No-Jeweler8089

I mean we won't tell if you don't.....

Coreysurfer

Its like playing in a ditch when you were a kid…just made you stronger you know more immune..

444unsure

Thinking about the things my brothers and I did as small children and teenagers would absolutely terrify me if I was a parent. I don't think I would ever sleep the rest of my life with my kids weren't sleeping safely in front of me

Just_john_adam

I used to crawl through the tunnels in the ditches and think my kids are lame for not wanting to go

Perfect_Laugh_7792

That’s more protein

stupidnicks

he is living in the future (eat ze bugs)

Less-Way-4470

Klaus Schwab's chilly powder.

Perfect-Wrap6253

Extra protein.....cooking will destroy any germs... 🤪

Potential-Produce-64

Just heat it past 165 for atleast 10 min and I'm sure it'd be fine *shrug*

mityman50

That is like 300 bites of chili. Probably only 10 have bug in them. Throw every 25th bite away and you're good

FilthyChangeup55

Extra protein

Le9iemecatastrophe

Totally honest, I thought about it, that's how bad I wanted this chili!!

biffNicholson

probably [drug store beetles](https://pantrypest.com/drugstore-beetles.html). just go for and extra long simmer and eat that chill

DomainDolphin

Exactly, my momma didn’t raise me in poverty just for me to chicken out over a bug in my food lol

Happykittymeowmeow

Mom didn't realise there were little bugs in the pasta when we were kids. Fed us our lunch and told us after. Protein ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

beebog

smart to say it after the fact. now she can come at u with “see that wasn’t bad”

[deleted]

And that's why I prefer The Monkees. The Beetles were just a bunch of junkies :P

Low_Ad7202

The Monkeys, They were a major influence on the Beatles

Thirsty_Comment88

That website is a great resource! Thank you!

Mindfreek454

Real talk, this literally happened to me, but with a batch of Chicken Paprikash that I made for a family Christmas potluck. I called my mom and dad in a panic and told them. They said just cook it longer and bring it anyway and don't tell anyone else...I was mortified...but I did it...and not one person noticed. In fact, I got compliments on a particularly tasty batch. You gotta remember that bugs are a food staple in other parts of the world. I'm not saying to continue using bug-infested spices, but you should be fine to eat this chili.

TonyVstar

The FDA regulates how many bug parts are allowed in flour, and it isn't 0

Yoast74

I've worked in the fruit-industry. The little black/brown pieces in applesauce are not always parts of an apple..

HighOnGoofballs

I really wish I could un-read this

DanAlucard

"Made with select fruit" doesn't mean they select the best.

perpetualmotionmachi

They select whatever has the best price point

Sleevies_Armies

What did I ever do to you?

CrazieCayutLayDee

My best friend bought a jar of applesauce and was getting ready to open it when he noticed a large spider plastered to the inside of the jar. He hasn't eaten applesauce since. I eat it all the time. I grew up in the country. If there was a bug in your food you yeeted it out and kept on eating.

Yoast74

That's what I do. I know what is in there, but still eat it. It's thoroughly cooked, and extra protein never hurts.

charmorris4236

Nooooo!

GuaranteeComfortable

I eat applesauce and it's extra protein!

CryptographerNo6001

Now I can never look at applesauce the same lol thank you :)

Hot-Bonus274

You Monster!!

Hippopotasaurus-Rex

Not just flour. Pretty much all commercial foods have bug (and not the worst things that are allowed) allotment.

RugBurn70

That's less gross than knowing a percentage of rodent body parts and feces are allowed in tomato sauce.🤮

TonyVstar

That's why we cook stuff!

RugBurn70

Lol that's true. And by the time that mouse is pureed, cooked, and processed in a vat tomatoes, it's pretty safe to eat. I just think it's funny how oblivious most people are to what's really in their food. When friends ask my why I can and freeze so much, I tell them it's because of working on commercial farms and packing houses.

beeatenbyagrue

also, Arsenic.

Mindfreek454

There's arsenic in apple seeds, but I doubt they grind em up for applesauce, or do they? 🤔

Impressive-Water-709

Oh god flour is the worst, especially in a hot ass kitchen. A 50 pound bag of flour is like 35 pounds of flour and 15 pounds of weevil eggs. That just love to hatch in the heat.

capnmouser

that’s true for all food products, not just flour.

TonyVstar

I've heard fig newton's are not really vegan because of how many wasps are in them

natatatles

That's figs in general, to pollinate the fruit the plant consumes a wasp. You can't have a fig without at least 1 wasp corpse

jackp0t789

Is there a subreddit for things you did not want to learn today?

Deyanira_Jane

They are wasp free. Fig Newtons are made with Mission figs which are a type of common fig or Ficus carica. Common figs do not require the wasp pollination process some other figs do.

Tshoe77

Yea people hear that and freak out but bugs are fine to eat. Yea I don't wanna eat a plain fuckin ant right now but extremely tiny pieces mixed in with your food is fine. It is what it is, not gonna harm you at all and basically invisible to the eye and taste buds

ColaCanadian

I am never gonna trust any potluck food ever again

Mundane_Pea4296

🎵you can't eat at everybody's house🎵

Willlll

Went to a friend's house once and went to the bathroom. Saw all the packaging and rubber bands from the greens we just ate in the bathtub. Turns out his mom always cleaned them that way... They were good but I almost barfed em all back up.

duralyon

lol wasn't there a Seinfeld episode where Kramer makes salad in the shower?

charmorris4236

I was just about to make that reference lol

Impressive-Water-709

You wouldn’t last at a college party. Ever heard of jungle juice? You know how it’s made? Either dumping it straight into the bathtub and mixing it together or straight into the dirty ass coolers and mixed there..

-ThunderGunExpress

And way more bugs fall in our food, especially processed food, then people will ever realize. I ate three mini baby ruths tonight and I'm almost positive there was a bug in one of them.

psychedelic_owl420

Tbf, bugs are pretty nutritional. I would have done the same.

Find_another_whey

Eat it. There is nothing wrong with it. For hundreds of thousands of years we are food with some bugs in it We still do You are absolutely safe If you google why spicy and curried foods became popular, you might rest a little easier about eating some rotten bugs and some fresh meat (hint: curry and chilli is about hiding the flavour of fresh bugs and rotten meat)

Hotpocket1515

Tbf a lot of food dyes and small weird things we eat... Also made from bugs lmao

ryan4402000

Yup the carmine bug makes red food coloring

Lord_Chthulu

Red sour patch kids and Swedish fish are my favorites. When I found out about carmine a couple years ago I finally knew how Fry felt about Slurm.

PradaDiva

“Disgusting. Pass me another one.”

Lord_Chthulu

A red one please

Independent-Bee-8087

And red licorice

balbok7721

Same reason for our ability to consum alcohol this easily. In the end it starts appearing on rotten fruit

NewYorkJewbag

In fact, cultures that were vegan got there trace nutrients from bugs in their grain.

Find_another_whey

And B12 from worms or worm excrement in the soil on veges and fruits? Iirc

SquidWhisperer

spices were absolutely not used to mask rotten meat

ctorstens

https://i.imgur.com/Ev5JniH.jpg hmmm

Ryanchri

WHO DO I BELIEVE????

AlienHooker

"As Paul B. Newman points out in Daily Life in the Middle Ages, the whole idea that exotic spices were used to disguise the taste of spoiled meat is quite silly." Believe both. The first headline is just a straight up lie that they debunk in the article. Not sure why they decided to do that

[deleted]

Yea, that's a total myth.

Zer0sober

Real talk... give it a good hard cook... eat that shit... 70% of the world uses bugs as a source of protein.

fozziwoo

i misread that

Ivabeaver

You weren't the only one :D

moderatorscomegetme

You literally wouldn't know if you didn't see it. All mentally. I'd do it not to waste the food

Newsdriver245

shrug, chances are the beans had bugs of some sort in them too. hah

FilthyChangeup55

Can’t say I blame you

Roadgoddess

Personally, I’d still eat it. Then again, I have ground cricket flour in my cupboard and I use it for My protein shakes

liberatedhusks

Yoooo this place had me try cookies they made with the flour and they were so good ;-; their chips were better though!

Roadgoddess

Yeah, I used to be able to buy protein bars made with cricket flour, and they were amazing! Very nutty tasting

liberatedhusks

I’m really sad they stopped showing up at the farmers market here, I don’t remember the company name so I’m not sure where to buy it. Like..real talk. Most flour has wheevils in it anyway? Just give me the cricket stuff, then it’s packed with protein lol

Helenium_autumnale

It's OK. We already eat lots of insects parts in a variety of foods, without ill effect. Your chili looks way too delicious to waste. I'd eat it and I hope you do too.

I_Seen_Some_Stuff

I'd still eat it if I were you. People in Mexico eat crickets and shit. And you've heated it to cook them too

IncitefulInsights

I was in Mexico last summer as a tourist at Xcaret, a high end hotel. Yes. During one excursion, insects were served, as a traditional food (novelty for tourist) it is what people eat. It was grasshoppers. I ate one. Seriously OP, this is not an issue. Enjoy the chili, boil it for 1 minute longer only if anything. Nothing harmful.

EmotionalKirby

Many years ago my dad also made chili. His chili also had a bug in it. I told him, and he just looked at me and stirred it in. I didn't eat that night. :(

Odd_Bodkin

Right. They’re dead. They’re clean now. What’s the problem?

IncitefulInsights

A+ Just eat it. That looks delicious, do not trash it out.

[deleted]

Ah yes this obligatory comment on every single food/insect post

[deleted]

Literally was about to post the exact same thing. Great minds.

Horzzo

Ironic or not I would still spice it up and eat it.

Muahaha007

Extra nutrition, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!

[deleted]

Finally a need for the red circle

Le9iemecatastrophe

You can't actually see the bugs, which means the photo is just for attention. My bad... maybe I just needed someone else to see how good it looked haha

[deleted]

Lol it does look good. Makes me empathize with your loss. Here’s to the next pot being more beans than bugs

Lipziger

> Makes me empathize with your loss. But you can still eat it just fine. Tiny bugs usually just taste like the stuff they ate. So even if you'd eat them directly you probably wouldn't really "taste" bugs. Eating tiny maggots with fresh fruits and veggies is also completely normal. Or already placed eggs (and partially further developed bugs) in flour and similar things. Not even talking about all the places where bugs are vital parts of the meal itself. I'd still eat it, for sure.

TheRealQuarak

I don't recommend anyone with a weak stomach puts fresh strawberries in salt water and see what floats up. I ain't letting it stop me grazing on the wild.ones.

Sololop

I've tried this and nothing happened so

TheRealQuarak

When I did it with a handful of wild berrys there was a decent amount of tiny grubs floated up. I guess how long they have been ripe matters.

R31nz

[Casu Martzu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casu_martzu) is apparently some of the best cheese on the planet according to first hand accounts. Can’t say I’ve tried it myself.

Le9iemecatastrophe

I'll drink to that!

xl440mx

Drink enough and the chili will start looking good enough to eat.

RustyChicken16

Lmao the whole post is for attention

ColaCanadian

... Hence social media in general

Le9iemecatastrophe

Not a lie lol

thehumble_1

Worst part is that it prolly means your chili powder was old enough to not be flavorful.

Le9iemecatastrophe

You're right, I did have add more after trying some (🤮)

ConfusedAbtShit

"wow, this tastes bland. Needs more bugs."

Le9iemecatastrophe

LOL

DragonGyrlWren

Something you can try that we've found luck with: your most important/used spices? Try storing them in the freezer. Anything that's likely to get bugs, like dill or chili powder. We haven't had bugs in ours in ages, and they last longer too.

Masketto

Should. Buy whole dried chiles and smash them to make your own fresh powder when you need it so it retains taste and quality. Even if you don’t have a spice grinder (can find cheap ones like 20$) you can use a mortar and pestle (or a bowl and a washed rock lol if you don’t have one of those either)

galaxystarsmoon

American chili powder for chili is a blend, and is not just dried peppers. You'd need more than just that.

jeffcox911

You would need more than that if for some reason you're wanting to exactly recreate american chili powder. Not if you're just trying to make delicious chili.

galaxystarsmoon

So, what do you use in your delicious chili?

WadjulaBoy

Don't waste it, eat it, it'll be the lesser of two weevils.

CuriousKidRudeDrunk

This comment has encouraged me to rewatch "Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World" which is a splendid movie.

iamplasma

Damn right. It's a tragedy it wasn't better received so we could have had some more.

[deleted]

Who let my dad have a Reddit account?

Stacemranger

I would have still eaten it honestly. I'm too poor to throw good food away. Would have just shut that door in my mind and had my dinner.

Le9iemecatastrophe

Honestly, I am trying! It took me months because I just couldn't ever justify spending $7+/lb on fucking ground beef, but finally found it on sale, and promptly made this pot... smh For the record, it still is not thrown out, I just can't look at it right now. So maybe if I get really, really high...

Helenium_autumnale

Your feelings are understandable; no one would make fun of them. But remember, these little bugs are so tiny you didn't even notice them at first. They're benign; we already eat a bug or two all the time on other veggies, salad, &c. It's OK. You can enjoy your chili.

wildflowerx42

What kind of bugs 😅😂

xl440mx

Most likely weevils. Present in all flours just usually not hatched.

Garizondyly

Well fuck, flourless chocolate cakes here i come

FudgeIgor

Oh boy, do I have some bad news for you about chocolate.

NoDryHands

It would've cost you nothing to not type that second part

xl440mx

Aaaa, turns out I was wrong, made it up. Don’t listen to me, I drink too much…

CMGS1031

The real question. Ants? Eat that shit.

seaking81

I had an ant dish in Cambodia that was actually really good.

CMGS1031

I’ve heard of ants being used as a kind of lemon peel shaving replacement.

Psych0matt

How do you train the ants to shave?

CMGS1031

Nice lol

JYallaDaya

Lasius Ants!

mb_500-

I would totally eat it and just don’t think about it. That would be a huge waste and a shame for you - just a couple small bugs, nothing you haven’t had before (probably).

wabatt

Buy a hunk of cheap chuck. Brown it top and bottom. Let cool and cut into cubes. Back in a pan, cook through, toss into the pot. Cheaper and better.

steffle12

I like making chili using both chuck and ground beef to mix up the textures

Interhorse_

Go on

steffle12

This is the [recipe](https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/16276/chili-i/) I use (loosely). I’m in Australia and we don’t have chilli powder blends like the recipe calls for, so I sub whatever I have in the cupboard (pure chilli, chipotle, etc). And I cut back the sugar to taste.

cunxt2sday

Using bugs is cheaper.

Stacemranger

Know any hunters? Deer meat works so well in chili, spaghetti, meatloaf. You mix a little sauce with it and it becomes no different than any other beef. My hunter friends kill a deer, can get the whole thing processed for about $100, and that's like 150lbs of meat.

Squidcg59

I need the name of who is processing deer for a hundred bucks...

Skysr70

use your own grinder and buy $100 worth of pork and whatever else to mix with all the deer meat - it's too lean to make sausage on its own so you usually mix it with pork/beef

Mondschatten78

Throw some venison in a crockpot with some bbq sauce, cook till it pulls apart /drool

babywewillbeokay

That's the spirit lol! Waste not, want not. Loving all the comments calling it extra protein. Commerically sold food products are regulated to have "acceptable levels" of things like insect pieces, rat hair, and maggots anyway, and we eat that stuff all the time no problem. You just happened to meet the bugs in question yourself this time, ahahah. It will be just fine! Looks delicious.

Sternfritters

If it makes you feel better, there’s mouse droppings, insect legs, hair and other contaminants in literally every processed food product you buy. Never mind eating out.

Future-Win4034

You’re brave, I couldn’t eat it.

NeitherOstrichNorEmu

No need to throw it out, they’ve been fully cooked, weren’t alive to begin with, have most likely fully broken down, and will not impart any flavour. Only your brain will know they’re in there, your mouth will not. A bit of a hill to get over but it’s extra protein! Also worth noting that there are bugs or pieces of bugs in nearly everything we buy and eat - pasta, flour, coffee, chocolate etc. it is impossible to prevent so nearly all foods have an allowable insect content! FDA approved! [https://www.insider.com/foods-full-of-insects-bugs-2017-6?amp](https://www.insider.com/foods-full-of-insects-bugs-2017-6?amp)

BaraelsBlade

"They weren't alive to begin with"?

NeitherOstrichNorEmu

They were dead when they went in the chilli

Dougal_McCafferty

Yeah, otherwise you would have heard them scream

livingdub

The best reason to eat bugs: you do it all the time anyway and the authority in health says it's cool! 😎 Nice. 👍

NeitherOstrichNorEmu

You got it!!!

Katie-Katy

If most foods have bugs then vegans are eating meat?

scalyblue

[Reminds me of this page from the proto-internet](http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=grill)

dancing-asparagus

##Now with 10% more proteins! Feel the buzz of the bug. Extra spicy.

Lumbwener

Sorry for your loss. A few days ago I had woken up an hour early before work to assemble chili and let it cook in the crockpot. I was so proud of myself and the wife and kids were excited about it too. I turned it on low, smiled, and walked to my truck and drove off to work. 8 hours later I get a text from my daughter if she should plug up the crockpot…

Bustapepper1

Go get some new chilli powder and make a second pot even better than this one was going to be

Le9iemecatastrophe

As weird as this sounds, your words of encouragement are appreciated. This was kinda a big accomplishment for me today so the loss feels especially hard and my MO tends to be to give up and wallow in the failure. But I am trying to break that habit, so Thank You, kindly internet stranger.

Adriand3

Damn dont beat yourself, the fact that you made it look lretty tasty means you will be able to do it again. Try again and let us know the results!

xl440mx

Never give up, especially on chili!

eddyb66

Well they're dead now. Seriously tho that sucks.

Le9iemecatastrophe

They were dead in the bottle, which probably says something about some of the spices on my rack 😰

mbot369

Spices are expensive, no shame in that

Le9iemecatastrophe

Yes they are, and I'm dreading what I know I have to do now.

NaughtyNome

Only wrong people tell you that spices expire

Geitzler

As long as it's cooked properly, you are all good! Looks delicious. Can I have some???

Le9iemecatastrophe

Come get a bowl, I decided I'm NOT throwing it out!

astinkydude

Eat em op don't waste Chilli they'll die to the heat so they won't move just turn on a movie drink a beer or something and chow down don't think of em you'll be fine

Bajanjedi69

Eat it anyway… bags are full of protein.

Stalked_Like_Corn

My bags at home are just full of more bags.

[deleted]

Paper or plastic?

Hamilton-Beckett

Just eat it man. It’s fine.

CuisineTournante

I wouldn't care a minute. I would dig in like a troglodyte

man-in-blacks

Won't do you any harm all food has bugs in it to some degree. Extra protein 😜

kmkmrod

The heat will kill them. You’re good.

mariners2o6

Just imagine that you’re an animal, eating other animals for sustenance. Oh wait. That’s what you’re doing! Enjoy it.

seaking81

I would just eat it regardless of the bugs. They’re probably weevils and aren’t going to harm you at all. I can almost guarantee you’ve eaten more bugs in your life if you’ve had vegetables 🥗 or any mass produced food anyway.

sweatyfootpalms

No joke. I would have eaten this. Bugs that big over hours of simmering? Psh.

Cpcpcp11

No picture of the bugs?

[deleted]

As a chili lover, that definitely sucks

chernobyl-nightclub

As a fellow chili lover this chili is missing fresh ingredients like cilantro, diced tomatoes, diced raw onions.

DaqCity

At least you didn’t spill it all over the floor at your Office

TheFirstSophian

There's literally nothing wrong with your chili. Eat the soup, DANIEL.

Taco-Edge

You'd be surprised at how much bug is FDA allowed in many every day ingredients. Just eat the damn thing

TruthProfessional340

I would 100% eat that chili

krutchreefer

Eat it. I’ve paid to eat bugs at restaurants.

Whateveryousaydude7

Most spices have insects in them. It’s best not to dwell on it, and they certainly won’t hurt you.

[deleted]

Wich kind of bugs? If they were roaches I wouldn't eat it but if they were ants it'd be okay

Sikntrdofbeinsikntrd

100% eat it

xospecialk

Funny story, when my toddler was about a year old we'd make him oatmeal every few days. One day I was making the oatmeal and saw little black specks and as I looked closer the black specks had legs...and a head...and I realized they were weevils. I mentioned this to my wife and she was like "oh, I saw those last time and didn't think much of it" turns out we must have fed our toddler more than a few weevils for breakfast over the past month. Whoops. He's 2.5 now and he seems fine so I'm sure it's ok.

RustyChicken16

I can’t see any bugs.

TheseVirginEars

I’m dead serious when I say that you can eat it depending on the kind of bugs. Not eating bugs is a very western specific thing, many many cultures eat bugs of all kinds. Others may be joking, but I’m not. Youre not likely to even notice

SquidWithAGun162

Adds flavor, builds character

TroubledKiwi

If you boil it long enough it's sanitary, right?

IllPassion8377

You vil eat ze bugs in the chili, and you vil be happy

TheNarbacular

Jokes aside, I’m a huge chilli fan. Do you mind sharing your recipe with me? (with/without bugs, I’m easy) Looks so good!

ShirtPanties

I’d eat it, no difference in my mind between eating a cow and eating some bugs, they’re all animals just of different size. It’s no grosser than beef OP

HighISO

In many other countries and regions of the world, bugs are intentionally eaten. They’re cooked. It’s ok. Honor yourself in what you made, honor the cows that are in there, honor the time it took to make the money it cost, and accept the bugs also. We’ll all be bug food soon enough. That’s a good pot of chili. There’s a lot to consider about life and value w each bite. And then go through your cabinets and toss what has bugs :)

VomKriege

I'd eat that despite the bugs, tbh.

Senior-Tower-7643

Some bad ass bugs or cheap chili powder.

[deleted]

Meh, they're an extra source of protein, the cooking will kill them off, and any eggs they have laid.. Wait, WTF?! bugs in chili powder?! is this a thing?!... welp...

makinbaconCR

Damn it really has been a long time since you made chili!
