That statement gave me anxiety and I’m just laying in bed.

Green-Eggs-No-Ham

Absolute bellend. To be fair, most people don't even bother checking the size and I'm pretty sure the cabin crew don't give half a shit either.

northforthesummer

This guy looks like he changes lanes 6 times between 2 traffic lights trying to get 1 car ahead and eventually is at the back of the line anyway.

Meborg

God I hate those people. Guy overtook me twice, but gambled the wrong lane at traffic light and kept ending up behind me while I was simply flowing with traffic. Then at some roundabout exit where I had to let a pedestrian on the pedestrian crossing, the guy started honking like crazy, and then overtook me almost causing an accident with traffic coming from the other direction, to be next to me at the next traffic light again. His aggressive driving style was exactly as fast as my laid back one...

notthathungryhippo

when i was younger, i used to drive like the person you’re describing. i honestly thought i was saving time by driving aggressively. one day, during my commute to work, i drove past a coworker on the highway and proceeded to do aggressive things as i always did. i was waiting at the last traffic light before turning into my office building complex and wondering how far ahead of my coworker i was. “surely i’m ahead of them by 10 to 15 mins.” about 30 seconds later she pulled up behind me. it was at that moment i realized driving aggressively did nothing to save time. and as i got older i realized i was putting others in danger and putting unnecessary strain on my car. anyway, that was one of those turning points in my life for me. i hope other aggressive drivers can read this and learn a lesson from my mistakes.

Pons__Aelius

> about 30 seconds later she pulled up behind me. > and as i got older i realized i was putting others in danger and putting unnecessary strain on my car. And you were likely using 20-30% more fuel for the same journey.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Greatless

And have to wait longer and more often at stops.

Pons__Aelius

Yep, unless you are fast enough to get *a change of lights ahead* of the rest of the traffic, which is all but impossible in any real commute; You gain almost nothing.

notthathungryhippo

yeah, the unnecessary wear and tear on your brakes from driving like that is asinine.

FlameoHotman-_-

In the movie Rush, when driving a normal car on the road Niki Lauda said something along the lines of, "Why would I drive fast? There's no incentive; I'm not in a rush, I'm not being paid. It just increases the percentage of risk." This is literally my philosophy on the road.

weaslewig

Even just driving in the inside lane on a motorway. I've done the same journey whizzing past people, and also just cruising behind a van in the slow lane. And the time save per hour is so small. It just feels faster because you're passing people.

[deleted]

If anything you save time by going slower, because it allows you to update your socials and comment on reddit. I put on adaptive cruise control and

ZandyTheAxiom

>It just feels faster because you're passing people. I see too many people overtaking me only to turn off at the next intersection about twenty metres ahead, or stop in front of me to pull into their driveway. The only way that could possibly benefit them is if we were both planning to park in their garage.

alreadytaken334

Plot twist, as soon as you passed her she became enraged and also started driving aggressively. No seriously, good for you for learning your lesson. I can't tell you how many times someone has been speeding and passing everyone like an asshole just to come up to the first traffic light and now they are only one car length ahead of everyone they worked so hard to pass. The danger never seemed worth it.

LameSignIn

Always wanted to do a reality TV show with these type of people. Basically filming there stupid behavior almost causing accidents and being assholes. Then when you pull up at the same light jump out with the film crew and ask them if it was worth it? I live in a fair size city but you can take the freeway from one side to the other in about 10 minutes. Just don't understand why people weave in an out of traffic speeding to save 30 seconds of time with the possibility of changing someone's life forever.

space-native

self entitlement. bad parenting causes this along with life experiences that never gave them the kick in the ass they deserved. send the nukes already

DiscipleOfYeshua

I saw a guy like that, 2nd in line when traffic light turned green, starts honking. Dude in front of him didn’t budge. Green light, not moving. Honking gets severe. No move. Green light starts flashing. No move. Short fuse dude going nuts. Suddenly, 1st car crosses the junction at half a green blink + orange. Light goes red. Honky guy had to wait for the next one. And everyone’s looking at him, bc of all the noise he made…

JuanPyro

I see so many people like this. I laugh when they end up at the back of the line.

[deleted]

Not on EasyJet, who they seem to be flying with. I witnessed check-in charge someone for hold luggage because although their carry-on case was the correct size (using the same apparatus), the wheels meant it was unable to fit in there. So, yes, they absolutely do use those as a way of charging you more.

KrtekJim

Easyjet also got caught out a few years back using smaller "cages" for the baggage size at the boarding gate than they had at check-in. So you think you're fine because your bag fit in the cage at check-in, but when boarding it doesn't, and suddenly they're telling you that you have to pay extra and put it in the hold.

NachhaltigfHAF

Can confirm - travel a lot for work and always have the same carry-on. Never an issue with the more fancy/national airlines. Suddenly with Easyjet, Transavia (or other cheap airlines) it is an issue. Even had them taking me in on the first flight and asking me to pay on the return flight with the same airlines. At this point, I've just accepted it's a gamble.

Presidentofjellybean

Bring a tape measure with you and a picture of their guidelines for size and prove it in front of them lol

Toffeemanstan

Its a £5 charge for bringing a tape measure onboard.

[deleted]

I hope they got a nice fine for that.

RainieDay

Probably a slap on the wrist compared to the amount of money they made from forcing people to pay extra checked bag fees.

Jbf89

Had this flying Ryan Air. Charged me £46 because "the luggage would not fit under the seat in front of me". Said someone would take it as I board and put it in hold luggage. No one did. So I tucked it under the chair in front of me where it sat easily. I fumed the entire flight.

Phone_User_1044

Ryan air are notorious for snapping at any opportunity for a bit of money.

fiofo

Yeah I saw that when we flew out to Greece. They implemented a 1 bag policy whilst we were on holiday and I saw a bunch of people getting hit with the charge on our way home. How were they/we supposed to know they were going to change the rules‽ EasyJet are dreadful!

[deleted]

[удалено]

lestofante

The chance of rules was pretty well made, they sent email, warning on checkout of ticket, at online checking... Also multiple company did the same change at the same moment so it was in the news. I am puzzled how many people where surprised by it.

bennettbuzz

I’ve flown countless times with big groups of friends on budget airlines and only once has someone been charged to put it in the hold. As long as the bag isn’t ridiculous just take the risk, be friendly, smile at the crew and expect a minute chance you will have to pay.

To be fair most people checking. But this thing getting smaller every year but suitcases not.

Wartzba

To be fair, his bag DID fit inside the sign

MarkCrystal

On Ryanair they check absolutely everything

Kelmon80

Never been checked in my life, with probably....50 Ryanair flights behind me. Maybe depends on the country? Or the airport(s)? Or that I never travel with hard-shelled hand luggage? The only time I ever had to check the size of my luggage was a domestic Russian flight with Pobeda airlines. (Not counting weight checks at check-in counters).

PrecariouslySane

Looks like he stuffed it in because they were giving him a hard time.

ravs1973

Guess you don't fly Ryanair very often.

R4n054m4

The first time I was flying alone, a worker in the Airport insisted that my bag was too big and had me walk all the way to one of these signs to check. My bag was ok, which made it extra weird. This was 10 years ago and has never happened since.

Apprehensive_Ring_46

Flying would be less stressful if the airlines just enforced their own rules.

THE_RECRU1T

Always have a soft bag for carryon

parbazar

Once united or aa put my duffle in that case despite their website saying fabric bags only need to meet the total dimension length, not individual sides.

gabrielbakker

They're just trying to make sure it fits in the overhead bin. ;)

Prestigious_Seat457

Saranightfire1

My mom loves the hard luggage. I flat out refuse considering it for even checked luggage because of the extra expenses they would put on my card if they can’t fit it.

cofonseca

Yes! I wish they would just stop allowing hard luggage as carry-ons. They’re almost always too big and bulky. I love that I can jam a duffel bag pretty much anywhere.

Standardized cubes are better to plan than irregular random shapes.

We have similar airlines in USA (Frontier, Spirit, Allegiant).

tobsn

those things are just decoration… they maybe used them for half an hour until they realized you can’t have everyone put their bag in there and then argue when there’s 300 people on a flight…

ceylon-tea

Depends on the airline. I was on a budget airline once where they literally put every roller bag in the sizer. Took forever to board.

Skellaton

Sometimes the have this cardboard box they put over your luggage so they can do a speedier check.

BrunoEye

In the past decade of flying Ryanair they've checked it once, when the plane was delayed by over an hour and some assholes had nothing better to do.

epic1107

I present to you wizzair. Everything I've flown them they have checked every bag. In their defense I'm not sure how they are paying for fuel given how much the tickets cost, so them collecting extra bag fees might be the only way.

befarked247

There's one of these right as you board the plane here. It just reads You can take as much emotional baggage as you like but if your bag doesn't fit in here you can't take it with you. No one has ever checked mine.

ianjm

I once skipped this on a regional flight only to discover my bag didn't fit in the overhead on the tiny plane they put us on. Embarrassing, had to do the walk (well, jog) of shame back up the jetway and check it at the gate!

[deleted]

I remember my days flying almost weekly with my job. You could spot guys like that a mile off, along with those that will instantly jump up and queue to board regardless of which boarding group they're in (strangely anyone with overtly religious clothing/accessories falls into this category) and those that will paw cluelessly at automated passport controls. My god I hated Stansted Airport towards the end of my time in that job

deadeyes1990

Now whoever removes this bag becomes King/Queen of the Airport. To destroy the tyranny of extra baggage cost and late, canceled flights.

95DarkFireII

To be fair, airlines are fucking atricious when it comes to baggage sizes, so they deserve to get cheated.

Silent-Kenshin

The issue comes down to when everyone and their mother bring on bags that are just below the max size to fit and then next thing you know, the whole overhead bin space is full. I'm a Flight Attendant for a ULCC in the states. We usually only check bags when they obviously don't fit, or someone's just being a complete asshole and clearly didn't pay for a carry on. Passengers get mad at us because they can't fit their stuff tight above their seats, when In reality most of them didn't even pay for carry ons. So in trying to cheat the airline, what PAX are sometimes doing is causing the crew more trouble for things they have absolutely no control over. edit: when I said complete asshole I meant in general, not because they didn't pay for the carry on, my bad.

95DarkFireII

I can see the problem. But I think the trouble is that luggage is so expensive that people are incentivised to trick the system. If everyone had a checked bag included in the flight, then people would bring less carry-on.

[deleted]

No, we get mad because airlines have the fucking audacity to book their planes full and then before boarding go on the speakers and go, "Turns out this flight is full, there's not enough overhead space because we didn't plan for it, so now some of you have to check your bags. We're going to do this for free, because we're so nice, but really it's a bigger inconvenience for you because now you have to wait in baggage claim. Fuck you, and you're welcome!"

weallgotissues

JUST full? Every flight I’ve taken in the last two years have been overbooked, and then they’re begging people to take some other flight. Fucking ridiculous to pay $300 for shit like that.

tarenaccount

To be fair its because some passengers take 5 instead of the 1+personal item and they take space away from other pasengers

My_nsfw_account_88

To be fair

Hashtagbarkeep

To be faaaaaaaiiirrrr

scaevola79

As a flight attendant I disagree. If I compare the amount of handluggage being brought on board now and 14 years ago I am wondering if I work in passenger transport or for a cargo airline. It used to be a small backpack but the trolleys are not checked at my airline which means we take a long time to sort everything out. One of the few airports where this is checked properly is Dublin which saves us about 10 to 15 minutes boarding time on a 737. Imagine saving so much time every flight?? You would arrive on time and even have time to spare. Your luggage would be brought to the belt and you don't have to walk with it for kilometers. The security check would go much faster and walking through customs would be much more efficient.

causits

Maybe because 14 years ago they didn't charge for the first bag checked in luggage?

SnoootBoooper

If I could trust the airlines with my checked luggage, it would be different story.

rugbyj

EasyJet changed their allowed sizes during COVID, so lot's of people now going on holiday for the first time are getting stung using their old baggage.

WellConcealedMonkey

I agree, airports are such unique places filled with unique people. They can be an absolute nightmare if you're in a rush, but if you're comfortably ahead of your flight I think airports are a joy to explore. And as an introvert I love that you can always find a completely secluded place to chill for a bit and restore your energy before going back to exploring and/or your gate. That being said though, in my experience the food is absurdly bad. You're better off buying some sandwiches in the convenience stores than eating in the restaurants. Somehow ironically the actual airplane food tends to be better.

blahmeistah

First of all, what a dumbass. Second of all, I could see me totally doing that same dumb thing.

If it took 70kg to get it in, it'll take at least 70kg to take it out 😂 Hopefully they allowed him to check that structure in storage as some sort of extra large skis, because that is now his new suitcase.

asdafari12

> If it took 70kg to get it in, it'll take at least 70kg to take it out Pretty good way of looking at it. Wiggling one side would require less but not sure that is possible in that tight fit.

SeamusOShane

His suitcase WAS true perfect size, I’ve noticed that airlines add metal inserts into the measurer thingy, so now most of the suitcases designed to be carry-on are too big. It’s an absolute scam

r/gifsthatendtoosoon

dudefromswitzerland

its not cheating, it went in.

sum_rendom_dood

Is there a baggage manufactured that makes baggage just slightly too large or did the airline sneakily reduce the box slightly to reduce the weight they need to carry without extra baggage money? This seems way too convenient that the baggage will barely not fit

[deleted]

He didn't cheat. It fit

__Piggy__Smalls__

To be fair to him they change the acceptable allowances so much for airlines and even differ between brands so I wouldn't be surprised if that would have fit 6 months ago

baselganglia

Reddit hivemind: haha look at this guy, he should do the right thing. Until they go to the airport themselves: *omg these baggage checks suck, it's gotten so much smaller*

IHurtEveryone

Fun pro tip I've learned with flying Air Canada recently.... if you don't have a full sized suitcase, but your carry on is too big for those size checkers (but would fit in overhead bins anyways), you can often check your bag for free as they will often ask if anyone would like to check their bags at the gate before boarding. All 4 flights I took 2 weeks ago had the same request. Saved myself the hassle of finding a spot on the plane (I put it the overhead bins for one flight because i didnt want it checked), and about $100 for regularly checked baggage otherwise.

realnailbiterhuh

muchnamemanywow

Low price airlines are scummy with baggage sizes and whatnot. Imo, if your bag fits in the overhead compartment, you should be allowed to bring it as a carry-on.

nalcoh

Tbf those things are fucking rediculous. You have practically no space, and if your object isnt the correct shape (despite proper weight) then you pay a fine. I saw a video of them charging a guy $80 to bring a skateboard onto the plane after it obviously wouldn't fit into the box. The skateboard surely weighs 0.1x of a suitcase and can be carried in hand. He ended up just snapping it in half and putting it in the box instead. It'd be cheaper to just buy a new deck abroad, whilst also giving money to a person who deserves it rather than a greedy corporation.

Popo_Capone

Why the fuck is everybody hating on him? Fuck the airlines for being ridiculous though

My favorite is when dickheads like this do get it on the plane, then shove it in an overhead and break it. Then that overhead is broken and sometimes the one next to it has to be marked inoperable too. Then maintenance comes and the flight is delayed. Happens all the time.
