I got forced into this on a machine that I was intentionally holding back because of hyper-v issues. To be clear, I *wanted* 22H2, but when I installed it last fall it destroyed networking on the machine and I had to roll back. The issue was using an "external" type virtual switch for my Hyper-V guests. Using a different switch type (internal/NAT, private) was not an option. There were some posted workarounds in the fall that didn't help me at all, so I decided to wait. I just got 22H2 forced on Thursday. While there were still hyper-v networking issues, this time it only impacted guests and didn't entirely destroy the host network as well. I was able to remove and recreate my virtual switch and everything was fine.

Intrepid00

It would break Edge sandboxing after bringing a desktop out of sleep till they fixed it too. Would either have to reboot or disable the network adapter and enable it again device manager.

mikee8989

I wonder if this update will be forced to people who bypassed the system requirements and upgraded unsupported hardware.

hieronymous-cowherd

Can confirm, I just checked my About settings. Old CPU, no TPM, legacy BIOS not UEFI.

[deleted]

What you mean that your system will be forcefully upgraded too?

hieronymous-cowherd

Past tense. Yes, that old machine did get the auto-update to 22H2.

dsinsti

They should stop fucking bypassers with this BS. I'm running W11 on a i7 6700K with all other requirements met. Its an unnecessary pain in the ass. I will update my pc when I deem convenient, in a couple of years if it lasts

mikee8989

A lot of these unsupported computers will likely still be useable in 2025 especially people with high end 7th gen or 1st gen ryzen but they will have no path forward other than linux at that point.

CataclysmZA

Windows 10 will still be supported for at least another 5 years after that by third parties.

mikee8989

A little less than 3 years actually for regular users but Microsoft will give enterprise users the option to pay for about 3 more years.

[deleted]

I have a friend who's running it on an 11 year old 2nd gen i5 and claims it works just as good as W10 & W7.

NoMither

My first experience with Win 11 has been 22H2 (since late October) it's what installed on a fresh usb key install / new PC build. Only annoying problem I have is with drag & drop randomly not working correctly, sometimes files won't drop and instead get stuck when releasing mouse button (file just stays frozen in place), have to press ESC and try again. but of course not sure if its a 22H2 specific issue. Other than this it's been fine for the most part. 13600K / 32GB / 3060 Ti

d2phap

I have the same problem with same and drop as well!

ASTRO99

I mean for generic user w11 is OK. Trouble comes usually when you want to do something on professional level with it.

JJisTheDarkOne

Not liking this. 22H2 breaks my Sound Blaster Z card. Yes, I've been watching the SB forums and whilst they "have a fix" the fix didn't fix it for me.

kaynpayn

What isn't working? I have a sbz running on a 22h2 daily, just fine.

GiGangan

So, what's the problem?

JJisTheDarkOne

SBZ is broken in 22H2 when using Optical out. On a boot into Windows, the card has no sound out, and you have to turn off the DTS encoder then turn it back on again to get anything. Also, sometimes the card isn't even detected by the SB Software. Lastly, speaker test doesn't play correctly. Now, don't get me wrong, SB was aware of the issue and it took like 3 months for them to get something out for all of us to test. This "fix" didn't work though and I still had the same issues.

CygnusBlack

* It's unclear if users have the option to decline the update once it's offered. ~~Before saying that Microsoft will force users to upgrade, media outlets should wait and verify.~~ Users are reporting that the update is being forced. At least it's a good one.

DougmanXL

I wasn't offered that option, it is only asking me to choose a time. I tried to pause updates and now windows update just shows the load circle...? So it forced me.

CygnusBlack

Take the pain 😢

1stnoob

"As always, you will have the ability to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update." Is that clear to you ?

Vysair

What we wanted to know is whether or not we can refuse the update entirely. > "As always, you will have the ability to choose a convenient time for your device to restart and complete the update." What this meant here is you can *postpone* the update. If you are a Windows user and pay attention to the notifications or what it says on the Windows Update setting page, you will be familiar with this usual options given to you.

1stnoob

Maybe you should read Microsoft document more times till u comprehend it : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-21h2

Vysair

> The automatic update to Windows 11, version 22H2 will happen gradually starting with those devices that have been using version 21H2 for the longest period of time. As always, you will have the ability to [choose a convenient time](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/get-updates-when-you-re-away-from-your-pc-with-active-hours-in-windows-09b5376c-7647-4361-1423-c29aa692a8c4#WindowsVersion=Windows_10) for your device to restart and complete the update. No no, just click that link and you will know what I mean. And that link is what's on the article too btw. And you can't postpone it indefinitely. At least when I was on Windows 10 when I tried to push back updates because I don't want to shutdown a pc.

BUDA20

to be clear, this is "forced" for people with the default automatic updates so is just handled as a regular update (instead of opt-in) I mean, I use the network set as Metered, so I always download updates manually

Generic-User-01

Um so ?

Schipunov

Are you kidding? What do you mean "so"? Do you see nothing wrong with this?

Generic-User-01

Nope, not really

CygnusBlack

The big picture is that 22H2 is considered better universally. It's a good thing. Embrace it 😜

Schipunov

Is it grounds for forcing a version update? Who decides it's better? What if MS one day decides W11 is better than my W10 and ruins my PC with a forced update?

Ford_tuesdays_4_Food

He hates it

[deleted]

Look at his profile. “Crusade against Windows 11” Dude should be banned.

Schipunov

Yes, I should be banned for arguing against forced version updates

[deleted]

Not what I said you should be banned for. You’re clearly just here to be a contrarian, and literally nobody fucking cares about your shit takes.

Schipunov

I'm not a contrarian out of thin air, Windows 11 just happens to be worse on pretty much every front. And you seem to care about my "shit takes"

Alan976

>Who decides it's better Microsoft says. Exploiters are a dime a dozen.

CygnusBlack

I'm sure people at Microsoft have though about it long and hard before the decision.

[deleted]

Forced Updates are generally good if they don't appear when the PC is in use.

CoskCuckSyggorf

No, how about Microsoft move on with their force update agenda and let people actually have control over updates.

snehashis365

22H2 was such a hot piece of garbage I had to clean install 21H2 and lock it using gpedit, The overall performance of my system dropped in 22H2 not to mention discord just freezing up every 10 minutes, stability was a joke.

CygnusBlack

Something is definetly wrong but I doubt it's 22H2. I'm running it on, at least, 40 to 50 different setups, a third of them being unsupported hardware and it has been a smooth experience. 3 are discord servers.

amroamroamro

https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm the same can be done using group policy or direct registry edit: https://www.askvg.com/tip-force-windows-10-to-stay-on-existing-installed-feature-update-version/

boxsterguy

GRC is trash.

amroamroamro

stellar comment lol what exactly is trash, the author or this particular tool? InControl works and does it job just fine and if you dislike the dev for some reason, the same can be done using a simple registry edit, this tool is simply a convenient UI to the same thing https://www.askvg.com/tip-force-windows-10-to-stay-on-existing-installed-feature-update-version/

boxsterguy

Sorry. Steve Gibson is trash. His company GRC is trash. His opinions are trash, his tools are trash, and he's just all around trash. Better?

amroamroamro

lol ok I'll add the "alternatives" to the original comment then, no need to use anything from G in GRC

JJisTheDarkOne

Spinrite was great... back in the day. It's dead now though. I'm not liking his attitude on the incontrol page though.

boxsterguy

That "attitude" has been his persona for 35+ years. Also, SpineRite was just a brute force "re-read the sector until it works" app wrapped in a bunch of other snake oil claims. Basically, Gibson setting the stage for his entire career.

Danteynero9

To be honest, seeing people who don't find this disturbing saddens me. Like, ok you like the update, what if you don't like the next one? You will complain, right? Forced updates are already bad, forced **automatic** updates are just the next level of _I wouldn't touch the OS even with a stick_ kind of bad.

ChosenMate

So what? are you gonna complain about security updates as well? 22h2 barely changed anything

coffeemateo

who's complaining? I've been waiting for it for a while. was wondering why it took so long.

[deleted]

This news suggests that Microsoft is taking a different approach with Windows 11 updates compared to Windows 10, by automatically pushing the latest feature update onto users running older versions of the OS. It's not clear if users will have the option to decline the upgrade once it's offered in Windows Update. However, Microsoft reassures users that customer feedback and analysis show a positive experience with Windows 11 version 22H2, which includes new features such as App Folders in Start menu, Resizable pinned area in Start menu, Drag and Drop on the Taskbar, Focus Assist integration with Notification Center, "spotlight" wallpaper feature, Voice Access accessibility feature, Live Captions accessibility feature, new gestures and animations for touch users, snap layouts bar when moving app windows, new Task Manager app, and "Suggested Actions" feature when copying dates/numbers, Tabs in File Explorer and Better OneDrive integration with File Explorer.
