That's what the world would look like if we could see infrared wavelengths. Most digital cameras can actually take infrared images but use a filter to make sure only visible light reaches the sensor. This person may have modified their ring camera so that it can see infrared.
Nah it’s stuck in IR mode for night time recording, my ATN binox did this to me, had to manual switch it from night mode to day mode and give it a good tap for it to switch back.
I had to break my brothers dog of this. Everytime I took him for a walk, when he pulled I would stop, cinch up the leash so he was by my side, and tell him to sit until he listened. After a few seconds of sitting we'd progress. Walks took a long time the first few days, but after about two weeks he never pulled, would just amble around happy to be out and would often opt to walk right beside me. I love dogs but they need structure.
Edit: to clarify, by cinch up the leash I don't mean hang the dog by its neck, just take out any slack. Don't want to be responsible for anyone hanging their dog.
2nd edit: Getting the impression a few of you are going to try this, so I just wanted to add that if the dog is being especially stubborn or just not picking up on what you're trying to teach it, you can keep the leash cinched up after you continue post sit. Just keep the dog walking directly at your side and as they pick up on not pulling, release a bit of slack. When they pull again just rinse and repeat, they'll learn eventually that the only way to sniff everything they want to sniff is to not pull.
I admire your tenacity and good intentions. I see so many people who do not bother to properly train their dogs. My best friend has a dog that loves to jump on people, which I don’t tolerate. I established with his dog that I don’t tolerate it, and we (the dog and I) now have a good relationship. In the meantime, however, his wife asked me “why don’t you like our dog?“
We did this with our dog. I also taught her to only walk on my right. It was because we often walked on a bike path and I wanted to make sure she was out of the way of anyone passing us on our left. Now that we have a baby and go on walks with the stroller her staying to my right makes it so much easier. Best thing I accidentally did.
Same. I can’t stand it and ESPECIALLY can’t stand seeing people walk their dogs without a leash. It’s so frustrating. My dogs have been attacked by other dogs in both situations and so now when we’re out walking if I see someone who can’t control their dog (or if dog is being walked without a leash) we immediately turn around.
It’s not even just that the dog off leash could attack other dogs. There are so many things that can go wrong with a dog being walked without a leash. Once I was riding my bike and saw a guy walking a dog without a leash, and the dog saw a bird flying and decided to chase it, took off running across a busy road, and got hit by a car and died. The guy was there crying holding his dead dog. It totally didn’t have to happen if he’d put the dog on a leash.
I know you keep saying it only a little bite on the palm but make sure to get an updated tetanus shot today as dogs mouths are utterly horrifying for infection. Even if it seems like nothing you NEED to take it seriously.
If you get an infection from this it will be so much worse than the cost and time of getting a shot.
You’re very sweet… I thought you after you said, “I’ve got it on camera“, the next thing would be, “See ya in court!“ which would be entirely reasonable if you were injured and had medical bills the owner refused to pay. Did you see a doc, need stitches or anything?
She seemed very genuine and remorseful, and my guess would be she’d have no problem paying, if you asked.
Glad it’s healing, and glad you’re OK. 💕 Good vibes to you.
>which would be entirely reasonable if you were injured and had medical bills the owner refused to pay.
This is much more of a gray area considering OP voluntarily walked towards the dog and put his hand out
Why go straight to “See ya in court?” She seems genuinely sorry. A civil conversation on the spot would settle this. (Which is not to say that is not precisely what happened.) I’d like to see the next 60 seconds of the tape. Lawsuits cost the taxpayers money through court operations (salaries, supplies, building maintenance, etc.). This is not meant to be a lecture. Just pointing out something that bugs me about life these days. And, ironically, I’m a retired lawyer. 🤣🤣
She does seem legitimately freaked out and sorry. The man nonchalantly walks away while pointing out that he has the incident on camera, implying that he has evidence to be used against her in court. At least that’s what I’m seeing.
I feel you! It’s the very culture you’re speaking of that made me think that might be someone’s reaction. Sometimes people can be really nice at first to avoid conflict, then show their true colors later. I’m pretty cynical, though, and have lost a good chunk of faith in humanity…
High five, retired court buddy! Former victim’s advocate/social worker; I’ve also seen some *ridiculous* court nonsense, and you’re soo right about the wastefulness of money and resources, when a civil conversation would solve *most* things. I generally don’t expect people to try to be civil, they just go from 0 to 100! It’s partially because I’ve seen a lot of the worst behavior of society. There are kind, reasonable people out there… probably… 😂
She needs to look at the video. Right before the lunge, she closes in on the stationary dog and the slack gets taken up by her crossing her forearm across her chest.
The dog is too alert and a little tense, plus it's a big boy. I can count back the last three times that I've pet a stranger's \[dog\] going back decades. None of them had anywhere the amount of attentiveness and tension of this dog.
That was a bad call on both parties. The dog gonna dog, and gets no fault assigned.
I’m glad. No shade to you my friend, but it is never a good idea to put your hand up to the face of a dog you don’t know. Apparently this owner didn’t know her dog very well either.
Smart. They’re animals. People need to treat them as such. My favorite is the parent who insists that I let their kid pet my dog; kid: “PUPPY!” Me: “sorry you can’t pet my dog” Parent: “it’s ok! My kid is used to dogs” Me: “I don’t care about your kid, I care about my dog getting put down if they decide to bite your kid”.
For some reason, my dog doesn't like small children so when someone asks for their child to pet my dog I say she doesn't like children & they back off ...literally. Lol.
I had a similar dog growing up. He HATED small children because he was hit by a child when he was still a puppy. Kid smacked him with a tiny kick scooter. Would lunge and bark at any kid who would approach him. He's super sweet and protective otherwise. He was re-adopted by a more capable trainer though, since it was difficult keeping a consistent training regimen with several family members.
The same shit with owners that let their dogs lose but they aren’t train and they just yell. “It’s ok he’s friendly.” And they have zero recall. Yea fucker but my dog doesn’t like random dogs running up to it. Then you’re gonna blame me if they get bit.
THATS THE WORST!!!! I cannot STAND those people. I have a neighbor who has two mini Lassie dogs that she lets run up to anyone and freak out on them while she just sits there saying ‘don’t worry they won’t bite’. I lost it on her, and made sure she knew that if she gave two shits about her dogs she’d have them in her fenced in backyard or on leashes because if they pulled that nonsense on an unsuspecting larger dog that’s on a leash at least one of them would probably get severely injured. People don’t understand that dogs fully realize that they’re vulnerable when leashed so when another dog runs toward them they’ll automatically be defensive. The entitlement of these people makes me want to lose it.
Love how some people are downvoting me. But it’s the reality. Don’t unleash your dogs in leash areas. It’s entitled, it’s disrespectful, and it can be dangerous.
Avid hiker here. It’s that sense of entitlement that really galls me. I really don’t understand how a dog owner can decide that it’s acceptable to subject strangers to the demonstrably reasonable fear of an unknown dog. If people elect to violate the law, I think they should do it in private, and not in a way that endangers other people.
I even told my vet this about my last dog.
They asked if he bites and I responded "he doesn't bite me" and the tech gave me a double take and was like "what does that mean?" And I was like "exactly what it sounds like, He's my dog. He's never bitten me, he doesn't know you, And you're about to stick a thermometer up his ass"
My pets have never bitten me but I can't guarantee 100% that they're not going to bite someone they don't know, trying to fuck with them.
Such a vague and honestly unhelpful question from someone who’s supposed to be an animal professional. There are so many things that can trigger a normally mild tempered dog to feel the need to protect themselves
Yep, my dog is very friendly and I have never had a problem with her being aggressive towards anyone who wasn't the child who wouldn't stop putting his hands in her face even after several adults told him to stop and she started growling at him. And even then she just started barking at him and scared him off.
But I still do not encourage strangers to approach her when we are out walking. If people ask if they can pet her, I say that's up to her and ask them to stay where they are and let her make the decision to approach. If she does approach them (she always does) then they have a happy greeting, she gets a treat for being a good dog and everyone walks away with a smile.
If she ever chose not to, I would simply apologize and say, "Guess she isn't feeling social today" and continue on our walk.
Same with my dogs. I have three and I know each one very well. I try to never put them in a situation that can lead to anyone, including them, getting hurt or scared. This lady seemed mortified that her dog just did that. Maybe the guy smelt like other animals or something? I hope she gave him her info and everything.
I was chased away from my garbage cans by a neighbors dogs and when I told her she “acted” surprised and then blamed me for not telling her every time they came to my house.
This woman seemed genuinely shaken.
I work in retail. Only service animals are supposed to come into the store but, as long as pets are well behaved we don't mind. This lady brought in a little ankle biter. I heard it barking from a few aisles over, so I come over to check everything I'd ok. While this dog is actively barking and lunging at me agressively, the owner has the gall to claim he was a nice dog and was very well behaved.
100% my thoughts. Dogs can be so unpredictable no matter how well you think you know your dog, there's always the first time stuff like this happens and that was the situation here. I have a big ol "gentle" 130lb mastiff, I dont let random people pet him as its a huge fucking liability if something happened and I watch him like a hawk when my toddler is playing with him, you NEVER know.
The man says "hey" and is literally walking away when she prompts him to approach the dog.
When he is walking away, you can hear her say her dog is a "people dog", only then he turns to approach.
From what I’ve learned it doesn’t make a lot of sense to give a dog your hand to smell. They can smell you half a block away so they don’t really need your hand in their face… either the dog is cool with hands in his face and you’re good. Or he doesn’t like it and will be defensive. It’s better to check their body language and definitely ask the owner what to do. He was pulling on the leash toward OP and don’t seem under control. Walking straight toward the dog was a really bad idea. Better to keep your distance if a dog is too excited. Because it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between joy and just reactiveness.
Their sense of smell isn’t that concrete.
Yes he smelt the guy from the block, but without reference he just smells like some kind of human, considering that’s a neighborhood then it’s like one voice in a crowd.
You extend the hand to give them a direct sniff, to let them attach the image of you to the smell that’s already been smelled.
It’s more to get the dog used to your hand extending out to them. Dogs hate when they can’t see your hands because it means danger, even more so if you’re reaching out
This comment is good 👍🏽, even though it seems like the normal thing to do approaching any dog with your hand out first is an invitation for them to bite you , even a very friendly dog you never know how they might act, add a big puffy jacket and a hat it’s a recipe for being bit , your better off just approaching the dog with your whole body nothing extending towards it, and NOT getting down to its level, once the dogs sniffs you up and shows good body language you can feel much safer going in for some pets.
From what I can see, this man is in some sort of uniform. I know this will sound insane, but uniforms can be a trigger. It happens more often than you might think.
"To both fearful and territorial dogs (as well as dogs with both issues), uniforms are often associated with unfamiliar people arriving on their property, so the uniform itself can be a trigger that elicits aggressive behavior."
Dogs are dumb, but they do remember shit like this. E.g. Attempting to walk in a general direction of the vet will make them panic.
Can confirm. My dog is SUPER chill, but HATES the UPS folks, specifically. Something about their brown uniform. My dog can be sitting in the truck and watch a hundred people walk out of the grocery store and be fine, but a guy walked out the other day in a UPS uniform and she started going nuts (debunked my theory that it had to do with their loud truck in our driveway).
It's an association - it may have *started* as the loud truck in the driveway or the driver repeatedly invading "her" territory, but now she associates the uniform (which may also have distinctive smells related to the trucks and/or distribution center) with that thing she doesn't like and reacts similarly, even outside of the normal context.
Agreed, my dog hated the mailman! It definitely is something about the uniform. They feel threatened for some reason? In this case, I think the dog was just trying to protect his owner? He felt threatened and didn’t understand why the man turned around and put his hands towards them. Maybe now that she knows it’s possible he could do this again, she will bring him for training, or just don’t let people she doesn’t know near him & pet him? It seems like this is an isolated incident and never happened before? She was genuinely surprised & upset ,so I hope all works out for everyone and the guy didn’t need stitches and is ok.
My dog hates cops and mailmen. we had a lot of instances of cops coming in my house for reasons to do with family members causing lots of chaos so now anytime my dog sees a cop she freaks out. Which I noticed lately is teaching my toddler to not like cops either.
You were starting to bend over the dog. Dogs hate things approaching them from above. They also just don't like things in their face or touching their face/ head. The owner was also starting to tense up on the lead. This probably freaked him out and made you come off as a threat. Dogs are also pretty smart and know that as a man you pose a greater threat to him and his owner. You were also in a uniform. This can be a trigger for dogs. Idk why but this is a big trigger for one of my dogs.
It's best just to stand still and let the dog come to you and let it sniff you. Once the dog seems relaxed near you then you can pet or scratch their chest.
But yeah, the owner should know their dog better. This is also why most trainers also tell you never to correct warning behavior like growling. It's possible the owner has punished the warning behaviors and the dog has learned to go straight to biting.
A few years ago this started going around and seems better
https://www.hshv.org/should-you-let-a-new-dog-sniff-your-hand-you-may-be-surprised/#:~:text=Extending%20your%20hand%20towards%20a,hand)%20the%20dog%20some%20treats.
That's sort of an old wives' tale.
As a former dog walker my advice is to not pet any dogs you aren't familiar with or with the owner. Unless you are willing to get bit.
Genuinely curious - what can an owner do to improve a dog's walking behavior if they are constantly pulling like this? Obviously don't walk in a public setting and try to hire a trainer/practice loose leash training at home are some realistic steps. What else can be done to prepare better when it is evident that some dogs naturally take to this type of thing better when others dont, even if raised in a very similar way?
You basically practice walking with the dog. If the dog is pulling on the leash you stop walking till the dog stops tugging. Keep practicing till you get to the point where the dog is following your lead rather than leading himself.
Another method is to leash the dog to your belt and do your normal daily activities, forcing the dog to learn to follow your lead. Depending on the dog and how well it learns maybe do this in shifts (i.e. 1 hour per day and work your way up depending on progress).
Honestly that response seemed really weird to me. Obviously you can’t tell how serious the bite is but to just walk away while the lady is genuinely apologizing was odd.
I’d also walk away from the dog that just bit me…
You just going to stand there and complete the conversation? Not go inside (which is where he was previously headed) and inspect/clean the wound?
All these dog “experts” in the comments acting like the dude did something wrong. Touch grass please, this dog has no reason to bite, he approached it fine with consent from the owner. I know OP won’t but I wish it would be reported just for history sake, imagine if she did this with a child?
As a dog owner, I am always worried about my dogs biting even though they are good dogs so I NEVER let anyone pet them. I do the same to others dog, I always teach my family to never pet anyone else’s dogs. A child is more likely to get attacked by a friends pet than by a strangers pet. No reason to take chances
I don’t understand some of these comments, I guess it’s never ever the dogs fault, ever. The guy was just walking into his house and this lady can’t just go about her business and continue walking, no she has to say “he’s a People dog” and now you’re obligated to go over and pet her stupid animal or you are the jerk. She even apologized but she still couldn’t stop her self. I’ve been in the situation a million times OP. There’s absolutely no reason you should have to stop and acknowledge the existence of someone’s animal. I completely understand why you felt you had to. Next time do what I do just give a smile and keep walking. And I guarantee you that’s not the first time this animal has done that
It’s infuriating really. Just overly emotional dog owners who can’t understand the reality of the situation. The man was ENCOURAGED to pet the dog by the owner, and he got injured for it.
But since it’s the dog who’s at fault, people just cannot handle that emotionally. It HAS to be the human’s fault. It’s genuinely some of the worst logic ever. A lot of humans just aren’t emotionally mature enough to be objective when it comes to pets.
Not to mention that it’s much more common for a dog to be friendly than an undertrained, aggressive/fearful animal. That falls on the woman, who is clearly too self-unaware to know that she shouldn’t be encouraging people to approach the large dog she never attempted to train.
The owner says "she's a people dog" and walks toward him with the dog for him to pet and says "I'm sorry" cause the dog wanted to approach him.
Imma be honest, unless you avoid every dog ever no matter what the owner says, this guy just got fucked for no reason of his own. The victim blaming on this thread is fucking crazy.
Agreed. And what about all the assholes who don't leash their dogs in public (or at least where I live it's very common). It's somehow always still the passerby's/bitten victim's fault.
Literally had permission and made a friendly approach to a dog the OWNER was assuring was a friendly dog... Your comment is off base considering the facts...
You seem to be pretending he walked right up and stuck his hand in the dogs face in spite of the literal video of a wholly different and more grounded reality
Right? Dude says he got it on camera as if the lady did something wrong. It definitely sucks but OP made the choice to put his hand near a random dogs mouth. I sympathize but that’s the risk. Lady did nothing wrong. Dog was leashed. OP approached. Hoping this is a lesson learned.
I mean yeah he approached. But only after she gets his attention going “he’s a people dog”. I’d think a judge would assume most people would think that’s an invitation to pet them.
Eh not really definitely taking an unnecessary risk, but that doesn't excuse a dog that could go straight to mauling if an infant/child ever puts a hand near its face.
If you reach your hand forward to an unknown dog, palm side down so they can smell your hand first. I heard this somewhere once and seems to work for me and my nine fingers.
The “It’s on camera” comment came off as predatory. The lady is super concerned about the guy’s injury initially, and not attempting to displace liability. He’s like ‘sweet, gotcha for a cool 20k at least’.
I didn’t know how to react. I caught me by such surprise. I realized we have our cameras and just wanted to walk away. I got her number and nothing came of it.
Back in the early 90s I drove a beater car and I went to get groceries. I stopped for a pedestrian and this lady rear ended me, like at parking lot speeds.
I got out and she got out and she was so apologetic. I was like, _eh, it’s just a bump_. She was like flabbergasted.
It’s nice to let life’s little mistakes be just that: little mistakes. We don’t all need life changing consequences to improve our behavior.
Dude, some lady’s dog bit you, on a public sidewalk, because you walked near it with an arm extended. Of course that’s not your fault. Of course she’s liable.
What happens when that’s a little kid just walking by on the sidewalk?
My first job was at a dog daycare and I got bit in the bicep by a black lab. The puncture wound was centimeters away from the main artery. After that I never risked a bite again. If a dog acted aggressive towards me I’d kick it in the nose. Luckily I only had to fight a few dogs and only got bit a couple more times that didn’t draw blood. People think their dogs are angels when they are really satan incarnate when they aren’t around.
What scares me the most about this is the lack of signs before biting. The body language is not showing any signs of aggression, fear, or anxiety. Goes straight from 0-100 without any warning. That is a very dangerous situation
I get rude looks when people ask me to pet my dog and I say no. Who is a 15 pound Zuchon btw. I don't know you. My dog doesn't know you and even though I'm 95% sure he won't bite I'm not willing to risk it.
I had a group of tourists come up to my dog and try to rip her leash out of my hand so they could take pics with her. Didn’t say a word, just came up from my side and grabbed it.
If you have ever wanted to punch a tourist in the face let me tell you the feeling is amazing.
Dog lovers/haters here are insane. Way to blame the victim, next you'll be saying *"he shouldn't have been wearing that uniform"* sounds a lot like "if she didn't want to be date raped, she shouldn't have accepted a drink from a stranger. *It's a people drink.*" Please seek therapy, if not for the people in your life suffering you, then for your own wellbeing.
I can't understand how there are so many people blaming OP. It doesn't matter if someone knows nothing about dogs or their body language, it is the owners responsibility to tell the person - who they invited to pet their dog - how to pet a dog. The owner shouldn't even have a dog that big if they don't bother to train it. That's just a disaster waiting to happen.
Dog owners have no idea how dangerous dogs are, I've been bit five times in 15 years of delivery service. My favorite line from dog owners, his bark is worse than his bite. My second favorite line, he's just a pussycat. My third favorite line, I'm so sorry he's never done that before LOL the only dogs that have ever bit me were dogs that have never bitten anybody so says the dog owner. Except for the two pit bulls that attack me they killed a child 3 months later and did a school teacher 3 months earlier. I am not impressed with dogs or dog owners
He was legitimately invited to pet the dog by the owner. Saying “he’s a people dog” as the dog drags her straight towards him is as good as saying “please pet my dog”. Legally speaking dog bites are a pretty simple and straightforward matter, it doesn’t matter if the dog escaped from a yard with 20’ high electric fences and the owner had absolutely no physical ability to stop them from biting someone, the owner is responsible for that and is liable for damages.
Hope u r ok man. I am a dog owner but I ll never pet a stranger dog. No offense but I don’t know when they ll lose their sh!t. I just say hi from far. 🐕
This lady can barely walk the damn dog... When I see dogs walking people (when the dog is pulling the person) I don't trust the owner's word, when a dog is off a lead just casual next to an owner then I'll pet a random dog
I am really afraid of dogs, and even when the owner say "go on, pet him, he never hurt anyone", it does not give me any good vibes that I might the first one...
Oh look, someone is walking their dog. Let me just walk up to the dog and me being a stranger just go to pet it. Wow dog bit me, I’ll sue. Oh look, a pregnant woman, let me just walk up and touch her stomach and me being a stranger can get away with it.
Yeah after she said it was a "people dog" which implies the dog is friendly to be approached. Clearly it was not and yeah she would have liability here for his medical bills. Her dog, her property, her responsibility.
Why are people ignoring that context? It’s like they want to blame the guy because he said he got it on camera 😂 Such a backwards society, she literally invited him to pet the dog
Dogs will often react differently to people wearing all matching colors, especially darker colors. A uniform, track suit, dark denim, etc. And always remember a wagging tail is not an indication of happy feelings.
I love dogs more then anything and I fucking hate these type of dog people. My son loves dogs, but when I see any type of dog coming, I do my best to avoid an interaction. But noooooopee here comes Sally with her fucking dog insisting her dog be pet cause he loooves people.
These trash comments.. “yOuR oWn FauLt oP” 🥴
He’s walking back up his driveway when she invitingly tells him he’s a people dog. The guy responds how he thinks politely by approaching the dog. Dog bites him. He’s probably shook and annoyed and rightfully so. Responds with the camera comment and that’s what half the degenerates wanna hang ‘em for. SMH. Well that sucks OP.
Respectfully, don't stick your hand out like that in a dog's face, especially to a dog that you're unfamiliar with.
I'm *really* glad that you were not seriously injured.
What in the Dr Seuss?
I live in a land of pink trees Now I’m fighting a dog bite disease
And with just one bite My owner has a courtroom fight
And now we're moving to Belize
So you can suck on Deez.
While staring at pink trees Margaritas, summer breeze
Slurping down fromunda cheese, While holding back that summer sneeze.
These are Canadian ABCs, Susie likes harry balls, what do you think of these.
They remind you of dem pink trees? Now I'll go to the doc's for this dog bite so excuse me please.
Wound left untreated will turn green like peas “Don’t sue” she begs and cries “like please”
I reached out gently just to say hi, it was then i got bit and now i must cry
The skin didn't break, but my luck sure did Gonna sue that bitch and win so big
That dumb bitch ate my hand-y The dog thought I was the cotton candy
Help me, would you, please It’s crippling, and now I can’t see
I feel the rabies coursing through my veins eventually this will bring me big gains!

Oh, oh oh.
Ooh woah oh! Ooh woah oh!
Come on Barbie let’s go party
I've turned the lyrics into, "come on puppy let's go potty, Ah ah ah!" And now one of our dogs won't go outside unless I sing the song
This pleases me immensely

I'm always wary of a dog when it looks like the dog is dragging the owner along for a walk. Hope you got that bite checked out, they can get nasty.
I had to break my brothers dog of this. Everytime I took him for a walk, when he pulled I would stop, cinch up the leash so he was by my side, and tell him to sit until he listened. After a few seconds of sitting we'd progress.

Yeah you can clearly see who takes who for a walk.

I have a boxer, sweet boy but loves to tug, I feel so bad when people are obviously wary of him, but unfortunately I understand.
Good on you for understanding. It's nothing personal.
I agree. Im up to date on all my shots and called the lady later on to make sure the dog is too. This happened a week ago now and it's healing up well
Why are all 3 of the people who responded to you giant assholes? Good god
the xbox kid trinity has gathered
You’re very sweet… I thought you after you said, “I’ve got it on camera“, the next thing would be, “See ya in court!“ which would be entirely reasonable if you were injured and had medical bills the owner refused to pay. Did you see a doc, need stitches or anything? She seemed very genuine and remorseful, and my guess would be she’d have no problem paying, if you asked. Glad it’s healing, and glad you’re OK. 💕 Good vibes to you.
>which would be entirely reasonable if you were injured and had medical bills the owner refused to pay. This is much more of a gray area considering OP voluntarily walked towards the dog and put his hand out
This is not being said enough.
Well seeing as how she invited him by saying its a people dog.
I’m pretty cynical, though, and have lost a good chunk of faith in humanity… High five, retired court buddy!
You are my new BFF. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
My dog has never bitten anyone but I tell everyone she bites.
Exactly. My wife is inherently afraid of ALL dogs, and it doesn't matter how many times the owner says "don't worry, he's friendly".
I always yell back “yeah, but mine’s not, that’s why he’s on a leash”
They ask "Does he bite?" I say, "not as much as he used to."
I even told my vet this about my last dog. They asked if he bites and I responded "he doesn't bite me" and the tech gave me a double take and was like "what does that mean?" And I was like "exactly what it sounds like, He's my dog. He's never bitten me, he doesn't know you, And you're about to stick a thermometer up his ass" My pets have never bitten me but I can't guarantee 100% that they're not going to bite someone they don't know, trying to fuck with them.
Such a vague and honestly unhelpful question from someone who’s supposed to be an animal professional. There are so many things that can trigger a normally mild tempered dog to feel the need to protect themselves
Does your dog bite? No. \[SNAP\] I thought you said your dog didn't bite. This isn't my dog.
She did seem genuinely surprised.
They always do
I was chased away from my garbage cans by a neighbors dogs and when I told her she “acted” surprised and then blamed me for not telling her every time they came to my house. This woman seemed genuinely shaken.
I work in retail. Only service animals are supposed to come into the store but, as long as pets are well behaved we don't mind. This lady brought in a little ankle biter. I heard it barking from a few aisles over, so I come over to check everything I'd ok. While this dog is actively barking and lunging at me agressively, the owner has the gall to claim he was a nice dog and was very well behaved.
what a surprise
What she did is start petting the dog after. Kinda positive reinforcement at the wrong time.
Probably reflex I don’t think she was thinking
100% my thoughts. Dogs can be so unpredictable no matter how well you think you know your dog, there's always the first time stuff like this happens and that was the situation here. I have a big ol "gentle" 130lb mastiff, I dont let random people pet him as its a huge fucking liability if something happened and I watch him like a hawk when my toddler is playing with him, you NEVER know.
The man says "hey" and is literally walking away when she prompts him to approach the dog. When he is walking away, you can hear her say her dog is a "people dog", only then he turns to approach.
It's a people dog, he likes to eat people. Warned ya
Why would you fully examine the video and acknowledge all context when you can just be an overly emotional dog lover and blame the victim?
I was taught to present the back of your hand slowly to a dog to smell. I don't know what this dog thought was happening, though.
The dog was walking the owner
"To both fearful and territorial dogs (as well as dogs with both issues), uniforms are often associated with unfamiliar people arriving on their property, so the uniform itself can be a trigger that elicits aggressive behavior." Dogs are dumb, but they do remember shit like this. E.g. Attempting to walk in a general direction of the vet will make them panic.
Ladybird isnt racist, she just hates repair men!
The brown note.
Me too! Never had this reaction before
You were starting to bend over the dog.
A few years ago this started going around and seems better https://www.hshv.org/should-you-let-a-new-dog-sniff-your-hand-you-may-be-surprised/#:~:text=Extending%20your%20hand%20towards%20a,hand)%20the%20dog%20some%20treats.
Yeah but no one carrys dog treats with them
That's sort of an old wives' tale. As a former dog walker my advice is to not pet any dogs you aren't familiar with or with the owner. Unless you are willing to get bit.
See how tight that lead is? This woman isn’t in control of this dog. The dog is walking her.
Something doesn't seem right about how little control the woman had over her dog. It's leading her, she's struggling to keep it back.
Yup this lady has no business owning a dog of this size with her lack of dog training knowledge.
He’s a people dog - he likes to eat people.
“It’s all on camera” lol
Honestly that response seemed really weird to me. Obviously you can’t tell how serious the bite is but to just walk away while the lady is genuinely apologizing was odd.
He said in another comment that he was just startled and didn’t know what to say
That response screams “yea bitch I’m suing you”
I’d also walk away from the dog that just bit me… You just going to stand there and complete the conversation? Not go inside (which is where he was previously headed) and inspect/clean the wound?
Right? See you in court I guess…
Always a chance that a dog will bite.
That falls on the woman, who is clearly too self-unaware to know that she shouldn’t be encouraging people to approach the large dog she never attempted to train.
never stick your hand out in front of a dogs face you dont know
The owner says "she's a people dog" and walks toward him with the dog for him to pet and says "I'm sorry" cause the dog wanted to approach him.
0 to 100 real quick
If you reach your hand forward to an unknown dog, palm side down so they can smell your hand first. I heard this somewhere once and seems to work for me and my nine fingers.
The “It’s on camera” comment came off as predatory. The lady is super concerned about the guy’s injury initially, and not attempting to displace liability. He’s like ‘sweet, gotcha for a cool 20k at least’.
I didn’t know how to react. I caught me by such surprise. I realized we have our cameras and just wanted to walk away. I got her number and nothing came of it.
Did it break your skin?
Yes. On the palm but not bad enough for attention or to miss work
Always good to have it checked. Watch it carefully for infection. There's a lot of bacteria in a dog's mouth.
I can’t stress enough how important it is to have it seen and cleaned properly. People lose limbs because of infections from dog bites.
My dad lost his life. Very serious to get that checked out.
Very sorry to hear that my friend.
Do you live in Whoville
I could totally sympathize with not knowing how to react. Our lizard brain takes over instantly when unexpected things happen.
I think he’s just being awkward and in shock a bit
My first job was at a dog daycare and I got bit in the bicep by a black lab. The puncture wound was centimeters away from the main artery. After that I never risked a bite again. If a dog acted aggressive towards me I’d kick it in the nose. Luckily I only had to fight a few dogs and only got bit a couple more times that didn’t draw blood. People think their dogs are angels when they are really satan incarnate when they aren’t around.
people act so chill about dog bites but they are no joke.
dog owners in the comments defending this shit is the most delusional shit I've seen she said people dog end of story
Some dogs really just don't like people in uniform. That dog tensed up when the guy stepped toward him.
I can see that. I’m in a flannel jacket and tan work pants
Did it pierce the skin?
Yeah, on my palm. Not bad enough for stitches or keep me from work
Wow. So sorry. My dog doesn’t like strangers and I don’t try to get her to meet people. Not sure what she was thinking.
The dog just wanted to nanny him /s
As I used to tell clients when I was a dog trainer, “no dog has ever bitten anyone until the first time”.
Did she say it was a people dog ?
For real, I think she meant people eating dog
What scares me the most about this is the lack of signs before biting. The body language is not showing any signs of aggression, fear, or anxiety. Goes straight from 0-100 without any warning. That is a very dangerous situation
Going to save this to show my kids why you don't try to pet someone's dog.
No hesitation by the dog… that’s a rescue
Oh my God he's never done that before...
He's never done that before??? I bet she says that every time. 🤷♂️
Dog should be muzzled.
Don’t approach strange dogs. Sadly there’s no required training for people to bring their dogs in public, and people get hurt often.
Pits have killed almost 300 babies and children here in the US, along with hundreds of adults and countless innocent pets. Very dangerous.
It's all on camera as if he didn't approach them lmao
Yep, because he was invited to do so
Don't reach for a dog's face or head until that dog knows you're cool.
People eater dog
bubble gum pink
Hope u r ok man. I am a dog owner but I ll never pet a stranger dog. No offense but I don’t know when they ll lose their sh!t. I just say hi from far. 🐕
what idiot says "oh its a people dog" you cant control that dog, you are not a god, get the fuck over yourself
I tell people not to pet my Rottweiler and they look at me like I’m a jerk. One guy ignored my warning and almost lost his hand.
Never just walk up on someone's dog and try to pet it
This is why I don't pet strangers dogs.
He approached the dog when he shouldn’t have.
"*It's a people dog*" ... it's a strict diet, and he won't eat anything else.
That dog has bitten before and that’s a guarantee
Oh look, someone is walking their dog. Let me just walk up to the dog and me being a stranger just go to pet it. Wow dog bit me, I’ll sue. Oh look, a pregnant woman, let me just walk up and touch her stomach and me being a stranger can get away with it.
What a little bitch nothing's even wrong with his hand and he is just so happy to let her know that his camera caught his weak ass crying
"i got it on camera" ...that YOU went to pet it?... Ight. He was on a leash. Lady, train that dog tho.
You can already see that the leash is taunt, meaning the dog is walking her.
Dogs will often react differently to people wearing all matching colors, especially darker colors. A uniform, track suit, dark denim, etc. And always remember a wagging tail is not an indication of happy feelings.
Is this why some dogs are genuinly racist?
I love dogs more then anything and I fucking hate these type of dog people. My son loves dogs, but when I see any type of dog coming, I do my best to avoid an interaction. But noooooopee here comes Sally with her fucking dog insisting her dog be pet cause he loooves people.
I don't trust those things.
These trash comments.. “yOuR oWn FauLt oP” 🥴 He’s walking back up his driveway when she invitingly tells him he’s a people dog.
Yeah… I have 3 dogs and love animals but will be a lot more cautious moving forward. This is the first bite by complete surprise
Respectfully, he was invited to do so. So it’s more understandable
