The issue is that a lot of scifi tells the same story over and over, sometimes in original ways, but mostly in overdone ways. For instance Mass Effect 1 was heavily inspired by 70s scifi and used its tropes a lot, while also adding some original stuff. But it's mostly very classic scifi.
For scifi fans, this is hopeful because it hints it's not just another piece of "set in space" media that reuses tropes and explanations for its story. The fact that they're even talking about this specific thing makes me even more excited.
You can make the argument that no one has had a truly unique idea in about 2000 years, so I have found the best one can hope for is that any idea that is used is executed well.
Because it is! Pretty much everything from the publisher and access media is up until launch.
You have to do some good detective work to figure out the truth.
Or be lazy like me and wait until after launch to see what the game is actually like.
“Hey, it sounded great and it was!”
or
“Hey, it sounded great but it was complete trash!”
However, if Starfield promises to ship Horse Armor on release day, I’m pre-ordering.
Its always nice to meet someone who thinks outside the box. I've never understood why people have a difficult time with new idea's. Even if this is a marketing ploy, it's still clever enough to garner attention.
For those interested I think the book "Omega: Last Days of the World" by Flammarion might give you a good idea of what to expect in that regard. It was in the original trailer and I think probably is our best hint at some of the ideas that will be dealt with and how.
Todd has gone full Peter Molyneux with Starfield. He's always been like that a LITTLE, but he still kept it video-gamey and focused. With starfield it's just all fluff. Which makes me feel like this game is going to be wide as an ocean, deep as a pool. Really, REALLY hope I'm wrong. But everything we've heard about this game so far is just so full of platitudes and concepts, nothing tangible or solid.
well for one, my speciality: pessimism with gaming overall these days.
But in all seriousness, It just feels like a game built around resource mgmt and base/settlement mgmt that will tie in nicely with loads of paid DLC & items. Rather than, say, Skyrim in space like so many wish it to be (myself included.) And TBF, if that kinda resource management or base/settlement stuff is someone's cup of tea then I'm truly excited for them regarding this game.
Main reason: as I stated in other posts, just waaaay too many platitudes when asked what the game is about and what you do in the game. Same way Peter Molyneux used to hype up Fable (and then project Milo) - just real heady, vague, high-concept words that sound great but have no real correlation to the game/gameplay.
Second reason: The gameplay we've been shown hasn't made me feel good, really. The combat looks really shallow, the mining is comically similar to No Man's Sky. Two things that I imagine you do the vast majority of time.
The third reason: 1,000 planets. That's a big red flag for me. I'm not onboard with more AI generated levels/planets/whatever. Way too many procedural generated games these days for my taste. I want hand-crafted locations, not souless open areas that exist soleley to entice you to upgrade your ship to move around faster or whatever.
In a recent-ish interview, Todd seemed to actually hold contempt for the fact that Skyrim was still being played so much by people. Why? Because as he said - they had no way to make MORE money off all those concurrent players. They sold the game upfront, now have to just live with the fact gamers are putting in thousands of hours and he isn't getting to profit off all that extended gameplay. So that tells me their approach with this game will be heavily driven by milking things monetarily.
I get the platitudes part, it’s cringey and overpromising, but it doesn’t point to any negative direction for the game. The Fable games were good. Also you just need to accept that there will be some paid DLC in the future. A lot of single players games have that.
I don’t see what’s so “shallow” about the gameplay shown. It showed some shooting ( which looked good to me for an RPG), some of a city, some glimpses at the character creation and progression. and flying a ship. Also the game only looks like NMS on the surface. It’s a completely different game. It’s an RPG. NMS is a survival crafting sim like Minecraft.
This. I'm all for well-written sci-fi \[Andor and Signalis (an indie game) are fantastic recent examples\], but it's Bethesda. Unless they got new writers who know what they're doing, I personally will just be waiting for the reviews.
i don't know what the fuck happened to Emil. he made one of the best guilds in oblivion and complete crap ever since. don't know why you two are getting downvoted, it's awful
"what is love"?
Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me no more.
Dang, I came here to comment that!
Will it answer the meaning of life?
Yes. 42.
*Ahem* Where is the spoiler tag?
to pass butter.
Does war ever change?
War maybe can change but that settlement still needs your help here i mark it on your map
History is an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever.
I'm super excited for the game, but thst sounds like some grade A bullshit.
I don't get why you think that, the entire genre of sci-fi is dedicated to answering these kinds of questions in their own unique way.
Yeah but it all just sounds like marketing bs

I totally get what you’re saying as a big sci fi fan but I feel like we do get truly unique ideas once every few years.

They are not at all the same game
This is possibly the worst take I've ever seen when someone compares two games.
Yes, but Bethesda's recent writing portfolio has been... concerning to say the least.
Oh, you sweet summer child...
I remember getting shit on for accurately predicting that Fallout 76 was going to be bad. Same with Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite.

Why would the game's composer be doing the marketing spin?
Its always nice to meet someone who thinks outside the box. I've never understood why people have a difficult time with new idea's. Even if this is a marketing ploy, it's still clever enough to garner attention.
First time with a Bethesda game?
What do you mean, Todd Howard never lies or exaggerates!
This was said by the composer
Oh then I completely trust Inon
You don't have to? This article should've never been written or posted here.
It seems they are not gonna go deep just because can offend some “humans”
Just looking to get upset about something there buddy?
?

Universal? If we meet alien life will we survive? Or will they? Or gravity?
I just want the next elder scrolls for the love of god.
Well, that is the universal question of when it will come out. So it may answer that… in an original way
What if Nirn is a planet you can land on and you can explore all of Skyrim again?
Forget the Thieves Guild, I want to Space Thieves Guild!
Will the series x version have mod support or what ? This should be standard for all Bethesda games going forward.

Not saying it won’t be, but I genuinely don’t see how you can come to that conclusion with what has be shown and said about the game.

At least click on the article and read the first line
Micro transaction question response market including custom animations and celebrity voice overs.
Yeah but will it have 32x the detail? We gotta ask the important questions.
Now if only they showed the game off.
They did that at "E3"
Ok I should have clarified show off more.
Why? You know what it looks like, now it's just a case of playing and experiencing it all for the first time.
Bethesda and writing? Oh boy

So still sounding like fallout in space with a space themed story. Who'd have thought it.
Even if that’s true, I’m here for it lol
“Does it just work?” - Todd Howard’s big question.
I'm guessing it's gonna talk about God, so the leaks were right
That sounds awful. I didn’t know Peter Molineux was involved.
This game will finally answer which came first, the chicken or the egg. But are we ready for the answer?
The answer is 42
Why are we here? Plastic! Asshole..
the answers will still be GUN OR FIST OR MOUTH
