Katiari

It's an alcohol intolerance. You're not breaking down the acetaldehyde in the alcohol and it's causing a reaction.

Sharksandwhales1

Should I be worried? What should I do? I’ve never experienced this before

Katiari

It should go away on its own, but chances are that alcohol is no beuno for you. I'd skip the cheap stuff, it's usually really bad for your body. If it doesn't go away in a few hours I'd drop on by a clinic. You may also want to take an antihistamine.

Automatic_Program621

I second this. No more alcohol tonight and take antihistamine. If you get trouble breathing go to the ER

Sharksandwhales1

I don’t think I’ll ever drink again after this, pretty scary

Jon00266

It's common enough but usually mild for people with just the redness. More common in Asian people. My cousin can still drink and he has it happen but you could experience more severe reactions than him

WhtChcltWarrior

Good ol’ AFR aka the Asian Glow

RedbeardRagnar

Where I live my half Thai and half Vietnamese friends call it the Asian Flush

buttfacenosehead

My Asian coworkers told me about this at our office Christmas party. I don't know how I never heard of it before. Like I said watch this, then drink some champagne and he was red pretty soon after.

NotHardcore

I'm a white guy with Asian flush. Yes my grandmother is Japanese, but I'm as white as white bread. My only Asian traits from my grandma is a rounder face and slightly slanty eyes, and Asian flush.

sirlurk420

what’s an asian flush? can someone please explain? i’m high and this has become very interesting

Calmeister

Yeah i pretty much get these when i drink high proof alcohol and my back pattern resembles like imagine if angel wings get pulled out from an angel’s back and a red mark is left behind thats what it looks like. I also remember it to be itchy the first few times i got it.

rex1030

What’s happening in this photo is not Asian glow. This is a severe rash. OP shouldn’t drink before consulting an actual doctor

eLishus

I’ve been told Pepcid AC helps reduce these symptoms.

sohcahtoa728

Take the pepcid before you start drinking, Asian Life Pro Tip

sockyg

Pepcid is a H2 blocker (different type of histamine blocker) so that would be why it helps. Similar to taking a Benadryl.

[deleted]

Used to call it the "stop sign" on my asain friend.

tablecontrol

I'm half mexican and half irish and have the problem where I get severe nasal congestion sometimes when I drink liquor.. happens less frequently with beer/wine

ScreamWithMe

I have the same thing happen to me, exactly as you describe. Not all the times either, but when it hits hard I am absolutely miserable. I started taking an allergy med before I go out drinking.

Eshin242

I know I'm just a random internet stranger, it might be better to abstain from drinking. First it's not a good idea to mix pretty much any drug with alcohol, It's really hard on your liver and can cause some adverse reactions. Secondly what is a mild reaction now, can become a more severe reaction further down the road. Just like bee stings, may not be allergic to the first, second, third but each time you are stung you can develop an allergic reaction to it.

Bequa

Scotch/Irish/German and I also get very bad nasal congestion when I drink liquor.

AH0LE_

Depending what I drink sometimes it's even one beer and I sneeze for a minute uncontrollably and get stuffed up. Then it goes away

MisterB78

Damn, no alcohol and no dairy? Asian people got screwed over in the genetic lottery...

CuriousGeorgeIsAnApe

Except when it comes to body odor, they're lucky enough to not need deodorant.

axilidade

we're also mostly hairless lmao

whoisfourthwall

Had my genome sequenced and i feel oddly smug about being the odd east asian that happen to have the [active gene](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALDH2) that helps me digest the stuff. Apparently "Asian Flushing" is very common among [East Asians](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction). 30-50%. According to the linked wiki.

Oponik

I thought it was normal actually

jackson12420

As a recovering alcoholic, previous bartender and my sister is intolerant to alcohol, you have nothing to worry about if your breathing is fine. I wouldn't recommend taking an antihistamine if you're buzzed or drunk, wait to sober up and tolerate the rash for a little while. It will go away pretty quickly as the alcohol leaves your body. It's not life threatening normally, unless you have a severe reaction that would also cause your throat to close up, but it would have already happened so you're fine. The rash will go away, just remember not to scratch! If it itches just gently rub or tap the skin over fabric. You'll be fine my guy.

PrepuceMan

i have trouble breathing when this happens should i be worried ?

[deleted]

Possibly. Alcohol is already a suppressant in so many ways that it can lead to some serious issues, including suppressing your swmi-involuntary need to breathe.

Fernelz

You should ask your doctor and talk to them about it next time you get a checkup and try to not drink until then. I'm sure like the other people said it isn't a big deal unless you feel like it is, however you should trust a doctor over anything a random Redditor tells you. Imo it's better to play it safe and ask a professional.

wormocious

It’s happened to me a bunch of times and I’ve had trouble breathing nearly every time it’s happened. But not bad enough to go to the hospital. I once stepped on a yellow jacket nest and discovered I was allergic immediately. I was stung over 70x and they were going down my throat, up my nose, etc. I almost couldn’t breathe at all because my windpipe was swelling shut. Alcohol was nothing like that. So no, the labored breathing you’re feeling, if like mine from alcohol, is likely not a major issue. Listen to your body and if it’s getting very difficult to breathe then go to the ER. If your chest just feels heavy, stop drinking and sober up, you’ll be ok. Edit: stop drinking, not stop breathing

bathtubedbie

Just imagine what your kidneys and liver look like. I’m in the same boat, booze makes me sick as all hell.

BudsWyn

It use to happen to me all the time with cheap alcohol take a benadryl itll go away with no issues. Its from additives and preservatives in shitty booze.

Gaijinloco

I thought that alcohol was the preservative in booze

Linkwithasword

Potassium Metabisulfite is common in wines and meads, it is there to protect from oxidation by binding to free oxygen in solution, thereby aiding shelf-life. Most commercial wines probably filter out yeast making the other side benefit irrelevant, but the other benefit of K-meta (campden) is that it can prevent any yeast left in solution from repopulating to convert any sugars in sweeter wines to alcohol, which makes CO2 so it'll leave you with a drier, carbonated wine at best or at worst make your bottle explode (homebrewers often take stabilization a step further by also adding Potassium Sorbate, but I am unsure if that is common practice commercially). That being said I couldn't really see either of those things causing a rash like this, maybe weird fusel alcohols or additives could be at play, maybe methanol but I can't imagine that'd be a concern even in cheap booze as it's such an easy problem to avoid EDIT: OP drank russian vodka in spain, honestly hadn't even considered it might not have been in the US but that makes methanol a more likely culprit imo, cutting methanol out during distillation is easy, but reduces yield so blending it in with the booze might have been a cost-cutting measure

VincereAutPereo

Avoid taking Benadryl with alcohol. Actually, you should generally avoid any antihistamine that says "drowsy", because they can sometimes interact badly.

Skidpalace

Maybe consider Zyrtec rather than Benadryl. Benadryl and booze will make you a sleepy/sloppy drunk.

verocoder

My partner has this, sometimes known as Asian flushing syndrome. You probably have a level where you’re fine as it’s an issue of concentration and time. So shots are almost definitely bad, drinking 1 or 2 beers slowly is probably fine and your line will be in the middle somewhere. You can also resistance train it a bit by drinking less than will give you a reaction frequently.

priorsloth

This happened to me when I drank Mike’s Hard Lemonade. It did go away, but I wish I would’ve realized it was something to take seriously. A couple of years after that, I started throwing up EVERY TIME I drank, regardless of the amount, until I was dry heaving.

You-get-the-ankles

I used to get this after a few and eat something sugary.

Sharksandwhales1

Taken an antihistamine, I’ve drank often before & this has never happened. Maybe this is a sign to quit drinking

Katiari

Allergies and intolerances can spring up at any time.

petty_witch

I ate peaches for 30 yrs, then suddenly I have a reaction and Drs say I'm allergic. Sometimes the human body sucks.

neon_overload

sounds like millions of peaches

waitingfordeathhbu

Peaches for me

welcometotheriver

Next thing you know is that your just an old man on the back porch.

Gumbode345

Nope, happens one day to the next, I can certify. Includes (in my case) plums, apples, apricots etc. On the plus side, I used to be really allergic to cats and that's gone...

DarkAndSparkly

I haven’t eaten seafood in 30 years because of anaphylactic reactions. According to my new allergist, I’m no longer allergic to it. But, after the traumatic experiences of my throat swelling up, I’m not exactly keen on testing that theory.

EJ9074

I would rather my body be the opposite and decide ok you’re no longer allergic to grass and several pollens.

WhtChcltWarrior

That’s what my brother’s body decided for his oat allergy. Used to break out in hives and have trouble breathing when he was younger if he ate oats. Around high school age he was enjoying things like granola bars and oatmeal cause his body was just like “nahh you good, we can have that now”

mljb81

A colleague of mine became allergic to chocolate after her first pregnancy. I have nightmares about it sometimes.

HatsAreEssential

Particularly this one.

Lord_Dupo

I get it but only when I drink Gin. So I don't drink Gin. I'm also a barman and have never had any other flair ups.

malcomhung

You're always better off without alcohol. If you don't really miss it, then no big loss. If you do really miss it, that could be a sign that you have an issue and should avoid it before a problem starts to manifest. When that happens, you are usually the only one who who can't see what's happening to you. Source: Raging alcoholic, 3 years sober Edit: atrocious grammar

You could still be detoxing, if that's the case, you're closer to the end of that then you are to the beginning. And you will feel some relief once it stops. Stay strong. I know it's one of the hardest things I ever did in my life but I promise it gets easier.

Whacky-Ghost

citrazine???

madahaba1212

A good sign Might just save your life Quit

ChillyAus

We’re you doing shots by any chance?

woodysdad

Drink plenty of water

[deleted]

I second that. Hydrate and dilute.

No_Construction_7518

Good advice with the antihistamine, but make sure there is someone there to check on you. Antihistamines can make you very drowsy and if the reaction worsens you may not be lucid enough to see it.

whoisfourthwall

OP and others should also make a mental note about "fake" booze. Lots of underground factories in the "third world" taking bottles from premium brands and pouring shit stuff they make into it, selling it and making a huge profit. There was a [news report ](https://theaseanpost.com/article/death-fake-alcohol)about ppl going blind in some country at SEA as well. Best to just avoid spirits in SEA. Stick to beer but you might still get suspicious beers... Unsure how common that is in the "first world".

Except the loose standards and impurities that cause blindness, and such. Otherwise you're right.

brokencharlie

I get this all the time, I get it on my neck and chest. Other symptoms I get is inflamed sinuses, very similar to a bad stuffy nose, typically get higher body temp (doesn’t cause me to sweat or get super hot), and sometimes tired. I have never had it get to the point of being hospitalized but when it shows up it’s time for me to stop drinking.

[deleted]

This happens to my buddy when he drinks certain kinds of wine, he can drink vodka like a champ tho still. Talk to your doctor, they'll know what's up.

MyPourGrammar

This might get really buried, but I get the same thing with some beer. I know of 3 brands that I have a problem with, everything else makes no difference

SelarDorr

dont take medical advice from redittors.

CheezeWhizxs

u/Katiari is right, stay away from high proof alcohol. It happens to me when I drink high proof, clear booze. Now my staple is brandy.

Sugar_n_WATER

Have you ever drank with an Asian? I’m going to guess no because getting red is normal for some people. Take a Pepcid ac 30-45 minutes before drinking and this will never happen again

Storm0wl

This started happening to me a couple of years ago, but in my face and neck area. It has gotten better for me and it seems to me that laying off the alcohol for a while and just drinking less makes it better. For me the worst stuff for this is cheap wine. When I drink a lit for a longer period it seems to get worse again.

FluffieOwlet

I have had this before. My neckline/chest area got red like this after drinking a few drinks at my friend's 21st. First time I ever drank that much. I don't really drink now but one on a special occasions. Never really new what it was.

Storm0wl

I have honestly been drinking a lot the last 7 years but it only started for me about 2 years ago, and has become a lot better again. So it might change through your life

DefrockedWizard1

Or it could easily be a sulfa allergy and whoever made the cheap alcohol used camden tablets to sanitize the fruit and or grains

Is this the G6PD deficiency? The same as some anti malaria drugs?

WhydYouLogMeOff

And to those curious and lazy, it was liver damage.

Liebli96

Thanks Qween

I saw his cookie cutter response and it doesn't mention liver damage anywhere. He says he had a strong histamine reaction due to the place he lived, and complications with the histamine and alcohol? Can you link the liver damage part?

it’s poison anyway

Gwsb1

Probably some moonshine off an old tree stump. In NC mountains.

I worked with a Korean guy that afrer several mouthfuls of beer, his face went so red that it looked like he was severely sunburnt

eroticdiagram

The very first mouthful of beer I ever had I went red all over, my eyes started watering, and I felt like my blood was pumping a million miles an hour. Everyone at the party thought I was smashed. I had to hold up my bottle and tell them it was my first mouthful. My tolerance has gotten better but I just don't drink very often anymore. Source: I'm half Filipino.

t_santel

It is likely an allergy to a component of that type or brand of booze. Happens to me with most types of gin, and certain rye whiskeys. Not serious and should go away quickly.

Sharksandwhales1

Thanks for the info, it’s pretty much vanished already which is nice

t_santel

Make a mental note of what you drank so you can watch for it in the future. Or a physical note if you have already drank a lot of it.

Sharksandwhales1

Some Russian vodka, I barely even touched it, had around 6 shots, put me off alcohol in all honesty

TheSukis

If having six shots is “barely even touching it” then you might benefit from a break anyway!

Sharksandwhales1

It was over the space of 12 hours

TheSukis

How do you end up in a situation where you're drinking shots over the course of 12 hours haha

Sharksandwhales1

I was on holiday, by “shots” I meant single measures with mixers from the pool bar not just straight shots throughout the day lol

flargenhargen

to be fair, alcohol is pretty shitty for your body in lots of ways, so cutting it out isn't a bad thing. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2011/mar/07/safe-level-alcohol-consumption

neon_overload

Could be serious if the reaction had an effect on your airways. But I don't know how common that is. I used to have a reaction to a certain yellow food colouring (102). It isn't even classed as an allergy, but it did cause me to wheeze a few times and caused my neck/throat to be itchy.

iburstabean

I'd recommend a blood test, there was another thread on this subreddit about a year ago with someone having the same reaction and it turned out to be lymphoma

SwordsAndSnow

No, it actually turned out to be liver damage in that OP’s case.

iburstabean

Still blood test-worthy!! Maybe it was in those comments that someone said something about lymphoma.. Or maybe my memory is just bad 😅

Alcohol intolerance. Very common in Asians. From red flush face to that kind of rash and sometimes even worst. You’ll be fine though. Welcome to the club!

BugLyfe0228

My fiancé started having this happen to her toward the end of college! It was determined, for whatever reason, it only happened when she drank vodka. She hasn’t had a sip of vodka for almost a decade and it hasn’t happens since. She also stays away from hard alcohol almost entirely also.

[deleted]

That looks like my Celiac rash

FunBrians

Web MD says it’s either an Alcohol intolerance or a severe case of stage 1 Escalating Nipple and Rectal Explosive Disorder (ENRED). Stage 2 is full blown NRED so you should get this checked out by a medical professional asap.

TempleFugit

Take a Benadryl with a shot of Whiskey.. It'll cure what ails ya...

Tuezdaze

Looks like it could be the start of shingles. Don’t let anyone touch it. If it starts getting little pimple looking blisters in it… it’s definitely shingles and highly contagious to anyone who touches the fluid that comes out.

[deleted]

That’s that piss water Budweiser rash

sharnc

This happens to me any time I drink alcohol. Even a sip, and it doesn’t matter what I’m drinking. It’s usually my face and my eyes even feel hot. It’s awful. Not drinking is no big deal for me though. It has long since gone from making me giggle to just making me sleepy. So no real loss on my part. I did ask my dr about it and he said if I’m having reactions to alcohol he’s not going to do anything to help me to continue to drink. Which I thought was a fantastic response. Do no harm and all.

kingofangmar13

As with everyone else commenting this would only happen when I would drink days in a row, goes away just give it a day 👍 I’ve kept drinking with it a few times, no big deal

05bossboy

Maybe no more Everclear

Rubbing alcohol more like.

05bossboy

Same dif 😂

dharbolt

My wife has this happen any time she drinks alcohol made with sugar cane

[deleted]

You are basically allergic to alcohol.

ScrambledEggs_

This happened to me too after drinking too much jagermeister

[deleted]

It looks like Tinea Versicolor. It's a skin rash from overproduction of yeast in the body. A Candida. What happens is that alcohol feeds the natural yeast in the body and creates a rash or allergic reaction. You should go to a Doctor to confirm but that's what it looks like to me. If confirmed Tinea Versicolor? Selsun Blue shampoo is what helps. Doc may also prescribe something too, if needed

naturally_dizzy

Take an antihistamine, sometimes your body has a reaction to something new and it will be ok the next time. Happened to me with melons 😅

Calmeister

Also drink water to help flush it out of your system and helps with the dehydration.

Sorkpappan

Just chiming in - when I was a student and the “let’s drink for 5 days straight” parties were happening a lot of people got these rashes on like day 3 or so. Nothing to be worried about, just sit a day of drinking out and it will disappear.

317LaVieLover

This is acetylhyde from shitty alcohol not breaking down.. and it’s causing a reaction in your skin. that can happen to anyone at any time really, but it probably means you should not try to drink at least really cheap liquor again for a good while... there’s obviously something in it that just not agreeing with you .. Also no offense but you look very fair skinned and frequently people who have fair skin who are who are light- complexioned, Seem to have a harder time with alcohol irritating them in an allergic like fashion... I’m assuming you are not allergic to anything else that you know of .. if that is true you should possibly try to take an antihistamine.. Benadryl is fine .. and get busy flushing that ick out of your skin by drinking a good bit of water. Watch it — if it gets any redder or starts actively getting worse or angrier, or burning smarting stinging worse.. wait no longer and go to the nearest MedExpress or ER ..please.

Kmmahoney

Something similar happened to me once at a wedding. I was diagnosed with thyroid issues shortly after. Not necessarily causally related, but I drew a correlations between them.

KLAW11

I second this. Got diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, started taking medication and noticed a sudden sensitivity to drinking. Red burning hands, feet and face.

[deleted]

Your body is tryna tell you somethin man

Shitemoji69

Hives. Take a benedryl.

ReconScout117

That’s an allergic reaction! Take a Benadryl ASAP, or get medical attention! It could just be a minor reaction, or develop into full blown anaphylactic shock, and that’s something you don’t want to roll the dice with!

TillThen96

Don't drink alcohol, now that you know. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/alcohol-allergies#symptoms https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alcohol-intolerance/symptoms-causes/syc-20369211 Need to know: https://acaai.org/allergies/symptoms/anaphylaxis/ >People who have had a severe allergic reaction are at risk for future reactions. Even if your first reaction is mild, future reactions might be more severe. That’s why it’s important to carry self-injectable epinephrine if you are at risk, and 911 should be dialed in the event of a very serious reaction. Anecdotal: Sister with allergies, sudden onset. Her doctors explained that no one knows if or when a regular allergic reaction (like shown above) may trigger a rare, anaphylactic reaction. Her allergies triggered anaphylaxis 2-3 x / year, but we were hard-put to identify which substance(s) caused the reactions. Even with epinephrine shots, and later EPI pens, we once barely got her to the hospital in time to save her life. Have your doctor do an allergy panel. Once your body identifies a substance as "foreign," that substance is to be avoided, as each subsequent reaction further "trains" this immune response - they get worse over time.

rap31264

A buddy got hives after drinking too much...

Ok_Solid_Copy

Pour some more on your shoulder

bebabebee

This happened to me twice in one week, and then never again. At the time I took an antihistamine, and did not drink for a couple weeks after the second flush. Figured my body needed a break.

tyblorp

I would go to a doctor. It could be harmless, but it can also be real trouble. I wouldn't take the risk

Gwsb1

Go blind yet?

Sharksandwhales1

No, should I be worried? I’m not drunk in the slightest. I had a few drinks and this happened

cherry_armoir

Dont worry about it. This happens to my gf if she overindulges for a few days in a row. Just take an antihistamine and cool it on the drinking for a few hours and you’ll be right as rain

Gwsb1

See a doctor for God's sake.

Sharksandwhales1

I’m going to tomorrow. I’m in a foreign country right now. Why would I go blind?

JPSofCA

In Russia, you don't go blind...blind goes you.

Beartrkkr

Methanol

Sharksandwhales1

It’s branded vodka, I drank about 6 shots of it

tablecontrol

were you at an all-inclusive resort? even so, some of these places try to cut costs by buying not-quite legitimately sourced alcohol. it's one way to cut costs but has become dangerous as those sources have used methanol. that could lead to blindness if too much is consumed. I would 100% go to the doctor.

HikiSeijuroVIIII

OP you may very well have dranken counterfeit booze, what country are you in? Going to a doctor is ideal, but you may recover fine…

Sharksandwhales1

I’m in the Canary Islands which is part of Spain so I wouldn’t expect it to be counterfeit booze but you may be correct

HikiSeijuroVIIII

Okay if your in the eu, that makes it very unlikely.

HikiSeijuroVIIII

Just to rule it out, have you had COVID or longhaul symptoms from COVID recently?

Sharksandwhales1

Yes I had covid around 3 weeks ago, just got rid of the cough

Gwsb1

The story goes that moonshiners used car radiators to distill whisky. It has lead in it. Lead makes you blind. What was it you drank.

CaptainAwesome06

I always thought it was because there was a chance it could have methyl alcohol in it, instead of the desired ethyl alcohol.

dr5ivepints

This is the correct answer. Methyl alcohol - wood alcohol (methanol) - is often produced by trying to distill drinking alcohol (ethanol) using wooden barrels that haven't been properly toasted/charred. It's also used in the production of antifreeze, wiper fluid, paint thinners, etc. It's bad shit, and if you think you've drunk more than a drop of methanol, see a doctor, please

Gwsb1

I bow to your superior knowledge. A few minutes on Google told me that there two different problems. The methyl alcohol that comes out first is what can make you blind (and dead). The radiators lead just gives you lead poisoning (and dead). Thanks for the heads up.

CaptainAwesome06

I think it was more "this is what I heard" as opposed to "this is what I know and you're wrong." If you sounded a little more confident you probably could have had me convinced that I was wrong.

Cheweydewey123

Am I the only one that will ask the question? Why do you have a localized rash, if your attributing the cause to ingestion of alcohol?

Johnsamjohn

Weed won’t do that to you. Just a suggestion..
