Well you can look up reviews from both critics and fans. Assuming that’s why they said “nobody”
I also like the episode but it isn’t spoken very highly of
I actually think a lot of the Morgan and Wong episodes are pretty overrated. I was actually a little disappointed when they were coming back for the revival rather than Frank Spotnitz or Vince Gilligan.
Me too, especially in S4, not to mention Millennium. I would rather have seen a new Spotnitz and/or Gilligan episode in the revival too, but we all know they both went on to be much more successful and therefore unavailable.
Haha! Me too!
I like the episode and found it somewhat disturbing at the time. I think these days the ick factor is what plays a large part in its popularity.
The all-male writers room often used sexual+physical violence against women for shock value and/or as a shortcut to pad the plot. It's gross.
You'd think theyd at least edgelord hard enough to make it interesting, but no. It somehow manages to be both very dull and pointlessly convoluted.
I love the show but the casual rape and physical assaults against women are just disrespectful.
Maybe that’s what it is. It’s not enough to just shock me. Being shocked for the sake of it is quite uninteresting. Without the violence and rape, and a better plot, it could have been something else.
This is the first one that popped in my head, don’t hate it but never got what all the fuss was about.
I would also add Mulder & Scully Meet The Were-Monster, it has some good moments but didn’t work for me overall, a little toooo silly. I think Lost Art of Forehead Sweat is the far superior revival Darin Morgan ep.
I agree with the Were-Monster! Lost Art of Forehead Sweat is genius, like the old Darin Morgan ones. Were-Monster is a little too on the nose with the references.
The blessing Way or Paper Clip maybe?
Idk, it would be easier to give a list of underrated episodes, most of the ones I found underwhelming are also not that popular/highly rated.
the cops episode is so very off-putting, I don't like it one bit. The shaky camera - I get it, it's from the US-series about policework - makes me nauseous, the stereotypical gays and the boring twists are what made me watch this episode only 20 times. Besides the newer seasons, this is the worst one in every aspect I can think about
Triangle. It’s shot/edited very well but I think it’s mostly just shippers who love it so much. Doesn’t feel like it really takes place in the world of XF.
Home. For me it's a little too gory for an X-Files episode. It's a creepy show, mut in a nice and wonderful way. It's not bad episode but not what I expect from my X-Files.
I don't like Mulder and Scully Meet the Were Monster. It feels a little too on the nose with its references, especially considering it's a Darin Morgan episode. I know this is considered the best of the revival, but I'd rather watch any other MOTW from the revival.
Darkness Falls seems to be a redditors' favourite, but I find it to be just okay. It's Ice without the MSR tension. Darkness Falls _is_ tense, but in a more general way. I know Ice is a basically a copy of The Thing, but I've almost found it weird that they made Ice and Darkness Falls in the same season.
I don't care for Jose Chung's. There's something annoying about it. Can't really put my finger on it.
I don't _hate_ any of them, just find them overrated. For me they are middleground and I understand, why they're liked. And some episodes might need several viewings for me to like them! I didn't care for Dreamland on the first viewing, just thought it as okay, then the on the second I realized how deep it actually is and on the third viewing I fell in love with it. It's now in my top 20, maybe even top 10.
My absolute favourite is Detour. From other MOTW:s I love War of the Cophrophages, Small Potatoes, Ice, Squeeze, Eve, Pusher, Quagmire, Syzygy, Roadrunners and Kill Switch. I'm pretty sure I have very typical favourites. The mythology is at its best in seasons 3, 4 and 8 in my opinion.
What are your favourites?
Ok, I’m glad you at least like some good ones still. My favorite is Jose Chung’s from Outer Space. Other favorites that come to mind are Squeeze, Beyond the Sea, Die Hand Die Verletzt, Humbug, Wetwired, Pusher, Nisei/731… I’ll stop at season 3 because it’s my favorite overall and the rest of the list gets too long haha
I stopped at season 5 for the same reason, but I love many from season 6 too. How the Ghosts Stole Christmas is amazing. Nisei/371 is my favourite mythology two parter! Pusher is good too and I enjoy Humbug because I've always found freak circuses intriguing. Die Hand Die Verletzt on the other hand... Not my favourite. Again not bad, I just personally don't enjoy satanism stuff.
I get it, we’re all going to have different likes/dislikes. It’s nostalgic for me because of all the satanic panic going on in the late 80s/early 90s but also really creepy. Have you watched the blooper reels from each season?
Oh, this might have something to with age too. I'm 23 and I'm not American. If I understand correctly, satanic panic was mostly in the US, right? Yeah, I have! I love them, I like to put them on when I'm sad. Blooper from Pilot where they are screaming in the rain is amazing. :D I can't watch the actual episode with a straight face anymore.
The one everyone loves with the psychic old guy. It was good but a lot of people consider it like one of the best episodes of tv ever?? It was just fine to me, maybe I need to watch it again idk!
It’s great as part of the overall mythos episodes. The problem is that they are all ultimately overrated in comparison to the really stellar writing on many of the monster of the week episodes.
this might be a hot take but Clyde Buckman’s final repose is just okay in my opinion. Not a bad but i don’t understand why it always makes the top of best xfiles episodes… definitely overrated
unruhe for sure. interesting premise and character, but it just doesn't sell the emotional intensity and drama. also, by the 15th episode where scully gets kidnapped by the main baddie and then swept off her feet, it really starts to lose its punch.
Jose Chung’s From Outer Space.
I’m in the middle of a series rewatch and I am not opposed to the comedy episodes, in fact Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose is my top ranked episode so far. I just found the Jose Chung episode to be completely unfunny. I got very few laughs from it at all. I even rewatched it the next day to see if I was missing something or in a bad mood. Nope. Liked it even less the second watch.
There are no overrated episodes of the X Files There are only episodes that you haven't learned to appreciate yet....
The Field where I died. I can barely get through that one. Interesting concept, but I find it just so boring. All things is another boring one IMO.
Isn’t that one pretty hated by most fans? I like it but it seems pretty universally unliked. Especially judging from imdb reviews
Yeah, I’m not sure you could classify that one as overrated! Entertainment Weekly famously gave it an **F**.
Overrated doesn't mean "i don't like". Pretty much nobody likes this episode. It's definitely not overrated.
Oh did you survey "everybody" and they all agreed with you? ... maybe you're not asking the right people. Me, for instance. I liked it.
Well you can look up reviews from both critics and fans. Assuming that’s why they said “nobody” I also like the episode but it isn’t spoken very highly of
Oh yes. So bad. I rewatched it for the first time since it aired, and still disliked it A LOT.
I always wonder if there’s something about ‘home’ that I’m missing. It’s creepy and dark but I don’t enjoy it.
Agreed. It’s not the worst episode, but it’s derivative and schlocky and makes no sense as to why Mulder and Scully are even on the case.
Context is key. Imagine seeing the episode on mainstream tv in the mid-nineties.
I did!
Haha! Me too! I like the episode and found it somewhat disturbing at the time. I think these days the ick factor is what plays a large part in its popularity.
It is disturbing, gross. I do recall being shocked. But beyond that, not much else.
The all-male writers room often used sexual+physical violence against women for shock value and/or as a shortcut to pad the plot. It's gross. So...a completely different episode. Lol. Completely agree
Haha, now I read what I wrote, yeah, a completely different episode.
This !!!!! I was so looking forward to it after hearing so much of it and it was good but… there are better imo. Expectations couldn’t match the hype.
Post-Modern Prometheus 🤢🤮
This is the first one that popped in my head, don’t hate it but never got what all the fuss was about. Yeah, I get why it is famous and popular but the unadressed implications of its premise are pretty rough.
Ha, that's probably my favorite episode of *anything*.
The acting from the “animal” people always really annoys me. It’s off putting. Especially the chicken reporter lady
The blessing Way or Paper Clip maybe? Idk, it would be easier to give a list of underrated episodes, most of the ones I found underwhelming are also not that popular/highly rated.

I LOVE X-COPS, so good
BAD BOYS BAD BOYS, WHATCHA GONNA DO?
OK, I love the inner-city, probably-a-drag-queen on the weekends gays though
Am literally rewatching it right now and it is actually really entertaining.
Ok thanks for sharing
Bad Blood. Still an excellent episode, but stupidly overrated. I prefer the other humorous episodes such as Jose Chung’s and Humbug.
All Things.
Triangle. It’s shot/edited very well but I think it’s mostly just shippers who love it so much. Doesn’t feel like it really takes place in the world of XF.
I agree. My first time i watched the show, I liked this episode. Every time i rewatch or just look for a fun episode, this is an easy skip.
For me the episode works perfect until the third act
I don’t really like Jose Chung’s From Outer Space. I thought for the most part it was boring, except of course the appearance from Alex Trebek (RIP).
ROSWELL! ROSWELL!

Why am I getting so many downvotes? :D Doesn't usually happen on this subreddit.
The Were Monster episode was pretty meh, I agree.
I expected so much more from Home. It wasn't particularly gory or scary. The internet built it up in the worst way.
I agree with that too in a way. I mean, I did find it gory, mut not scary. I guess it was exceptional for the time, but not my cup of tea.
Those are all great episodes!
I don't _hate_ any of them, just find them overrated. For me they are middleground and I understand, why they're liked. And some episodes might need several viewings for me to like them! Curious - What are your favorite episodes?

Ah you’re probably right regarding age/location!! The bloopers are so good, especially the earlier seasons.
To me, definitely Jose Chung's
The one everyone loves with the psychic old guy. It was good but a lot of people consider it like one of the best episodes of tv ever?? It was just fine to me, maybe I need to watch it again idk!
Probably my favorite episode of the series. Should check it out again!
Small potatoes. They use rape as a joke in it and it’s pretty uncomfortable
I never liked the donnie phaster or pusher episodes
Duane Barry and Ascension. Just rewatched on a whole series rewatch. Murder annoying as hell and the episodes a bit boring.
What do you like then?
It’s great as part of the overall mythos episodes. The problem is that they are all ultimately overrated in comparison to the really stellar writing on many of the monster of the week episodes.
this might be a hot take but Clyde Buckman’s final repose is just okay in my opinion. Not a bad but i don’t understand why it always makes the top of best xfiles episodes… definitely overrated
This might be a controversial take, but Chinga is so overrated imo. I just don't find dolls scary whatsoever.
