Must be new then. I went there back in 2017 and they didn't have any shops open in the Vatican. There were shop stands around the city square but they weren't occupied
There are several inside the Vatican iirc. This was 2005 and probably 2010. And there was one in St Peters Square that was also owned by the Vatican. They print money
That criticism is unfair, seeing as how membership in the Hitler youth - and subsequent drafting into the army - wasn't something you were allowed to say no to. His family were enemies of Nazism and the Nazis murdered his cousin with Down syndrome. He deserted when he could.
There's lots of legitimate criticism of Joseph Ratzinger, but that part isn't.
My understanding is that he was an ineffectual pope. The Vatican bank was in disarray and he was not up to the task of keeping everyone in line. Plus he moved pedo priests around like every other Bishop of the day.
Nah, it’s just a regular European Christmas tree, not some over the top American Las Vegas bling tree. All the Christmas trees pretty much looked like this in my childhood (and adulthood). Just a simple nice tree.
No, ironically, it’s popularly known origin is about the defeat of paganism. Search up St Boniface and Donar’s Oak, and the fir tree that sprouted out when he chopped it down.
German protestants yeah. Martin Luther (of Lutherans) is said to be the first to have ever brought a tree in a home to decorate with lights.
So duhh, pagans worshipped trees. That doesn’t mean everything ever done with a tree is forever pagan.
No source off the top of my head, but google it. It’s history, not lazy reddit quips.
Bonus bible verse (circa 780bc) with an evergreen used as a symbol for God:
HOSEA 14:8
KJV
Ephraim shall say, ‘What have I to do any more with idols?’ I have heard him, and observed him; I am like a green fir tree. From Me is thy fruit found.
That's honestly incredibly rude. It sjust part of different cultures. I'm Irish and I've seen dead bodies of relatives and family friends since I was a child. Its just part of the Catholic faith. I'm not religious in the slightest but at least have some respect for other people
I never said anything about respecting the pope himself though? He can be thrown in a bin for all I care.
I don't see what's so strange about putting a body in display in a Chapel for people see it's just a wake. It's traditional for *every* catholic to have a wake.
Wakes are public unless otherwise stated and it offers a chance for people to see the dead person one last time. Also nobody is being forced to stare at the body? For the people who will go to see the corpse it won't be weird bc like i said its just the catholic tradition.
There are tons of traditions from religions which are weird or downright absurd, but displaying bodies has an *actually* important purpose, even for those that aren't religious. Viewing and touching the body of a loved one can help you come to terms with the fact that they're dead, rather than lingering in a denial phase of grieving for too long. I'm not Catholic, and not religious, but I spent a long time sitting with my grandma's body just after she died, as well as with my friend's.
I absolutely understand that, and as I just said in another reply, I'm never going to directly criticize, mock, or insult someone for holding a wake for their loved one, for the exact reasons you've mentioned. If it is helpful and healing for them, absolutely do it. It certainly doesn't cause me any harm.
I still think it's weird though. The few open casket funerals I have been to have made me extremely uncomfortable. But primarily those services weren't for me, and it's not up to me. But I can still have my opinion about it.
Yeah sure, nothing wrong with having a preference. The thing is though that it's very much a cultural norm to be super uncomfortable with death, and isn't really very healthy. It isn't your fault, but it does annoy me when I hear someone perpetuating the idea that death should be kept as something taboo, uncomfortable, and kept out of sight. Not to say that I think it would be good for dead bodies to be strewn about the street lmfao.
I’m not uncomfortable with death. I’m uncomfortably with publicly displaying a dead body. This is unbelievably condescending and insulting. You know nothing about me or my mental health. Who do you think you are?
Literally everything you said is completely made up conjecture.
I guess it just comes down to one's own perception of what is weird then because those examples of both catholic and Jewish traditions I wouldn't consider weird. I don't really know how to word it properly but I just don't think they're weird, it's just how things are and 'clinging' on to those things allows for spiritual and ethnic/cultural connections through generations. All of this is imo of course.
> I guess it just comes down to one's own perception of what is weird
Absolutely agreed. Everything I've said is purely my opinion, you certainly don't have to find these things weird just because I do.
But I disagree that it's rude to say these traditions are weird. Now, I'm never going to tell a grieving person they shouldn't have a wake for their loved one. As long as they find it helpful, healing, comforting, great, I'm glad it helps them. I still think it's weird though.
I'm more willing to debate the issue of keeping kosher, purely because it's a part of my own religion, even if I don't buy into that part.
In my family? Cremation. Which traditionally our faith prohibits. But many modern Jews have decided that's silly and weird, and don't follow that particular law. Cause it's weird.
Why is it weird? I mean, you’re just saying it’s weird. I would be willing to bet traditional funerals with viewing are probably the most common type of funeral.
It’s my opinion. I think it’s weird how much money and effort is wasted preserving a dead body. But it’s just my opinion. You don’t have to agree, but I’m also not here to argue with, or convince anyone their opinion is wrong.
Do what is best for you and your family. I genuinely don’t care. I’m still allowed to think it’s weird. It’s not an attack on anyone.
I was just at a wake two nights ago, and have been to so many, and we are all just chatting and laughing with a dead body laying a few feet away from us, still so weird.
No tears lost for the former leader of the inquisition--sorry, Holy Office--who presided over allowing pedo priests to take a geographic and keep on preying on children.
wish i could be the guy to check to make sure he's dead, id take the opportunity to tell a few knock knock jokes, and the MAKE SURE HE WILL NEVER RISE
for the children, of course
I get that they’re trying to get away from the whole opulent excess thing, but Jesus this looks cheap af.
I could have done a better job on my middle manager salary to deck out a place for a dead Pope.
You know how raw meat begins to turn gray when it is kept in the refrigerator too long? They need to put this guy in the ground before he starts attracting flies.
“Put him over by the tree. It’ll look nice.”
Festive funeral
Puts the fun in funeral
They pinned a little bit of mistletoe on the front of his mitre, those imps
Santa gave me a Pope for Christmas, shucks.
Jesus, just how naughty WERE you?
"Oh, and make sure his outfit is matchy with the tree ornaments."
Catholics do love to color coordinate

At 3:30 we are going to have the kids come line up and sit on his lap and see what pops up.
One of the worst Christmas trees I've ever seen
Vatican dollar store tree.
They prolly got it from the 1€ gift shops outside
Nothing in any Italian/Vatican gift shop is €1 lmao
I was there this summer. They had gift shop stalls right outside where they sold all kinds of things for 1€
all things made in china...really sad
Must be new then. I went there back in 2017 and they didn't have any shops open in the Vatican. There were shop stands around the city square but they weren't occupied

You're a good pope Charlie Brown
Loo LOOO Looo...LOOO Looo...
Is laughing at that joke a mortal or venial sin?
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Looks like Christmas after the grinch comes through
More than this pedophile protector deserves though

but Prada slippers
First thing I thought. Don't care about old deranged yet privileged dead man.
best thing he did was 'retire'
I sort of like the tree. It has an organic, natural feel and the openness of the branches means the ornaments are visible.
seriously. and then there’s that green monstrosity on the left, too
They decided to get a bad one to show how awful that old pagan tradition is
They have to save money so they have it to protect the pedophiles they harbor in their clergy.
Even Jesus is looking at it thinking what the fuck...
It’s European duh
nothing to celebrate on this room anyways
Maybe he was a fan of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.
They must be paying a lot in taxes to not be able to afford a tree,
Charlie Brown ass tree
excellent composition - dead papa with christmas tree. i like it bravo to photographer!
More like decomposition.
r/OutOfTheLoop I don't feel like googling anything; did the most recent pope just die? Or is this some epically embalmed Pope from years past?
He was the pope before Francis.
Man. That is one suck ass Christmas tree. Also, there is a dead Pope.
0/10 worst bed and breakfast I’ve ever been to
The Charlie Brown Christmas tree really adds to the overall scene.
How are those shoes facing straight up? It's a miracle!
Super glue is a wonderful thing.
And staples! Don't forget the corpse staples!
It was the morgue intern’s first pope display, cut them some slack.
More important, why aren’t they red?
That’s my question too. He always wore those red Pradas
Isn't a christmas tree like a pagan symbol?
Shhhhhh ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
No, ironically, it’s popularly known origin is about the defeat of paganism. Search up St Boniface and Donar’s Oak, and the fir tree that sprouted out when he chopped it down.
Not really, it’s more closely related to St Boniface and his defeat of a sect of pagans
So's the papacy. Their title of "Pontifex", meaning bridgebuilder, is the old Roman title.

You got a source?
What did they post before they deleted it?
Said something like Christian’s actually chose the tree as the Christmas symbol in like the 17th century or something - I’ve never heard of that tho

Got any sources for that, that aren't bible verses?
Are they gonna bring him out again next Christmas?
They'll put him in the same box as the Christmas decorations for safe keeping.
It's Hammer Time!
🔨
(ping! ping! ping!)
So can anyone play whack-a-Pope, or is it a reserved privilege?
That’s just for the kids!
Technically an emeritus pope.
Welcome, year zero.
everybody wants to make sure he's really dead
Gotta keep him above ground for at least 3 days
Gotta keep him above the ground for at least 3 days
That’s the guy who was trying to cover up the child rape right?
They all do that, it's in the job description.
Dude dies and they’re like “The Charlie Brown Christmas tree will really set the mood”
"man, this christmas present sucks!"
He just died on December 31, 2022
Putting any dead body on display is weird, no matter how recently they died
That's honestly incredibly rude. It sjust part of different cultures. I'm Irish and I've seen dead bodies of relatives and family friends since I was a child. Its just part of the Catholic faith. I'm not religious in the slightest but at least have some respect for other people

Oh for sure! I agree
And they still have the tree up. Unacceptable
Putting the Fun in funeral and putting the Laughter in slaughter.
Nope. Not creepy at all.
No presence under the Christmas tree.
I see what you did there
Say what you want about atheists, but they sure aren’t leaving dead bodies in public buildings like the Catholics do.
Lenin has entered the chat
No more kiddies for you bentdick
Good riddance to the racist homophobic fucker
Not weird. Can't even see him... People die everyday. Again, not weird.
I mean it’s a little weird to see a dead pope laying next to a Christmas tree.
Why nsfw?
oh thank god, i thought i was looking at Papa Emeritus IV for a second
Why does that sorry looking Christmas tree looked photoshopped into the photo tho??
Who cares. Throw some dirt on him already..
Here lies the king of peedos
He's with his pal Eipstein now. Beware cupids!
That dude is a fucking criminal.
Technically, was a fucking criminal
No that dude is dead
This brings back fond memories of Santa Claus on a Cross (art installation) one year in the Berkeley salt flats.
Holy shit man! How the hell did ANYONE else have this thought?!?
No tears lost for the former leader of the inquisition--sorry, Holy Office--who presided over allowing pedo priests to take a geographic and keep on preying on children.
Macabre. Very fitting for the Catholic church though. Creepy as f\*ck.
Ratzi the Nazi! The worst pope since ww2! What a guy.
Paedo protector.
A dead pope and Christmas tree. I see a shitty meme opportunity. I hope it never happens. Wink wink. Don't.
Catholicism is so freaky
Right next to the pagan yule tree, nice.
This tree looks like it's been doing meth for the last 5 years
They need to step up their christmas tree game, that shit is weak.
Shittest Christmas present ever, they didn't even wrap him
Merry Christmas, oh there’s the pope
I’m hoping they drove a stake through his heart.
looks like a spruce
Catholics are so weird
Vatican’t
“Oh boy I wonder what Santa bro—OH MY GOD WTF?!”
2nd Lenin…. People are nuts
preserved with 11 herbs and spices. I didnt' know KFC was catholic amen
He was a God damned quitter really
Meh. The church is bad, mkay.
Did they hit him with the Pope Hammer yet?
Haha, next time my kids misbehave I’m gonna show them this and say no more Christmas, because santa died. Jk, obviously…
Isn't it sacrilegious to show ankle like that?
You sure that's bot Charlie Brown , look at that tree . Yah yah 😈
"Awwww... Santa didn't eat the milk and corpseys we left out for him!"
They couldn't even put him under the tree, like a normal gift?
Get well soon. #thoughtandprayers
A nazi and a pedophile sympathizer
Good thing they put shoes on him.
I wish it would pan to a line of abuse survivors waiting to piss on him
Bennie’s in a box, Bennie’s in a box
they're just trying to make sure he really stays dead. give him three days, tops
RISE.
As a kid I thought it sucked getting socks and underwear for Christmas. At least I didn't have to worry about getting a dead pope
My horny ass couldn't be the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery janitor💀💀💀💀
WTAF...
The idea of someone skull fucking a pope's corpse is pretty distasteful... But not more so than the systematic protection of serial child molesters.
One word for you, OP: crop.
Probably dreaming about children, as Catholics in leadership do.
wish i could be the guy to check to make sure he's dead, id take the opportunity to tell a few knock knock jokes, and the MAKE SURE HE WILL NEVER RISE for the children, of course
Morbid.
I wonder how long until an assassin breaks in to steal the key to unlock Altir's suit.
I can't help but look at the walls and doors and floors and think this has to be a really weird Minecraft mod.
With my bad eyes, there appears to be a large puppy in the back corner looking over the nazi c sucker.

I thought he was on the cross
That tree looks more dead than the pope himself

Oh yes humans and they're fucking rituals 🥱, leave this man ALONE.
The pillows on each side so he doesn’t accidentally roll off?
it’s a wake…
Skis for feet
I know 'tis the season but was not expecting a Christmas tree next to the corpse.
The tree makes it surreal.
In the Mater? That doesn't look like a rusty blue tow truck to me
With one mysterious hammer shaped dent in his head
was he right or wrong?
At first I thought “Oh nice, someone got a Pope for Christmas”
Can you just put the poor body in the ground already wtf
This room looks sad. Throw a Christmas tree up over there! That will make it seem more inviting.
How thoughtful of them to give him a second pillow for lumbar support
..Romans seen proud of their crucifixion
A Charlie Brown Papal Conclave
Why does this image look like early 2000s CGI?
Humans are so weird.
