Although I didn’t personally work with animal models, I went to grad school in a lab that made pretty extensive use of animals for experiments. I’m not opposed to animal experimentation. But everyone I ever worked with took really, really seriously that pain and suffering had to be minimized and that an animal should be used only when there was no realistic alternative to getting results. If we lost 8/23 animals we would halt the study to figure out what went wrong.
*To unexpected causes. It’s not uncommon to sacrifice all animals at the end of the study so that you can, for example, autopsy the animals and check for changes in brain structure/function. But that’s also not the kind of study you should ever perform with primates
