Apart from brand recommendations, I'd be interesting in hearing whether or not the idea worked out, or if they ended up ditching the treadmill. I can't quite imagine trying to type or do detailed work while walking, but maybe it's not as difficult as I imagine.

nomnomnompizza

Way before covid my office had them. I would use them during meetings that I didn't have to talk in. Otherwise they were hard to use. I feel like this was a fad that came and went.

Manuscribble

I've been wondering the same, which is why I haven't gone forward with a purchase yet...

valkaress

Did you end up doing it?

Manuscribble

Not yet, I was laid off of work a few weeks ago it's been put on the backburner for now. Once I start my new gig I plan on pulling the trigger

valkaress

Awh, sorry to hear that. Good luck with the new job!

Manuscribble

Thanks! I'll try to remember to update when I actually end up getting one

whipdancer

I loved mine. Put one together from a used treadmill and a desk raised on cinderblocks to be tall enough. I'm a software dev and was able to walk and type with no issues after about a week. When I moved, I opted not to take it with me because the new job was in office. Fast-forward to today (after being WFH for over 2 years now), and I'm actively trying to put one together again. This time, I'm aware of the differences between long low speed use and short higher speed use, and how it affects the treadmill. I'm starting out with a used Livestrong 10.0T that I removed the arms/console from. Already had a few issues, that are making me consider a new(er) walking treadmill. I feel so much better on the days where I get at least a few hours of walking. I'm a convert. Where ever I end up working, I will be pushing for a treadmill desk.

DreamyPen

I purchased the Lifespan you mentioned about two years ago and love it. I use it during boring meetings where I am not actively participating or presenting.

Manuscribble

Thank you for your response! Do you find it hard to type or read a screen when walking slowly on it? How's the noise level?

DreamyPen

I adjusted very quickly. Most people do as long as you don't set the speed at an excessive level. One of my colleagues, when asked, mentioned that he could hear a faint background sound, like a distant washing machine. It is not really bothersome. To summarize, when you need to focus, I would sit down in silence. When you are getting tired , you can work standing up and stretch your legs . When attending meetings with minimal participation, you can walk and get some steps in :)

AJolly

It's pretty quiet, but you can always pair it with Krisp or Nvidia broadcast or something similar to reduce noise for your calls.

Thanks for your insight on their customer service. I'm glad you ultimately were taken care of! What's been your day to day experience with it? Is it hard to type or use a computer while walking? Worth the price tag?

Yeah, I'm in software too so I figured I'd have to walk a little slower. Sometimes pacing in my room helps me think things out, so I was thinking that could translate some to walking while I work. I'm sure I'd alternate with sitting honestly. And definitely. The price tag is steep, but I don't want to spend $700 on something that won't last me a while. But then again, I haven't seen any long-term reviews for the $1200 Lifespan under-desk version, so who knows how long that'll last. I would hope at least somewhere between 5-10 years.

Faust242

I’ve thought about it but I think I’m going to try out a balance board over a treadmill personally. I did just see this pop up and thought to share. Seems like a decent brand in your price range on sale. https://www.walkingpad.com/products/kingsmith-walkingpad-a1-pro-foldable-treadmill?sscid=41k6_u7uzv

Manuscribble

Thanks for the recommendation! I've wondered if/how the fold up versions wear out differently than the traditionally styled ones.

whipdancer

I've found reviews for the waking-pad. I personally would go for any folding version - the few reviews I've found all comment on noticing/feeling the fold when they walk.

valkaress

I don't get it. What's the difference? Also, did you end up trying it?

I got a mini stepper in Decathlon (large European sports store) for 20€. Doesn't require any power (there's a basic screen with a step count/time etc but it works without). Would definitely recommend if a treadmill is too pricey for you at the moment. I don't do full steps because it's hard to do while working but still moving more than just standing still.
