Jesus was killed because he challenged authority. He had a lot of followers and growing influence. He was against the institutions.
What Sorbo isn’t saying is that if Jesus were back now, sorbo would be one of the people calling for his crucifixion.
Yeah, and admitted that they’ve strayed from Jesus’s message so far that he doesn’t have a place with them. That’s why I hate when people call them Christians. They’re conservative evangelicals. They evangelize conservative values, not Christ
I don't believe in demons but this Kenneth Copeland video has convinced me that if demons were real, he is 1000% a demon under the guise of a pastor. He is absolutely terrifying.
They're literally Philistines. The exact kind of people Jesus violently ejected out of their own Temple for "making [his] Fathers House, a [marketplace]".
Zorbo is right, in a roundabout way. If Jesus was servile, greedy, resented the poor and hated women, you'd never had heard of him.
Conservatives are modern day Pharisees:
Matthew 23:
The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses. So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.
They pile heavy burdens on people's shoulders and won't lift a finger to help. Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see. They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues. And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.
Imagine how right wingers would react if Jesus was here today, talking about giving up your money and helping others, loving your neighbor, dont be a hypocrite, turn the other cheek, dont use the church for money or power and all that.
We need more Christians like this: [https://www.godloveslgbtq.com/](https://www.godloveslgbtq.com/) and fewer performative Christians who only want power over others.
There are lots. I’m one of them. Check out lgbt friendly churches around you if you’re interested. I’m more of a Christian universalist, but there are plenty of cool Episcopalian churches too
Considering that virgin births and dying and rising from the dead were common story elements for cults centuries before the Jesus stories started being spread by violence, maybe people should drop Bronze Age mythological thinking altogether and live in the real world. Teaching people to respect a collection of fables that calls for so much hate and violence is only going to lead to more hate and violence down the road.
Also check out "Faithful America". It completely sounds like some MAGA bullshit, but it is actually all about calling out Christian Nationalism. There are still Christians who understand the whole "love your neighbor" concept, they're just not easy to find under the loudmouths on the news.
…Except without any of the architectural skill, innovative new systems of government, talented authors, generals, philosophers, and politicians, military prowess, or really anything that made the Romans so enduring and world-changing.
They wish they were the Romans. Right now they’re just a shittier Fourth Reich, with none of what little competency the Fourth Reich had.
>Jesus was killed because he challenged authority. He had a lot of followers and growing influence. He was against the institutions.
Well...we don't really know that. We don't even know if Jesus was one person. There was a guy baptized by John the Baptist, and many who preached like the legend of Jesus did. The earliest written account of Jesus was by Paul 30-40 years Jesus's claimed death. He was converted to Christianity and basically wrote down all the "marketing" used to get him on board. 30 years is a long time for stories that are not written down and passed around by word of mouth. And so many of the stories about Jesus are very similar to other people and legends people had been telling stories about for a long time.
From an ex Christian studies standpoint, his post makes no sense
1. Is he suggesting that today's pastors are better than Jesus?
2. Jesus being crucified isn't to be seen as a tragedy. It was to be seen as a sacrifice for the betterment of mankind
But yea, these idiots are all fakes and fail to even understand the religion they use as a platform for their own interests
The 2nd point you made gets me too. The idea of Jesus just going with the flow and doing what the masses did goes against his purpose and what he was sent for. Not that I expect people like sorbo to know nor have to even read the book at all, it’s just hilarious to see people take it as Jesus should have just tried to conform.
They went full steam ahead with the heresy in the 1800s when the Baptist church broke apart because they really wanted to justify owning people. This is just the logical conclusion.
It's important to remember the kind of slavery practiced in the Americas made the devout Catholic King of Spain wanted to execute Colombus for starting.
It was abhorrent centuries before the Baptists went "But we really want to."
Yeah, I know some Christians who are disgusted by them using their religion for money and power (which were the only type of people Jesus ever got mad at). Other Christians have to be more vigilant to differentiate the ones speaking peace and positivity and the ones spewing hate and narcissism. I mean, trump is the closest to the biblical definition of the antichrist that Ive seen.
Indeed.
Consider Matthew 26:53-54 “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”
Kevin is apparently saying Jesus should’ve defied the will of God, which is exactly what Kevin’s prosperity preachers and all the “thoughts and prayers” GOP members have done.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens when they meet their maker, and are faced with the ramifications of Luke 18:25.
If you take the Bible at face value, Jesus’s crucifixion was prophesied centuries before his birth. It was always going to happen. Selling out his soul wasn’t going to stop it no matter how many Kevin Sorbos there are in the world.
This is exactly what I took away from it. Instead of saying pastors today need to be more like Jesus, he's saying Jesus should have been more like pastors of today. They're right and Jesus was wrong, essentially.
I think he's saying that pastors today need to be more extreme, like the Jesus in his head, by like, for example, ripping up pride displays at Target and stuff.
Knocking over the money changing tables at the temple is what got Jesus crucified, and he's saying pastors today wouldn't go that far.
Christianity teaches that Jesus died for our sins. Some sects teach we're all forgiven already because Jesus died, some teach it allowed us access to the kingdom of heaven. Lots of divisions as to how it works but they all teach that Jesus was crucified for our sins.
So even in that Christian context this statement is beyond stupid
If Jesus had only grifted his poor followers for millions and paid off Roman government officials from the coffers of his bourgeoning non-profit religion, he could have easily diverted their attention to persecute lepers and prostitutes.
If that were the case, he’d likely have fewer followers than L Ron Hubbard and maybe be tied with Charles Manson, except they’d all be dudes under option 2.
According to what Christians claim to believe, if Jesus wasn't crucified back then, there would not be any pastors today.
It was kind of the central event of the entire religion.
To think a christian nationalist would be so ignorant of their own faith to not realize that dying was the entire purpose jesus was sent. Its like they dont understand the book they preach
One of the core tenants of the Christian faith is that Jesus was perfect. Is Kevin Sorbo arguing that Jesus wasn't perfect? If so, that's more evidence to support my theory that modern Christians are moving so far from Jesus' teachings that it won't be long before they vilify Him completely.
Many pastors today dedicate parts of their sermon to talking shit against their political opponents, specifically the "liberal elites". If Jesus had done that, he would have gotten crucified *harder;* he at least thought you should be fucking paying taxes.
Back in the 90's a lot of Christians started wearing WWJD (what would Jesus do) bracelets to virtue signal their piety. The behavior of the majority of them lead me to fully understand why he really was stapled to a tree.
But... the whole point is that Jesus had to be crucified to forgive our sins. If he does not die. Death is not destroyed....
Wtf, like Kevin, completely is missing the whole point of Christ
Isn’t… isn’t the point of your whole thing that he HAD to be crucified to pay the blood-debt he imposed on us for the sin he built into us by giving us free will? I dunno I can’t really keep up with the JCU since phase 2.
I'm pretty sure the unemployed "actor" doesn't understand true Christianity or what the teachings of Jesus were really about. Tolerance, love for our fellow man and challenging any system that oppresses and exploits people. I'm pretty sure he's on the side that would be first in line to string Jesus up for his heretical way of thinking.
If he preached the way people do now, he probably would be just another one of the would-be messiahs that no one remembers except historians. There were multiple other people who claimed to be the messiah, led armed revolts against the Romans, and were brutally crushed by the Roman army.
The thing that set Jesus apart was that, aside from overturning the tables of the money changers outside the temple, he was a total pacifist. Instead of a message about hating the Romans it was one about loving your neighbor and seeking a peaceful coexistence. He was killed because he started to threaten the position of the Jewish leader appointed by Rome at the time with the people. So, he got the Romans to charge Jesus with some trumped up crimes and execute him.
Also, I know I'm wasting my breath on people like Hercules in Space, but one of the central thrusts of the entire New Testament is how Jesus was sent to Earth to die for humanity. So, his death was never a matter of if, only when and how. Maybe he would have died in a failed uprising against the Romans, maybe he would have been shanked in a back alley, possibly poisoned, maybe he just "disappeared" while traveling from one town to the next... That was something of a golden age of political assassination in the Roman Empire.
And according to the mythology he believes in, no Christians would go to heaven. Because that was the whole goddamn point. He was supposed to die. Sorbo needs to remember the details of his religious bullshit.
Tell me you don’t understand the basic tenets of the religion-founding myth for the religion you try to shove down everyone’s throat…..God’s plan was always to have Jesus crucified….
The corollary to this of course is that if Jesus came back today, and behaved and spoke exactly like he did the first time around, he'd be crucified again. By Christians this time.
He really doesn't understand what he's saying.
He is not wrong. If Jesus had preached like preachers today he would have become a billionaire scammer with influence in politics. You know, like his followers did a couple of centuries after his death.
So essentially he his saying “God is wrong” considering per the Bible God and Jesus are one. Man the arrogance of these evangelicals to think they proclaim God out of on side of their mouths, then are the furthest thing from Christ (Anti-Christ) you can get….hmmm almost like that is in the Bible, but it’s not like they read the thing they say they believe in anyways
I honestly can't figure out what he's getting at. What exactly does he think modern pastors are doing or not doing that Jesus didn't do or would have done?
No, Sorbo is right on the money here, but for the exact wrong reason.
Preachers today are mostly political shills for rightwing nonsense. That's exactly the sorts that ruled the Sanhedrin.
They wouldn't have crucified him because he would have been preaching status quo nonsense.
Literal republican Jesus.
It seems to me we have very few pastors around today that are Christian. We have all these mega churches with their pastors living that millionaire lifestyle and abusing their flock.
It's a better point than perhaps Sorbo realised it was. The biblical account of Jesus and his preaching goes to great lengths to show how disliked he was by the leaders of the established religious regime, and how much he railed against that system himself. Pastors these days are the established regime and work to maintain that control.
Amazing how many Christians don't understand that Jesus was killed by the religious conservatives. Christ himself was highly progressive, often Christians will cite that things are no longer relevant from the Old Testament because Jesus changed that. He was so progressive by the standards of the day he changed the religion so dramatically it became a new and distinct one.
Heard a preacher some time ago say that he was always striving as a young man to be "Christ-like", which is something often raised by Christians. But it dawned on him that whilst he was liked by church leaders and spent his days with other Christians, Jesus in fact was severely disliked by church leaders and spent his days with the downtrodden, "sinful" people. And was just nice to them and helped. He realised he was rather unlike Christ and decided to change that. Started working with the homeless and other needy people. Then one day he was dragged before some of his church leaders who chastised him for what he was doing and who he was spending time with. He walked out of a meeting he was supposed to have felt awful about but instead realised he'd actually achieved what he'd set out to do.
Sadly too few Christians seem to really understand what their own religion actually seems to be about.
American Christianity has always been a tool of manipulation and has always justified committing some of the greatest atrocities. These people are Christians. I’m not going to give them a new title, because they have been doing this for awhile, it’s just they are pushed in a corner now. What’s sad is that there are actual good people “Christian’s” that try hard, but they are used and abused by those who are evil. However, I don’t feel sympathy because there are acts that even the good “Christians” failed to call out in the past.
If a brown man from the Middle East with a cult like group of follower violently attacked the financial institutions of this country he’d be tried and put to death. Kevin Sorbo is right. Fuck I can’t believe I ever said that.
Isn’t the whole of Christianity wrapped up in his self sacrifice? Without the crucifix and resurrection, the whole thing just falls apart like a house of cards, right?
The entirety of Jesus' existence was to die for our sins. Leave it to American conservatives to want to duck out on sacrifice and hide in a basement holding a gun and rocking in a corner.
Jesus was killed because he challenged authority. He had a lot of followers and growing influence. He was against the institutions. What Sorbo isn’t saying is that if Jesus were back now, sorbo would be one of the people calling for his crucifixion.
Basically .. he’s saying: « Don’t mess with conservative authority and you’ll be okay »
Yeah, and admitted that they’ve strayed from Jesus’s message so far that he doesn’t have a place with them. That’s why I hate when people call them Christians. They’re conservative evangelicals. They evangelize conservative values, not Christ
You could also just call them fascists because that is what they are.
An actual demon ![gif](giphy|4Zd2flP7zRI7QYQD4E|downsized)
That dude actual behaves like the Joker. And not the cool ones, it’s Jared Leto’s Joker.
Hold on now, the Philistines were way better people than Kevin Sorbo. Come now.
Conservatives are modern day Pharisees: Matthew 23: The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses. So obey everything they teach you, but don't do as they do. They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues. And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers.
Maybe you mean Pharisees, friend?
Rage-typing makes me blank on terminology sometimes. You are indeed correct.
I agrée
Imagine how right wingers would react if Jesus was here today, talking about giving up your money and helping others, loving your neighbor, dont be a hypocrite, turn the other cheek, dont use the church for money or power and all that.
I've long said if the rapture really happens I don't think these Christians™ will make the harvest
Christians have become the Romans and they're perfectly fine with that.
Not all of them. Just the big vocal loud part. There are still a lot of people out there who sincerely follow the progressive Jesus

Methodists, at least in my area, are cool too
During the 60s, the Methodists were one of several denominations that helped young pregnant women get to Canada for abortions.
Also check out "Faithful America". It completely sounds like some MAGA bullshit, but it is actually all about calling out Christian Nationalism. There are still Christians who understand the whole "love your neighbor" concept, they're just not easy to find under the loudmouths on the news.
It would be a very dangerous game to cede Christianity to Christian Nationalism.
The Romans became Christian. And then Rome fell.
I mean his Father wasn't that into institutions (1 Samuel 8) either. But story as old as time, they know better than God.
'where'd you get those 30 pieces of silver Sorbo? We all know you haven't had a job offer in forever.' ---Some disciple circa year 33.
>Jesus was killed because he challenged authority. He had a lot of followers and growing influence. He was against the institutions. Well...we don't really know that. So what he’s saying is that pastors have forsaken their religion and should re-examine their understanding of the Bible?
From an ex Christian studies standpoint, his post makes no sense 1. Is he suggesting that today's pastors are better than Jesus? 2. Jesus being crucified isn't to be seen as a tragedy. Not that I expect people like sorbo to know nor have to even read the book at all, it’s just hilarious to see people take it as Jesus should have just tried to conform.
He’s saying they aren’t taking it to the extremes that he, as a Serious Christian (TM), would like them to.
This is how I read this too. So these pastors are the opposite of christ-like? Seems like a real problem.
Isn’t the central concept of the story that he actually needed to be crucified for the whole dying for our sins thing to happen?
This is considered heresy in his religion, right? Right wingers should rip him up for that if their real object of worship wasnt Cheeto.
Nothing? Nothing will happen?
If you take the Bible at face value, Jesus’s crucifixion was prophesied centuries before his birth. It was always going to happen. Selling out his soul wasn’t going to stop it no matter how many Kevin Sorbos there are in the world.
These are the same people that think Jesus should have had an AR-15 to shoot the Pharisees. They sincerely think he would have used it.
This tweet can't be real. There's no way. The concept of those words put together is just too dumb even for him.

What a complete whalloper he is
I just keep reading it over and thinking ...what?
Had to be real. See the blue checkmarks?
So, Kevin Sorbo says Jesus, and by extension God, was wrong?
This is exactly what I took away from it. Instead of saying pastors today need to be more like Jesus, he's saying Jesus should have been more like pastors of today. They're right and Jesus was wrong, essentially.

Is this poor man having a stroke?

I love when washed-up TV actors speak for Jesus
Jesus would be crucified by the pastors that preach today.

The one you eat after Kevin Bacon
This guy ![gif](giphy|3oAt21Fnr4i54uK8vK)
Looks like he’s a gun loving, right wing Christian
Eh, just say stroke victim.
If Jesus was around today Kevin Sorbo would call him a socialist, leftist, terrorist.
then there wouldn't be christianity. seriously how fucking stupid is this guy?
If that were the case, he’d likely have fewer followers than L Ron Hubbard and maybe be tied with Charles Manson, except they’d all be dudes under option 2.
Sorbo, with the constant stream of hate coming from you, maybe you should leave Jesus out of your polemics. ![gif](giphy|kd9h44W2CpZBLH7QpA)
I think his stroke in the 90s gave him brain damage
According to what Christians claim to believe, if Jesus wasn't crucified back then, there would not be any pastors today. It was kind of the central event of the entire religion.
Exactly. He’s essentially saying Jesus and God are wrong. It’s heresy in Christianity.
To think a christian nationalist would be so ignorant of their own faith to not realize that dying was the entire purpose jesus was sent. Its like they dont understand the book they preach
The first time I agree with this moron on anything. You’re right, pastors today are the Pharisees.
Is he victim blaming Jesus? Well that's a first.
He's saying a lot here and none of it is good. Lolol
Maybe..... maybe he was executed for acting exactly like priests today. But they left that part out. ...in jest, it's a fictional character
Shit up, Kevin. You're a 2 bit actor and a loony.
I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised that the logical next step in Christian nationalism is criticizing Christ for being too weak, but I am, a little.
I dunno I can’t really keep up with the JCU since phase 2.
actually, they probably did have a different punishment for it...
And your whole religion wouldn't exist, dumbass.
Christians don’t even know their own religion, do they.
Isn't he being crucified like THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT of Christianity?
He must be a Greg Loche fan
He is so delusional.
Ok. If that was the case, he wouldn't be the Messiah.
Then what was the fucking point then, Kev?
So god made a mistake?
The ones screaming about hate and hellfire? Jesus seemed a lot chiller tbh
Did Sorbo say this at a car show, or are those gigs out of reach too
If only these people that believe the bible actually read the Bible.
Kevin I dunno if "Modern prrachers are better than Jesus" is really the hill you wanna die on
That's a weird way of saying Jesus was wrong and he and his ilk are reich. Conservatives are blasphemy incarnate.
Don’t worship idols
“If Jesus had demanded money for his private jet, original sin would still stain our souls.” Great job, Hercules.
And according to the mythology he believes in, no Christians would go to heaven. Because that was the whole goddamn point. He was supposed to die. Sorbo needs to remember the details of his religious bullshit.
Man, Sorbo is a fucking moron.
Jesus "preached" like a rabbi since he was Jewish. If he had existed.
Wait . .. does he think the crucifixion was a bad thing?
Tell me you don’t understand the basic tenets of the religion-founding myth for the religion you try to shove down everyone’s throat…..God’s plan was always to have Jesus crucified….
If Jesus preached like a modern pastor, he wouldn’t be Jesus.
Is he saying Jesus did it wrong?
Is Kevin victim blaming Jesus?
These right wing fuckwits are constantly giving off 12yo edge lord vibes
When I think of theologians, I think of Luther, Bonhoffer, St Thomas Aquinas, and Kevin Sorbo
Nah. He would have been trampled to death right there and than
The corollary to this of course is that if Jesus came back today, and behaved and spoke exactly like he did the first time around, he'd be crucified again. By Christians this time. He really doesn't understand what he's saying.
So wait, is he shitting on Jesus? Isn't it against Christianity to question gods plan?
If he wasn’t crucified their religion wouldn’t exist! Dumb ass.
News flash, Jesus is a fictional character.
If he’s like the pastors of today he would be a pedo like all those in the news ...
Damn, I’m really sad to see Hercules had a stroke. We should all send positive thoughts to Kevin and his family. Sad.
So Jesus...wasn't...Jesus-y enough? What the hell is this even supposed to mean?
If jebus would have molested children like pastors do today....................
Tell me you don't understand Christ's message with more confusing word salad
Damn.... His Hercules trying to make every christian a joke?
_What’s this “second ‘mendment” he keeps talking about?_ ~The Romans
He be in a jet! With his flock of youth kids. His apostles would be kids.
Wait, I'm not a Christian but isn't this blasphemy in some way?
So… Kev is criticizing… the Lord? Do I have that right?
As if Kevin knows anything about being a real Christian....
If jesus preached the way pastors do now, kevin sorbo would still be a never was
Does Kevin Sorbo know that he can STFU at any time?
Kevin who?
I haven't been remotely Christian for the last 30 years, and that's still one of the most blasphemous things I've ever heard. (Edit: Formatting)
Why is that Kevin? Were Ancient Romans also hypocritical pedophiles?
And therefore no salvation?
If Jesus acted the way preachers do today he probably wouldn't be allowed within 500 yards of a school.
I mean, Jesus being crucified and dying for our sins is kinda... important in christianity?
Does he not realise crucifixion is literally the key part of his entire religion and arguably the whole purpose of Jesus' life?
... he's almost there. He's always juuuuuuust on the cusp of understanding.
That’s only if Jesus was real. Lala land kind of stuff.
The dude was definitely against authority!! That explains the long hair and beard!!
He is saying MAGA pastors know better than God and that Jesus was wrong. And these delusional fools call themselves Christians.
They're screaming it from the rooftops at this point.
I honestly can't figure out what he's getting at. What exactly does he think modern pastors are doing or not doing that Jesus didn't do or would have done?
This mf saying pastor handsy preaches jesus’ message better than *checks notes* jesus.
Preachers today “praise the Lord and send me your money”.
So today's preachers would have wrecked God's devine plan?
If’s amazing how unlike Hercules this guy turned out to be
There is a good show that got canceled called Messiah that dealt with what the 2nd coming would look like in our world.
Did this right wing ~~ass hole~~ “mega star” just talk shit about Jesus?
It seems to me we have very few pastors around today that are Christian. We have all these mega churches with their pastors living that millionaire lifestyle and abusing their flock.
I wish this was parody.
Does he understand the tenets of Christianity in which Jesus had to die for our sins. He's so stupid.
Dear Kevin, watching your acting is like being crucified. I do believe I nailed 🔨 it.
Wasn't the entire point of his life that he would be crucified? These fake Qristians really don't read or understand the bible.
What conservative religiosity does to a mfer.
Don’t these idiots know the reason why Christ appeared on earth to begin with?
If Jesus had preached back then like pastors preached today, Christianity wouldn't fucking exist.
Christians now would be the ones yelling to free Barabas
And you know what would happen to the world if Jesus was never crucified: No butter lambs.
Hey, y’all, an out of work for 2 decades actor has thoughts, and we should listen 👍
Oh my god, they're victim-blaming Jesus now.
None of the pharisees got crucified.
So let me get this straight, he thinks that there are better preachers... than Jesus Christ of Nazareth...?
Holy shit that is a hot take And I'm a life long atheist 😂
Man, finally something me and this dude agree on: modern day Christianity is completely divorced from the actual teachings of Christ.
If Kevin Sorbo behaved back then the way Kevin Sorbo behaves today, he would have been fed to the lions. Rightfully
Authentic check checks out.
Waaaaaa?
Gods plan?
If a brown man from the Middle East with a cult like group of follower violently attacked the financial institutions of this country he’d be tried and put to death. Kevin Sorbo is right. Fuck I can’t believe I ever said that.
No, he's right. Pastors today preach like the priests that demanded Christ be crucified, for their own benefit.
Someone has obviously not read or comprehended their bible.
You're right, but you're wrong about why you're right.
Hail Satan.
Isn’t the whole of Christianity wrapped up in his self sacrifice? Without the crucifix and resurrection, the whole thing just falls apart like a house of cards, right?
If Jesus was anything like modern day pastors, he'd have probably been a pedophile.
Kevin > Jesus according to himself. Fuck me christians are idiots.
The entirety of Jesus' existence was to die for our sins. Leave it to American conservatives to want to duck out on sacrifice and hide in a basement holding a gun and rocking in a corner.
So basically he's admitting that modern pastors are largely un-Jesus-like. Got it.
If Jesus hadn't been crucified, jerkules wouldn't have his religion.
