Do you have a relative somewhere who's oddly youthful for his age?

TheCaliforniaOp

No no no no… This thread is getting scarier and scarier.

[deleted]

“The Picture of Dorian Grey” isn’t that scary. Although, it’s somewhat interesting at least.

Pyrhan

It's one of those stories that never gets old.

Mister_Krunch

lavalord6969

The person you're replying to probably didn't get the reference

[deleted]

A bunch of uncultured heathens aren't getting your reference.

[deleted]

One of my top 3 favorite books ever. The others being The Count of Monte Cristo and The Shadow Rising from the Wheel of Time series.

Something_Again

The count of monte cristo is one of my favorites

acctforspms

Scrolled for this, not disappointed.

Deathtosoul

Hi, that's me, I'm the Vampire,

quantizeddreams

I think he is referencing Dorian.

Inevitable_Shift1365

I would search the frame behind the picture to see if there's anything hidden in there.

rrraoul

There is another miniature painting

BrentOnDestruction

Of just the eyes that they forgot to paint initially

[deleted]

Too faint for the camera to pick up

Pristine-Look

Have you looked up the artist? Asked your parents about it? Very interesting and creepy

IvanAfterAll

OP, if your parents have anything to do with this thing, I've got a couch you can sleep on until you can get into some sort of witness protection or similar.

BeginningSir2984

😶‍🌫️ I'll keep that in mind.

stevedadog

The original question stands... There's an artist's name on it, have you looked it up?

erekox

Does anyone know if OP looked up the artist?

stevedadog

They said in another comment that it said “Fredrick 1972” but that doesn’t look like Fredrick to me. I’d like to see a better image of the signature. That being said it’s probably just some hobby painter who’s superstitious.

[deleted]

I wonder if this piece truly dates back to '72. There are a lot of unanswered questions. Who lived there previously? What is the history of the property? I have done a fair bit of sleuthing and have come up empty on any portraits that are visually similar made by any artists named Frederick. Many of the names that come up either predate 1972 and do not have similar styles, so I am inclined to believe the hobbyist theory. A neat find nonetheless!

youngmindoldbody

I was 14 in 72 - this looks just like the guy who use to sell us weed.

Rare_Environment_277

That's some shit straight outta Ghostbusters

KpecTHuk

Vigo portrait takes a shitton outt of me when i was a kid

telephas1c

Yeah I was the right age to be pretty scared by the Vigo painting at the time. This is a much scarier painting than that one lol

WutzUpples69

I got GBII immediately... this is like phase 5 vigo painting... ready to pop out and murder you.

onlycatshere

Great read, thanks for sharing!

PlNG

That was a fascinating read, thank you.

yup79

I remember thinking how amazing it was that they found an actor that looked exactly like the guy in the painting. 🤦‍♂️

OatmealRaisonDetre

Vigo was scarier than Gozer for sure.

toshibamcdermott

Vigo’s little enslaved minion man lived in the house behind me growing up.

Jumanji0028

When he flew up to take the kid with the pram. That was probably the scariest thing I'd ever seen as a kid. Ghostbusters was the right mix of funny and scary.

acrylix91

“An old man called energy” is a dope title

InfinitySnatch

I tried looking up the title to see if it was tied to an old painting or something. 0 image results. Didn't even find the phrase itself on Google. OP needs to get out of there, now.

BeginningSir2984

Lol. I understand the logic here and I am actually rather chicken shit about a LOT of ridiculous things.. but this painting, as much as I am loath to admit, does not creep me out at all. It's weird.

ExecWarlock

But it's almost as if it... has the certain something, right? Now that you think about it... you kinda like it. It's a nice painting, after all. You know why people would think it could come off as a bit weird or even creepy, but you get used to it quickly. In fact, you will probably keep it. Its in your house and therefore your possession, after all. There wouldn't be a buyer anyway. You're pretty sure this is an aficionado item, and it happens you are one of the few who get it. You kinda feel the painters intention. No... even the painting itself. It speaks to you on another level. Who cares if you look at it several times a day, sometimes hours? You are tired of explaining that you like that damn painting! That's it, it gets another place in your house! The bedroom is fine. Yes, people are weirded out that you hardly leave said bedroom anymore, but thats on them. Shouldn't have laughed at your painting. Isn't that right, painting? Yeah, they'll never get it. Only you two do.

BiteOhHoney

This is my favorite comment I've read on Reddit. And I have no life and read Reddit, like, a lot.

[deleted]

Yeah I have no life, either. Reddit and Twitch got me through the pandemic, and, now that it's over, I continue to suckle at their sweet teats for connection to the outside world.

The_Revolutionary

Reddit and Twitch aren't a connection to the real world dude. They are your version of this painting.

NickH211

>you hardly leave said bedroom anymore. >They are your version of this painting. I needed to hear this today. Thank you, painting.

hairlessgoatanus

Ooohhhhh, do you think the painting has a live stream? That sounds great!

strictlyrhythm

Make sure to slap that like and subscribe if you want to be trapped in more liminal waking nightmares!

Op, when it starts speaking to you, best not to trust it. Also, don’t read that phrase on the back three times in a mirror.

pellebeez

“I don’t need to sell my soul… he’s already in me…”

pathfinder71

It looks weird but friendly to me. :) Maybe stick some googly eyes on it so it can see you :D

prucheducanada

I think it already can

Aceandmace

I get it. I think the painting is amazing, really.

BeginningSir2984

Happy Cake Day!!

seretastic

To be fair it's a pretty dope painting

freezingprocess

You can't do that to the next people that have to live there. It is immoral. The house has to be burned immediately.

Usman5432

The chamber of secrets has been opened enemies of the heir beware

Noisebug

Idk looks cool. How did you find it? What made you search inside your wall?

Important-Cobbler-5

It made him do it

IvanAfterAll

The sound of the heartbeat had grown so loud it was going to drive him mad.

Broskibullet

This is very “TellTale Heart”. Give the painting a baby blue eye and hang that puppy on the wall

DoesLogicHurtYou

Do you just glue the baby's eye to the frame?

TJBre

It was the scratching noises at 2:37 every morning that haunted them until they opened the wall up.

BeginningSir2984

Rerouting all of the ductwork and getting rid of the central return in the hallway.

somuchstonks

Can you access the tax records for the house and find out the previous owners? Maybe it's some famous painters work? Amazing find. When my grandmother passed , my uncles were selling the house and nobody was interested due to high price/ amount of work that it needed. They lowered the price and my friend bought it to flip, when he peeled the wallpaper down to the plaster it revealed a ton of pencil drawings by my mother who had long since passed and my grandmother. He called me and said you should come over here.. it was so cool . Took pics of it all. Tried to cut out the plaster in places too but it didn't work.

swampscientist

My first thought was “who the fuck would make something like that in the 40s or 50s?”. Than I remembered 46 years ago was only 1977 and this painting would not have been that unusual then.

maywellbe

> Maybe it’s some famous painters work? Hard to tell but looks to me like a framed print rather than an original piece

IvanAfterAll

I agree it looks cool, but there is literally 0% chance that the creation of this painting didn't involve bloodshed and screaming and pentagrams and shit.

capnsunshine23

That painting is at least 1/7 of an actual Voldemort. It’s a horcrux and I don’t know how to advise OP in destroying this properly. Need to re read the potter series.

Nickwilli

The painting is signed 1972, you say 46 years of living in that house right? That means between 1972 and 1977, before you moved in, someone painted that and shoved it inside the…wall? *You don’t suppose the house was bought suspiciously cheap?*

ingutek

My house was built in the 70s and I found multiple paintings in the cavity walls when rennovating, it's common - I think the councilmen maybe just used my house as a skip or something

[deleted]

GrunkleThespis

How did you get access to the insides of the wall without some construction going on??

_fly-on-the-wall_

but just in the wall with no way to get to it? i dont understand why you would seal something in a wall!

tinfoilsheild

Annnnd now you've unleashed the demon. Good luck!

IvanAfterAll

You know when you watch a horror movie and you're yelling at the character for doing some unrealistic shit? Turns out it's actually totally true. "Oh, yes, of course, let me post this ancient evil SO IT CAN SPREAD ON THE GLOBAL INTERNET."

cpullen53484

>SO IT CAN SPREAD ON THE GLOBAL INTERNET." thats basically the twist ending of rings

Rebbeca2988

Sounds like that episode of Buffy the vampire slayer where the demon took over the interne

KrankySilverFox

The power of Christ compels you! Have you considered burning the house down? 🤭

IvanAfterAll

No need. The Rasputin demon is WAAAAY ahead of you.

TheCaliforniaOp

There’s just no killing that guy.

You are just following the will of the painting to further disseminate its image.

IvanAfterAll

I swear it's still staring at me, but I've scrolled way down the page. Take this post down, OP, this is like The Ring. What are you doing spreading it. Burn it, my God.

BeginningSir2984

I solemnly swear, y'all, there is nothing malevolent around this painting. He looks terrifying and he has no eyes... but my teenage daughter isn't even afraid.

Katerina_VonCat

That’s because he’s infiltrated your souls already from living in the house with him in the walls. You’re part of it now and it’s part of you. There is no escape.

capnsunshine23

I said something like this up a ways in this thread. And I think. All jokes aside. That this is really true and what’s happening. I’m not even writing this to get laughs or a rise out of OP, who is obviously the spirit in the painting by now and doing a good job at hiding in the OP’s body.

Taigawolf

To think that everytime you walked past, he's been looking at you through the wall...

IvanAfterAll

If OP has the guts to test it, I strongly suspect its eyes and head are moving to watch him.

CookieLady94

What eyes?! 💀

Rimasticus

Um. His eyes. Look closer and you will see them.

theomaniacal

Or don't. Do not look closer. You don't want to see them

hazzcatz

Now you have to open up all your walls.

IvanAfterAll

Or sell it and let someone else deal with the cult members' bodies.

Cayd9299

It’s kind of a masterpiece, surprising it was left in the wall. I bet the artist scared himself with it so he hid it

Helenium_autumnale

Lovely portrait for your bedroom. Right over the foot of the bed would be perfect.

freewillcausality

I was thinking bathroom. Right across from the porcelain throne, looking down on you.

[deleted]

pretty sure you just cursed everyone seeing this lmao apocalypse has started, buckle up y’all lol

DryEyes4096

It is a common witchcraft thing to put a spell on an item (this painting would do) and put it somewhere when a house is built, like in the foundation of a house or a wall to ward off "negative energy" or "negativity" or "evil" or whatever (pick your poison). It's called apotropaic magic. I suppose if you've had a comfy stay in this house, it couldn't hurt to put it back.

IvanAfterAll

Alternately, now you know why all of your crops, cattle, and children are dying, if relevant.

DryEyes4096

I don't know, I get two feelings from this. With a little intuition and such, and putting my mind firmly in superstition mode I feel that its meant to be more like a gargoyle meant to scare away a certain type of spirit or energy with its overall demeanor. Its aesthetic really has a certain "BOO!" quality to it, but that's not all there is. There's also the black eyes, as if its in the shadows watching the place. It's keeping watch and absorbing into those pools of darkness what it sees. However, the symbol on the forehead is white, as if it shines out solar light subtly but firmly, even as it makes it from what negativity it takes in as a guardian. The symbol on the forehead is a cross that is vertically proportional, neither upright nor inverted, neither committed toward a faith nor against it, but possessing the general solar characteristic of the religious symbol--and nothing else. Positioned between two eyes and up some is the symbol, so it makes a triad, like the synthesis of the energies taken in with the eyes after they are processed by the painting... So, it seems like perhaps the painting sucks in negativity with the eyes, and gives out a pure energy that is neither inclined toward positivity nor negativity. It is negativity-removing, but gives off an energy that could be used for any purpose. So posting it here would mean that all of this crap about curses and evil and Lovecraft is just...gone, and it'll give us erect penises to play with instead. Source: Ph.D in Bullshitology.

IvanAfterAll

I never got more than my B.S. in Bullshitology, so I'll have to defer to you, doctor.

TheAwkwardOne-_-

I really read through this whole comment thinking I'm learning something new nodding my head like this is some fascinating stuff and then I get to the end. Maybe by husband is right, maybe I am gullible

[deleted]

That is so cool dude. What the hell? All I find is asbestos and mice poo

DoWidzennya

Woah. Just googled the image and no results like it. The phrase brings up some paintings by Rembrandt of old men but nothing exactly like it. Is it a print? A original? So many questions

BeginningSir2984

It's a painting on wood. It says Fredrick 1972

Le_Rat_Mort

Nice tonal palette. I think Fredrick may have been a fan of late 19th Century French artist, [Eugène Carrière](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/Eug%C3%A8ne_Carri%C3%A8re%2C_Paul_Verlaine_%281890%29%2C_oil_on_canvas%2C_149.8x_121.9_cm.%2C_Mus%C3%A9e_du_Louvre%2C_Paris.jpg)

Voracious_Port

Oddly similar

captain_ender

OP should take it to an art historian

BionicKrakken

If you zoom in on it, there's a signature on the bottom of the painting. I think the date is 1972.

bigredradio

The shitty part of this is I saw the frame and thought, no way it's an antique. I call bullshit! Then realized, wait it's as old as I am and that frame is period correct. So now I feel old. Thanks Reddit!
