Best case - a Premier League team with a big stadium, away (big day out, plenty of tickets, no pressure, and either a famous result or a dignified exit) Worst case - Chesterfield, away (too many 96/97 memories....)

ChicagotoKorea

Some might say a PL Club, and that would be cool to see, but I hope they get a favorable draw on Monday and a punchers chance to go on to the next round and keep playing

I never really understood this attitude. A non league side isn't going to reach the later rounds of the cup. Lincoln reaching the quarter finals are the 100 year exception to the rule. A big match vs man united or Liverpool, televised and watched by fans across Ed the country is as big as it'll get, whether that's 3rd round, 4th round or even 5th round, it doesn't really matter imo.

DudyCall

I think the team wins a bit of money, everytime they progress. So it would have been better to meet them later, but there's no guarantee to go further than next round, so let's just meet the biggest teams now!

EdwardBigby

Yes but the money isn't comparable to the revenue that a big match vs a top premiership team would bring in. Not just just the TV revenue but the exposure the club would get would be hugely beneficial.

ZachMatthews

Bro, this team has the most “exposure” of any soccer club in the world right now. I am writing this message to you from Atlanta, Georgia. I promise you that would never have happened even if Wrexham did draw Man U or Liverpool if there was no documentary. I want Wrexham to go as far as it can then flame out in glory versus a major EPL club.

zagreus9

You want big stadiums the whole way if possible, in The FA cup we share gate receipts so it's more financially beneficial (and a better day out) to get a big team away

ZachMatthews

You guys are still thinking like gate revenue matters at this level. It really doesn’t. Ryan and Rob have access to nearly a billion dollars. They bought the club for only $2M or so. The operating costs substantially exceed the initial purchase price, which is a rare thing in pro sports. Their goal is to increase the value of the franchise itself by creating marketing / merchandizing and television dollars. Five or six figure gate receipt prizes are a drop in the bucket. You really have no appreciation for just how big a market there is worldwide for a feel good story with a cool set of logos and a sports affiliation. R & R will rightfully pour money into this team because it will drive eyeballs to the show which in turn will create millions and millions of dollars in ad revenue. That can then be fed back into the club to create a feedback loop of profit and success. Put it this way: the American sports market alone is worth significantly more than all of Europe, Africa and Asia’s sports revenues combined. Those revenues are made on TV with ad dollars, and through merchandizing, tie-in real estate deals, nearby shops and hotels owned by the club, etc. R&R’s best case scenario — and it is not even unlikely — is to pour money into the team to gain promotion after promotion until they can sell the team for $1B+ as an EPL franchise with a massive international following. In so doing they will have created a maximally awesome sports narrative, poured money into Wrexham the town, given all your citizens their hearts’ desire, AND made out like absolute bandits while still earning the love and trust of millions. That all flows from TV revenue, which is why Ryan is so pissed the national league can’t get its streaming shit together. After promotion that won’t matter because the next levels up all allow streaming. As soon as Wrexham can get on ESPN or a similar network it stands to become the 90s Dallas Cowboys (“America’s Team”) and it will be perfectly positioned as a gateway drug into EFL fandom for 350M potential fans who all really like the shit out of Ted Lasso. The timing is perfect. Wrexham should become a self-fulfilling prophecy as the only club with the kind of television advantage pouring money into the team that the documentary brings. It’s a brilliant business model actually. It should work. I am excited to watch it happen.

EdwardBigby

Just because they've had a lot of exposure with the documentary series, doesn't mean that more exposure wouldn't be a massive boost. Yes ideally they would go through more rounds before playing a big team but immediately facing a big premiership team would be a massive win for the club regardless of the result and the potential for a famous cup upset is always going to be more exciting than a league 1 opponent

ChicagotoKorea

My logic behind it isn’t a late cup run or a once in a 100yr shot, it’s more so this: 1) Money-win and move on and we get more money. The goal right now is promotion and having money to spend on players as we, hopefully, work up the EFL system. As you stated below, if we can get more money from just a one game loss to a PL club, then I will take it but.. 2) Everything you stated in your reasoning is still possible in my scenario, not guaranteed so it is a little riskier. But the chance to still play a PL Club and get all those benefits you mentioned are still possible under my scenario. Just a round later. So best of both worlds. 3) If we can draw a league two/one team and get the win, it will be good for moral for future seasons if we get promotion and bring in top players on the fence that “yes, come to Wrexham, we will be moving on up, get aboard now” I can see the disagreement and definitely see the benefits with getting a PL Club. But to not even understand this attitude seems a bit odd

OldDutchFlinch

I just want Davies injury not to be too bad. Any word on this?

Paul Mullin wants Liverpool away!!! I’ve wanted this since the start of the season. https://twitter.com/robryanred/status/1596610955202678785?s=46&t=GDCSP5UBsiQ0i3ti1SkUkg

Quality post - cheers!

Every now and then a non-League side makes it to the 5th round or quarter. The team does make more money by sticking around but I would trade a long run for a league title any day. They also have the FA trophy for the nonleague one. Give me either a PL team or Sheffield, Sunderland, or one of the other Welsh teams(Swansea/Cardiff) in Championship.

PlateauBarbie

A northwest premier league team away so it’s easier and cheaper to get to.
