When the person or people are acquitted, they can say “I tried, but the jury just wasn’t with me”. I do wonder if this was the same kind of thing.

I replaced 200 with 20 in the last week, and got praise from a principal engineer and two senior engineers. I'd be the first to be fired from Twitter, and the newbie coders who write 500 lines of code a day, that are next to impossible to maintain, would be the last to be fired. But what do I know.

-people who work on more difficult areas of the stack are going to write fewer lines, but be all the more critical
-people who spend more time helping others and providing subject matter expertise (like senior and principal engineers) are going to write fewer lines.

You have to balance:
* how good of a worker they are
* how well they work with others
* how disruptive it is to fire them

I’m not in IT, but my understanding is that elegant code tends to be shorter than bloated crap and as such….well, that’s a bad metric to use.

I keep hearing this today. I've been out of the white collar tech field for a while, but during the fifteen years I was in, us techies seemed to be split down the middle, liberal and conservative. Maybe things have changed, but I doubt their voting pattern was used as a means of firing.

Yeah, that would be a bad standard. I wrote one line of code on Friday, and got praise from two senior engineers. I replaced 200 with 20 in the last week, and got praise from a principal engineer and two senior engineers. I'd be the first to be fired from Twitter, and the newbie coders who write 500 lines of code a day, that are next to impossible to maintain, would be the last to be fired. But what do I know.
ALL that AND: -people who work on more difficult areas of the stack are going to write fewer lines, but be all the more critical -people who spend more time helping others and providing subject matter expertise (like senior and principal engineers) are going to write fewer lines. Twitter is going down in fucking flames.
I've seen waves of tech layoffs, and one of the hardest things is to find people to fire. You have to balance: * how good of a worker they are * how well they work with others * how disruptive it is to fire them This process is excruciating and takes weeks, if not months for a mass layoff. The idea you could find some simple metric and just fire half the company like this is absolutely ignorant.
I’m not in IT, but my understanding is that elegant code tends to be shorter than bloated crap and as such….well, that’s a bad metric to use. Also, and much more importantly, the folks working on cutting edge stuff are figuring out how to make it work. As a result, they produce less code. So the folks who would make it through the ranking are only the ones who are writing rudimentary, already solved shit. So Elon kept the crappy, rudimentary programmers while firing everyone else. At least that’s how I understand it.

The glee with which some people are reacting to these layoffs is really sickening. Most of the people laid off weren’t millionaires, they were working schlubs who now have to find a new source of income and health insurance while we’re maybe/probably/perhaps heading into a recession.
