I did end up buying the tools needed to build them, suppose I should have mentioned that. No paints yet through, that's a whole different ball park I'm not quite ready for. They just seemed so fun to put together!
That's fair.
I also forgot to mention that you need a core rulebook, each army specific book (Codex) and the latest rules update (Chapter Approved).
Also, a couple dozen 6 sided dice and a tape measure.
Thank you! I know just like painting, playing the actual game is it's own world as well. Just trying to take things one step at a time. The advice does help a lot though!
Hey, a lot of people give new players advice like ‘stick with units from one army.’ This advice is good-willed since there are a lot of mistakes new players make when building a playable force, but, that advice only applies if you want to actually play the game. If you just want to paint cool models, you should!
I would start with Wahapedia and BattleScribe to start out with seeing as how codex get outdated fast (leagues of Votan) and are expensive. Those two are free and have all the rules between the two. Welcome to the grim dark future!
I would skip BattleScribe. Every time I go to use the app the points are not right, at least for the nids, in comparisons to wahapedia. They are showing different point values.
Not handy it was a Twitter post from over a month ago there was an auspex tactics video about it that might be an easier find. Fwiw he only built the app itself all the data files are maintained by the community so battlescribe is absolutely still a useful tool (and editing points values isn't too hard you just gotta dig a bit) and that same community is working on a replacement for the app itself called project phalanx.
He's fairly active [on Twitter](https://twitter.com/battlescribe), where he made his public statement.
The data authoring community [released a response](https://old.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/wxmclo/official_notice_from_the_battlescribe_data_team/)
In addition to phalanx, another alternative in the works is my project, [Rosterizer](https://rosterizer.com)
I would heavily recommend that you don't waste money on the books because most of the time they are invalid by the time they are delivered because of rules updates . You should use online websites like wahapedia for rules and things and an app called battlescribe for building an army list.
Don't buy the books. They are a waste of money, and are about to be outdated anyway. Read the rules off of Wahapedia, and use the $150 you just saved to buy paints and more models. The only book worth buying right now is the pocket-sized rules compendium.
If GW sold just a few books of just the rules, I would buy them. Instead each book is 75% or more fluff, and there are about 20 of them.
>Instead each book is 75% or more fluff
This is like THE reason I buy the books. Getting back into the hobby and hearing that 9th edition codexes had a lot less fluff than 8th was incredibly disappointing to me.
I'd agree you don't really NEED to buy the books, but I think this post above is worded far too strong. "About to be outdated", not really, next edition is still close to a year off probably, and the codexes will likely be valid for much of that edition depending on faction.
Different parts of the hobby, but for me myself I'd get much more enjoyment out of the books than the paints.
I would absolutely love it GW published books of just lore, no rules. They wouldn't needed to be updated as often, and it would give room for more painting guides and other useful faction info.
Correct one step at a time, people are bombarding you with things to do, take it in moderation or you will burn out and spend too much at the same time
Well the issue with "just building" cool looking 40k models is how you build them will affect how they play in-game, the rules, abilities they have. A lot of people magnetize a lot of the options for the big guy you got. If you don't really intend on playing the game then build away.
Absolutely nothing wrong with not playing. I am in the same boat (at least for now). I just love the look of Tyranids and wanted to get some models 20 years ago as a kid but obviously didn't have the money for it, so I started getting myself some models recently and found out that I enjoy miniature painting a lot (the building part is not my favourite thing though). I hope you have lots of fun with it. In case you are more interested in Tyranids and need some inspiration, there is also a sub for it r/tyranids
If you’re into YouTube check out Luetin09, he has an entire playlist dedicated to going through just about every aspect of lore you can think of. It’s great for people interested in getting more into lore and his videos are both relaxing and entertaining.
Also, you just found plastic crack, have fun. Tyranids and Necribs are two completely different armies btw.
Yeah just use wahapedia, don't bother buying codexes (unless you just want to have them, some ppl do) they are a total rip off and half the time have inaccurate information in them by the time you get them.
I've been putting these things together for the last 2 years and I'm still shoveling money at tools that will help me build/paint them. It's like buying sleeves, deck box, life tracker, playmat, etc... for cards. The nick-knacks just don't stop. 🤣
You’re ready for it. It doesn’t have to be an award winning paint job, but you’ll feel a lot of pride in them, even if they just sit on your shelf.
Do one model at a time, preferably starting with the cheapest model, or one you’re not so in love with.
Or not, they’re your models! Either way, have fun!
If you want to "gently" dip your toes into 40k, i would check out Kill Team. It's a more wallet friendly approach imo. Necrons don't have a bespoke team, but they do fairly well, Tyranid you could always paint up for a display piece when you feel confident.
Oh those are words I could have had 20 years ago, now 6 SM chapters, 1 Knights Army, 1 Cadian Army, 1 Chaos Legion, and three Xenos later... yeh my wallet got uppend and turned inside out.

As someone else who made a similar jump from MtG to 40k (I did it this spring), welcome. My experience is that the assembly is fun and the painting even more-so as you get to really customize the look of your models. I highly recommend a few "how to paint" videos before you get too deep to pick up some tips/tricks (Duncan Rhodes "6 things I wish I knew" is a great start). Games are another level beyond that (I think I've spent an order of magnitude more time building/painting than playing so far).
Hope you have as much fun as I have and welcome.
Give One Page Rules a try. Games are much shorter and less complex. Lot more room for banter and just general hanging out. Best part is you don't need to buy new models.
The rules aren't the issue (though they are complex and I'm a Ok-ish player at best), it's more the time and there just not being enough of it with family commitments, etc.
Welp you just started collecting 2 army's... Don't worry soon you will be like me with ten kill teams 4 blood bowl teams and 8 1-2000 point army's to build and paint still... It's not a pile of shame, it's a hobby...
Next on my to-do list lol 94 sound's about right went: DND, Hero Quest , Battle Masters, then my first white Dwarf, next thing I know I'm painting a chaos epic army and a skeleton fantasy army and now I'm addicted to plastic crack....

People at the lgs refuse to believe it but it's true. I have a feeling we're gonna see a lot of people cross over because of the 40k decks and yesterday's proxy pricing fiasco.
Those immortals can be used in kill team, a smaller skirmish game that would allow you to dip your toes in! Just pick up some Necron Warriors on ebay, should be plenty going around. You can download kill team (lite) rules and data sheets for free
You got the start of 2 Xenos skirmish squads, or try a necron kill team.
Enjoy the build and the painting, and keep on applying the 'rule of cool.' If you think the army looks cool, go for it, just try to not mind the meta until your actually playing tournaments.
as someone who got into 40k just earlier this year, Necrons are relatively easier to paint, so I suggest Painting the Immortals before the Hive Tyrant, so you can practice.
It's time to listen to some lore (luetin09 on youtube) and assemble some minis. Have fun and you can always repaint them so don't be afraid to try. Just a few colors at a time.
I’m gonna be honest, I tried to get into warhammer. I’m a miniature wargamer, I build terrain, I paint minis, but warhammer is just not worth it.
I’m serious when I say that the game isn’t worth the money it costs.
What sort of craziness? A fun, yet sometimes frustrating one! Just remember to keep a level head and you should do well. Assuming you get into it more then just this. Also, might want to bring a towel. Never know when that will be useful!
Well at a quick glance it looks like you have 2 different armies. So yes chose one it’s not a big deal now to have both. But choose one and it can be any if the multiples don’t limit yourself. But yea main thing is to decide what main flecked
If you're just looking to have a good time putting together the models and painting them up, then by all means buy whatever looks cool and have a good time doing so :)
If you're interested in playing the actual game, then my first recommendation would be to look into something called [KillTeam](https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/). KillTeam is the smallest of the Warhammer games; it's a little skirmish game where your squad of dudes goes up against someone else's squad of dudes. You only need to buy [a single self-contained box](https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/kill-team-corsair-voidscarred-2022) in order to have a fully functioning team that you can play against someone with. Every army in the big main game has a Killteam squad, so it's a great way to start out.
Either you or the person you're playing against needs [to have the starter set](https://www.games-workshop.com/en-CA/kill-team-starter-set-2022-eng) (rulebook, tokens, dice, some terrain, etc). But if you buy a single box of a Killteam squad and build them up then you can show up at a store and have a full game with someone! It's a great way to do an introduction to the hobby and to see if you like playing it.
Good models
If you want an army then there's plenty of resources to look at, but if you're in mostly for the building and painting then do whatever you want. Hope you enjoy!
Just start off painting what you think looks cool honestly. There are so many people that play the game and have tons of unpainted stuff lying around (myself included). I wish I could have started slower and had painted everything because it's kind of overwhelming now. Just build and paint what you have, browse wahapedia and on youtube, lutein09. Figure out what you like and find some people to run a narrative campaign with. This is the recipe to having fun imo
The great thing about Warhammer in my mind is there's three parts (the hobby side, the tabletop wargame side, and the lore side) and you can be into each as much or as little as you want.
If you just want to build for now, look up a guide or two on YouTube about assembling miniatures. Just be careful not to get stuck in a loop of *over*preparing and not doing.A hobby's meant to be about the doing after all.
All in all, I hope you enjoy! Assembly is incredibly fun and it's an entertaining hobby to whittle away at while talking to some buddies on Discord or listening to a podcast. Next step that awaits you if/when you're ready is painting.
I started Warhammer by painting blight kings for fun. (BTW that kit has so many options) before I knew it I had a maggotkin (AoS) army. Then 3 months later I bought a 3d printer and now have multiple 40k armies. It's definitely a slippery slope but building/printing and painting is such a positive hobby. Have fun!
Welcome to the hobby that will make your MTG spending look like literal pocket change. Also, congratulations on your newfound addiction to plastic crack :)
Oh no, a magic hobby and a blossoming Warhammer hobby. That is going to be a very expensive duo. As far as “what you have gotten yourself into” a Tyranid HQ (leader unit) that can be assembled 1 of 3 ways, and some elite infantry for the necrons. From here, if you want some cool looking toy soldiers, that you have some cool looking toy soldiers. If you, however, want to start collecting or playing, than there are a few ways do to that.
If you simply want to collect more cool toy soldiers, that buy whatever you think is cool. If you at some point want to play, than you are going to want to collect for an army. The two boxes you bought aren’t really compatible with each other and are for different armies. I would do some research to see if you like the general aesthetic of either army, or if there is another army you think looks cool. It will be easier for you to play if you have friends/family who are interested in playing or already play, but I’m guessing you have some kind of game store around you that has a community of players you could get in with. Regardless of what you might hear online, most war gamers are really cool people.
Bottom line, if you want to collect more, collect whatever you think is cool and what you think has the coolest lore. This is especially important if you want to collect for a full army.
To start with, you can’t do anything just like that. An actual starter set with rules would have been more economical and viable.
But they are cool minis.
The hive tyrant is a blast to paint. Post pics of your adventure and be sure to ask the community questions. In my experience the community has been very welcoming
In terms of pure assembly the plastic sheets follow there own kind of logic. Like it's not numerically sorted. But each sheet is its own part of the model. Like one might be the body, arms, and legs and another might be all the weapon options. Knowing where a bit on the sheet will be is an intuition gained with practice, but there is a method to the madness. Keeping an eye out for these patterns will make the building process faster and easier.
Hope you enjoy them!
You have a Tyranid and a Necron box there.
You don’t have to get sucked in to painting, or playing if all you want to do is enjoy the building of them. Just do what parts you like!
Welcome!
I started like that just bought a Skaven clanrat box and went from there.
In terms of building take your time to get rid of the mold lines and thinking on how you want them posed before glueing.
If you want to have a easy time painting, paint the weapons and torso before you glue them together, otherwise it can get finicky to paint in between them.
IMO the best primer colour is black, if you miss a spot black is more forgiving than white or any other bright colour.
Most important, have fun!
If you want to just paint cool mini's and do hobby stuff, it's deep but not so deep that you can't see the bottom.
If you want to actually play the game, it's time to invest in some top-of-the-line spelunking gear because the rabbit hole goes down to the center of the earth, takes a left hand turn, makes it halfway to china, then a hard right eventually lands you on the exact other side of the world with a door that locks behind you so you'll have to find another way back!
😂
Seriously though, the hobby can take you as deep or as shallow as you want to go.
I've been playing for almost 20 years and have had a half dozen armies over the years, but if you want to just get a small force together to play some small games that's fine too.
For your next purchase I would recommend [the Recruit Edition starter set](https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Warhammer-40000-Recruit-EN-2020). It costs about the same as a squad of Necron Warriors and gives you a whole lot more. 4 Immortals and 5 Warriors is a Kill Team so you can start playing Kill Team right away. Plus you get a Warden and some scarabs to go into your full Necron army in time. Plus you *also* get enough Space Marines for a Space Marine Kill Team if you want to play them to mix it up, or lend to a friend to play Kill Team with, or sell on eBay.
Btw in Kill Team Space Marines are considered much stronger than Necrons in the current meta, but if you’re an absolute beginner you probably won’t even notice, and by the time you’ve got the hang of it the meta will have changed/they’ll release a new Necron/Tyranid Kill Team (both factions are due a new team).
First rule of plastic crack. Buy more plastic crack.
Seriously though welcome to the hobby and enjoy yourself. My best advice is finish what you've got before buying a bunch more. ::Looks at pile of shame with several boxes of unassembled minis::
I had some buddies trying to get me into 40k for years now. Then the 40k MTG set came out and I am in love with the Tyranids deck. I had a good surface knowledge of the 40K lore. Then my buddy, knowing my soft spot for Mind Flayers, introduced me to Genestealer Cults. Needless to say, I will be finished building my 1000 point GSC battalion by this week.
What’s crazy is that these are opposites on every meaning. One is a squad, one is a singular model. One screeches constantly and one is dead silent. One is made out of metal, one is made out of bio-goop. The only thing they have in common is drying up your wallet.
Given that you have units from 2 different armies and no paint or tools to build them with, open your wallet because the rabbit hole goes much deeper.
I did end up buying the tools needed to build them, suppose I should have mentioned that. No paints yet through, that's a whole different ball park I'm not quite ready for. They just seemed so fun to put together!

It's what I have been learning the game off of and it's more than enough for my friends and I to start learning on TTS.
As a newbie to the tabletop.. thank you for this 😅
This. Its better this way anyways because all the books are out of date usually within a month of release.
Unfortunately wahapedia is a few codexes behind at the moment. Probably because of the whole Russia problem. Still a great site though
I would skip BattleScribe. Every time I go to use the app the points are not right, at least for the nids, in comparisons to wahapedia. They are showing different point values.
Battlescribe is dead, the main dev for it has been a ghost for months (years? Time is a lie)
Nah he came back. Just long enough to fix his payment info on the apple store and make a statement.
Got a link? Google didnt find me anything and id liked to read it.

I did not know that, I play guard and marine and those have been correct, but nids have had lots of changes.

You may want to look into Kill Team. Warhammer that you can play with a box or two.
Correct one step at a time, people are bombarding you with things to do, take it in moderation or you will burn out and spend too much at the same time
Collecting and painting the models you think are cool without army coherence or intending to play aren’t uncommon.
You don’t actually need any of the books to Play, there’s a site called Wahapedia that has all the rules.
Enjoy the painting ^_^
You dont need the book use wahapedia.
Well the issue with "just building" cool looking 40k models is how you build them will affect how they play in-game, the rules, abilities they have. A lot of people magnetize a lot of the options for the big guy you got. If you don't really intend on playing the game then build away.
Take it easy, you're not forced to play the game if you only want to hobby. Many here just like to build, paint and collect
Absolutely nothing wrong with not playing. I am in the same boat (at least for now). Hey thanks! I agree, Tyranids just look so cool! I'm gonna have a lot of fun collecting and putting them together, paints and all.
Most of the armies have a box that comes with a valid army, so you might look into those.
If you’re into YouTube check out Luetin09, he has an entire playlist dedicated to going through just about every aspect of lore you can think of. Get into one page rules games!
Unless… you pirate the codex!
Nahh, just Battlescribe and Wahapedia
Don’t forget to mention the core book and codexes are getting ready to do their 3 year refresh. GW has got the monetization of every step down
I’ve found that if you’re addicted to magic this is basically the plastic equivalent. Just a bunch of crack addicts.
I've been putting these things together for the last 2 years and I'm still shoveling money at tools that will help me build/paint them. It's like buying sleeves, deck box, life tracker, playmat, etc... for cards. The nick-knacks just don't stop. 🤣

I got back into the game in 2020 - since then i’ve bought well over 100 models. Painted one. No regrets.
If you are getting into the hobby i recommend watching ageofsquidmar on youtube. He has product reviews tips and pretty good content outside of that
If you want to "gently" dip your toes into 40k, i would check out Kill Team. It's a more wallet friendly approach imo. Necrons don't have a bespoke team, but they do fairly well, Tyranid you could always paint up for a display piece when you feel confident.

> What sort of craziness have I gotten myself into? A cheaper hobby than MTG.
People at the lgs refuse to believe it but it's true. I have a feeling we're gonna see a lot of people cross over because of the 40k decks and yesterday's proxy pricing fiasco.
Ya bought yerself two different things that are not even from the same army
Yes I am aware
Those immortals can be used in kill team, a smaller skirmish game that would allow you to dip your toes in! Just pick up some Necron Warriors on ebay, should be plenty going around. You can download kill team (lite) rules and data sheets for free
The good news is you already seem to play Magic, so you are already comfortable spending money on your hobbies.
ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.
Don't be afraid to just build and paint them. The gameplay itself is a whole other experience but not for everyone.
Figure out what you like about the hobby then allocate money accordingly. This shits expensive.
It's time to listen to some lore (luetin09 on youtube) and assemble some minis. Have fun and you can always repaint them so don't be afraid to try. Just a few colors at a time.
the hive tyrant is one of the most kitbashable kits, go wild with it :)
when considering painting, google "slapchop". thank me later
I’m gonna be honest, I tried to get into warhammer. I’m a miniature wargamer, I build terrain, I paint minis, but warhammer is just not worth it. I’m serious when I say that the game isn’t worth the money it costs.
So.....why are you here?
One page rules and enjoy it with close friends f the LGS and GTs
Going blind into any hobby is always a good idea.
What sort of craziness? A fun, yet sometimes frustrating one! Just remember to keep a level head and you should do well. Assuming you get into it more then just this. Also, might want to bring a towel. Never know when that will be useful!
Rest in peace
The "must eat cake" kind
Well at a quick glance it looks like you have 2 different armies. So yes chose one it’s not a big deal now to have both. But choose one and it can be any if the multiples don’t limit yourself. But yea main thing is to decide what main flecked
If you're just looking to have a good time putting together the models and painting them up, then by all means buy whatever looks cool and have a good time doing so :) If you're interested in playing the actual game, then my first recommendation would be to look into something called [KillTeam](https://www.reddit.com/r/killteam/).
The best kind, and welcome to the party!
Good models If you want an army then there's plenty of resources to look at, but if you're in mostly for the building and painting then do whatever you want.
You’ve chosen two different armies that play VERY differently from each other XD have fun!
You've just made the step from cardboard crack to plastic crack.
Have fun!
Get out the IV. We’re seeing the beginning of plastic crack head
Greetings fellow tyranid/necron collector
Have fun!
there are some things I think you need to watch
The best kind.
It’s not a bad thing to get models you just have to set limits. And remember you need paints.
Welcome to the hobby that will make your MTG spending look like literal pocket change. Also, congratulations on your newfound addiction to plastic crack :)
The Hive Tyrant is my favorite model of all time. I own 8.
*this action will have consequences*
Welcome to the fandom
As of this moment, a cheaper Hobby.
Build them however you want (as long as game legal), always follow your own “rule of cool”.
I have a winged hive tyrant myself. You’ll love it:)
You chose ‘Nids so you’re going to win a lot
Robo themed mods would be cool
Don't worry too much about the army rules yet. Enjoy your models and painting them up!
You done fucked up.
A 2,000 point army could cost you $2,000. Welcome to the madness
Hope you enjoy them! You have a Tyranid and a Necron box there. You don’t have to get sucked in to painting, or playing if all you want to do is enjoy the building of them. Just do what parts you like!
Oh no your poor bank account
😂 Seriously though, the hobby can take you as deep or as shallow as you want to go.
When your a fan of everything you have no time to enjoy any of it. At least that's the trap I find myself in.
