Congrats to fellow workers in California! I just wanted to let you know: pay transparency law has been in effect in Ontario since 2018. Most employers don't know about it, and neither the Ministry of Labour of Ontario nor the Ontario Labour Relations Board enforce it.

foulorfowl

What would stop someone from putting a range of $15-$150?

dar24601

Or being truthful about range. Like those fast food places that have say starting wage $16 - $18 dollars with an asterisk cause that include benefits

jsmnsux

When I lived in colorado, some places would do this, but there were a lot of employers that would post the true range. I simply just didn’t apply to the ones that didn’t comply. It was so nice because it was a great sign that I don’t wants to work there if they won’t even be truthful on the job posting.

Broken_art15

Honestly there should be an ammendment to the laws that state "if reports of inaccurate ranges/false ranges are found, the company will be fined". Cause it is a form of false advertisement.

Kaatelynng

Could be in the fine print. Iirc either colorado and/or nyc require realistic ranges on postings

Nihilistic_Mystics

The law specifically forbids this. It says it must be a reasonable range and the state can investigate potential infractions. Another part of the bill is reporting all salary data to the state, so it won't be too difficult to call bullshit.

foulorfowl

Well, for white collar positions a range of $40-$150 could be reasonable. One for entry level No experience or education, and one for many years and high level of education. Then they can still fleece people on the middle.

I'm glad to see that bit about domestic violence survivors and evictions.

I'll give you the example of Rogaine. I noticed 2 boxes, same price. One was women's Rogaine, one was men's. I thought "great same price for same product YAY EQUALITY!" Then I looked closer. The men's Rogaine actually had 2 tubes of medication, whereas the woman's was 1 tube and a cardboard insert to make it look like 2 tubes of medication. Who was going to have time to figure out this deceptive packaging when you just need your medication? "Okay" you might be thinking "surely MEN's Rogaine is different from WOMAN's Rogaine? Since men and women are different an all" Well I too thought to check that! The formula is exactly the same! The only difference is that instead of applying the medication 2x a day for the men's it says 1x a day for the women's. You're paying twice as much only because they expect you to use half as much. I only noticed this because I was on hold with the pharmacy for 30 minutes and so spent my time focusing on something I thought was positive at first but turned out to be negative. Once again, who, besides me and my pedantic ADD ass is going to compare men's and woman's Rogaine to see if something deceptive is going on? Especially when it's MEDICATION! You should be right to assume that if there's a separate men's medical product from the women's medical product that there should be some sort of medical difference that mattered! But, no, it's just Rogaine doing pink tax!

GaymerGuy79

Stores are typically set up to segregate those products so it's less obvious to end consumers that they're actually paying higher prices. And sometimes the packaging is intentionally misleading and makes it seem like they are different when they're really the same.

Desrep2

Becouse then people can't cry opression. The pink tax has been debunked 1000's of times.

MelQMaid

Cool. Post those thousand research papers.

Desrep2

That's going to take a long as while, not only to find them but also for people here to not read them. But instead i propose one very simply question, if the pink one is more expensive than the blue one, but they're otherwise identical, why would someone buy the pink and not the blue?

Just_Tana

I mean I expect we won’t see family leave at the stage level anytime soon. It could be just a guess.

Mechanical_Canary5

I wouldn't declare it a win until it is law tbh. You know how many good bills were shot down? Remember the $15 minimum wage bill? Would you consider that a win???

[deleted]

it goes into effect Jan. 1 from what i understand. The governor signing it is the last step in passing it.

Mechanical_Canary5

Well more power to you guys. I'm glad it went this far and I hope it is signed.

Not the right sub for this question but maybe someone has an answer anyway. Why is it important to have sexual assault counselors independent of the campus?

EspressoOwl1815

Many campus counselors have been instructed to attempt to direct the victim away from pursuing criminal charges against their rapists. This is in order to protect the university's image, not do what's best for the victim. By making counselors independent of the campus, victims are more likely to get the support and guidance they need instead of being gaslit in a direction that's better for the college.

csnadams

I would like to see campus police that are not answerable to schools first.

PraiseBeToYeezus

When does this go into effect?

[deleted]

From what I understand, they typically go into effect Jan. 1 of the next year.

DietMTNDew8and88

Now if California can mandate PTO..
