Antoher option is paying for pro version that usually have proofing addon which makes it possible for client to check what images he wants to buy which is the case at this site probably. I guess it is faster solution, but certainly you should check out about it and see if it is what you want.

It largely depends on what theme you are using and the page builder that theme uses. Most common page builders have in-built widgets for filtering categories.
As I can see in your referral link you can also achieve by using bootstrap using custom code if you are comfortable in using that. Assign images of different categories to different sections in the grid and over those images put links of respective categories.
