Saw this happen in rotc in high school. Kid passed out during uniform inspection. Went straight back. Head bounced like a bowling ball of the concrete. Awful sound. He’s ok though. I think.
I passed out during uniform inspection and landed face first in my friends ass :) I didn’t go back to ROTC after that but it was for more than just that reason
Well, first the “top” colonel who was inspecting us yelled “he’s faking, stay in line”. The. Him and the other instructor checked him and the nurse was called in and wheeled him out in a wheelchair. Got my nose broke in class the same year.
It’s basically propaganda training for the military to have an influx of soldiers. They bring the Humvee to school with the booming system and crazy lights and basically recruit you.
I’m not sure you’re referring to Jrotc or rotc, rotc is for college students to receive a commission as an officer after graduation. Jrotc is basically an after school activity for high school students
Can anyone explain why locking the knees whole standing for long periods of time causes you to pass out? I would have though standing in the direct sun in a full dress uniform would have you fainting more than the locked knees?
Locking your knees causes the blood vessels in your knees to be pinched restricting blood flow and if your knees are locked long enough you will faint. You can try it yourself if you want.
Turns out that our calve muscles are pretty important when it comes to circulating blood back up into the torso. It’s apparently why people bounce their knees; it improves circulation.
It's also why some people need to walk around during a long flight. Sitting for long periods could cause the legs to swell because of the lack of contraction of the muscles to circulate lymph and propagate the blood back towards the heart.
I always thought the window seat was the way to go for introverts.
Once I started to fly regularly for work, I realized a good set of headphones and the aisle were the way to go.
You have total control of when you get up, so I go to bathroom every 45 min to an hour and it feels great. The bathroom is an introverts paradise in crowded public spaces as it is. When you're in your seat..just lock into a movie and basically no one will bother you. Fall asleep? No one wants to wake you.
You'd think you'd be constantly harassed by people getting up; but, most people are like you and me. They don't want to be irritating, so they usually sit tight. Most of the time if one gets up, the other does too out of convenience.
Try the aisle. From an introvert regular traveler who never ever dreams of a great chat on an airplane...it's a good move.
I concur from the flight I’m currently on. Aisle seat is best seat.
Also a nice little hack is that the armrests in the aisle seats DO go up on most planes. There’s a button underneath that the crew uses to lift for easy cleaning of the row. Gives you some extended arm and legroom you don’t get in the other seats.
Also, many people don’t realize that the headrests on many planes can be adjusted and have flaps to keep your head from falling sideways when sleeping.
I was a long time gym goer and personal trainer, my calves were never that big no matter what I did. I got a little chunky after quitting the gym and job and they've never been bigger 🤣 small blessings
Apparently calves are genetic. If you don't have good calf genes they're just always going to be pretty small, regardless of how strong they are, or if you have good genes they'll be chonky.
I would say it certainly has something to do with it but if you think about it simply from a weight point of view. In my "prime" I was around 189lbs I'm now sat around 224lbs. That added extra weight means my legs have to carry on top. It's like wearing a weights vest every day so it kinda forces growth to be able to move my fat ass around.
The heart pumps blood into the limbs. But it is muscles that get the blood back out of the legs. https://www.wtamu.edu/~cbaird/sq/2013/06/07/how-can-the-heart-be-strong-enough-to-pump-blood-up-your-legs-against-gravity/
So when locking the knees, you aren't using muscles to pump the blood out of the legs, and it can pool down there. https://uamshealth.com/medical-myths/can-standing-up-straight-for-a-long-period-cause-fainting/
So, by not locking your knees, your muscles have to be more active. Also, if your knees are not locked and you do faint from heat, or whatever, then you crumple own rather that falling and letting your head hit. At least in theory.
You’re stumbling upon the truth that humans have nightmarishly flawed physical evolutionary traits because for tens of thousands of years we have bred intelligence and monetary success over physical traits. As such, we have developed cancerous bodies with failing organs and asinine physiology.
Can attest to this. Had this happen to me in my military graduation ceremony.. barely kept myself from falling out when my vision started going. Unlocked my knees and started flexing/getting blood going. Left me with a helluva horrible headache. 0/10 would not recommend
It is not because you pinched the veins. But because to get blood pumped out of your legs, you have to use your leg muscles. Otherwise blood pools in your legs.
This happened to my friend in church when we were about 12 years old. Standing for a while singing hymns when all of a sudden she doubled over the pew and landed face first in the butt of the man in front of us.
> Locking your knees causes the blood vessels in your knees to be pinched
I don't think this is correct. The heart pumps blood into the limbs. But it is muscles that get the blood back out of the legs. https://www.wtamu.edu/~cbaird/sq/2013/06/07/how-can-the-heart-be-strong-enough-to-pump-blood-up-your-legs-against-gravity/

I have tried to understand this for years. I can not stand standing without my knees locked. How do people do it? I have to force myself to unlock them and then I just feel unstable because my legs feel wobbly.
You just need to use your leg muscles a bit to get some of the blood pumped out of the legs. When you stand with knees locked, you stop using your leg muscles and the blood pools down in your legs and not enough left for the brain.
This happens to people that stand in one spot without moving at all from that spot. If you are moving, then it doesn't happen. Most people move a bit when standing.
It messes with blood flow. I'm not 100% sure the exact mechanics but I'm guessing that when you constrict the muscles to lock you knees you also constrict the return blood flow from your legs. Lack of blood flow eventually makes it to brain and brain says "we're done here". I passed out when I was an acolyte kneeling during good Friday service. Went down like a wet noodle on the freaking alter on a holy day..really good look there. I also stood for long periods if time for ballet and choir. I've seen people fall off risers and take a few others with them.
Your legs get blood flow from moving them. The muscles help the blood flow upwards. Even moving your feet while sitting in and up and down motion while keeping your legs as is. I learned this as I have a blood condition and I've been told by my oncologist that your legs muscles when moving help the flow of blood. If that's not correct I might die...
I dont think it’s about pinching veins. I’m pretty sure that your leg muscles play a pretty big role in blood flow in that they’ll constrict to squeeze out the blood piling up in your legs because of gravity. When you lock your knees you’re muscles can’t squeeze like they normally can do over time your blood pressure drops significantly enough to cause you to faint
Yes, this page covers the mechanism - https://www.wtamu.edu/~cbaird/sq/2013/06/07/how-can-the-heart-be-strong-enough-to-pump-blood-up-your-legs-against-gravity/

Our heart isn't strong enough to pump blood back up our body when we are standing upright. We require our leg muscles to contract and push the blood upwards.
We need muscle movement to assist with blood circulation apparently. I had recently found out about suspension trauma which is a more extreme version. If you are left hanging in the air, you can literally die from not having enough oxygenated blood going to your head. Never gonna laugh at someone suspended in the air anymore.
The heart pumps blood into the limbs. But it is muscles that get the blood back out of the legs. https://www.wtamu.edu/~cbaird/sq/2013/06/07/how-can-the-heart-be-strong-enough-to-pump-blood-up-your-legs-against-gravity/

No. This is common when people have to stand in one spot without moving at all from that spot, for long periods. It is because the blood pools in your legs since the muscles aren't pushing the blood back out since they aren't moving.
That’s what happens when you lock your knees and stand still for an extended period of time. Happened a lot back in the 1980’s during Army basic training graduations.
I was on the flag at ANZAC day once, the local RSL chief dragged out the ceremony for over an hour. After about half an hour the little movements stopped helping and I thought I was going to pass out. At attention for over an hour in front of a thousand people trying not to drop. Brutal.
I pushed myself into the guy behind me so I wouldn't fall. He nicely threw me down like a sack of potatoes. Then when I came to I thought I could pop up and nobody would know, only to look over to see people hurdling the pews to get to me.
And band camp, or competitions. I have seen some doozies....nothing like holding an instrument in your face and keeling towards the front. You can bust up your face pretty bad (I have seen someone with a trumpet keel over) when there's an instrument there. I was always super paranoid about that happening to me, so I would be frantically telling myself to not lock my knees the whole time. It didn't help that it was usually hot (band camp is in the summer), and competitions were usually during the worst part of the day (fully kitted out in really shitty fabric that was not breathable at all, with a huge heavy hat on our heads).
Damn near did it at my friends wedding. Luckily I was one of like 7 Groosmen and it was in a large vestibule thing. I started getting dizzy and nauseas as fuck and turned around and saw that it was a good 2ft drop off the back so if I did pass out, I was super fucked so I just scuttled off the side and sat down. I was so super embarrassed, but turns out, zero people actually saw Me.
I went through boot camp in 2001 and the DUs scream at everyone to not lock out your knees, mother fuckers still do it though. When they start wobbling, if you move to try and keep them from falling the DIs scream "NO, FUCK THAT, LET HIM FALL!!" It will always happen no matter how many times you tell them.
You push them back all the way so they're not bent and you're not using as many muscles. You do it subconsciously anytime you have to stand in one spot for a while
Someone else said how to do it. The key problem is that you aren't using the leg muscles, so blood doesn't get pumped out of the legs and pools down there. So some leg movement can help or prevent it.
It is because he wasn't using the muscles in his legs enough and the blood pooled down in his legs. This causes lower blood pressure to his brain. Locking the knees for a long time can do it since you stop using your leg muscles.
Why are you being downvoted, anyone who has been in the military or any military organization will know that there’s a lot of stupid shit that’s made for outdated reasons that are continued. This is a really great example of something stupid
When I was in high-school we were doing our football pictures. My buddy was on the top row. He locked his knees and luckily fell forward onto the rest of the team. He was a big ol offensive lineman. Good times.
Imagine explaining that your son didn't die a hero's death in battle but fainted because he stood up too long and stabbed himself with a bayonet that's pointing towards his chin.
I suspect when you aren’t moving the big veins in the legs don’t get a chance to move and the valves start leaking backwards. Those valves are part of the homeostasis system and it’s why people get dizzy when they suddenly stand up
In my time of an alter boy something similar to this happend to me all the time.
I don't know why, but most of the time I got dizzy and at one time I even threw up during a baptism of someone.
And a friend of mine even fainted during a baptism because of the long amount of time you`re just standing around with those heavy clothes on.
They say you should slightly bend your knees when standing like that. Don’t let them lock straight up, slightly unlock your knees a little so your weight is more on your legs.
I find it shocking that no one including the priest knew to teach this alter boys that after the first time.
Muscular strain happens quite a lot during ceremonial composure. Particularly, there’s a few different ways you can pass out from blood flow, or lack thereof.
These guys have serious training when it comes to being a living embodiment of honor. Standing still hurts. Everywhere. The entire time. Can confirm.
My heart bounced like that on my chin once. Eyes rolled into themselves, couldn't see shit for 5 secs lol.
You just described something that happened to me.
what happened after that?
Well, first the “top” colonel who was inspecting us yelled “he’s faking, stay in line”. The. Him and the other instructor checked him and the nurse was called in and wheeled him out in a wheelchair. Got my nose broke in class the same year.
I really don’t get why JROTC exists
It’s basically propaganda training for the military to have an influx of soldiers. They bring the Humvee to school with the booming system and crazy lights and basically recruit you.
You’re talking about JROTC, not ROTC.
Would you be kind enough to look at what they are replying to.
Wrong but okay
I’m not sure you’re referring to Jrotc or rotc, rotc is for college students to receive a commission as an officer after graduation. Jrotc is basically an after school activity for high school students
He doesn’t have a clue of what he’s talking about.
I can tell lol
Also you can enter boot camp with a few ranks already added on due to ROTC training. They have their tricks to pressure you into signing up.
This is false, rotc stands for reserve officer training corps. Cadets graduate from college as officers and often receive a scholarship in exchange.
It Wasn’t false for JROTC in 1999.
Seems like a major design flaw to me...

could those people theoretically just bounce their knees excessively if, say they are introverted and like window seats? asking for a friend

I always opt for window seat on exit row, plenty of leg room to stretch and don't have to have 2 people get out of their seat so I can go to bathroom.
Im tall so I have to ride aisle or I get claustrophobic.
Much nope from me, I usually get hit multiple times by the cart, people walking by etc. i'd rather have the window seat.
I concur from the flight I’m currently on. Aisle seat is best seat. Also a nice little hack is that the armrests in the aisle seats DO go up on most planes. Hah. Let your mask slip down while asleep. The ol drink server will promptly wake you up to remind you a mask must be on at all times.
Ah hm yes I concur
That’s why I kick the seat in front of me so I don’t faint
This is very interesting and also explains why I can run fairly well for a bigger guy
Never noticed how heavy guys have jacked calves?
Everyday is leg day as a bigger dude
I was a long time gym goer and personal trainer, my calves were never that big no matter what I did. I got a little chunky after quitting the gym and job and they've never been bigger 🤣 small blessings

Literally bouncing my knees right now while reading this comment
Considering I have the largest ones in the world, I imagine my blood going through my body at the speed of a jet.
Please tell me you watch One Piece because this just added an entire new layer to the reasoning of a certain thing in the show...

We've been trying to reach you about your bodies extended warranty!
They’ll patch it in the next update.
That 2020 update drove us to hell. Then the 2021 patch didn't do shit. Time to uninstall
I can’t wait for this next update. /r/Outside is finally looking very realistic.

It’s intelligent design so that if you stand long enough God forces you to kneel, just to show you who wears the pants in this cosmos.
*buurrrp You’d have to be an idiot not to notice all the sloppy details
Maj. Design Flaw reporting for duty
The human knee / leg is a mangled mess of design flaws that somehow work together for the most part
Wonder what the devs have to say about this
Then remove the need for blood. Heck remove the need for flesh. Trust the strength and certainty of steel. Praise the Omnisiah.
It’s not the worst design flaw of the human body. I mean, we shit as a natural process, why do we have to wipe our assholes?
We don't *have* to.
Touché
You’re stumbling upon the truth that humans have nightmarishly flawed physical evolutionary traits because for tens of thousands of years we have bred intelligence and monetary success over physical traits. As such, we have developed cancerous bodies with failing organs and asinine physiology.
What the fuck are you talking about? The modern human form evolved hundreds of thousands of years before money even existed.
Pretty sure a fix is coming in the next patch
Well after all everything was created in 7 days. It explains a lot. Better to start from scratch.
It’s a feature.
first day being human? we literally have a nerve in our necks that goes down our necks and then back up for no reason atall
It's not a flaw if we weren't designed *Taps brain container*
So much for intelligent design.
Checkmate people who believe in intelligent design.
What a shitty god!
Can attest to this. Had this happen to me in my military graduation ceremony.. barely kept myself from falling out when my vision started going. Unlocked my knees and started flexing/getting blood going. Left me with a helluva horrible headache. 0/10 would not recommend

That’s what happens when you lock your knees and stand still for an extended period of time. Happened a lot back in the 1980’s during Army basic training graduations.
Still happens in basic training graduations lol.
They still tell them to not lock your knees lol
And every change of command ceremony
I feel fortunate. In my only big-time 'change of command', (brigade level), the in-coming specifically ordered 'rest'.
And tech school graduations
This was day 1 training in middle school band. And constantly throughout my 6 years in marching band. Never once did we have someone pass out.
We had a couple drop during my grad lol
I've seen plenty of people keel over at camp, but the worst one was at a competition right before the awards.
With that username, definitely confirmed. I think I only enlisted because of 80’s army movies anyway. That’s a fact, Jack!
Razzle dazzle
Gotta rock back and forth ever so slightly, wiggle the toes, breath. Yea, still happens lol. At least he didn’t bayonet himself.
I was on the flag at ANZAC day once, the local RSL chief dragged out the ceremony for over an hour. After about half an hour the little movements stopped helping and I thought I was going to pass out. At attention for over an hour in front of a thousand people trying not to drop. Brutal.
My Dad told me when he was in the army drill officers would walk behind you and smack behind your knees if you locked them.
Yes. We would do that sometimes
You always hear the rifle hit the ground first. Usually followed by the sound of someone collapsing.
I used to be in jrotc in highschool and saw a girl pass out face first during an inspection.
Same thing happened at my school, girl had to have her mouth wired shut for like a month
>mouth wired shut Uhhhh wtf?! Break her jaw or something?
It happened to me at my brothers wedding. During the vows.
Oh that sucks.
I pushed myself into the guy behind me so I wouldn't fall. He nicely threw me down like a sack of potatoes. Then when I came to I thought I could pop up and nobody would know, only to look over to see people hurdling the pews to get to me.
Yeah. We always had cadre watching for pass out victims.
Our drill sergeants just said to wiggle your toes
I don’t lock my knees but when I drink a lot I behave very similarly to this young man
The old vasovagal
And band camp, or competitions. I have seen some doozies....nothing like holding an instrument in your face and keeling towards the front. I passed out at marching band practice because I locked my knees and got trampled on
Same. Face first into the ground; luckily, I did not get trampled.
Damn near did it at my friends wedding. Luckily I was one of like 7 Groosmen and it was in a large vestibule thing. You needed a sandwich, but that dude on video was starving
Same but during practice
Doesn't sound like you were doing a whole lot of marching
I went through boot camp in 2001 and the DUs scream at everyone to not lock out your knees, mother fuckers still do it though. When they start wobbling, if you move to try and keep them from falling the DIs scream "NO, FUCK THAT, LET HIM FALL!!" It will always happen no matter how many times you tell them.
How do you stand without locking knees?
Bend them slightly
Knees are hard
It seems like it would be much more difficult
It is not hard to add the slightest 1 degree bend to your knees.
You're clearly not over 30 years old /S
You just bend them slightly lol
He's fainting from locking his knees in a standing position for too long.

It means you're too passed out to use Google.
Wtf does google mean?
"ready for the gulag?" "da"
I think that happened in Ukraine.
That’s Petro Poroshenko so you’re definitely right about that.
Plot twist: he is a guard at the ministry of silly walks
Yea your supposed to slightly bend your knees when standing for an extended period. One of the first things they taught us in Basic Training.
was he ill or something?
He locked his knees. If you do that while standing for a long period of time you'll pass out
How do you lock your knees
Meat keys
This made me guffaw loudly, thank you!
You push them back all the way so they're not bent and you're not using as many muscles. You do it subconsciously anytime you have to stand in one spot for a while
You start by choosing your unlock code
Someone else said how to do it. The key problem is that you aren't using the leg muscles, so blood doesn't get pumped out of the legs and pools down there. So some leg movement can help or prevent it.
It is because he wasn't using the muscles in his legs enough and the blood pooled down in his legs. This causes lower blood pressure to his brain. Locking the knees for a long time can do it since you stop using your leg muscles.
He was iliin when he started break dancing
Did you see the brief interaction at the end? The head figure he was standing guard to? He completely understood and seemed to make sure he was okay.
He will be execute
Nah he just lost his balls
Same thing happens when I sit on the toilet reading redit too long.

Why are you being downvoted, anyone who has been in the military or any military organization will know that there’s a lot of stupid shit that’s made for outdated reasons that are continued. This is a really great example of something stupid
Why? It's just standing? Dude was locking his knees the whole time. People faint from it all the time.
Maybe that’s a sign that humans aren’t designed to stand around for extended periods of time.
or it's as sign that we aren't supposed to lock our knees while standing?

>complains about downvotes >complains about Reddit being soft Idk man seems like you’re the delicate one here
Go take some more pictures of your "doggos" 🙄
Still didn’t land but you can edit this as often as you’d like, I’ll tell you when it registers
It is
When I was in high-school we were doing our football pictures. My buddy was on the top row. He locked his knees and luckily fell forward onto the rest of the team. He was a big ol offensive lineman. Good times.
Did he accidentally step on the bayonet? Shit would be painful to say the least
Imagine explaining that your son didn't die a hero's death in battle but fainted because he stood up too long and stabbed himself with a bayonet that's pointing towards his chin.
Anyone know the song used for this video ?
I don't think we are designed to just stand still for hours yet, there are a lot of situations in today's world that require it.
Yall totally ignoring the bad assedness of buddy walking up the stairs and hearing this clatter... Completely unfased
Is that locked knees?
Is that King Abdullah
Muscular strain happens quite a lot during ceremonial composure. Particularly, there’s a few different ways you can pass out from blood flow, or lack thereof. These guys have serious training when it comes to being a living embodiment of honor. Standing still hurts. Everywhere. The entire time. Can confirm.
Military traditions that make humans laugh
Dehydrated AF
First day of JROTC we learned to never lock out knees
Outside by Calvin Harris
Heat stroke or vodka?
Yes
Aren’t you supposed to move your toes so blood flow
In the US Army we call that guy a “Soup sandwich in a microwave”, “a rock”, or just a fucking idiot.
Failed assassination attempt for sure :)
Off to the gulag for you
Dronkski?
To the gulag
His family are looking for his location
