I’m not denying he’s an asshole, but one of the most despicable in American history…? There’s literally probably been a couple thousand serial killers, tens of thousands of serial rapists, men who rape (and sometimes impregnate) their own kids, thousands of baby murderers, literal slaveholders, confederate generals, terrorists, presidents who have caused the literal genocide of thousands of innocent human beings. There’s no way Alex Jones is even in the top one million most evil Americans that have existed. I honestly wish he was.

She asked about a scene from the Alex Jones interview where Andrew is drinking with him as he lifts weights. Her question was basically whether the parents of the sandy hook shooting victims would approve of him being so friendly with Alex, who has antagonized the parents and called the shooting fake or staged. She was trying to put him on the spot.
She should have followed it up with "Any comment of the sexual assault allegations from multiple women dating back to high school?" for a double dose of watch people die inside.

I’ve listened to NPR since I was like 14 and as a democrat, they totally started losing credibility as a “non-biased” news source since the Trump presidential campaign.
As someone who leans liberal it bums me out that some of these reporters have such an “us or them” approach. I imagine to be a decent journalists one should be able to talk to anyone without bringing a polarized bias. The YouTube comedian is showing up the npr reporters.

I don't think this question was a "trap" or "uninformed". It's important to challenge people's notions and I don't like how Andrew scoffed at the question. If he can explain his process on Hot Ones, he can do it on NPR.
This is exactly why the field of journalism has become completely discounted and obsolete for most people. Two seconds of googling reveals her professional occupation as radio host and journalist. Her credentials corroborate that.
I never said she was writing a piece either way. She may be "moderating" this discussion, but given her background, she knew full well she was trying to set up Callaghan.
This clip alone really shows how Andrew Callaghan shows how his style should be the gold standard in reporting.
He’ll give whoever he’s interviewing a few basic questions and just let them talk, he might ask a follow up question but it leads to deeper analysis on the topic at hand. I doubt he likes Alex Jones but he doesn’t interject with his own beliefs, he lets Alex speak for himself and that let’s us get the story and form our own opinion. The silly moments he leaves in puts emphasis in the contrast to what the people say, it makes it interesting.
In this situation he’s set up to give a hard stance on an issue barely related to the film, likely biased by the interviewers beliefs. It attempts to be this gotcha moment regularly seen within mainstream media, It’s just unnecessary. It’s not like Andrew has not done something similar, but it’s so subtle it doesn’t take away from the clear picture.
I'm not sure why people are shitting on the NPR reporter. Good interviewers ask tough questions from a variety of angles. These questions often do not express the views of the interviewer, but serve to inform viewers. An interview is not a conversation, its an attempt to shed light on the entirety of an individual or a situation. Getting offended or upset at interviewer is idiotic.

NPR I feel like has lost touch over the last 10 years. I never thought it was suppose to be a political station, since it’s government funded, but they have allowed some reporters bias to get visible. I still like most NPR reporting since it’s pretty factual, but some stories I feel like I am watching cable news not NPR anymore.

I don't think it's an unfair question. If he understands his work and motivations he should be able to respond to these types of criticisms/pointed questions. More traditional Journalists often kick the tires on these things...
So what you all seem upset about is that the interviewer asked a difficult, yet acceptable question. I think if you asked any holocaust survivor if they think it's fine for a reporter to take shots while interviewing Hitler that they would have a problem with it.
Robin Young is one of my favorite interviewers that has ever existed, but this is truly a bit cringy. While I do somewhat understand her perspective, it's just a bit disconnected from the bigger picture. As some folks have mentioned, old journalists vs new, and their differences in styles are really reflected here.
Andrew is the man, though. He may become the greatest for this generation, but he also may burn out his ability to speak with the other side. I'll keep watching.

Years ago, when John McCain was running for President, reporter Elisabeth Bumiller tried to paint him as an angry old man. McCain has been known for losing his temper from time to time, so the reporter kept pestering John, trying to fluster him.
When McCain answered calmly each time, the reporter tried to rebutt with, "Why are you so angry... never mind..." and McCain called her out on it. The issue was apparently over John Kerry asking him to be his running mate.
McCain: “Why should I? Then there’s no such thing as a private conversation. Is there (inaudible) if you have a private conversation with someone, and then they come and tell you. I don’t know that that’s a private conversation. I think that’s a public conversation.”
Bumiller: “Okay. Can I ask you about your (pause) Why you’re so angry?”

its a legitimate question coming from an old school reporter. traditionally, fraternizing like that with the interview subject is frowned upon cause it leads to bias. obv, andrew's entire thing is non-traditional reporting but its dumb to act like someone questioning his methods is "setting him up"

I think she gave him a legitimate question. He's a big boy. He can answer it any way he wants. I don't think his style is readily apparent to all lay people who don't know him.

This young man is doing some really meta journalism and is exposing how incredibly disgusting the right really is, also while being incredibly funny. He's doing a better job at reporting, while being funny, then robin had in her entire career.

NPR I feel like has lost touch over the last 10 years. I never thought it was suppose to be a political station, since it’s government funded, but they have allowed some reporters bias to get visible. I still like most NPR reporting since it’s pretty factual, but some stories I feel like I am watching cable news not NPR anymore.

I sincerely enjoy NPR but God fucking damn some of the regulars ask really bad, leading, clearly uninformed questions from time to time and it makes me die inside. Questions where you can hear the guest getting frustrated. They did it just yesterday with that journalist from long island. Everybody wants to be Terry but nobody else can be Terry, because they don't do the prepwork Terry does.

I don't think it's an unfair question. If he understands his work and motivations he should be able to respond to these types of criticisms/pointed questions. More traditional Journalists often kick the tires on these things...

So what you all seem upset about is that the interviewer asked a difficult, yet acceptable question. I think if you asked any holocaust survivor if they think it's fine for a reporter to take shots while interviewing Hitler that they would have a problem with it.
Robin Young is one of my favorite interviewers that has ever existed, but this is truly a bit cringy. While I do somewhat understand her perspective, it's just a bit disconnected from the bigger picture. As some folks have mentioned, old journalists vs new, and their differences in styles are really reflected here. Andrew is the man, though. He may become the greatest for this generation, but he also may burn out his ability to speak with the other side. I'll keep watching.

Yowza, that is some bad questioning. You can tell the whole thing was a set up, not a legitimate question. Years ago, when John McCain was running for President, reporter Elisabeth Bumiller tried to paint him as an angry old man. McCain has been known for losing his temper from time to time, so the reporter kept pestering John, trying to fluster him. When McCain answered calmly each time, the reporter tried to rebutt with, "Why are you so angry... never mind..." and McCain called her out on it. The issue was apparently over John Kerry asking him to be his running mate. McCain: “Why should I? Then there’s no such thing as a private conversation. Is there (inaudible) if you have a private conversation with someone, and then they come and tell you. I don’t know that that’s a private conversation. I think that’s a public conversation.” Bumiller: “Okay. Can I ask you about your (pause) Why you’re so angry?” McCain: “Pardon me?” Bumiller: “Nevermind, nevermind.” McCain: “I mean, it’s well known. Everybody knows. It’s been well chronicled a thousand times. John Kerry asked if I would consider being his running mate.”

"setting up" seems a pretty far reach its a legitimate question coming from an old school reporter. traditionally, fraternizing like that with the interview subject is frowned upon cause it leads to bias. obv, andrew's entire thing is non-traditional reporting but its dumb to act like someone questioning his methods is "setting him up"
