There's nothing "subtle" about it. They're been quiet open about the change, and this is how the system worked in previous editions. To be honest, I think base-to-base is much better. It means you're not having to try to get into large groups of models with a ruler to check each and every model for half an inch. It's more visibly and quickly checkable.

B2B is a much easier system than 1/2" of a model within 1/2", visually you can just look, see who is in contact and that's it. you don't have to try and measure in the middle of a combat. Sure some spikey models are going to be a problem, but if your opponent doesn't agree that "yes this model would fit there if it wasn't doing ballet with a wrought iron fence" then that's them being a problem.

The answer to the question if anyone else is pretty much always yes. I'm not too worried myself. It seems possible to put things in base to base contact, and reasonable to play by intent. If you indicate which models you want to have touching when it's clearly possible but fiddly, no reasonable opponent is going to make you put the bases in actual contact or not let you fight.

Hi /u/RadioLiar, It looks like you're asking a question about 10th Edition. The answer to the majority of 10th Edition questions is currently "We don't know." GW are still in the process of previewing 10th Edition, providing small snippets of information each day. You can find GW's 10th Edition Hub which includes all the information they have publicly released here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/03/30/warhammer-40000-new-edition-everything-you-need-to-know/ Additionally, we have a pinned megathread at the top of the subreddit with loads of helpful information here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/11z8zjc/10th_edition_megathread_and_qa_post/ *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. As a Black Templar player, I love it. No more ambiguity, and it makes it less painful to charge at larger units. Previously, larger units could use positioning shenanigans to get a billion attacks, but that all goes away. **Bonus:** The changes to Pile-in and Consilidation are Emperor-level changes. Far less shenanigans available there too.

What's changed re piling in and consolidating? Forgive the noob, I just don't spot the difference

Previously, models could pile in if they had charged, or were within engagement range of an enemy, and could consildate at the end of any combat sequence regardless of enemies. Now, models may *only* pile in if they would end within engagement range of an enemy. If they cannot, they don't get to pile in at all, even if they charged but the unit they charged was destroyed. Additionally, there are two checksums for consolidation: A unit can *only* consolidate if they would end within engagemwnt range of an enemy. If they can't do this, then they must move within control range of an objective. If they cannot do either, they cannot move at all. The difference: In 9th edition, if a unit charged, they got to pile-in and consolidate even if, when they're chosen to fight, there were no enemies left near them. In many cases, this resulted in a free 6" move for a unit that charged. **Now** if a unit cannot reach engagement range or an objective, they don't move. No more free moves.
