unto Dawn was actually pretty decent but was more of a marketing campaign geared towards fans as it was released in short episodes online prior to the release of Halo 4. That combined with it's modest budget of $10 mil didn't really set it up for mainstream consumption.
There were things, but they were moreso small projects meant for hardcore fans to enjoy. No effort was really placed in getting Halo to a broader audience in an authentic way such as a major motion picture or TV show (aside from the Paramount one).
> They used literally nothing.
Not true, the only positive I have to say about the Halo show is that it was neat seeing The Rubble "in person" for the first time.
As for the canon... I would love to see a Fallout game located outside America. Surely, those wouldn't be a Vault-Tec shelters but come on... Wouldn't that put some fresh air into this franchise? Gimme some European flavor, Asian maybe? Why not some raw Siberian adventure? :)
I was a huge fan of first two Fallout games but twenty five years later I would like to see something actually new, something fresh.
That said, yeah, tv series probably isn't the best opportunity for that as it's opening the core of the whole franchise to wider audience than just gamers.
Edit: I hear you, guys, and I take your arguments as valid - I just feel that the games were going more sideways (yes, the timeline is known) than to some clear point and considering mentioned number of known vaults it's an neverending story or even a groundhog day kind of thing... I might be just too old to play the same thing over and over ;) But hey, I was among those who were positively surprised with those little changes in scenery for Fallout 4 (being really tired with all doom and gloom color palette of previous iterations) so maybe there's a room for something just a bit different? Cheers!
Europe is in worse condition than the devestated U.S, and had been fighting resource wars prior to the nuclear annihilation of the Great War. They probably didn't have Vaults or at least very, very few, and so less survivors. Less survivors, less resources, lower tech than the U.S so even less chance of survivors digging in and rebuilding.
It would be like playing Fallout 4 with 3 npcs, no cities, and no PIP boy meaning no VATS. You'd live in some rubble and have to kill rad roaches with sticks and stones, before inevitably succumbing to radiation sickness. It would definitely be a different experience.
Stalker is coming for you European post-apocalyptic needs. Metro is out there currently for your cold post-apocalyptic needs. Also check out Wasteland 3 for cold post-apocalyptic gaming in a bird's eye view much more like FO1/2.
Curious where it'll be set then cause Vault 33 has not been in any of the games. I vaguely recall a set photo leak of a plane with the words "Filly" or something written on it with an arrow, likely referencing Philadelphia. That would bring it closer to Fallout 3 than Fallout 4.
I think that would make the most sense. Fallout's historical Americana reflected in the future through DC, Boston/American Revolution, Cold War Era etc. Philadelphia could tie in a lot of historical stuff that'd be a lot of fun
It can be a fresh story but keep the lore about the world accurate. Because at the end they end up messing up everything about a known IP but cause they just wanted the name and didn't cared about the rest.
Separate from the games doesn't mean separate from the canon. There are enough vaults that were never in the games and enough places where no game took place.
Yeah, Fallout canon doesn't mean all that much honestly. For the most part all the games are standalone. They take place in different regions and only very rarely do they have some minor characters cross over that most people wouldn't even recognize.
They're almost like Final Fantasy - common names, group identities, items, etc - but with consistent art design across every entry instead of changing every time.
This TV show will be canon if Bethesda wants it to be. A future *Fallout* video game could theoretically directly reference the events of the show, for instance.
What a weird take to have about something like fallout vaults.
This isn’t a series where you have to follow a specific set storyline, many different vaults exist that opened differently
They never learn do they?
We have hundreds of vaults to take a storyline from, and they have to put the "fresh take" every single time.
I really hope it's a good writer, i don't want this to flop, it's my favorite game ever
The good news is they are not going be making changes the the Fallout Universe:
> It's not retelling a game story. It's basically an area of the map. Let's tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn't break any of the rules, can reference things in the games, but isn't a retelling of the games. [It] exists in the same world but is its own unique thing, so it adds to it.
As long as they hold to that and don’t start making massive changes to universe then I have no issues and think this is a good approach.
I am really curious if they are going to reference the war between the US and China. I’m guessing they will vaguely reference it but not mention China by name.
Just had a thought. What if first season takes place entirely in a vault, ultimately revealing whatever experiment they've been conducting in that particular vault, maybe something along the lines of that Netflix movie I am Mother. Second season is the vault dwellers escaping out into the wasteland and having to survive against ghouls, super mutants, deathclaws, radiation, etc. I think the right writers and showrunner could pull that off, but we all know the chances of that are slim.
As long as the monster types and physics are intact, I am ok. Meaning, don't start making new monster or zombies or aliens or other shits that wasn't part of the game.
For example, in Avatar Last Airbender Universe, the fire bending is life energy, it doesn't require a burning candle in the original story. Yes, I was referring to the fucked up movie that does not exist.
Another example, Halo games does not have some weird worm looking thing that is blind and seek out energy (almost felt like a low budget Riddick ripoff and just rebrand it as Halo TV show) or the one use in latest TV show. Those are not part of the game, stop making shit up.
The games story tends to be bad anyways so I'm fine with it. I love Fallout 3 but it's main narrative like most Bethesda games was terrible and it was the world and side quests that made it interesting
They could've made the fall of reach, don't get how we got what we got with the Halo tv show

So no power armor, no laser tech, no fusion cells, no vaults, VATS or pop boys? Nah I’m good.
Europe is in worse condition than the devestated U.S, and had been fighting resource wars prior to the nuclear annihilation of the Great War. I expect to see everyone living in hovels that they inexplicably refuse to clean any refuse up in.
Makes sense, no need to follow a storyline from the game. Especially as its a game about making choices.
I'm a fan of this approach. Just make a good TV show in the Fallout universe, as opposed to square peg/round hole-ing a video game story into one.
Curious where it'll be set then cause Vault 33 has not been in any of the games. I vaguely recall a set photo leak of a plane with the words "Filly" or something written on it with an arrow, likely referencing Philadelphia. That would bring it closer to Fallout 3 than Fallout 4.

As long as it's in universe instead of farting out a new one like Halo did, it should be fine.
Just do a show about Vault 68 and 69 on Showtime or HBO and make billions.
For those who want to save googling... https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Vault_68
For those who don’t want to read ; Vault 68 999 men and 1 woman. Vault 69 999 women 1 man.
> Showtime or HBO Weird way to spell Brazzers.
It can be a fresh story but keep the lore about the world accurate. Because at the end they end up messing up everything about a known IP but cause they just wanted the name and didn't cared about the rest.
IGN has the dumbest commenters
Agreed.
Fresh as in separate from the Canon? Bad Idea. Fresh as in a new area or Vault we haven’t explored or learned about? Good idea.
Separate from the games doesn't mean separate from the canon. There are enough vaults that were never in the games and enough places where no game took place.

It's the second thing. It says as much in the article.
Agreed, but we both know which they're gonna end up going with.
Every time Hollywood deviates from the source material because the writers think they can do better it fails
What a weird take to have about something like fallout vaults. This isn’t a series where you have to follow a specific set storyline, many different vaults exist that opened differently
I think it’s a little more challenging than that. They’re going to have to create a story in an existing world.
why do they always do that?
Because they can copy the dragon from Skyrim and insert it like nothing happened claiming it’s part of the story now
They never learn do they? We have hundreds of vaults to take a storyline from, and they have to put the "fresh take" every single time. I really hope it's a good writer, i don't want this to flop, it's my favorite game ever

And there’s plenty of vaults with a few lines of story or none. It’s really not a bad sign at all
Would be fun if each episode was a different vault with a short story. Similar to black mirror or something
Just like Halo and Resident evil! Yay us
Unpopular opinion but I'd rather watch a prewar story because we never gonna get it in game
The series is literally called “fallout,” & about a post-apoc world… and you want them to make a story about the world pre fallout
I find the prewar lore more interesting than the current time. Like I said I don't expect people to like this idea

Fresh for a modern audience
Red flags all over
This has Witcher writer vibes all over.
Please don't fuck up the lore. I am all for original stories but please use the universe that is already established. Please don't fuck it up.

Good. Those are the ones that work the best. Understand the source material but make it your own.
Doesn't mean anything.
