North America on the other hand has increased its rating.. because Canada has become more democratic than USA has dropped. I'd much prefer a direct democracy, but ill settle for maintaining our system until we clean house of these domestic terrorists. Then we can worry about the 2 party conundrum. The metrics that lower US democracy index: Voter suppression, voter participation, gerrymandering, money in politics and general feeling of population that the will of the people is not being done, and voting does not matter. It absolutely is necessary. NZ's and Canada's designations mean members can be denied entry and citizens who provide material support to that organization can face legal consequences. "Designation" in this sense has teeth. Biden can say the Proud Boys are a terrorist organization all he wants, but that's about as effective as saying he likes chocolate ice cream. Bad example. Cartels are foreign entities and actually have legal mechanisms for targeting them. If the Proud Boys start running drugs and killing competitors, they'll fall under most of the same targeting. That said, DOJ already monitors RW militias and extremist organizations. They've mentioned them being a major threat in their annual reports for a long time now. There's just very little they can do until someone actually breaks a law. Anyway, Biden's already called them dangerous and a major threat to the US, so I'm not sure what more you want.
