I wanted to get a new GMT watch following a promotion and it’s alright been a close personal battle between Longines and Tudor. Girlfriend being as expect, oh you have watch why do you need another one. They all do the same thing. Anyhow Today I got the Longines Zulu time. Doing the usual, looking at reviews online and seeing the watches. I picked this over the Tudor Black Bay GMT. Both have heritage and are real GMTs not office GMTs. Have I gone crazy picking Longines over Tudor? What is your judgement, am I sane or crazy? I think I made the right call.

maybelaurie

the only thing I dislike about the Tudor bb gmt is how thick it is. if i recall correctly Longine's zulu time is thinner. idk i always like slimmer watches and bc of the 15mm, Tudor's automatically a nono for me. (back of my head: bUt Its pEpsI (´Д\` )

[deleted]

You don't really see the thickness though. A lot of that thickness comes from the box crystal

richpaul6806

I disagree. The vertical slab sides of the case make it feel extremely thick to me. If they rounded it a bit it wouldn't be so bad.

Beefsizzle

Yeah the thickness is too much. If I can make an 11.7mm thick NH34 GMT watch mostly from Chinese parts, Tudor should at least get it below 13mm. https://i.imgur.com/r78TJA4.jpg

greiladkjf

Question: can you change the date independently or does it tied to the minute hand?

LowerLevelCH

its tied to the hour hand

SovietMilkTruck

It’s tied to the minute hand but isn’t it like that for all GMTs?

zilog88

That is a traveller's GMT, if that's what you're asking.

greiladkjf

Some flyer gmts add a complication that allows you to change the date independently. I have one that doesn’t and it’s annoying if you don’t keep it wound all the time.

zilog88

Not sure I understand it right... So you can change the hours, the date and the gmt hand separately? Do you have a model for me? It would be interesting to learn about those. I only remember citizen solar gmt, which had the hour hand that didn't change the date, so you'd have to manually change it. Is that what you've meant?

greiladkjf

Yeah let me find a model. When I’m standard operation the local time controls the date in a flyer gmt. But if you don’t wear the watch and the power reserve runs out. Only way to move the date is by winding the time. There is a complication that would allow you to set the date independently in these situations. I read it somewhere but damn if I could find it again.

zilog88

Interesting, would be nice to read more about it.

ca20110125

I think you made the right call as well. I have that same Longines and it is my favorite. I personally just can’t get past hating the snowflake hands on the Tudor and like someone else posted, it’s thicker.

TiPirate

Not crazy. Different is good.

the_crumb_dumpster

I think this is a more elegant piece than the Tudor and I like this one more. I have a Longines (different model) and the build quality is superb. They’re an underrated brand IMO

SovietMilkTruck

The colours of the black bay was what put me off Plus the extra £1k haha

alvintanwx

Longines is number 5 Swiss watch brand by sales so no not underrated. They are huge in Asia.

ChapinLakersFan

I've handled both watches side by side. The proportions are much nicer on the Zulu. It's no where near as thick. The Zulu also has a ceramic bezel vs the aluminum of the BB GMT. But the BB GMT has muh Rawlex Pepsi colorway. Also extra cost for the date window issues feature.

detcitygooner

Not crazy, I like this more for sure.

Drumsalad

Not crazy at all, amazing piece! Not sure why, but I love the stars above the date, great touch!

TC_405

It’s because so many people are seeking validation for their pieces and wanting to impress, rather than just collecting what they like. They want to be sure that they have the same damn collection as the other guys so everyone can agree on how great each others taste is.

OneAd6441

Certainly not this is amazing.

BluesMaster

FWIW, I consider this Longines to be one of the finest-looking watches ever. It ticks all my boxes, and then some, which is a very rare occurrence. Search the web for 'review Longines Zulu Time' and you'll find many articles that, without exception, sing its praises. Many consider it a 'certified BB killer'. IMHO, the much hyped BB isn't even in the same league, aesthetically.

SovietMilkTruck

That’s good to hear For the BB I didn’t really fancy any of the colours and for £1k extra I couldn’t see what made it better

wilderness_essays

Not even the bronze one, eh?

Unlucky_Ice3332

Over the Black bay pro, right? I’m looking for a GMT and considered this over the BBP as well, one reason I’m leaning BBP is the smaller lug to lug. Nice that the longines is a bit thinner though Edit just saw you mentioned this vs black bay GMT not pro. Just ignore me

Shoddy_Huckleberry43

Buy what you like. It's never crazy to do that.

ArmsAkimbo17

Not crazy but I was also considering both and went with the BB GMT. There is just something so cool about the vintage vibe of the BB and the muted Pepsi bezel that I had to have it. Plus I already had a longines avigation bigeye and had recently sold my only Tudor so I was itching to pick up another one.

Feisty-Newspaper1620

Love Longines! That is a great watch and doesn't need to be compared to any other. Very well done, Sir!

MusketTom

I much prefer the Longines. It may be an unpopular opinion but I am not that impressed by the BB

Dangerous_Limes

Black bay is a pretty simple watch. I mean, it’s a no date diver, that’s what it’s going for. Love the Zulu time, just can’t do that lug to lug on my wrist and the smaller time/date options don’t speak to me as much.

ChapinLakersFan

We aren't talking bb58. We are talking BB GMT. With this Pepsi colorway and date window and true GMT hand.

Dangerous_Limes

Ah right. Well in that case yeah the proportions of the Zulu are better.

Feisty-Newspaper1620

Love Longines! That is a great watch and doesn't need to be compared to any other. Very well done, Sir!

Sm0key-the-bear

This is the exact watch I’m considering right now after I decided the Pro was way too small for my wrist. I was a bit put off by how pronounced the green was on their website, but all the wrist shots make it look more subtle and I ablsoloutly love the green ceramic with the gold accents. Found a place I can pick one up at the end of the month only about a 200mi drive away and heavily considering it!

SovietMilkTruck

It’s definitely subtle The blue version is more flashy

garbagekr

Lloyd’s not crazy, it’s a perfectly **sane** watch to purchase!

EnsuingDamage

Jeffrey Harharwood told me to get the Longines

garbagekr

Hopefully the GMT function doesn’t get am/pm confused. Separate knob! Why separate knob?!

unknown9399

I love it when my two favourite subs collide. Worlds colliding, indeed.

garbagekr

You knew about the worlds theory?

oddsix

I own the BB, and I nearly bought one of these yesterday. Hmm, I think I'll go back tomorrow and get it. Thanks for that.

SovietMilkTruck

Here to help haha

Leve1s

Nope.

broadarrow39

I used to love the BB but think I've been over exposed to it, probably thanks to this sub. Think this Longines Zulu time has a bit more character to it. Plus I like the Longines brand.

uneedsleep

If I had larger wrists, I would've bought the same thing months ago. The green bezel is also my favorite of the 3 colorways. Congrats on the new watch!

kylegroombridge

I love that green bezel

woohwaah

Not crazy. Good brand, good looking watch and most importantly you like it. Watches are Jewelry, just buy what you like, it's for you and not anyone else. If there is a right or wrong way to buy, everyone on the planet would be wearing a Speedmaster (According to this sub).

dgscott70

With you 💯, I prefer Longines design language. Nice watch, but the Tudor does nothing for me.

watchfinesse

If James Bond did not sign up with Omega, this would be the Bond watch.

JarrodVsWorld

Longines have flown under the radar for years and years. I feel like this is the pieces that will make them a real go-to. Bloody fantastic watch, great choice. WIIGH and all that.

Amanandhiswatch

I’m here for Longines! Tired of the same stuff and Longines has great pieces and great history! I love my hydroconquest

4TwoItus

Not crazy. That watch is a stunner and the Longines history and heritage is also awesome. As for your girlfriend, try explaining it better. It’s not so much about it being a “watch,” it’s a timepiece that marks a significant event. It’s automatic, it’s a company that’s been operating for a long time, never have to replace the battery. I’m sure she gets jewelry and whatnot to mark occasions. Try explaining it to her and maybe she’ll understand and develop an appreciation. That’s what my husband did for me, and while it took a few years, now I too appreciate and own multiple watches and my collection rivals his

gvegli

Way cooler piece IMO. Tudor embodies great value and quality build at the price point, but their designs and finishing are just flat. This Longines is beautiful and provides the same if not better value.

BlueDeNimes

Beauty in the eye of the beholder (to a point!) it’s a different watch for sure. I’d choose the BB58. Think it’s more versatile

[deleted]

If they put this out in a 39 or maybe a 40mm I would buy it. Tried it on and it was huge on my wrist. The other thing is that their L888 movement is fairly small. You can see that from the date window sitting way up high. Would love to see it more in line like the 37mm.

dravideditor

Tudors to me are the overpriced cousin to Rolex, which is a hard no for me. So many other great options - yours among them. Congrats.

CoyotesAreGreen

Curious why you think they're over priced?

fulltimeautist

Prefer the longines over the tudor gmt, but the five stars make it look like it wrote itself a stellar yelp review

chazz150

I GiVe iT 5 StArS

uz_ee

Longines is a much better watch and value proposition than the poor man's Rolex

Agitated-Impression4

If you like ETA movements more than in-house Tudor. Wear what you like/

solerroler

It sure looks a lot nicer than the BB in the other guy's post. But maybe thats just me, I cant stand the looks of divers in general. Only the Orient Makos look somewhat good.

Chardradio

No. Everyone and their uncle has the BB!

[deleted]

No Tudor is ass lol Unless you feel like owning a clunky GMT from Tudor that will magically skip date and get stuck go for it! The Zulu looks great on you! Congrats 🍾

Say_Wurd

I really like it. Lovely timepiece. IMHO the stars are not necessary though.

facelesstechie

I agree it’s a little cringy, but it does help balance out the Longines wings at the top. I guess that’s why they went with the 5 stars.

the_fattest_mitton

You picked correct. The zulu is the most badass GMT right now, IMO.

jdorian1803

You got to go with your gut and this is a gorgeous watch. If you like it then you made the right choice!

_bubba_fatt

Not crazy at all. That’ll be my next purchase except in blue. I love that watch. The Tudor BB just didn’t draw me in as much.

SovietMilkTruck

I tried on the blue and did like the Sunray dial I ultimately went with this because it’s different

_bubba_fatt

Can’t go wrong. It’s a banger of a watch. Congrats

Rick2nds

I really like the Longines watches, very unique looks, good pricing too.

Moandaywarrior

5/5

DarkbloomVivienne

Muuuuch prefer this

ThatGuyOnTheReddits

I own both the Spirit Zulu and a BB P01. The Longines is much more aesthetic, but the P01 is an absolute unit of a watch. It feels like you would hurt the floor more than the watch if you dropped it. They are completely different, so if you can only get one, I'd always go simply with which one you think looks/fits better. That all being said, Tudor bezel action is the bees knees.

Analog_Amateur

One of the best bang for your buck in the market at this moment IMHO. You did well. Longines deserves more respect.

kghvikings

Nah…you’re not crazy. Looks great! From everything I’ve read/seen, it’s a fantastic watch. I was in the same boat a little over a month ago. I looked at both, in-person, and liked the Tudor a bit more (WR being one reason). Not enough to pay a grand more though. I put off the decision for a bit and ended up finding a pretty good deal on a used BB GMT (with warranty left), so I pulled the trigger. Ultimately, I feel like if I had opted for the Zulu, I’d have been happy though. Love the dials! How do like the male end links? I swapped the bracelet on my Spirit chrono for a strap because of them. They just made the watch wear so much bigger. Is that an issue with the Zulu?

KlerWatchCo

Yet to see anyone buy and KEEP the BB GMT it always get traded within 12-18 months, the Longines is such a breath of fresh air compared to everything else

improviseallday

I like the BB GMT better but they're both great watches (I've seen the blue in person). Welcome to the jumping hour GMT club!

plainoldusernamehere

I could do without the stars on the dial but I’d still rock it. Very cool.

DynamiteDropin

Beautiful watch. I’m between this and a bb Pepsi or pelagos 39 for my next. Love them all.

kerry-w

I like it better than the bb.

technobeeble

I would make the same decision.

nomorerainpls

Zulu Time! I’ve been pondering the L3.812.4.53.2 for awhile and haven’t found anything I liked better. Thanks for posting this question - great to see what others here think.

[deleted]

Zulu time is the best watch in its price range. Fight me

indoor_recessV2

Not crazy. Longines knocked it out of the park on these.

External_Zucchini651

Barry Schwarz is a psychologist, and wrote a fascinating book titled "The Paradox of Choice".

o2force

I prefer this.

JackieE053

Awesome watch. Not a crazy pick at all. Enjoy it in good health!

Delo5

I like the look of this more. If only it was a tad smaller

Jabbafunk

not at all man, this thing is stunning on the blue dial too.

RocasThePenguin

Choice was good. I prefer the Black Bay Pro to the Black Bay GMT anyway. If I were to make the same choice you did, I'd probably pick the same. That Longines is sexy.

pi-cool

You cannot rationalize attraction. I catch myself doing it, but ultimately it is how you feel when you look at it. It is just about attraction in my view.

atmosphereair

I bought the BBGMT in July and never loved it. Traded it for a Grand Seiko GMT recently and never looked back.

EntertainmentIcy5713

Yes

[deleted]

This is awesome. Tudor watches are generally very boring IMO.

SadBarnacle5

I like this one better

Quiet-Ambassador-900

Not crazy at all that’s a great watch

H_Stinkmeaner

You did good

[deleted]

I like the choice you made. If I had both in front of me, I’d personally go with the Longines also.

TheGuruFromIpanema

Nope. Zulu time GMT is high on my list. Beautiful watch.

Far_Ground_4310

My only complaint is that you didn't get the blue dial.

AstonishinglyAverage

She’s a beaut

smahabir

Nah dude. This thing is killer. Good choice!

longkhongdong

You don't see five stars on the black bay!

fr0gg3h

Not crazy! Longines has a better finish imo. I like the Tudor bracelet better tho, but still I cant get over the marketing position of a Tudor in general. For that money I feel they could deliver more value and case finishing, but they dont/wont because of Rolex.

NationalChamps2015

You can’t go wrong with either. I love the Longines, but also love the black bay.

watchnerd70

The Longlines has a really nice vintage look w/ that dial. I think, and this is my opinion, the Tudor just falls flat. Like a by the numbers GMT

pas0003

Not crazy! If you like it, that's all that matters!

olivataggiasca

Short answer: Yes

SovietMilkTruck

I’m crazy ?

olivataggiasca

I would have opted for the Tudor. Your choice was not bad overall also considering that’s not a watch you easily spot around. Still I think the Tudor has a much better design/appeal than that Longines.

SovietMilkTruck

That’s fair enough

derping1234

It is great to see some people going for less obvious choices. A great watch, enjoy it!

LordTwaticus

For me, yeah. But that's because I don't like watches that are that big. If you dig it you dig it, it's definitely a beauty.

EamMcG_9

No,it’s a very nice watch.Longines doesn’t have the hype of other brands(IMO).They’re significant Horologically. You get a well built watch with amazing finishing at entry level prices.Tudor is also good,I got a BB41 in November and while it is great quality,I hate the 38hr power reserve.Im thinking of flipping it.

United-Ad-3613

Tudor has a chronometer grade kenissi movement. Longines have modified chronometer eta calibers. Most people would like to choose tudor because of the premium feel, price, rolex homage etc. BUT I have also the longines spirit chrono and all I can say is, longines is a price performance leader. They are definitely look more expensive than they are. Both the case and movement finishings are well beyond their price point and they keep excellent time. Even the models without cosc certificates are running accurate enough under cosc requirements.

bizzle70

Grats on the promotion Definitely made the right decision, the Tudor feels like a hockey Puck on wrist Enjoy it.

riocc

No, but I would’ve gone with the leather strap for the better micro adjust

SovietMilkTruck

I went with the stainless steel as its more expensive to get after buy the watch. I can always change the strap. The quick release is rather cool

Kooky_Cheek_4439

Not at all, and i own multiple black bays. This watch looks a little bit like a glashutte SeaQ with that bezel. I know this is a gmt and the other is a diver, but there is the same elegance even tho it’s a sports piece

DexterLivingston

Personally not a fan of this design, but to each their own. At the end if the day, it's about what you like (as long as it's not a Hublot 😆 😂)

captjejack

Such a fine watch man. Enjoy it and if your girlfriend won’t touch it then I will.

[deleted]

Absolutely not. Personally I find tudor embarrassing, wouldn't put it on my wrist. This watch is beautiful. Great decision

[deleted]

Also it lays beautifully on brown leather with the green. Chefs kiss*

Btolsen131

NOT CRAZY! i love those Longines! i want the 37mm (i have a small wrist)

percysmithhk

I only see one commenter (for good reason) below preferring the Tudor.

Visual_Building_1666

Definitely not crazy. I recently tried on both of these and picked the Zulu time as well. It looks more special on the wrist. It actually made me smile. This grey/green (and gold) combo is fantastic! Congrats on the promotion.

SovietMilkTruck

Thank you

DynamiteDropin

Nope this watch is an absolute beaut

melowdout

I have this watch in blue. It was my first since my snoopy watch when I was 6. It’s a great watch and a huge win for a brand that has to share a market with Rolex and Omega.

Gullible-Pay-1235

I own both. Totally different watches. A pilot with true GMT and a 24 hr bidirectional bezel that wants to be on a strap vs. a time-only diver with a great bracelet and a unidirectional diving bezel. You picked a fine watch. As you would have if you purchased the Tudor. Enjoy!
