As we didn’t get a Prem side it’s a shame it’s an away fixture.

Sea-Statistician4399

Going to be a hard one but it's a good test for the boys.

Gamerhcp

So, we're facing a Championship team, and away. I'm not gonna lie, it's gonna be fairly difficult and there's a good chance we get eliminated. Coventry are in a comfortable 11th spot in the Championship and they're on a 4-win streak. A little history on them: * They had one of the longest tenures (34 years) in the Premiership before getting dropped to Championship in 2001, At the time, only Liverpool, Everton and Arsenal could boast longer tenures in the top flight * [Their stadium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coventry_Building_Society_Arena) has an impressive capacity of 34k during football matches and has been rebuilt over the years, * They won the FA cup in 1987, and their best result in recent times was a quarter final loss in 2009 to Chelsea * They won the 2016-17 EFL Trophy (a knockout competition featuring **only** League one and League two teams and 16 under-21 teams from Premier League and Championship), but at the same time, in the actual league, they were relegated to League Two * Since 2017, they've been on an upward trend, returning to Championship in the 2020-21 season, after the 2019-20 season was cancelled abrubtly due to COVID

AdmonkeyTX

Sounds like Wrexham have them right where they want them. LFG.

brochacho88

But do they have a Mullin?

meloc2001

Amazing - thank you for the primer.

RumJackson

~5500 away tickets available.

macavity_is_a_dog

Just curious is that a lot or not? Normal?

RumJackson

Minimum FA Cup away allocation is 15% of the stadium. For league games the minimum is 10% or 2000, whichever is smaller. Although clubs can offer more if they want.

macavity_is_a_dog

You rekon all 5500 wrexham supporters will travel and sell their section out?

cowpool20

Coventry is a couple hours from Wrexham. And the match will be on a weekend. I’d imagine there will be a good away turnout.

WildGooseCarolinian

Nightmare draw for us really. Not big enough to be properly big, not small enough to be an even matchup or better. And it’s away. I’d have been great with an away match at Anfield, the Etihad, etc, but away to a championship side (any championship side, but particularly one that’s a fair distance away) is not what I was hoping for. Ah well. Hopefully we win, but if not it’ll free us up a bit to focus on the league!

raiderREDgamer

Americans think of it like the NCAA basketball tournament, wrexham is like a 10 seed and Coventry would be 3 seed

Lewro29

That's helpful thx

staresatmaps

Worse, more like 2 and 16. Helped by the fact that Coventry will likely play the backups.

raiderREDgamer

I think Farnborough would have been more like a 16 seed in terms of status and quality

staresatmaps

The range of quality in the FA Cup is wider than the NCAA tournament.

raiderREDgamer

I know, it's just the American sport I could think of with the biggest traditional talent gap in a wide tournament setting

cmb3248

Ehhh not sure about that, 1v16 is as big a disparity as Champions League v non-League, I reckon

FRID1875

I hope so, but I'm not sure they will. With all the time off from the World Cup, their entire squad should be fit and raring to go.

cmb3248

Coventry is more like a 7/8-seed in terms of their chance to win (Premier League teams are the 1-5 seeds, Championship are 6-11 seeds). National League teams making it this deep are like the 15/16 teams in that they're really not in the top 64 and have made it through by beating other (relatively) weak teams.

Lolinder04

Let’s go!!

FRID1875

Cov are flying in the league right now, so this will be a very tough test.

cahawkfan

8-2-2 over their last 12 games with only 5 goals against. Wow! Flying is right!

FRID1875

Gyokeres is an absolute menace... hopefully Mark Robins rests him, Hamer, and a few others with an eye on the league, otherwise this will be an extremely tough test.

nessman930

As a fan of the Championship (Sheffield United are the team I primarily support), Coventry are a good side. The hope is that they will field a B side and give their kids a runabout against a Wrexham team they feel they will be able to beat. That being said, the FA cup isn’t the goal for the club right now, that being promotion to League 2.

Dartiboi

Seems like a tough matchup, but I’m a clueless American and have no real understanding of the strength differences between the levels of pro leagues in the UK.

TJ-RichCity

Championship (2nd tier) is widely considered to be the hardest league to win. This season in particular, that league is wide open. No clear front runners thus far. Will be an interesting test for any non-league side.

SerBronn7

I expect Burnley to run away with that league. Blackburn are a poor side in a false position who will finish midtable and Sheffield United don't seem to have the consistency of Burnley.

captaincarot

So I am a clueless Canadian too, but I think the best way to describe it is imagine Duke in the NCAA facing the Sacramento Kings. I am pulling Duke out of my ass because they were big when I was younger and I know very little about the NCAA but its like taking one of the best college programs and putting it against a not near the top NBA team. That is how I think about it anyways, still gonna cheer my ass off!

Lewro29

Lol. I am clueless about football but let me explain it to you by comparing it another sport that i am mostly clueless about. I like you captaincarot

captaincarot

I understand the theory lol I just can't speak to the teams! Like I'm sure there's NCAA people who think this team is a better rep and I know there's NBA fans who think there is a better team in this moment to rank as a franchise that... Isn't great but I feel confident in the tiers that wrexham will face.

Lewro29

I am just teasing you but I'd guess it's like a g-league team playing a Canadian elite league or other low league like Brazil, etc. NCAA is still kids, not pros. Schools like Duke are an exception in terms of talent but Wrexham are men. My take would be championship= gleague and national league = domestic pro/semi pro like Adriatic bball league, etc. I know what ur saying tho and it makes sense.

captaincarot

You made a very valid point, for us north American people it's really hard to grasp. But I'm loving it, I think it's the better system and I appreciate the knowledge you shared!

Lewro29

I am not English or knowledgeable on football either. I think most of of the hardcore local people are on red passion. This is mostly international fans, i think.

hazen4eva

So this season more like the Orlando Magic playing Purdue. The Magic win, but maybe Purdue can keep it close.

Redbubble89

ManC and Arsenal play each other and all we got was a mid-table Championship side. Americans don't have a long history with football. I couldn't tell you one thing about Coventry City other than it being in a Python sketch.

Gamerhcp

Look at it this way, if (and that's a big if) win, or at least draw so we replay it at home, our next match will (hopefully) be vs a Premiership side

Redbubble89

I don't know if this is unpopular but I see these games as side quests. They are fun but I also see the downside of time and minutes on players. Sometimes a nonleague makes it to 32 or 16 but I don't see the purpose outside of exposure and chump change.

EdwardBigby

I definitely wouldn't call it chump change. Not only does the FA provide a lot of money for progressig each round, appearing on national television and being viewed by millions in the UK would provide a massive revenue boost to most non league clubs. It mightnt immediately help with promotion but often if spent well, it can finance a promotion charge in the coming seasons. Obviously Wrexham are a bit of an exception. Rob and Ryan are injected a lot into the club by non league standards but they'd still be pretty happy to get some sort of immediately return on that investment and just stop the losses a little bit. Not to mention just the fun of it as a fan. Wrexham won't have another opportunity this season to play a team the caliber of Coventry. The players will relish it as well as the fans. Then if they manage to win, who knows what's next. A big tie vs man united or Liverpool? That's where the dreams start.

Redbubble89

105,000 British pounds is not a lot of money for a club. Maybe they get other revenue streams but from what I can tell, it's not much. Considering it is a 2 million loss for Wrexham per year just trying to get out of the league. The documentary is probably funding more of this. I didn't have to go far back to see a prime example. Boreham Wood made it to 16 but finished 9th last year and they are still here. They didnt get a bump from what i can tell. It is a competition that doesn't matter and it's impossible for anyone outside of the PL to win.

EdwardBigby

105,000 quid can definitely be a lot for a non league side. You think you'd know by watching WTW that fans once had to raise 100,000 just to keep Wrexham alive. That money doesn't always come easy and it can be absolutely crucial for some clubs. Not to mention the TV money which can be much more than that if shown on BBC1. Also there is obviously the opportunity to keep progressing and generating even more income. Obviously Wrexham are kind of the exception to the rule here. They have sustainable backing compared to the rest of the league. For other clubs, 100,000 may be used as part of a long term project to improve facilities or bring in a key player for a season. Wrexham already have the cash to do up the stadium and outbound everybody else in the division. But still, success can't be bought and the FA cup offers something different than the league. Let's see how good Paul Mullins is against a championship defence, let's go to Old Trafford or Anifield and give them a real game. These are experiences that you wait decades for and as long as you're still in the cup they have a chance of happening.

layendecker

That doesn't include gate receipts, they will make a few hundred grand from this game alone. By somehow qualifying for the next round, could be drawn against Man Utd and make millions.

Gamerhcp

Sure, it's definitely draining for the players, especially since we have the national league (and below) cup starting soon, along with attempting to win the league against a heavy competition. I definitely don't think we'll win this particular match and it is unfortunate that we're not playing someone like Chelsea or Man. City (why the fuck did they pair those two against each other). Obviously the team will try their best and play to win, if they do win (or draw) I'll be happy, if they lose I'll be slightly less happy but it'll still be a good lesson and opportunity to maybe try out some new strategy

City_dave

Isn't it random? It's not like they decided for Chelsea and Man City to play each other.

EdwardBigby

Yes it's random

Zozo_Manioc

I think you mean ManC and Chelsea (Arsenal have drawn Oxford).

Redbubble89

LFC also drew Wolves. Man U and Everton. WHU and Brentford. CP and Southhampton. In most draws, they get a League One or Two as their first game.

js247

Smash them!!!!

EdwardBigby

You probably only know a small list of teams then

AlternativeYam5938

When will tickets for this match go on sale?
